A NOTE FROM THE EDITORHello readers and welcome to the October issue of The Yateley Online Magazine This month we wanted to turn our attention to activity in the local community so this month we bring you a magazine entirely dedicated to local content

But first we have an announcement from the Yateley Online Magazine team It is with great sadness that this will be the last issue of the magazine This decision was not made lightly and we will greatly miss the work and relationships we have made within the Yateley Community

We have made no secret of the fact that we run the magazine as a community interest and we run a separate business as our main income Due to the quick growth of the business we are no longer able to give the magazine the time and dedication it needs We want to say a huge thank you to all of our contributors advertisers and everyone within the community who has supported us in the creation and growth of the magazine We would not have been able to do it without you and you have our sincerest thanks

Itrsquos been a great 2 years and we will miss it

Local Musician Turned Rising Star


Yateley is a town just bursting with talent and now local singer songwriter Henry Fricker is the next of our rising stars Henry tells us about his musical journeylsquoMy name is Henry Fricker an 18 year old singer- songwriter and pianist from Yateley Hampshire I grew up in Yateley attending Westfieldrsquos Junior School Yateley School and Farnborough Sixth Form College

During my time at Yateley School I played a large role in the music department- expressing my passion for music and performing through numerous live performances and taking part in the majority of events put on under direction and guidance of the head of the music department Tanja Pejović In 2010 I started taking piano lessons after a natural attraction and flare for the instrument having the intention to have the ability to be able to play songs that I had heard and loved by my biggest musical influences Since then I have flourished on the piano and musically solidifying the aim for a career within music and the music industry starting to write play and sing my own songs since 2012

After 5 years at Yateley School I decided to study my A-Levels at The Sixth Form College Farnborough one of which was Music Technology Within this course I developed my current music ability and expertise whilst learning many new skills within the recording and production of music This enhanced my passion for music as I was learning lots about what happens behind-the-scenes of music production within studios creating lots of recordings and working

within the on-site recording studio Whilst at Farnborough I decided to take hold of my music ability and start work on aiming for a music career becoming more confident to perform my original compositions to my peers and audience members who gave me a good reception This boosted my confidence that I had

the rare ability to write songs and connect with strangers through my lyrics and music I have pursued music as a solo artist with only my voice my songs the piano and my fierce determination and ambition

I have recently been in contact with InSound Studios based in Woking and recorded a cover and one of my original songs ldquoSelf Independencerdquo as part of their InSound InSessions which was filmed and broadcasted on their Youtube channel After being in contact with the producer of InSound Studios Jack Wells he showed an interest in working with me to develop my music career further and making the most of my talent as a solo artist I was lucky enough to be offered a recording contract with InSound Media and on 1st July 2015 I signed Together we are currently working on a single that we aim to release later this year which will be available to purchase download and enjoy It is coming along very nicely and I am so excited for the releasersquo

About Faith Under Fire

A dark prologue which just maybe gives the reader the general idea of the story line but in Annie Watkinsonrsquos Faith under Fire English village life centred on its church opens up a story that you canrsquot put down

Kate Hartwood a spinster at the age of thirty-five seeks to reinvent herself and her life by escaping from a good career and a smothering home life to a country cottage bequeathed to her by an aunt The quiet village of Ashton Kirby is the setting and Katersquos life is set to change by means of a job advert in the local post office

Initially the perfect chocolate box scene is set the village is a close and happy community but changes are abound and race along at a pace that is almost breathless Peoplersquos lives are brilliantly and cleverly intertwined with a true typical village lifestyle but remains faithful to the support of the community Annie is the author of a poetry anthology Listen to My Heart After studying mental health nursing at the University of Southampton she had to give up after suffering serious illness including a diagnosis of breast cancer This led her to spend more time writing as a freelance journalist and enjoying her family This is her first novel

