Just a few words, yet a lot of thought and time in their production. We’re determined that our ambitious vision for the future is shared and understood by our whole community and wanted to take the opportunity of coming together and developing a statement that (at least in part) represents our values and purpose as a school. A great school is so much more than just an ‘exam factory’, or an inspection rating, or just living from one set of results to the next. We want to grasp learning in a manner that sets us up for the rest of our lives and gaining the empowerment that comes from working collaboratively; students who are adaptable, resilient and respectful. This message has been coming through loudly and clearly from students and staff as we have prepared these words, which will be featuring across our school for many years to come. However, I would be the first to recognise that great words can only take us so far. Understanding what it means to be an expert learner and getting a real sense of empowerment will take time and energy and commitment – from us all! Yateley 50. As you are probably aware, we are approaching Yateley School’s Golden Jubilee. We’ve already had expressions of interest from former students and staff across the country and we’re planning a programme of all sorts of activities and events for this summer and into September. There will be more details forthcoming in due course and our students will have plenty of opportunity to get involved in the festivities. If you’d like a further insight, please see https://youtu.be/DCsZxdQQu2I where former Chair of Governors Wendy Cairns who has been involved with the school for many years and sent her own children here, reflects on the importance of the celebration. You will, I hope, excuse my cameo appearance at the end! As an act of real guts and determination, nothing much beats Chloe Mitchell in 10PN’s bungee jump undertaken in the Christmas holidays. She jumped from Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa which at 216 metres (709 feet) is the world's highest commercial bridge bungee. Quite extraordinary. Key Stage 4 Choices. Thank you to our Year 9 parents who came along in great number to our Key Stage 4 Choices evening on Thursday. Although there are constraints on what schools can offer in the current climate – all of which was explained, we are extremely proud to be offering an options choice which is extremely broad, engaging and ambitious. I can say without hesitation that our offer would be the envy of most schools, along with our success rate. I hope parents found the evening worthwhile and we’ll look forward to seeing you again for the parents’ subject review evening on 25 th January.

I’m very pleased to inform you that we have been able to bring forward our Sixth Form Interviews for current Year 11 students which will commence next week. Record numbers are looking at our Sixth Form from both Yateley students and from other schools. This has to be a real indicator of the quality of our sixth form where ‘value-added’ exceeds other local providers. With increased content, rigour and a different assessment process we will be moving towards the pattern established in virtually every sixth form of studying three subjects in Year 12 rather than four. This will not have any impact on prospects at higher education and will improve the chances of success. However Mr Mather, Director of Sixth Form, is happy to discuss this further if there are any concerns. Student star of the week I am delighted to celebrate the fantastic Jess Cannon in 11NS. Jess epitomises the school’s values with her exemplary conduct, assistance and achievement. She excels in many of her subjects and invariably helps at events in the school. She has come to the fore as star of the week for having mentored a Year 7 student who has struggled with coming to school through anxiety. Jess has given up numerous breaks to meet with this student and her friends and helped them to overcome any difficulties. Paul German Headteacher

More about James Wilton Dance... After graduating from London Contemporary Dance School in 2009 James founded his company James Wilton Dance. James’ work has toured to internationally and won awards at the Hannover, Bern and Masdanza Choreography competitions, as well as the Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest. James’ most recent company work Last Man Standing toured to over 60 venues since its creation in 2014 and has been seen by over 15,000 people. LEVIATHAN follows Ahab, a ship captain hell-bent on capturing the white whale: Moby Dick, a beast as vast and dangerous as the sea itself, yet serene and beautiful beyond all imagining. Ahab’s crew are drawn into the unhinged charisma of their captain, blindly following him on his perilous adventure towards almost certain destruction. Featuring a cast of 7, Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partner-work, LEVIATHAN will have you on the edge of your seat. It will leave you gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement, all accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul. LEVIATHAN is man versus nature; be careful what you fish for! Attached to this email is the booking form, if you would like these printed please let us know how many you would like and we will send them to you. We also have some great leaflets for LEVIATHAN which we would be happy to send. See photos attached to get an idea of James Wilton's work and also take a look at our website for more information and to see the LEVIATHAN trailer- www.dancewoking.com/event-category/feb2018-half-term/ If you need any more information or would like booking forms and leaflets printed please contact us using the details below.
