Almond Blossom comes to town With the local CFS leading the way, the Almond Blossom Parade came to town last Sunday. The leaders were followed by walkers from numerous Willunga community groups, vintage cars, almond pickers and historic vehicles such as Chook’s Little Winery Tours Bus.
The festivities on Saturday and Sunday at the annual Willunga Recreation Park fundraiser could be heard throughout Willunga. Saturday’s fireworks were loud and spectacular. Don’t forget the Ball this Saturday tickets at the Alma.

ENTRY NOW OPEN FOR WILLUNGA 100 WINES HIT THE HILL – Willunga175
Have you watched in awe as the Santos Tour Down Under cyclists power up the world-famous Old Willunga Hill? Willunga 100 Wines Hit the Hill is the premier event of the Willunga175 celebrations and will allow cyclists of all standards to test their own hill-climbing skills. You will have the opportunity to challenge yourself in a hill-climb time trial and to compete for the inaugural ‘Hit the Hill’ crown. This exciting event will be held on Sunday 7 September, and entry is now open.
Take the uphill challenge Old Willunga Hill Road will be closed for the duration of the time trials, so you can ride in safety. The 3.2 km bike hill climb will begin at 9 am in front of the Old Bush Inn on High Street, featuring a starting gate based on that used in the Tour de France and finishing under the Santos Tour Down Under "King of the Mountain" arch, at the top of the hill, approximately 50 metres before the turn-off onto Range Road. Everyone who reaches the finish line will be awarded a certificate of achievement. We will also crown a ‘Hit the Hill’ hero for each of the various age groups.

Ride a Soapbox down High Street
Those who prefer something less physically challenging can register to compete in a revival of the historic soapbox derby on Willunga's High Street. Derby organisers from the Willunga Business and Tourism Association and former members of the Willunga Apex Club will supply the soapboxes, built to original specifications, so that no one rider has an advantage over others. Only people aged 14 years or older may take part due to insurance restrictions. If you are interested in participating, monitor the Willunga175 website where details of how you can be involved will be announced soon.
Wind down and relax Wine and food will be available along the High Street, so all participants and spectators can relax and enjoy a day of fun and achievement.

Despite the inclement weather contractors have completed the slate roof in time for the Festival. It looks a treat.
The local original slate which, was quite soft, lasted 124 years. The New Slate used from the ‘Bangor’ region of Wales is very hard and will last many lifetimes.
The Rec Park has saved many of the original handmade nails and Oregon batons which will be kept for the future artistic projects. (Happy to receive ideas).
The old slate was so brittle that only about 20 survived the lift off process and a handful thicker pieces that could be re-used.

Cinemallunga News – Pythons, Pigs and Pirouettes
Our local community cinema, Cinemallunga, is enjoying a terrific season of movies with the recent sellout showing of 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. Audiences dressed as knights, kings, peasants and princesses, and were treated to a mass male choir singing all the Python classics as a prelude to the main movie.
More fun may be expected at the next event with two movies showing on Saturday August 23rd. The G rated classic 'Babe' is on at 2pm and is a delightful tale of a talking pig, suitable for all ages. Music, fun and food can be expected with dress-ups encouraged.
Big hair and sequins will hopefully be in abundance from 7pm with 'Strictly Ballroom' gracing the screen. As usual, patrons can enjoy music and fun, a licensed bar, hot food, prizes and a little optional dancing.
Cinemallunga is based in Willunga's Show Hall. Tickets are on sale from August 2nd at Aldinga Beach Newsagency, Yummy Nuts McLaren

A vote of thanks was given to retiring treasurer Larry McCauley by Chair D.Greenslade. Larry had given wonderful service to the WBTA over a number of years. Sue Caporn-March was presented with a framed memento of Willunga’s success in the 2013 Best Dressed Town Award and also a vote of thanks for the work she has done for the Willunga section of the Tour Down Under.

The Washpool
On June 15, celebrating World Environment Day & World Oceans’ Day, there was a tour of the Aldinga Washpool, hosted by Willunga Environment Centre, Friends of Willunga Basin and representatives of the Kaurna People.
The Washpool Lagoon, located south of Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park, is one of the last remaining coastal lagoons of its type along the metropolitan Adelaide coastline. Part of the Tjilbruke Dreaming Track, the lagoon is home to many species of water birds and supports several conservation status plant species.
As a follow up to this, Chas Martin has set up a display on the Washpool, at the Willunga Environment Centre, 18 High Street, Willunga.
If you are in the area or passing by, drop in and have a look at the interesting material he has on display from past newspaper articles to recent, and some quite beautiful, photographs of the area. A further visit to the Washpool is planned for Spring and a notice will be sent out beforehand as usual.

