Our upper school students in particular are working very hard with the Year 11’s about to commence their semester exams and the Year 12’s their mock exams. Many of the Year 12’s have been attending voluntary after school revision seminars and prioritising their studies in the lead up to their final exams. In the past couple of weeks we have celebrated Science Week, Literacy Week and Book Week with most staff and students participating in a range of classroom and lunchtime activities and displays throughout the school. Today’s Interhouse Athletics Carnival was a very enjoyable event with high levels of attendance and participation. It was great to see most students dressed in their House colours and having lots of fun. The September Music Concert at the Perth Modern School Auditorium was conducted this week and I was again very impressed by the commitment of the Music students and staff and by the standard of performance. Applecross students have been well represented in the ‘Young Originals’exhibition which is an exciting event in the calendar of public schools in Western Australia. This exhibition promotes excellence in the visual arts across a range of artistic mediums including computer generated works; graphic design; print media; sculpture; video art and textiles. It’s a tremendous achievement to be chosen for exhibition and both teachers and students are both to be congratulated on getting their creativity, insight and skill recognised. More information on our entries including photographs will be included in the next bulletin. You might have also seen our Year 11 students on Today Tonight this week as they exemplified their work in the Fiona Stanley Hospital Art Competition. Earlier this year I spoke to students about a situation where a recruitment firm was conducting the initial selection process for a large number of applicants. Applicants were told to arrive at an address in the CBD at 8.30am. Unfortunately, for the nearly one third of applicants who arrived just a few seconds after 8.30am, they were told that no more applicants would be admitted. Most of these late arrivals were angry as the traffic had been very heavy and one of the two elevators in the building were out of order and so on. However, the recruitment firm later wrote to applicants to remind them how much priority their clients placed on good time keeping. Their advice to applicants was to aim to arrive for interviews at least 15 minutes early as no excuses would be accepted for late arrivals. Each morning we have a significant number of students who arrive late for class, sometimes even when assessments and exams are being conducted. While a small number of late arrivals have genuine reasons for being late occasionally, the majority have no valid excuse and have simply developed a habit of being tardy. Our advice to students is to ensure that good habits are developed at school and aim to arrive at least ten or fifteen minutes before the warning siren at 8.25am. I would hate to see any of our students miss the start of an important exam or job interview because of an entrenched habit of tardiness. As you know, we have put in place a new attendance system and consequences to help support students to make good choices about this matter. I am impressed with how well mannered, polite and friendly our students are. It is an absolute pleasure to wander around the school and have a chat with students. We receive a number of phone calls, letters and emails from members of the public praising our students for their general manners and politeness. While we occasionally receive a complaint that an Applecross student did not give their seat to an adult on the bus, we receive twice as many compliments about students doing the right thing. We also know that people are more inclined to complain about negative behaviour than they are to report the positives. While we want to know about any students acting in a manner that detracts from the schools image, overall I believe that our students are a credit to themselves, their families and their school and this can only enhance the reputation of the school in the broader community. I wish all students well for the next few weeks as they continue to consolidate and expand their skills and level of understanding. In particular, I wish our Year 12 students the very best as they prepare for this very important phase of their school lives with a range of final assessments and exams. I know that the vast majority have worked very hard and will get the rewards that they deserve. Paul Leech, Principal
