While many of us enjoy watching the bowl games for the football ac-tion, many families in Zachary were tuned in to the Outback Bowl on Jan-uary 1 for a very different reason—the halftime show. Hosted in Tampa, Fla., the halftime show is one of the highlights of this bowl game, held each New Year’s Day.

The show features up to 5,000 young people from more than 20 schools throughout the United States. portunity: jazz band, concert band, parade band and the halftime show competitions. According to Venable, each band is given a rating based upon their performance in each com-petition. Upon completion of each competition, bands in first, second and third place are recognized in the awards program.

The band’s hard work and prepa-ration paid off. “The jazz and concert bands both received gold ratings and second place in our classification, as well as the parade band,” stated Venable. “We received a silver rating

and first place in our classification for the halftime show competition.”

All bands also competed in a mass band performance during the Outback Bowl’s halftime show. The mass band performance involved over 2,200 musicians, 500 dancers, and 200 color guard members from 15 different schools nationwide. Some of the states represented in-cluded Missouri, Illinois, Pennsyl-vania, Ohio, Wisconsin and Georgia.

The Zachary High Band of Blue is under the direction of Jason Ven-able and Donny Alexander. “I would like to thank the Bronco Band Boost-ers for their hard work throughout the stadium seat fundraiser and con-

cessions. Without their hard work and dedication, none of this would have been possible, “ said Venable. “I would also like to thank the Zach-ary Community School Board and the ZHS administration, faculty, and staff for their continued support,” he added.

The trip cost $620 per person and was paid either out of pocket or through fundraising. The band members, chaperones, equipment and awards arrived back home in Zachary on Wednesday, January 2. Be sure to congratulate them if pos-sible and from all of us here at the Zachary Post, we say, “Great job Bronco Band members”!

Zachary Elementary Spelling Champs Georgia and Maggie Charlet organized a “Chocolate for Char-ity” stand on January 5. Thanks to donations and sales, the two young philanthropists earned over $160 for Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. From leisure classes, sports and fitness to science, nature and outdoor adventure, BREC offers something for residents of all ages and interests.

Moreau Physical Therapy is now offering pediatric therapy services in Zachary, treating most pediatric diagnoses including genetic syn-dromes, orthopedic conditions, pre-mature infants, torticollis, hypoto-nia/hypertonia, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries and autism.

Melanie Mintz, PT, DPT will lead the pediatric program. Mrs. Mintz is a graduate of the University of Tex-

as Medical Branch, Galveston, Tex. and has been practicing for over three years. She recently moved to Baton Rouge from Irvine, CA.

Melanie’s work experience in-cludes techniques such as neruro-developmental treatment, “body weight-supported gait training,” and sensory integration.

Mrs. Mintz is a member of the American Physical Therapy Associ-ation and is one of the current swim coaches for the Louisiana Special Olympics.

The team of therapists at Moreau Physical Therapy has many years of experience providing physical and occupational therapy services. Pe-diatricians and parents may call the office to schedule a pre-screening assessment in order to make sure the patient is a proper fit for therapy. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 225-654-8208 or visit www.moreaupt.com.

Moreau Offering Pediatric Therapy Services21st Century Cotillion to Launch ProgramOpportunities for young people

to properly congregate and socialize have become few and far between. Reasons for this vary greatly; but in January, middle school students in Zachary and the surrounding com-munities will have an outlet that will appeal to parents and students. The program is open to students current-ly in sixth through eighth grades and is designed to combine today’s youth activities, events, interactions and communication styles with timeless courtesies and social skills including basic ballroom dance instruction and tasteful, modern social dance styles.

”Students regularly participate in activities that build skills in sports and provide exposure to the arts, but few are offered the chance to par-ticipate in a fun, interactive learning environment which build skills that will be utilized every day of their lives. This greatly assists in provid-ing the edge needed when compet-

ing for scholarships and jobs,” said Beth Young, program director.

Topics of instruction include gift-giving and receiving, responding to invitations, electronic etiquette, refreshment table procedure, boys and girls together, introductions and shaking hands and much more–with a current-day atmosphere. The pro-gram format includes two instruc-tional club meetings, two structured dances and an end-of-semester ball.

The program will expand in the fall to offer more advanced social experiences, outings and events for high school students in ninth and tenth grades. The 21st Century Co-tillion Club will host a parents’ re-ception in mid-January to provide an overview and to accept membership registration. To request an applica-tion and receive additional informa-tion, please contact Beth Young at 985-320-0907 or by email at [email protected].

Cruise Control on 50: A Tribute of Love

Pete and Barbara Meredith cele-brate their 50th wedding anniversary on January 12, 2013. Wow! This cou-ple has managed to climb the moun-tains, walk through the valleys and cruise the rough waves of marriage for fifty years, and they are more in

Darrell and Sandra Serrett of Zachary are proud to announce the engagement and upcoming mar-riage of their daughter, Ashley Paige Serrett, to Blaine Ellis Courville, son of Gerald Courville and Lisa Debetaz of Denham Springs, La.

The bride-to-be is the granddaugh-ter of Doris L. Strickland of Zachary and the late Gerald D. Strickland, and Stonewell (Stoney) Serrett of Zach-ary and the late Mary G. Serrett. She is a graduate of Zachary High School and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Louisiana State University where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She is cur-rently a project director for The Arc of Louisiana.

The bridegroom-elect is the grandson of Ellis and Geneva De-betaz of Morganza and Gladys Kahl of Baton Rouge and the late Aswell Courville. He is a graduate of Den-ham Springs High School and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Con-struction Management from Louisi-ana State University. He is currently a project coordinator for Performance Contractors, Inc.

The couple met at their alma ma-ter, Louisiana State University.

They will marry in a ceremony on April 6, 2013 at the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge.

Lane Regional Medical Cen-ter welcomed the first baby born in 2013. Amarion Palmer, son of Am-ber Palmer of Zachary, was born January 3 at 7:29 a.m.

He weighed 8 pounds, 3.4 ounces and measured 19 inches long. Ama-rion was welcomed home by big brother, Dentre, who is 3 years old.

love today than ever. They love to go on cruises where they can relax and build more special memories together. Both Pete and Barbara will tell you that they do not have all of the answers to the situations in life that could have caused devastating marital prob-lems, but they do know and worship someone who does; Jesus is the Cap-tain of their lives, and He

calms the rough waves underneath them, leads them through their val-leys and guides them to their moun-taintops. The cruise control needs to be bumped up a little because you got a long way to go baby!
