(Above) Mr. Charles Duplechain, President of the Myrtle Hill Civic Association attended the Zachary City Council meeting on February 26 to officially recognize and present a certificate of appreciation to the Zachary Fire Department, Zachary Police Department and Zachary Feed and Garden Supply for their outstanding service, contribution and support during their 2012 Christmas social in Myrtle Hill Subdivision. Mr. Duplechain said, “It feels good to be in a city that is supported by the leader-ship of our public safety agencies and area businesses coming together to make our event such a huge success.” Mr. Duplechain (right) is pictured here with Fire Chief Danny Kimble.

(Right, top) The Mayor and members of the Zachary City Coun-cil recognized Justin Walker, Zachary fireman (far left), who was recently awarded first place for the 2012 VFW Outstanding Fire-man of the Year Award from the local division and second place for the State Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Louisiana.

(Above) Murphy Oil Company’s effort to strengthen the com-munities in which it operates was evident in downtown Zachary. Eric Burise, Murphy Oil district manager, along with nine re-gional supervisors, teamed up to spruce up the Zachary Historical District. The group washed windows, porches and steps at the historical homes and picket fences surrounding the homes on Virginia St. Mayor Amrhein and Zachary Historic Village Direc-tor Jean Byers were on hand to applaud the Murphy employees who generously donated their time and energy to freshen things up. The group plans to return in the future for more beautification efforts.

Freelance Artist Lisa Pope Exhibits Artwork at City Utility OfficeThe City of Zachary is proud

to showcase local artists from the Zachary Artist Guild at the City Hall Utility Office throughout the year. Zachary newcomer Lisa Pope is presently exhibiting several of her pieces, including “Two Blades of Grass”, soft pastel, “Purple Iris”, watercolor, “Curiosity”, watercolor and “Blue Star Fish Discovery”, watercolor. Her skills and expertise includes, watercolor, pastel, acrylic paint, graphite and charcoal draw-

ings. She also does commissioned paintings and portraits from photos. She is presently a member of the Louisiana Watercolor Society and the Zachary Artist Guild.

Lisa has always loved art, even though she chose to pursue a career in education, serving as a school counselor in Virginia Beach, Vir-ginia. With a career at hand, mar-riage and family, she was left with little time for art. After growing to miss it, she dug out her old paints

and gave them a whirl, immediately reconnecting with her original love for painting.

Lisa says, “I apply paint and can’t wait to see what happens. Pablo Pi-casso was quoted as saying, ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.’ This is what I am attempting to do–return to the art I love and see the world with fresh new eyes... It feels like a rebirth.”

fered including over 20 antique deal-ers from throughout the South selling elegant antiques and collectibles, a self-guided walking tour of the His-toric District including three historic churches and the original 1816 Feli-ciana courthouse, a regional artists’ show and sale, and, of course, the popular Gumbo Kitchen lunch fair for hungry antiquers looking to fill their bellies with home cooking and delicious desserts.

Every year, the event also features an additional historic structure on its tour; this year, it is the Professor’s Cottage at Centenary State Historic Site as well as the two-story col-umned 1837 West Wing Dormitory. The Cottage holds historic exhibits and period furnishings.

Even if you have already visited Centenary, you will want to drop by again to be among one of the first vis-itors to view a fascinating new video presentation. The 18-minute video, unveiled last November, covers the full history of the College, from its 1826 beginnings, through the diffi-cult Civil War period when the Col-lege was turned into a hospital and was even the site of battle, to its clos-ing and relocation to Shreveport in 1908. The video then recounts how the original campus and its build-ings changed hands over the next 60 years, facing demolition of some of its buildings and extreme disrepair before the state purchased it and re-stored the current standing structures.

Admission to the Antiques Show and Sale is $10 and includes the tour

of the Professor’s Cottage and the West Wing at Centenary as well as entrance to the churches and court-house on the walking tour. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Sat-urday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sun-day. The Professor’s Cottage will be open from noon until 4 p.m. daily. The $10 ticket is good for all three days. All proceeds from the event support the preservation activities of the Jackson Assembly, which, over the decades, has been directly responsible for the preservation of seven historic structures and has in-directly influenced the preservation of upwards of 35 structures.

Austin Bradford, a third grade student at Central Private School, earned another championship dur-ing the 2012 MTA Louisiana Cross-Country (LACC) races series which is a 10-round championship series promoted by AcadianaRacing.com. Race venues test each rider’s overall ability by offering motocross sec-tions, hills, roots, woods trails and grass tracks.

Although he was among the youngest of the riders for this class, Austin raced a 2012 KTM 50SX and proved that his talent and abil-ity, along with great support from his parents and little sister, was a hard combination to beat.

Over the course of the season, Austin has won seven out of the ten rounds and received the hole shot award for eight out of ten rounds. As a result of his hard work, Austin re-

ceived an award for the 2012 LACC Overall Championship as well as the Number 1 plate, which signi-fies his accomplishments during the 2012 series, at the year end LACC awards banquet in February.

Austin would like to send a spe-cial thanks to his Dad, who is his mechanic, for always keeping his bike running in top shape.
