    IntroductionTheGraduatePrograminHistoryofferstheMasterofArtsandDoctorofPhilosophydegreesinhistoryaswellasminorworkfordoctoralstudentsinfieldsoutsideofhistory.StudentsarerarelyadmittedtotheHistoryGraduateProgramforaMastersdegreeonly.

    AlthoughmostofourstudentsenterasM.A.candidatesinhistory,someenterthroughjointdegreeprogramssuchastheBridgeProgramwithAfro-AmericanStudies.(Forfulldetailsontheseprograms,pleaseseeOtherDegreeOptions,p.40).

    Thedepartmenttrainsproductiveresearchers,committedteachers,andengagedpublicintellectuals.Theprogramisrigorous,combiningindependentandcollaborativeworkandemphasizingscholarlyengagementandintellectualconnectedness.Thedepartmentsstudentspursueavarietyofcareers,includingbutnotlimitedtocollegeanduniversityteaching.

    AlthoughworkisordinarilydonesimultaneouslyontheMastersdegree,thePh.D.languagerequirements,andtheminorfield,astudentmust,ataminimum,havebeenawardedaMastersdegreebeforeheorsheispermittedtobeginthepreliminaryexamination.Inallcases,theminorfieldandlanguagerequirementsmustbefinishedbeforethepreliminaryexaminationisconsideredcompleted.Withthecompletionofprelims,thestudentisformallyadmittedtocandidacyforthedoctorate.

    TheFaculty-GraduateStudentLiaisonCommitteeorganizesadvisorycommitteesofgraduatestudentstoparticipateinfacultysearches.Itiscomposedofgraduatestudentswhoareelectedannually.

    TheJointCommitteeonDiversityischargedwithmakingpolicyrecommendationstothedepartmentasawholeregardingrecruitmentandretentionofstudentsandfacultyofcolor.ItalsoworkswiththeGraduate

    StudentsinU.S.HistoryorthoseconcentratingontheU.S.intheGenderandWomensHistoryProgramwhotakethemethodologyoptioninlieuofasecondlanguagemaytakeprelimsafterhavingcompletedonlyoneofthelanguagerequirements.Thisrequirestheapprovalofthemajorprofessor.

    Inexceptionalcircumstances,studentsmaypetitiontheGraduateCounciltowaivecertaindeficienciesandtobeallowedtotakethepreliminaryexaminationwithouthavingsatisfiedalloftheserequirements.Anyrequirementswaivedbeforethepreliminaryexaminationmustbecompletedbeforethestudentmayadvancetocandidacy.
