A NOTE FROM THE EDITORHello everyone and welcome to the March issue of The Yateley Online Magazine

This month we have been looking into the past to see what makes Yateley the village it is and we wanted to share some of its history with you In particular our feature piece this month is from chairman of the Yateley Sports CIC on the origin of the football club home ground namesake Sean Devereux and the amazing things he did for underprivileged children in Africa And if our articles here arenrsquot enough - why not pop along to The Yateley Societyrsquos March meeting and go on a historical journey with them through property history in Yateley

We are also introducing a local man with a big story - Tim Glover who is finally achieving his dream of becoming a motorsport driver We will be following Tim on his journey around the UK in his races from next month so this month we find out a bit more about the man behind the helmet Speaking of introductions new community website Your Yateley are introduced and we find out a bit about what they do and why

We have talked a lot recently about the Yateley Unit-ed Football Club and their purchase of Sean Devere-ux Park but this month we wanted to talk about how the park got its name and why itrsquos such an important community assetWe interviewed chairman of the Yateley Sports CIC and upstanding Yateley community activist Colin Ive about the namesake of the sports club grounds and why it means so much to the community

The term lsquolocal herorsquo is often used these days to describe people who have performed important community tasks and rightly are recognised for this Whilst this is laudable it is hard to believe that anyone recog-nised as such would not be the first to agree that true heroes are those that gave much much more than time effort or even money - they gave their lives

A recent entry in the Yateley Community facebook page has made refer-ence to one of Yateleyrsquos true heroes Adam Brown Adam was a Royal Marine who lost his life whilst serving his country in Afghanistan in 2010 The reference was regarding whether or not the residents of the road named after Adam lsquoAdam Brown Avenuersquo on the development of Clarks Farm knew who he was This question set me thinking about how quick-ly the years go by and how easy it can be for memories to fade and at the same time for new residents to have little or no knowledge of the past true heroes of our community Those who gave their lives for their country and whose names should be revered and remembered

We recognise those who fell fighting in the world wars of the 20th cen-tury and other skirmishes with the recording of their names on the war memorial in Reading Road Names which are read out at every Remem-brance Day service To reinforce this remembrance Graham Fleuty has written an excellent book ldquoYateley Men at War - Heartbeats of Remem-brancerdquo about those who fell in World War One chronicling how many of these men gave their lives (copies are available from the Yateley Town Council offices) In addition to this book more detailed work has been undertaken by the Yateley Society

There is however another young man from our community who should be remembered a young man who gave his life for others yet whose name will not be found on any war memorial as he spent his time in war zones doing all he could to feed and protect children from the ravages and brutality of war So successful was he in doing this on one dark night


in Somalia he was murdered by a war lord His name is Sean DevereuxSeanrsquos family lived in Chandlers Lane Yateley and growing up in Yateley he walked the same streets and enjoyed the same open spaces as our chil-dren do today Sean attended Salesian college in Farnborough and went on to graduate from Birmingham University with a joint degree in Sports Sci-ence and Geography before going on to gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Exeter University During his studies and subsequent work as a school teacher Sean developed an interest which became a passion for working with underprivileged children in under developed countries This passion was so strong that he soon volunteered to work in a Salesian school in Liberia Africa and these experiences led him to perform similar aid work in war torn Somalia where the war torn country ultimately claimed his life

The full story of Sean the type of man he was and the tremendous work he did in setting up feeding stations whilst doing all he could to protect children from becoming child soldiers can be found in the book written by his family ldquoWhile My Heart Beatshelliprdquo The Sean Devereux Story 1964-1993

Following Seanrsquos murder many tributes were made about him with probably the most significant being the following ldquoHe was a lsquosoldier of peacersquo who has given his life in the cause of helping othersrdquo Dr Boutros Boutros-Ghali ndash UN Secretary General

Many such kind words were written and spoken about Sean following his death and importantly more tangible memorials have also been created

in his name with the most important of these being the Sean Devereux Chil-drenrsquos Fund a registered UK charity set up to raise funds and enable work with underprivileged children in Africa to continue At a local level his commu-nity via Yateley Town Council and using land leased from a gravel company created in his name the sports fields of lsquoSean Devereux Parkrsquo A fitting memo-rial for a young man who had a passion for sport and located in the same area where he spent his childhood Today hundreds of children enjoy sport there on an almost weekly basis

The recent purchase of much of the park by Yateley United FC has brought the land into the ownership of a local community focused organisation who are committed to ensure that this will always be lsquoSeanrsquos parkrsquo where our chil-dren and our childrenrsquos children will be able to come along and enjoy sport with constantly improving facilities whilst at the same time remembering Sean and the work he did