Can you tell us a bit about your book

Faith Under Fire follows the trials and tribulations of three young women as tragedies alter their lives irrevocably Soon the whole village finds that the ripples caused by one tragedy have repercussions for everyone in ways that no one could have anticipated

Kate tries to find peace by leaving the City and taking a post in a tranquil village church


Sophie is ecstatic when she discovers she is pregnant the day the old vicar dies Is this a sign

Vikki is the harassed vicarrsquos wife and mother of three lively children She thinks life is chaotic enough but then she finds a lump in her breast

As for Josh he is the all-singing all-dancing vicar who holds the village in his hands and offers succour and comfort to all Until he loses his wife closely followed by his faith

How do you cope when everything falls apart Find out how laughter and tears healed a community

What inspired you to write Faith Under Fire

I have been writing stories and poetry since I was a child I do not have a choice as lines for poems and stories keep me awake at night until I get them down on paper (or the iPad nowadays) Due to ill health I had to give up work and so I started working as a freelance writer Originally it was for nursing journals and then I also branched out to my other passion crafting I have written for many craft magazines and had a regular column for over eighteen months I also wrote and published a poetry anthology entitled lsquoListen To My Heartrsquo But lsquoFaith Under Firersquo has been trickling away for several years I used to write a bit of it and then leave it for a few months before having to go back to the beginning to remember who was who

How did living in Yateley influence your writing

The quiet fictional village of Ashton Kirby is based on the epicentre of Yateley Although now a so-called town and expanded so much throughout the last four decades what fascinates me is the close proximity of church health centre retirement home and undertakers With its village green the centre of Yateley still has the trappings of a village and this is how my story starts

I have lived in Yateley for nearly forty years and during that time I have witnessed first-hand the devastation of St Peterrsquos church and how it affected the whole community Although it was a long time ago it still haunts me when I walk through the alleyways leading to the church and I can fully remember the acrid smell sight and sounds of that ruined building and the stunned disbelief of the onlookers


What sort of challenges have you faced both in writing and publication of your debut novel

As I previously stated writing over a long period of time does mean a lot of backtracking and re-reading and so I set myself the task of finishing the novel in a month It was an amazingly liberating experience and the story started to write itself and go off at tangents I would never have expected Obviously I then had a lot of editing and rewriting to do but at least I knew the whole tale now and I could start the laborious task of sending my manuscript off to various agents and publishers It took four years and many many rejection slips and I was on the verge of giving up with this particular book but suddenly I had three publishers all within the space of a month offering me a contract

Is there anyone you would like to thank or mention

As well as writing my book I have had to deal with having an aggressive form of breast cancer and I have undergone spinal surgery many times as well as other health issues Writing this book would have been impossible without the love and support of my incredible husband Mike and my three children Joanna and Rebecca were my first readers and helped me shape the novel and my son Ian did the artwork for the cover He was able to understand exactly how I wanted the cover to be and I think he has caught the atmosphere of my novel perfectly

And of course whatrsquos next

Oh I am very excited about my next book It is set in both Dorset and Romania Ruby and Charlie are three year old twins when Ruby vanishes from the busy Bournemouth beach She has been stolen to order by Romanian gypsies and is off across the border at Harwich before the police are even able to set up roadblocks The story is set just after the fall of Ceausescu and the rich childless couple do not want to risk adopting a Romanian orphan because of the risk of AIDS and poor mental health of the abandoned children So Ruby grows up as Dumitra and Charlie his parents and his siblings have to grow up without their sister

Twenty two years later Dumitra and Charlie meet in unexpected circumstances never knowing they are twins So far I have the title of lsquoThe Missing Piecersquo but this may well change




CELEBRATING 1 YEAROf Yateley Netwking




Yateley Networking was born on 1st October 2014 and is just about to celebrate its first year of running But what is Yateley Networking all aboutThe Yateley Networking event was established by Tara and Karen from Abstract Print amp Design They decided to start up this networking group for Yateley and local areas to Yateley because in attending other networking groups leading up to the launch of Abstract a year and a half ago it became apparent that there were not any groups in the Blackwater or Yateley area

