Zachary Men’s Club: Over 50 Years of ServiceCommunity Service Group Expanding, Renovating for a New Generation of Civic AdvocatesBy Daniel Duggan

Last year when Family Circle Magazine named Zachary as one of the 10 best cities for families to live in the United States, they cited the extraordinary work of the Zach-ary Men’s Club as one of the major determining factors for the national recognition.

The Zachary Men’s Club has been instrumental in facilitating the growth of the Zachary Community School System, The Zachary Food Pantry, and the Zachary Community Center.

The Zachary Men’s Club was or-ganized in 1959 by Bobby Snowden, Robert Holder, David Horton, James Forbes, Milton Lee, Jesse Spears, George Milligan, Sr., Charlie Stones, George Brown, and Theodore Stew-art. These men, and many others, sought to create an organization to provide resources to members of the Zachary Community that will enable them to become more productive citizens through community involve-ment by helping the poor and needy, assisting with education endeavors, and promoting a culture of helping those who need a little hand up in the community.

Over the years, the Men’s Club,

has made significant real estate in-vestment off of Rollins Road and Avenue A. In 1965 the Club was able to donate the land to the City of Zachary for the Zachary Communi-ty Center. Last year, seeing the need

for an expanded Zachary Food Bank, the Men’s Club donated to the city the acreage needed to build the new Zachary Food Pantry, which held its ribbon cutting last week. These parcels of land were paid for by the members of the Men’s Club and do-nated free of charge to the City for the specific use of helping the less fortunate members of the commu-nity.

The Zachary Men’s Club is cur-rently renovating their building lo-cated at 5746 Rollins Road. They originally purchased the building and 13 acres in 1959, and the building has been added onto several times. “We have gutted the entire building, raised the roof, and are incorporat-ing a commercial kitchen, so that we can host larger events in the facility in the coming months,” Floyd Peli-

chet, President of the Zachary Men’s Club, said.

Four years ago, members of the Zachary Men’s Club envisioned us-ing the acreage plot of land behind their facilities on Rollins Road to plant a small sustainable garden for members and their families. They envisioned their members toiling in the dirt on a volunteer basis to grow some delicious fruits and vegetables. Early success and support from the local community has grown the once fledgling garden into the Zach-ary Community Garden. The Men’s Club is able to provide fresh produce to the Zachary Food Pantry, which is just adjacent to the garden on the property the Men’s Club donated.

MEN’S CLUB continued from page 1

“The Summer Garden is com-ing in right now, the cooler spring has delayed some of the harvest-ing,” said Floyd Pelichet. Pelichet said that they are currently picking string beans, okra, tomatoes, yellow squash, cucumbers, and some blue-berries.

In the fall the Garden group will plant its winter garden with the in-tention of continuing donating the harvest to the Zachary Food Pan-try. This will be the fourth year that vegetables grown in the garden will be donated to the Pantry. The group intends to plant broccoli, cabbage, turnips, mustards, collards, okra and peas this September.

In addition to the assistance with the Food Pantry and Community Center, the Men’s Club provides annual college scholarships to two Zachary High Seniors, provides as-sistance to needy residents on utility bills, assists the elderly with home maintenance, provides food baskets to families, and assists the Zachary High athletic Departments with con-cessions assistance and fundraising for underprivileged youth to partici-pate in sports.

The Men’s Club also hosts a back to school fair and supply giveaway annually, as well as, hosting an an-nual Easter Egg Hunt, which hun-dred’s of kids participate in each

year.Upon completion of their fully

renovated building, the facility will be available as an emergency shel-ter during hurricanes, and as a place for a repast for families who other-wise have no other location after a funeral.

When the new facilities are com-plete, the Men’s Club will continue to promote civic involvement by hosting community informational meetings, political forums, and City of Zachary official functions.

The Zachary Men’s Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at their facility

on Rollins Road. They are looking for new members who are interested in continuing the tradition of com-munity involvement and uplift. They encourage people to show up for a meeting, or contact a member for more information. Charles Duple-chain can be reached at 603-3545, Floyd Pelichet can be reached at 235-8682, and Milton Lee can be reached at 337-8768 for more information on how to get involved.

The renovated facility on Rollins Rd. will be large enough to hold community meetings, as well as, social gatherings for interested parties.

Newman’s Cleaners held their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on June 18 for their full service cleaners. Owner Ray Newman opened Newman’s Cleaners 6 months ago.

Some items have a same-day turnaround if brought in before 9 a.m. Newman is a very proud family man. His son Calvin, age 32, is a 14-year military veteran. The Regional Arts Council of Zachary (RACZ) is gearing up for the 2nd annual Fall Art Crawl set to take place in the heart of Zachary--the fastest growing community in the state--Friday, Oct. 25, from 6-9 p.m.

The Fall Art Crawl has businesses along Main Street in Zachary and in surrounding areas downtown invite artists to display their fine art to sell and open their doors to the public for about three hours on the Friday night of the event.

There will be live music at various locations throughout the route as well as scheduled theatrical productions at several participating locations.

The Art Crawl will begin at the intersection of Highway 19 and Main Street Studio and may possibly end at the intersection of Highway 964 and Church Street, depending on the level of participation of our commu-nity’s businesses.

The purpose of the Art Crawl is to stimulate economic growth in our lo-cal businesses as well as promote the sales of local artists.

The Art Crawl will also serve as a fundraiser for the Regional Arts Council of Zachary (RACZ).