A local man has finally made his dream come true and will be competing in a national motorsport series this year We will be following Timrsquos journey throughout the year and bringing you his racing results but first we interviewed Tim to get to know the man behind the helmet lsquoIt all started for me at about the age of four My dad and uncle used to sit and watch the Formula One on a Sunday and something about it fascinated me I also started to watch supporting the cars that I liked the look of but having no idea who was winning After that the more I watched the more I wanted to watch and was soon hooked on all kinds of racing it didnrsquot matter if it had 2 wheels or 4 wheels as long as it was fast

My first experience of live motorsport was at the final round of the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch in 2001 by that time I was 11 It was far different to anything I had watched on TV The speed the cars flew past the smell of tyre rubber and race fuel and the noise that vibrates the seat yoursquore sitting in itrsquos an assault on your senses The weather that day was enough to put most first timers off I would have been drier if I had got in the shower But from then on I was regularly sitting in the grandstand dreaming that one day people would be watching a car fly round with my name on the window It was almost exactly 10 years before my dream became a reality

Most young kids cut their teeth in karting but despite having Camberley Kart Track within earshot of my house I didnrsquot have any sort of budget which would allow me to start racing Therefore my first involvement came as a volunteer circuit marshal helping to run the same events that I was previously a spectator at For a motorsport enthusiast that either canrsquot or doesnrsquot want to race themselves there is no better way to get involved It gives you the chance to get up close to the teams and drivers access areas that the general public canrsquot not to mention watching the action from the best seat in the house Unfortunately even that wasnrsquot enough to satisfy my motorsport needs

After a few more years of hoping an opportunity for me to become a racing driver would present itself I realised that if I wanted it I would have to go out and make it happen So that is exactly what I did In January 2011 I took and passed my ARDS (Association of Racing Drivers Schools) test after having only driven on a race circuit once the


week before on a track day in my Vauxhall Corsa The test is a mixture of a theory test and a practical driving assessment and once you pass you can apply for your first competition licence a Race National B licence

I then spent the next few months deciding on which race series I wanted to race in and ending up making my motorsport debut in the UK Ford Fiesta Championship at Brands Hatch in June that year People called me mad turning up at the weekend to race having not even seen the car I would be racing never mind driving it Despite this I had a competitive weekend being the fastest rookie driver and getting two solid finishes under my belt

Regrettably the races have been few and far between since then due to a lack of funding and I have been left frustrated on the side lines watching drivers that I had previously beaten go on to win championships Despite these frustrating years I have persevered and I will finally compete in a full season during 2015 which is currently completely self-funded I am hugely excited to finally achieve what I have been working towards for so long and intend to grab my opportunity with both hands I am looking forward to sharing it with yoursquo

We will be keeping you up to date with Timrsquos progress through his 2015 season every month with racing stats and photos of his appearances We canrsquot wait to share in this journey with Tim and bring you along with us for a ride in the racing passenger seat

This month the Yateley Society will be holding a very special event for all the residents of Yateley to enjoy They will be holding a historical slide show of Yateley featuring both public and private residences and their exciting histories The slideshow will feature photographs of Yateleyrsquos most well known spots - including The White Lion The Dog amp Partridge St Peters Church Darby Green and Cricket Hill as well as historical residential homes that still stand today such as Monteagle House Kerala (aka The Haven) Old Cottage and The Manor House (aka Yateley Manor)

As well as an informative slideshow and a fantastic array of speakers the room will be occupied by many local historians all of whom conducted the main research into Yateley in the first place These experts will be on hand throughout the evening to answer any questions or queries you might have about the buildings and their history As an added bonus a lot of our members have lived in Yateley their entire lives and will be able to give you firsthand accounts of what the village was like 70+ years ago

The Yateley Society would also like to invite anyone who can bring local photos or stories they can share with the group along to the evening as we are hoping for a lively presentation with a lot of audience interaction and excitement

There will be images available for purchase on the night and a booklet detailing the history of Church End available to read The event will be held on Thursday the 19th of March in the Red Cross Centre on Monteagle Lane and is free to attend Doors will open at 745 and anyone - member or non-member - is welcome we hope to see you there



Over the last few months there has been much debate about the recent housing development plans on the Urnfield estate and on the 24th of February a decision was finally made by Hart District CouncilTo the pleasure of many Yateley residents the council have decided to issue a Notice of Refusal which constitutes a formal and unanimous decision by the council to refuse planning permission for the development The proposed development which involved turning a historic burial site into a housing estate with 150 new homes was met with outrage by the local community The site is located between Moulsham Lane and Chandlers Lane in Yateley and was the site of the historic discovery during gravel works in the 1920rsquos Shortly after the planning application was filed by developer Welbeck Strategic Land local residents and community groups (including The Yateley Society) lodged their objections expressing concerns over the risk of flooding over-development and the high impact on traffic that the development would incur