The event takes place at Yateley Industries which is a charity in Yateley that provides employment and training for people with disabilities This was chosen as the venue because it is of special significance to the Abstract team Karen had worked there for 21 years before joining Abstract and felt it was central to Yateley and that the networking event could in turn support this charity So bringing these two elements together this would result in promoting businesses in the local area and enable them to network and also promote Yateley Industries and inform the local community to what they do and how the community and local businesses may be able to support this charity

Yateley Industries for the Disabled have been making a difference to disabled and vulnerable people for over 75 years At Yateley Industries the aim is to encourage each individual to fulfil his or her own potential both in the home and at work and to promote independence This is achieved by providing paid meaningful employment in our supported factory and assisted accommodation where desirable wwwyateleyindustriescouk Yateley Industries also have a voluntary fundraising group Supporters of the DAY Appeal (Disabled at Yateley) They were initially established to help support the charity in maintaining the residential accommodation Along with this their aim is also to enhance the social aspect of the disabled clientrsquos lives by organising and subsidising activities and outings This all plays a part in encouraging the clients to build confidence and social interaction The group is formed mainly of the clientrsquos relatives and associates of Yateley Industries who meet on a regular basis to discuss and plan their annual events

The type of events that take place both on site and externally include Race nights Skittles Barbecues Seasonal discos Games afternoons Leisure trips and activities (Museum Theatre etc) and Warner Leisure weekends Although some of the above are just for social occasions


some events help to fundraise by ticket sales and raffle draws Other ways that SODA raise funds include Jumble sales Local fairs and Recycling

The morning networking events started on the 1st October 2014 and with its continued success a quarterly evening event has been started Both meetings are for all local businesses to connect and exchange knowledge at the same time as supporting each other

Morning Event

NO membership and NO need to book Just turn up and pay pound5 each month to cover the venue and light refreshments including freshly baked pastries from Sandhurst Bakery It starts with open networking then a 10 minute speaker will give their presentation each month followed by a one minute introduction round for all attendees to then go back into relaxed networking

Evening Event

This is held in the restaurant La Galleria providing a relaxed and sociable environment to network with other local businesses La Galleria provides refreshments and there are opportunities for all businesses to introduce themselves to the group Tickets are pound10 which includes refreshments and use of the venue

After any costs are taken out the remaining proceeds are donated to Yateley Industries and fed back into the charity

We all have an artist inside us and now is your chance to get inspired by seeing the beautiful works of local artists in their annual art exhibitThe Palaquin Wednesday Art Group will be holding their Annual Exhibition on Saturday 10th October (10am ndash 5pm) and Sunday 11th October (10am ndash 4pm) at Finchampstead Memorial Hall The works displayed will include a wide range of styles and subjects from all members and all of the works will be up for sale

Who Are The Palaquin Wednesday Art Group

The Palaquin Wednesday Art Group meet on Wednesdays at St Maryrsquos Church Hall in Eversley and are a small informal and relaxed group of like-minded people who enjoy painting together Each member has their own particular style and speciality ndash some enjoy painting in oils whilst others specialise in watercolour acrylics pastels and charcoal The subjects range widely too from landscapes and still life to pet portraits flowers and coastal scenes Some members have exhibited in galleries in London and the South East as well as in local art shows

The group started in January 1988 - Jean Keeble and Kristine Walker are two of the original members who still attend each Wednesday Carole Verstringhe Babs Groves and Jean Slaney all joined shortly after and the group today also includes David Phillips Alex Phipps Elise Lynch Miriam Jory Lindy King and Christine Sharp Originally tutored by the late Brian Gallagher they are now guided by well-known local artist Nigel Moores

Admission and parking for the exhibition are free so do come along and meet the artists You will find much to admire in the works on display and it could be the ideal place to find the perfect present for relatives friends or just for you

