I. Introduction• CSES 2003-04 is a multi-topic household survey with a very
extensive questionnaire. In the survey a special time use module was also included. This is the first time use survey ever conducted in Cambodia.
• CSES was carried out on a nationwide representative sample of 15,000 households within 900 Primary Sampling Units (PSU) corresponding to 867 villages with 17 particular modules. It was divided into 15 monthly samples of 1,000 households each in 60 PSUs from November 2003 till January 2005.
• CSES was planned and designed by the staff of the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) with overall technical and management assistance provided by Statistics Sweden and with UNDP and Sida funds.
• The 1998 Population Census of Cambodia was used as sampling frame in the sampling design of the CSES 2003-04.
• The time use profile was analyzed are based the 12 month sample.
II. Time use module
There are 22 activities for whole population aged 5 years and over:1. Sleeping
2. Eating, drinking, personal care
3. School (also homework)
4. Work as employed
5. Own business work
6. Tending rice
7. Tending other crops
8. Tending animals
9. Fetching water
10. Collecting firewood

11. Hunting12. Fishing13. Buying/shopping14. Construction15. Weaving, sewing, textile care16. Handicraft (not textile)17. Cooking18. Washing, cleaning19. Care of children/elder20. Travels21. Leisure time22. Other (specify……….)
III. Time use instruction
Time measured in half hours within 24 hours one day Enter the PSU number and the Serial Number of the
Household. After, mark with a ‘X’ the day of the week the person
filled-out this sheet (An ‘X’ below Monday or An ‘X’ below Tuesday, etc.) But only one day should be marked.
Write the name of the household member Mark with an ‘X’ the Id Number of the person who will
complete the sheet. For example, if the household member who will fill-out the sheet is Id Number ‘04’, then mark with a ‘X’ the box below the number ‘04’:Example:
IV. Results of seven main groups of activities
Seven main groups of activities: Market work (work as employed, own business……..) Agriculture and related activities (tending rice, crops,
animals, hunting, fishing,………….) Household production (fetching water, collecting
firewood, weaving, handicraft,……..) House work (shopping, cooking, washing, taking care of