Unfortunately Urnfield has been a target for developers for many years but attempts have been rebuffed or stopped before they had started and this development plan is no exception While the 25-acre site is inaccessible to the public it has recently been home to temporary structures for storage and equestrian activities While the plans submitted also wanted to create a recreation space spaces for 230 cars and improvements to allow safe access for pedestrians residents were still concerned about the greater impact this development would have on the community

Residents and protestors have already commented that they are extremely happy that planning permission has been refused even though Welbeck Strategic Land has the right to appeal against the decision We will keep you updated on the situation if an appeal is made - but for now the Urnfield site is still a historical site of interest and will not be built on

DCL Drains Helps Clear Drainage at Sean Devereux Park

When the heavy rains hit Yateley last week it was an inconvenience to most but a disaster to Yateley United Football Club at their home grounds of Sean Devereux Park However local business DCL Drains rose to the occasionDespite the rain Desi Govender of DCL Drains gave up his Saturday morning to help Yateley United FC DCL Drains who offer specialist services to clear blocked drains soon found the root of the problem ldquoThe land drain was partially blocked with rootsrdquo said Desi Govender ldquoBut the larger problem we identified is that the pipe has been crushed by tractors driving over them to access the pitchesrdquo

Having identified the problem Yateley United FC now plan to arrange a digger to open up the drain and replace the crushed pipe ldquoAs a community club itrsquos great to have the support of local businesses like DCL Drains who give their time specialist knowledge and experience so willingly Desi helped us identify exactly where the drain is blocked and gave us advice which we can now act on Thanks Desirdquo said Tim Daniels part of YUFCrsquos committee

Yateley United FC own Sean Devereux Park (SDP) in Yateley where the teams play on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season The land drains were put in many years ago when was owned by the Council but plans showing the layout and run of the drains have been lost over time Rediscovering exactly where the drains run has been a big task since taking over ownership last year

We recently received a message from one of our dedicated readers asking if we could highlight a po-tentially dangerous issue for the disabled and elderly of YateleyA representative of the residents in Hanover close has come to us to help him raise awareness of a public health and safety issue that could affect many more residents in Yateley A well known crossing on Read-ing Road between The White Lion and KFC has been neglected over recent years and the results are numerous pot holes in the road The worst of this is in the centre of the road where a very deep hole makes it difficult for residents in wheelchairs or on crutches to cross safely This issue is made worse when it rains - forming large puddles that are sig-nificantly deeper than they appear Our source mentions that residents of Hanover Close using crutches or other walking aids find it difficult to cross here without getting incredibly wet feet and they are usually un-sure of what their crutches are sinking into

Risotto is a great all round dish that can be flavoured and personalised to your tastes but this saffron infused risotto is our personal favourite This exotic and tantalising dish will awaken your taste buds and keep the chill out of your bones this month while giving you variety and spice Delicate flavours of saffron and thyme combined with buttery rice and the tang of dry white wine makes this a mellow and delicious dish for any occasion Wersquove topped it with succulent vine tomatoes delicately roasted in a drizzle of oil - but this risotto is also great topped with roast chicken breasts or a tender cut of steak


Ingredients

1 tsp saffron threads100g butter1 red onion2 cloves of garlic2 cups of arborio rice150ml of dry white wineThe grated zest amp juice of 2 lemons1 tbsp thyme leaves1 litre of vegetable (or light chicken) stock14 cup of grated parmesan

Preparation

Pre-heat your oven to 180degcSoak the saffron strands in a small amount of warm waterFinely dice the red onionPeel and finely chop the garlic

Method

1 Melt the butter in a medium sized low sided pan Add the onion and garlic then gently fry until soft

2 Add the rice and mix until well coated and warmed through

3 Add the wine and stir until absorbed then add the lemon juice zest thyme and saffron

4 Place the vine tomatoes into a roasting tin drizzle with oil and roast for about 15 minutes

5 Meanwhile add a ladle of stock to the pan at a time stirring continuously Stir until absorbed before adding another ladle of stock Do this until the rice is cooked but still has some bite (usually around 20 minutes)

6 Remove the risotto from the heat stir in the parmesan and serve topped with the roasted tomatoes and some salad

1 Stay calm and try not to shake too much - Meeting your star is more daunting than you may think and you need to make a good first impres-sion

2 Be polite at all times - There is nothing worse than a badly behaved fan Always say please and thank you and never assume they will want a photo always ask

3 Plan what you want to say before you meet them - You will be tongue-tied so make sure you have a simple question that guarantees a re-sponse such as ldquoHow are you todayrdquo or ldquoHow has your week beenrdquo
