More about Cambodia.Cambodia is a small country with a big history. Now a modest player on the world stage, this was once the seat of one of Asia’s most magnificent early civilizations, the mighty Khmer empire of Angkor, whose legendary temples continue to provide a touchstone of national identity – as well as attracting millions of visitors every year. .

YMCA Alternative Tourism offers visitors the chance to experience the most impressive cultural diversities, real life of the people, and fascinating Cambodian hospitality along with the true understanding of the country’s tragic past. Visitors will witness the transformative process that has enabled the Cambodians to come out of the emotional scars of their painful history.

Finally, a visit to support the Cambodia YMCA’s action response for societal change through empowering young people will be a memorable highlight. Your participation in the tour also helps the work of the Cambodia YMCA.

Welcome to the world of YMCA tourism. The World YMCA, together with YMCA Sri Lanka, invites you to join this exciting tour especially prepared by local YMCAs and providing a unique tourism experience.

This is also a social enterprise that generates resources to support the Youth Empowerment initiatives of the World YMCA, as well local YMCA programs. These tours are not limited to just YMCA people and all are welcome to join.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

The Killing FieldsThe Killing Fields are a number of sites in Cambodia where collectively over a million people were killed and buried by the Khmer Rouge regime during 1975 to 1979, after the end of the Cambodian Civil War. The mass killings are widely regarded as part of a broad state-sponsored genocide (the Cambodian genocide).

An Estimates of the total number of deaths resulting from Khmer Rouge policies, including disease and starvation, range from 1.7 to 2.5 million out of a 1975 population of roughly 8 million.

In 1975, Tuol Svay Prey High School was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and turned into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21); it soon became the largest centre of detention and torture in the country. Between 1975 and 1978 more than 17,000 people held at S-21 were taken to the killing fields of Choeung Ek . S-21 has been turned into the Tuol Sleng Museum, which serves as a testament to the crimes of the Khmer Rouge.

The Royal PalaceWith its classic Khmer roofs and ornate gilding, the Royal Palace dominates the diminutive skyline of Phnom Penh. It's a striking structure near the riverfront, bearing a remarkable likeness to its counterpart in Bangkok.

Being the official residence of King Sihamoni, parts of the massive palace compound are closed to the public. Visitors are allowed to visit only the throne hall and a clutch of buildings surrounding it. Adjacent to the palace, the Silver Pagoda complex is also open to the public.

Siem ReapThe resort town of Siem Reap, in northwestern Cambodia, is gateway to the ruins of Angkor, the seat of the Khmer kingdom from the 9th-15th centuries. Angkor’s vast complex of intricate stone buildings includes preserved Angkor Wat, the main temple, which is pictured on Cambodia’s flag. Giant, mysterious faces are carved into the Bayon temple at Angkor Thom.

Youth InstituteThis youth development program mainly focuses on providing pathways out of poverty by teaching the youth living in the slums of Phnom Penh, Cambodia vocational training such as photography, and computer skills. These children will then apply their skills in the real world. The program also teaches academic and social skills. The youth are empowered to be confident leaders with the skills sets and resources to succeed.

Street Children ProgramThe Cambodia YMCA works with children who are the poorest of the poor in the slums of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. They do not have access to a free and quality education. They also lack basic necessities such as food and adequate shelter. In response, the Cambodia YMCA provides FREE education and food to 70 children daily. This provides a safe haven where children can learn, grow, and prosper. As these children develop, they become mentors to the younger children. Therefore, creating a positive cycle of success. Currently, over 475 children have completed the program and still stay involved in some capacity

Home Based Care For ElderlyElderly people represents a small percentage of the population in Cambodia. These elders are survivors of the genocide caused by the Khmer Rouge. Most of these survivors, have not yet healed from the effects of PTSD. In addition, many are left with no family support system. The Cambodia YMCA works with elders by creating an environment where they are valued as assets. Their experience and knowledge are invaluable to help create a better Cambodia by sharing their stories with the younger generations.

CAMBODIA YMCAThe Cambodia YMCA‘s mission is to enhance the body, mind and spirit for the improvement of the
