IntroductionTheGraduatePrograminHistoryofferstheMasterofArtsandDoctorofPhilosophydegreesinhistoryaswellasminorworkfordoctoralstudentsinfieldsoutsideofhistory.StudentsarerarelyadmittedtotheHistoryGraduateProgramforaMastersdegreeonly.
AlthoughmostofourstudentsenterasM.A.candidatesinhistory,someenterthroughjointdegreeprogramssuchastheBridgeProgramwithAfro-AmericanStudies.(Forfulldetailsontheseprograms,pleaseseeOtherDegreeOptions,p.40).
Thedepartmenttrainsproductiveresearchers,committedteachers,andengagedpublicintellectuals.Theprogramisrigorous,combiningindependentandcollaborativeworkandemphasizingscholarlyengagementandintellectualconnectedness.Thedepartmentsstudentspursueavarietyofcareers,includingbutnotlimitedtocollegeanduniversityteaching.
Graduatestudentsspecializeinoneoftheprogramsofstudylistedbelow.Eachsetsitsownprogrammaticrequirements,consistentwiththeGraduateSchoolsregulationsandsubjecttotheapprovalofthefacultyasawhole.

AlthoughworkisordinarilydonesimultaneouslyontheMastersdegree,thePh.D.languagerequirements,andtheminorfield,astudentmust,ataminimum,havebeenawardedaMastersdegreebeforeheorsheispermittedtobeginthepreliminaryexamination.Inallcases,theminorfieldandlanguagerequirementsmustbefinishedbeforethepreliminaryexaminationisconsideredcompleted.Withthecompletionofprelims,thestudentisformallyadmittedtocandidacyforthedoctorate.

StudentsmustdeclaretheirintenttobeginpreparationfortheirpreliminaryexaminationwiththeGraduateProgramCoordinatoratleast30daysbeforethebeginningdateofeachportionoftheirexam.TheGraduateProgramCoordinatorrequeststhepreliminaryexaminationwarrantfromtheGraduateSchoolandcoordinatestheexamlogisticsanddefensearrangements.

MostpreliminaryexaminationstakeplaceinNovemberandApril.Inbrief,theprogramsthatfollowtheNovember/Aprilscheduleare:African,CentralAsian,ComparativeWorldHistory,LatinAmericanandCaribbean,andMiddleEastern.
ThevariousfieldsintheEuropeanprogramholdpreliminaryexaminationsinSeptember,NovemberandApril.TheSeptemberexamsareusedonlyifabsolutelynecessary(e.g.,becauseofabsencesfromMadison).
ExamsintheEastAsian,SouthAsian,SoutheastAsian,U.S.,andGenderandWomensHistoryprogramsaregivenanytimeduringtheFallandSpringSemester,exceptduringUniversityrecessperiods.

NotethatthepreliminaryexaminationplaysanimportantpartinthedeterminationofwhetherastudentmaybepermittedtoproceedtowardthePh.D.,butitisnottheonlygroundsonwhichthatdecisionismade. Thepreliminaryexaminationcommitteetakesintoaccountthestudentsentireacademicrecord,includingcoursework,theM.A.thesis,andanyotherrelevantinformation,suchasperformanceasaTA.TheDepartmentreservestherighttodropa studentfromtheprogramifhisorherrecordisjudgeddeficientoverall,evenifthestudenthaspassedthepreliminaryexamination.(Inpractice,however,thishasnotoccurred).

RetakingPreliminaryExaminations
Ifastudentfailsthepreliminaryexaminationthefirsttime,buttherestofthestudentsrecordsowarrants,thestudentmaybepermittedtoretaketheexam.Studentswhofailasecondtimewillbeautomaticallydroppedfromtheprogram.Studentswishingtocontesteitherapreliminaryexamgradeortheiroverallexaminationmayappealfirsttotheirprelimcommittee

Theexaminationconsistsoffourparts:
1. A dissertationproposalofapproximately15to20pages.Theproposalshoulddefinethetopicandaddresstherelevanthistorical,historiographical,theoretical,andmethodologicalissues.
2. A detailedteachingsyllabusforaone-semesterintroductoryundergraduatesurvey
courseoneitherAfricato1870orAfricasince1870.3. A take-homeexaminationconsistingoffourquestions(twoonthecandidatesmainfieldandtwoongeneralAfrica).Questionswillbedistributedfourteendaysbeforethedeadline,andanswerstoeachshouldbenomorethan2,500words.
4. A two-houroralexaminationcoveringthecandidatesmainfield,thedissertationproposal,thesyllabus,andthetake-homeexamination.
