SASK. FARMERS UNLIKELY TO B E N E F I T F R O M S P I K E I N WHEAT PRICES
cbc.ca - Grain prices are being pushed up by the unstable situation in Ukraine, but that will not be of any immediate benefit to Saskatchewan farmers, a commodities expert says.
In recent days, the Ukrainian president fled the country amid massive protests in Kyiv, followed by Russian forces moving in to occupy the Crimea region.
Ukraine is a major exporter of corn and wheat.
According to the Guardian
newspaper, the price of wheat for delivery in May rose by as much as 5.9% to $6.38 a bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade on Monday. Corn for delivery in May rose by up to 3.7% to a six-month high of $4.81 a bushel.
However, Pro Farmer Canada president Mike Jubinville, who monitors world commodity markets, s a y s S a s k a t c h e w a n’s r a i l transportation problem may prevent farmers here benefiting from those higher prices.

wheat, so you know it is an important point of export and has gotten the market’s attention,” Jubinville said. “Certainly not just in the agriculture commodities, in all markets.”
Jubinville says the grain market will continue to be volatile.
The large crop from last fall along with the harsher-than-usual winter (resulting in rail companies using shorter-than-usual trains) is slowing Saskatchewan shipments down, he said.
He sees the situation improving in several months, but by then customers may turn elsewhere for their grain — a missed opportunity.
At a fancy reception a young man was asked by a widow to guess her age. “You must have
some idea,” she urged as he hesitated. “I have several ideas,” he admitted with a smile, “the
trouble is that I don’t know whether to make it ten years
younger because of your looks or ten years older because of your
intelligence.”

TAURUS(April 20 to May 20)The Moon is in your sign today, which
can make you more emotional thanusual. This could make relations withothers, especially older friends and part-ners, a bit stressful this morning.Fortunately, this passes quickly.

supervisors and bosses in the morning, because they will only get you down.Wait until later in the day to make yourpitch or ask for permission.
CANCER(June 21 to July 22)This morning, children might be an
increased responsibility. Just accept thisand move on. Even romance is a bitrocky. Patience is the ticket.
LEO(July 23 to Aug. 22)This morning is a poor time for impor-
tant discussions with parents and olderfamily relatives. Their response will be,“Talk to the hand.” (No fun.)
VIRGO(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)Although you might begin this day
worried about something, fear not. Asthe day wears on you feel better and bet-ter! (Whew!)
LIBRA(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)Financial worries might mark the

On this day in 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Ber-lin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. Now the most common drug in household medicine cab-inets, acetylsalicylic acid was originally made from a chem-ical found in the bark of willow trees. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine, beginning in ancient Greece when Hippocrates used it to relieve pain and fever. Known to doctors since the mid-19thcentury, it was used sparingly due to its unpleasant taste and tendency to damage the stomach. In 1897, Bayer employee Felix Hoffman found a way to cre-ate a stable form of the drug that was easier and more pleas-ant to take. (Some evidence shows that Hoffman’s work was really done by a Jewish chemist, Arthur Eichengrun, whose contributions were covered up during the Nazi era.) After ob-taining the patent rights, Bayer began distributing aspirin in powder form to physicians to give to their patients one gram at a time. The brand name came from “a” for acetyl, “spir” from the spirea plant (a source of salicin) and the suffix “in,” commonly used for medications. It quickly became the num-ber-one drug worldwide. Aspirin was made available in tablet form and without a prescription in 1915. Two years later, when Bayer’s patent expired during the First World War, the company lost the trademark rights to aspirin in various countries. After the United States entered the war against Germany in April 1917, the Alien Property Custodian, a government agency that ad-ministers foreign property, seized Bayer’s U.S. assets. Two years later, the Bayer com-pany name and trademarks for the United States and Canada were auctioned off and purchased by Sterling Products Company, later Sterling Winthrop, for $5.3 million. Bayer became part of IG Farben, the con-glomerate of German chemical industries that formed the financial heart of the Nazi regime. After World War II, the Allies split apart IG Farben, and Bayer again emerged as an individual company. Its purchase of Miles Laboratories in 1978 gave it a product line including Alka-Seltzer and Flintstones and One-A-Day Vitamins. In 1994, Bayer bought Sterling Winthrop’s over-the-counter business, gaining back rights to the Bayer name and logo and al-lowing the company once again to profit from American sales of its most famous product.

TOP 10 DUMBEST CRIMINALS
10. Strike one! England: A German “tourist,” supposedly on a golf holiday, shows up at customs with his golf bag. While making idle chatter about golf, the customs official realizes that the tourist does not know what a “handi-cap” is. The customs official asks the tourist to demon-strate his swing, which he does--backward! A sub-stantial amount of narcotics was found in the golf bag.
9. “Hello? Guns for hire?” Arizona: A company called “Guns for Hire” stages gunfights for Western movies, etc. One day, they re-ceived a call from a 47-year- old woman, who wanted to have her husband killed. She got 4-1/2 years in jail.
8. Say cheese! A man successfully broke into a bank after hours and stole--are you ready for this?--the bank’s video cam-era. While it was recording. Remotely. (That is, the videotape recorder was located elsewhere in the bank, so he didn’t get the videotape of himself stealing the camera.)
7. Drop everything and run! Two men tried to pull the front off a cash machine by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front pan-el off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off their truck. Scared, they left the scene and drove home. With the chain still attached to the machine. With their bumper still attached to the chain. With their vehicle’s license plate still attached to the bumper.
6. Just forget it Virginia: Two men in a pickup truck went to a new-home site to steal a refrigerator. Banging up walls, floors, etc., they snatched a refrigerator from one of the houses, and loaded it onto the pickup. The truck promptly got stuck in the mud, so these brain sur-geons decided that the refrigerator was too heavy.
Banging up *more* walls, floors, etc., they put the re-frigerator BACK into the house, and returned to the pickup truck, only to realize that they locked the keys in the truck--so they abandoned it.
5. Ouch A man successfully broke into a bank’s basement through a street-level window, cutting himself up pretty badly in the process. He then realized that (1) he could not get to the money from where he was,(2) he could not climb back out the window through which he had entered, and (3) he was bleeding pret-ty badly. So he located a phone and dialed “911” for help . . .
4. Let’s do a little math A man walked into a Circle-K (a convenience store similar to a 7-11), put a $20 bill on the counter and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provid-ed. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled-- leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer? Fifteen dollars.
3. I know I forgot something Indiana: A man walked up to a cashier at a grocery store and demanded all the money in the register. When the cashier handed him the loot, he fled--leav-ing his wallet on the counter.
2. You mean me? A pair of Michigan robbers entered a record shop ner-vously waving revolvers. The first one shouted, “No-body move!” When his partner moved, the startled first bandit shot him.
1. The Hefty-bag A man went into a drug store, pulled a gun, an-nounced a robbery, and pulled a Hefty-bag face mask over his head--and realized that he’d forgotten to cut eye holes in the mask.

Women riding in an elevator in a very lavish Sandton building
,when a youngand beautiful woman gets into
the elevator, smelling of expensive perfume.
She turns to the old woman and says arrogantly, “Romance” by
Ralph Lauren,at $80. Then another young and
beautiful woman gets on the elevator, and also
very arrogantly turns to the old woman saying,
“Chanel No. 5, at $62.”When they got to the third flour, the old woman had reached her
destination andis about to get off the elevator. Before she leaves, she looks at
both beautiful women in the eye, “breaks a bit of wind”,
and then says ... “Koo Baked beans ... at $4.50!!”
