Standing OVATION 2018–2019 SEASON

Allyson Martens (Sally) is another actor we are welcoming to ACT for the first time. She has performed at the Des Moines Playhouse as Piggy in Elephant & Piggy’s: We Are In A Play, at Urbandale Community Theatre as Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, and for the Quad City Music Guild as Ado Annie in Oklahoma – just to name a few. She and her fiancée, Ian, reside in Ankeny and are planning a December 2019 wedding. Allyson is employed by Weiss-Merkle Financial. She loves reading, volunteering, and hanging out with her cats. Oh, she loves Ian, too!

Ashley Rogers (Lucy) relocated to the Des Moines area in April and we are glad she found us for her ACT debut. The majority of her theatre experience was at the Waterloo Community Playhouse and Cedar Falls Community Theatre—both venues are near and dear to her heart and very quickly became a second home. Some of her favorite roles were Cheryl in The Taffetas, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Ashley loves to write, research fashion blogs, collect vinyl from the 60’s/70’s, and honestly just try to be Stevie Nicks. She says her family is her biggest support and would surely not be here without their love and encouragement. Ashley is a Transaction Coordinator with the Misty SOLDwisch Home Selling Team at Better Homes and Gardens/Real Estate Innovations in Indianola. “It’s been an absolute pleasure to be in the company of such a humble, hardworking, SUPER talented, and dedicated company. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to delve back into my passion. Happiness is…..this cast and crew”.

Josh Zirkle (Linus) just portrayed Matty in Passing Notes (our first Studio Series show of this season). He also appeared in our productions of Honk! The Musical and A Few Good Men. Josh performed for the Ankeny Centennial High School Drama Club in Don’t Drink The Water, Guys and Dolls, and Elephant’s Graveyard (Elephant Trainer). He loves going out with friends, reading, relaxing, and playing board/card games. He currently works part-time at Hy-Vee making pizzas for the Italian Department. “Although I have a very quiet personality, under the surface I am very passionate for the theater arts and hope to explore more of it throughout my life – possibly on the big screen”.

Barbara Wagner (Director) is directing her 13th show for ACT - most recently February’s Almost, Maine. Her most recent appearance on our stage was last December in Christmas Chaos. Barb has performed in and/or directed approximately 175 shows in the Des Moines area. Most of her directing and acting was at the Ingersoll Dinner Theater during its 28 years in business, but she also appeared and/or directed at Class Act Productions (Altoona), Stage West, Tallgrass Theatre, Des Moines Playhouse, Urbandale Community Theatre, and Union Street Players (Pella). During the day, Barb is the administrative assistant to the Director of Financial Aid at DMACC Ankeny. Residing in West Des Moines with their two cats, Wizard and Willie Nelson, she and husband, Don, have been married for 22 years. “Thank you to my friends and family for their ongoing support of my 42-year theatre addiction! Love you more, Mom, and thisone’s for you, Elizabeth.”

Larry Mahlstedt (Assistant Director) played Mortimer in our production of The Fantasticks. Favorite roles include: Eeyore in various Winne the Pooh scripts at Ingersoll Dinner Theater and Class Act Productions; Charlie Brown and Linus in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown at Ingersoll Dinner Theater and Urbandale Community Theatre; Thenardier in Les Miserables at Newton Community Theatre; Ali Hakim in Oklahoma at Ingersoll Dinner Theater and Ames Community Theatre; Nicely Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls at Ingersoll Dinner Theater; and Wilbur Turnblad in Hairspray at Des Moines Playhouse. Larry loves to travel and does a lot of it for marathons and other runs. Spending time with friends and family is a top priority for him as well. He can be found at his full-time job as a Crop Insurance Underwriter for Farmers Mutual Hail.

Brenda McConahay (Music Director) is directing her fifth ACT production, which includes The Fantasticks, Clue: The Musical, Godspell, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She was the keyboardist at the Ingersoll Dinner Theater for ten years. Currently, she is the pianist for New Hope Methodist in Des Moines and the director of B&B Cabaret Trio. Brenda is a retired teacher from Lincoln High School in Des Moines and D.H.S. Social Worker. You canfrequently hear her playing piano at Von Maur in Valley West Mall. She has two grown children and two grandchildren. Brenda loves working at ACT!

Matt Tuttle (Producer/Lighting Designer and Technician/Set Design and Construction) serves on the ACT Board. Last season, he was in A Few Good Men and A Christmas Chaos. He’s not really an “on stage” person but prefers to be in the background. He has helped with light design, ran tech for shows, and helped build sets. Matt plays piano and occasionally develops video games for fun. He works at Active Interest Media as a Web Developer. “If you’re ever looking to get involved with tech or some other behind-the-scenes work, I’d love to chat with you!”

Ali Kirwen (Stage Manager) just can’t stop volunteering around ACT. She just finished assistant directing Frankenstein, played Ida in Honk!, and Jackie Ross in A Few Good Men. Ali has also performed in three other shows at ACT and one at ACTORs in Ames. She and her husband, Joe, can be found participating in every aspect of our theatre and we are lucky to have them. Now she is actively involved in doing props for ACT shows. Tamie is on her 4th show here with two more coming up. “In a nutshell, I like people, like to have fun, like being involved and love to shop. I have no acting experience and have no desire to act. I enjoy doing ‘behind the scenes’ stuff!” Tamie also loves to do matting and framing, painting/sign making and thrift shopping. She is employed by the State of Iowa and is a new board member here at ACT. She and her husband, Keith, reside in Ankeny and their daughter, Amanda, lives in New Hampshire and has a new husband!
