Tour Down Under

2014

Yes it is on again in January 2014 with the Stage 5 start in McLaren Vale and the finish at the top of Old Willunga Hill on Saturday 25 January. Tour Down Under organisers have been spotted out and about doing early rounds of the course and assessment of facilities needed to manage the event. More can be found at: www.tourdownunder.com.au/

------- 175 Billy Cart Race

This event is planned as part of Hit the Hill in September 2014 featuring the symbolic Old Willunga Hill.

The plan is to incorporate two activities – bike time trials up the hill, building on the “Tour Down Under” promotion of the hill and reviving the Apex Club billy cart races down the Main Street – a combination of the recent and the past focus on the hill.

The hill climb will provide a lot of bike riders, of all abilities and ages to test themselves against the hill and the billy cart races should bring back memories and provide a lot of fun for everyone.

Organics Pays

Local grape grower, John Saunders, is ecstatic: more so than usual.

John's Whitefeather Red (producer 11174A USDA) has achieved the highly desirable US Dept of Agriculture certification through Australian Certified Organic (ACO) for, not only, wine grapes (Cabernet Savignon and Shiraz), but also his fruit trees, herbs, nuts, olives and vegetables.

USDA Certification means John fulfills the requirements of the National Organic Program (NOP) on his property. It also means he can label and market his wines and produce with the internationally recognised USDA logo.

John says going organic was the best things he ever did. He is also proud that school kids come to the property to learn about organics including worm farming and compost tea making.

For John, a greenie from way back, the main benefits of being certified organic at this high level are his grapes will continue to be in high demand and he'll continue to get higher prices than non-

organic grapes in the region.

Congratulations John. Well done Whitefeather Red.

Willunga Football Club Demons Outscramble Magpies

Willunga beat Goolwa-Pt Elliot in a hard fought match on a muddy oval with a strong cross wind blowing in the first half. The Magpies came into the game with a star studded line up and the knowledge that a win kept their final five aspirations alive. They began the game well and looked the better side.

Their running game and ability to find the leading players ensured they looked more dangerous than Willunga in the first quarter. Callum Wilson kicked the only goal for the quarter after solid work from Godwin-Knott and Lees.

Haskett, Glass and Burdett found plenty of the ball for Willunga and used it well but only points resulted. Soccering the

ball forward often proved the best way to clear it into the open, free of the continuous packs.

McGowan kicked Willunga’s first goal at the five minute mark of the second quarter. Groom, Lahiff, Haskett and Burdett teamed to set up the opportunity. Glass and Lahiff put the ball into space for Wakefield who kicked a long running goal. He then twice ran to the opposition goal square to carry the ball over for points to Goolwa-Pt Elliot.

Smith looked dangerous at times for the Magpies until Cox moved onto him, nullified his presence and ran off him to rebound for Willunga. Campbell and McKinlay were in everything for the Magpies – at the bottom of the packs and running forward and contesting hard in the one-on-ones. Brown snapped a beauty over his head from the middle of a pack and two minutes later the effervescent Baxter kicked a neat goal after clever work by Wakefield and Lahiff. Smith had a chance to get one back for Goolwa-Pt Elliot but his kick drifted off line. Sherry, Burdett and Altus all had chances for Willunga but the very strong wind made accurate kicking difficult.

Willunga led four goals to one when the second half commenced. The Magpies came out hard. Their season was on the

line. They bottled Willunga up for five minutes before Lees broke free to kick a hard goal. A strong contested mark by Cox in the Magpies defensive goal square stopped two in a row and in fact resulted in a Renney goal after the Demons carried the ball the length of the field. Brown, Portlock and Lahiff all had chances to create match winning leads but their shots missed. Callum Wilson and Robertson were good for the Magpies. Wilson capped off a strong quarter with a goal.

Goolwa- Pt Elliot gave it their best

shot in the last quarter. Daniel in ruck reclaimed the initiative from Collier. They drove the ball forward where Kelly won a free within a minute of the start play. He kicked truly from a tight angle. Lahiff who had played well at both ends of the ground all day drove the ball forward to Baxter who gave to Altus who restored Willunga’s three quarter time lead.

The next seven or eight minutes were all Magpies. Jurek kicked a goal from one of the many congested packs. From the resulting centre bounce Daniel set up Campbell who gave top Callum Wilson and onto Lees who kicked accurately.

The game was alive. Goolwa-Pt Elliot had the momentum and the motivation. Lees, Campbell and McKinlay gave everything but Willunga steadied. Burdett lifted a notch, ran to space and used his skills and spotted up the high marking Butcher to steady the Demons. Alexopoulos, who had been solid all day across half back, intercepted and rebounded with class. Campbell, Jurek and Campbell Wilson combined to retaliate but Wilsons long kick was touched. Willunga ran from defence. Sherry twice found the ball but couldn’t convert. Portlock could however after Haskett and Burdett delivered the ball forward with precision.

The Magpies were sunk and the Demons had tasted a close one.

Willunga Environment Centre Hello Everybody, Recently, Onkaparinga council changed its battery policy and will no longer accept ordinary alkaline batteries (still accepting lithium, disc and rechargeable batteries). This was due to the high expense of recycling them to the detriment of other programs we have come to rely on. I am looking into this further to see what we can do at the WEC, but in the meantime, BATTERY WORLD will take up to a kilo per household. They are located at 6 Bains Road, Morphett Vale.

Drop all other batteries into the WEC, and remember we also recycle clean aluminium foil, fluoro globes and mobile phones. We also now have a share box where you can drop off your reasonably current environmental and garden magazines and take home some others. Drop in and see us! Kind Regards Janine Find us on Facebook as Willunga Envir-onment Centre

------- A couple of friends were eating at a Chinese restaurant.

When an elderly waiter set chopsticks down for them, one gal made a point of reaching into her purse and pulling out her own pair. "As an environmentalist," she declared, "I do not approve of destroying bamboo forests for throwaway utensils."

The waiter inspected her chopsticks.

"Very beautiful," he said politely. "Ivory." -------

His wife packed his bags and said "GET OUT!!!". As he walked out the front door, she screamed, "I wish you a slow and painful death, you bastard!" "Oh," he replied, "so now you want me to stay!"

Variety Club Bash

praises Willunga

400 people filled the Festival Hall on Sat 17th August to celebrate the windup of the 2013 Variety Bash run. Willunga Charter helped move the participants and their entourage from McLaren Vale lodgings to a well decorated Hall.

Todd Steele took on the challenge of providing 3 course dinner and the football club ran the bar and provided other volunteers.

The Cinemallunga boys helped with set up while the Demons club helped with décor setup.

Feedback from the Bash organisers was glowing and they were impressed with the cooperation and spirit of the Willunga community and clubs.