Enjoy Some Music For A Good Cause

We all love to give to a good cause and recently we have seen a lot of good deeds and charitable work from Yateley residents So now sit back and enjoy a concert while helping those in needThis month local adult homeless charity The Vine are doing something very special and putting on a concert to raise money for their cause Local group Crondall Community Choir have graciously agreed to help them by performing at the concert to help those most in need right on our doorstep

The concert will cost just pound10 (of pound750 in advance) and all proceeds will be donated to The Vine Centre to support their programmes So if yoursquore free on the 17th of October come on down to Holy Trinity Church in Aldershot for 7pm and enjoy the music and the charitable works

Who Are The Vine

Established for 27 years in Aldershot and originally run as a soup kitchen from a church hall We now support homeless and vulnerable adults from across North East Hampshire and The Blackwater Valley Clients include street homeless sofa surfers and the vulnerably housed

The Vine Centre exists to help change the lives of the most disadvantaged members of our community those who lack even the basics of modern living that we regularly take for granted The services offered range from essential daily care such as hot food laundry amp shower facilities to life changing opportunities including housing advicesupport job club and interview guidance The centre offers a safe and familiar meeting place where clients can engage with the relevant support agencies

The aim is to improve the wellbeing of each of our clients Our Journey Programme offers more than 20 services delivered Monday to Friday each aimed to restore personal confidence and renew hope and opportunity to every client


As well as all the regular services The Vine Centre also manages The Night Shelter Project which opens Nov-Mar when the temperature drops to below freezing This is literally a lifeline to some of the most vulnerable clients

None of the work carried out at The Vine would be possible without the support of local businesses community churches and individuals who donate so generously with time services and funding

This traditional dessert is still a firm family favourite today combining the classic flavours of strawberries and cream with crisp homemade pastry and plump juicy strawberries This recipe takes a little time but produces stunning results and itrsquos so easy yoursquoll be a pastry pro in no time

Ingredients

For The Pastry

200g of plain white flour100g of softened butter

For The Cregraveme Patisserie

bull 275ml of whole milkbull 1 vanilla pod halved and seeds scraped outbull 75g caster sugarbull The zest of frac12 a lemonbull 1 tbsp plain flourbull 2 tbsp cregraveme fraicircchebull 200g fresh strawberries hulled

For The Glaze

bull Strawberry Jam

Method

Make The Pastry

bull Put the flour and butter into a large bowl and rub together with your fingers The mix should resemble fine breadcrumbs

bull Stir in 4 tbsp of cold water and bring the pastry together into a sticky ball with your hands Wrap the dough in cling film and rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes


bull Preheat the oven to 180 degc Put the pastry onto a floured surface and roll out to a 3mm thickness then press into a 24cm tart tin using your fingers and a small piece of torn off dough (so your fingernails donrsquot tear it) Cut away any pastry that hands over the edge

bull Place in the freezer for 30 minutes then bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown Leave to cool

Make The Cregraveme Patisserie

bull Put the milk and vanilla pod into a pan and bring it to the boil Once boiling take the mix off the heat and leave it to infuse for 5 minutes

bull Whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl for 3 minutes until light Fold in the flour and lemon zest

bull Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture whisking continuously

bull Clean out the pan then pour the mixture back in and gently return to the boil stirring until thickened Take the pan off the heat when boiling and pour into a bowl Leave to chill in the fridge

bull Discard the vanilla pod If the mixture is a little lumpy pass it through a sieve

bull Fold the cregraveme fraicircche through the mixture and spoon into the tart tin

Assemble

bull Put 3-4 tablespoons of the jam into a pan and heat until soft and liquid

bull Halve the strawberries and place on the cregraveme patisserie in concentric circles staring from the middle Brush on the jam glaze and leave to set in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving

Itrsquos Changed The Way We Talk

Have you ever said the word lsquoLOLrsquo out loud Did the word lsquoSelfiersquo even exist 5 years ago Maybe abbreviated sentences or cut out syllables to make things quicker to say Text speak and social media go together like green eggs and ham and itrsquos not surprising that itrsquos started to seep into our everyday language Whether itrsquos shortening words and sentences or simple adding new words to our vocabulary there is no denying social media is having a marked impact on the evolution of our language

Our Friendships Will Never Be The Same

In the good old days if you wanted to talk to your friends you picked up the phone or walked over to their house You waited to talk to them at school at work or down the pub on Friday night Whichever method you chose there was a personal connection involved and this included the audio and visual clues to good conversation that go along with it Now we message our friends online relying on little symbols called lsquoemojirsquosrsquo to show our emotions Almost everyone reading this will have at some point in their life misunderstood the meaning of a text because there were no physical clues to help them out A playful insult with a smile and wink in person can start a raging argument over text because there is no indicator that this is a joke We have also changed the way we value friendships If we have 300 friends on Facebook we count that as having loads of friends despite the fact that we havenrsquot seen or spoken to some of them in years Our friendships are now being measured more and more by the interaction we have on social media and not by the real life encounters

Anyone Can be An Expert

Thanks to the Internet and social media anyone with a keyboard can voice an opinion and expect it to be heard and worshiped by the online world Blogging sites are popping up like rabbits letting everyone have a voice We think this is fantastic ndash as it raises the profile of brilliant people who would never have a voice otherwise On the other hand it has created a mire of fraudsters bloggers of questionable character and downright idiots all of whom can sound convincing On the flip side of that coin it has made us very good at sniffing out bullshitters and understanding when something is fact and when it is opinion or just a downright lie


Vanity Prevails

Think back even a few years ago Would you keep a photo album full of your own photos Hundreds of pictures of yourself pouting and posing trying to get the perfect shot No of course not But in the age of social media this is what we find ndash and it is reinforced with lsquolikesrsquo and lsquofollowersrsquo Networks like Instagram were developed to allow us to post pictures of ourselves our food and our cats all over the Internet and while this can be a bonding exercise for some it is pure vanity to others

Romantic Relationships Have Morphed

In the past if you wanted to go on a date your would ask a friend to set you up go to a singles bar or perhaps dip your toe into speed dating But with the Internet came the invention of online dating and the world was forever changed Wersquore not saying online dating is a new thing ndash itrsquos as old as the Internet but social media has rapidly changes the way we (particularly the young ones) are viewing relationships Tinder is one of the biggest culprits here ndash it created the dating-hook-up hybrid and opened up the doors for lsquocoolrsquo online dating for youths Profiles on online dating sites went through the roof and itrsquos not surprising that we can see changes in the way we view relationships Often now dating is just for passing fancies and quick flings not for settling down and finding lsquothe onersquo Itrsquos easy to forget that in a culture of instant gratification like social media relationships are broken as easily as theyrsquore forged

Now we arenrsquot the people to be bashing social media ndash we think itrsquos great It opens up new avenues for business helps you find lots loved ones reconnect with old friends and has inspired communities to band together in the interest of a common goal But it has undeniably changed the way we think and act and this has a knock on effect in the way we form relationships in our personal and business lives as well as the way we communicate with each other So next time you go to say lsquoselfiersquo stop and think ndash would I have said this 10 years ago

Join writer and BBC expert Steve Bradley who starred in Garden Doctors and who went on to a second career as a writer His range includes books magazine articles and support booklets for BBCrsquos Ground Force and he is a newspaper gardening correspondent

Steve can be found at various flower shows including the Chelsea Flower Show every year ndash he exhibits there on behalf of the Sun newspaper in their capacity as sponsors to horticultural students

Our meeting starts at 730pm with Tea and Coffee available at 50p a raffle is also available Meetings are held at Hedgecroft Bracken lane Yateley GU46 6JW We welcome non members for just pound2 entrance fee
