Willunga Football Club Dogs Savage Demons

Match report of 18 May

Mitch Portlock probably would have liked to celebrate his 200

th game for

Willunga FC with a different match result but it was not to be. Although he won and ran and carried the ball all day to drive Willunga forward, the Mt Compass defence was too strong. Willunga’s defence worked hard but it was no match for big Tom Pinyon who dominated the air, marked strongly, ran hard and kicked nine match winning goals.

Pinyon kicked the first goal of the match at the ten minute mark after a contested grab and then snapped another one minute later after a perfect front and centre rove. The game developed into a ten minute tussle and again it was Pinyon who rose above the standard with a good grab and long goal. Willunga attacked but could only manage behinds and then on the siren Pinyon ran fifty metres to make space, accept a short pass and goal.

The second quarter was a repeat of the pattern of play in the first period. Willunga fumbled and often looked hesitant while the Dogs worked the close in hand ball with surety and precision then kicked to position into their forward lines. The first two minutes of the quarter were Willunga’s best with goals from Groom and But-cher. Thereafter Compass settled and moved the ball with confide-ence. Theirs was a team effort while Willunga relied on a few individuals. Demon Steele and Bulldog Hoban neutralised each other in the ruck but the Corbett brothers often took the ball away from the centre square. Pinyon marked and pass-ed to Parsons who goaled and then Pinyon himself received a pass to kick his fifth for the game.

A Willunga defensive fumble allowed Camac to swoop and goal. A McKenzie mistake set up Burdett who kicked truly for the Demons. Michael Corbett and Smith, too often found ways to evade Willunga’s tackles. Their hard work set up Davis who passed to Pittway who then pin pointed Pinyon who made it six for the game and give the visitors a five goal lead at half time.

Willunga came out all fired up in the third quarter to assert them-selves, but the Dogs stole their thunder. Lahiff missed from forty metres and on the rebound Parsons took a strong chest mark and kicked a goal. Brokenshire was winning plenty of the ball but could not stop Burdett kicking a much needed major for Willunga. The ten minutes following that goal were the toughest of the match. It was a goal from Demon recruit Altus that broke the stalemate and gave Willunga hope but then Miegel went to ground with what appeared to be a knee injury. He was forced to release the ball

and Compass swooped and Pinyon scored again.

The momentum moved back to the Bulldogs despite a McGowan goal. Michael Corbett goaled after a fifty metre penalty and followed that up with a centre square break for his second on a minute.

Willunga were still in touch coming into the final quarter but still had not reduced the first term deficit. They began full of hope when Butcher was awarded fifty metres and goaled but Compass drove long and deep from the resulting ball up. Two Willunga defenders failed to spoil and Pinyon marked in the goal square.

Milburn, the Corbetts and Davis continued to win the ball and use it precisely. Another ten minute arm wrestle ensued before Willunga broke the shackles. Standfield marked and kicked accurately after a good delivery by Haskett and Portlock. He kicked another five minutes later but then Davis wove some magic in heavy traffic to snap a beauty and snuff out any chance of a Willunga win. The icing on the cake came at the 23 minute mark when Pittaway found Pinyon who kicked his ninth for the game.

Mt Compass won three of the four quarters and were the better team on the day. A well earned victory.

Willunga Football Club Roosters take the Cup

Match report of 11 May

Fortunately for Willunga the cup that Strath took home on Saturday night was the Ivan Cross Cup and not the big one. In slightly overcast and windless conditions the Roosters and Demons played with a pink ball and gave the crowd just what we all want. A competition that seesawed, for a while, then had one team in a winning position only to be beaten by the last kick of the day.

Strath always seems to have a special intensity when they come to Willunga.

The game started with Straths Cousins, Nisbett, Munn and Tucker pitted against Demons Steele, Portlock, Groom and McDonald in what must be one of the best square contests in the League. The start of play was open and clean and it only took the rooster two minutes to post the first goal of the game through Simounds. The Roosters posted a second quite quickly and then the pressure increased and scoring became difficult. Standfield had a crack and missed and Willunga finally posted a major 18 minutes into the term followed by Weckert’s retaliation but Butcher for the Demons posted a major near the end of the quarter to put the Demons in front by 6 points at the first break.

So Willunga started a bit slow, The Roosters were hot but by the end of the term the Demons had the ascendancy.

The second quarter was the reverse with Willunga coming out of the blocks very well, posting the first goal and then the Roosters overtaking them to just squeeze the margin down by a couple of points to take them to the break. Demon Miegel was on fire for most of the quarter.

Then the big break and the Demons came out and did their third quarter thing and added six goals to their opponents 2 points to grow the lead to what looked like a winner. They defended well and attacked with power while the Roosters just kept in there.

At three quarter time the Demons were 27 points up and looking pretty good. But……

The last quarter saw a Strath transition and they started with great run and kept the ball forward to maximise their scoring shots with great success. They did what the home side had done in the previous quarter and were dominant all

over the ground. As the time ticked on the Willunga supporters would have been hoping for the siren to sound as they watched their side’s margin deteriorate.

There was some tough footy going on in the last few minutes as tempers frayed and to the Roosters credit they kept the pressure on. Willunga’s players made some bad mistakes that gave their opponents advantage and they did not seem to be concentrating on keeping the ball out of the Roosters goal range.

In the dying minutes, actually seconds, an interception by the Rooster led to a long bomb into their goals with the hope that the kick had the length required but it did not. However Wayde Thorpe leapt over five opponents to take the screamer of the year on somebody’s shoulders and had the ball in his hands as the final siren sounded to give him a free right in the goal square.

The Roosters deserve the win for their tenacity and determin-ation all the way through the game.

Wow, what a season. Unpre-dictable as it should be to keep us all keen and interested in watching how thing unfold for our teams.

-------- The community at Willunga Uniting Church - The vines are turning a golden rust colour as the night creeps up on the day even earlier. As winter arrives our faith community has enjoyed a rich variety of worship exper-iences.

With focus on the birthday of the church at Pentecost, on May 19th – the uncommercial fest-ival of the Christian

calendar. There are no greeting cards, catalogues and sales pitch for this one. Following on from this there was a celebration of Reconciliation Sunday, Trinity Sunday & Sorry Day.

The Uniting Church and the Synod of South Australia is on a journey of reconciliation with Aboriginal Australians.

We believe the Trinity evokes the theme of community and relationships and that restoring human relationships is part of God’s reconciling mission in our world. This journey of reconciliation is a response to the Bible’s call to care for all people including the marginalised and vulnerable.

A special offering was collected in support of the Oonadatta Faith Community in getting a 4WD vehicle to help transport young people to leadership training and youth ministry events.

Oonadatta is a faith community with the furthest distance from Adelaide, over 1,000 kilometres.
