October 2: October 2: October 2: October 2: Why Study Talmud in the 21st Century? Why Study Talmud in the 21st Century? Why Study Talmud in the 21st Century? Why Study Talmud in the 21st Century? ~ Paul Socken~ Paul Socken~ Paul Socken~ Paul Socken The Talmud is the repository of thousands of years of Jewish wisdom: it is a conglomerate of law, legend, and philosophy; a blend of unique logic and shrewd pragmatism; a mix of history and science; and an amalgamation of anecdote and humour. Unfortunately, its complex subject sometimes seems irrelevant to today's world. This presentation is based on information from sixteen eminent North American and Israeli scholars from several schools of Jewish thought who grapple with the text and tradition of the Talmud. The diverse feminist, rabbinic, educational, and philosophical approaches are as varied as the contributors’ experiences.
Paul Socken, Ph.D., is the founder of the Jewish Studies programme at the University of Waterloo. After 37 years on the faculty, he is currently a Distinguished Professor Emeritus. His most recent book is The Edge of the Precipice: Why Read Literature in the Digital Age? (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2013). He is a contributor to the Canadian Jewish News and a member of the Board of the Canadian Magen David Adom for Israel.
Emergency Food Station
There will be an emergency food station set up in the elevator room, adjacent to the foyer, where people who feel unwell on Yom Kippur may have water,
juice or a light snack to assist them.