Football We have actually strung two in a row and looked good on Sunday for our Heritage Match.
The Past Players Group that attended were very proud of our guys.
The young guys were great and Brock Murray played his first “A” grade game and snagged a goal. That’s seven youngsters blooded into the “A”s this season.
Gerry Loots Demons Claw Back Eagles
What a great match on Sunday at Willunga when two teams on equal points battled out for a spot closer to a finals berth and the hope that they will play more than 18 games this season.
On a bright and windless Willunga Oval the home side started off rough but got their game going in plenty of time to take home the points in the Sunday Heritage Game. The Demons have had some good starts this season, only to be overrun later in the game, but the tide was turned last week when the first quarter deficit was cancelled
before half time and Willunga went on with the job.
McLaren opened smartly and it took a while for the first major score to be posted. Eagles Mutton and Ellis were in the play from the start and were influential for the entire game. The defenders from both sides played strong possession footy and kept their respective teams driving forward and it was great elusive play from the Eagles to get the ball in the right spot to gain the ascendancy for a two goal lead at the first break.
The Demons reconsidered their tactics and after the break they started to look dominant. Ex Eagle and now Demon Altus was under immense pressure from his opponents but managed to work it through and dominated. His team mate Lahiff was also tormented by the opposition but kept at it and managed to elude his opponents.
McLaren had a task in front of them but by half time the Demons had answered the challenge and the score was only two points in favour of the visitors. The lead was not to last much longer. Michael Balas made some great opportunities for the Demons while Laffin and Loots did what they could to make sure their team stayed ahead but it was not long into the third term that the Demons overtook the visitors. The goal that created the lead was celebrated by the Demons and they were spurred on. The Eagles kept their heads but the margin had crept to 22 points at the final break. The Demons had overcome their third quarter jitters.
The final term was not pretty for the visitors. Fenoughty and McEvoy kept the attack up to the home side. Some of the Eagles seemed to drop their heads. On the other side the Demons were not

going to stop. Whoever won this match was going to at least get fifth spot on the ladder and keep their hopes alive for the finals. Willunga’s stalwarts in Glass, McGowan and Standfield seemed to be all over the ground.
The final margin was 46 points in favour of the Demons and after the siren the Eagles gathered together on the ground and must have pondered about what had happened while the Demons went into the rooms to sing a song which has not been heard much this season.

WILLUNGA 175 ~ SCHOOL CELEBRATION
Willunga Primary school will be celebrating this very special anniversary in Term 3, on Friday 19 September 2014. Every class will be making their
way to the Courthouse grounds via a number of historical routes and stops, where we will then hold some whole-school activities.
We would love the students to get into the spirit of the day by adding some appropriate clothing to make this whole-school day feel a little bit special. These are often the memories that students will recall many years after they have left primary school, and joining in is a great way to feel connected.
We do not require Oscar winning costumes or large amounts of money spent. It can be as simple as one item worn over their usual school clothes or you can add more items if you wish. You may have one of these items already, or you can buy (possibly from an op shop), or even sew something very basic.
We would love parents/ caregivers to join us on the day and you are most welcome to dress up as well!

Expressway duplication community day – Premier announced opening end of July 2014.
Australian Local Government Association – I attended the National General Assembly from Sunday 15 June to 18 Wednesday June inclusive. It was an opportunity to hear about Local Government across Australia and talk with Federal Government representatives.
New approval to conduct limited aircraft maintenance at Aldinga Airfield given to Aldinga Aircraft Maintenance Pty Ltd (for approximately 5 aircraft per week not housed at the airfield).

Annual Business Plan for 2014-15 – Council budget has been out for comment plus we held our required public meeting. We received 28 submissions and had seven residents at the public meeting. The budget was finalisd by Council on 1 July 2014.
There were a few items proposed during consultation that were cut from the budget to achieve a rate increase of 4.45%. One is to no longer provide the mobile library.
Moana Flood Mitigation project has resolved to continue managing flood risk with ‘non-structural’ mitigation strategies. The result is based on a study by KBR and available from Council.
This month we will be launching a new social event called ‘Decant’ at the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre. Decant will be a regular event offering people the opportunity to taste and purchase some of our region’s best wine and beer in a fun, social setting. It will be held on the last Friday of every month from 5-8pm starting 25 July. At each potluck meal we introduce an individual or family that’s new to the Willunga community. We then circle up and share our wants (that might be solved at the community level) and the resources we have individually to offer. CHURCH NOTICES Willunga Uniting Church - August Community News - Jenny Escots
Spring awakening and the gifts of the seasons.
The season of spring is about renewal, which is something to look forward to through a long, cold, and wet winter.
Willunga Waldorf School students are currently channeling their
anticipation for Spring into creative art, which will celebrate themes of environment, community, interconnectedness and new life.
Willunga Uniting Church is joining the students in this community project, seeking ways to dialogue common values through creative expression.
Every September, Willunga Uniting Church makes its gallery space available to local schools interested in displaying student art. This year, an exhibition of artwork by students from Willunga Waldorf School will be displayed in Bethany Hall and throughout the church building from Friday 5 September. This collaborative exhibition is entitled 'Gifts of the Seasons'.
Waldorf students of all ages will be involved in the exhibition, with some older, high school-aged students focusing particularly on creating work relating to the Psalms of the bible. Through this focus, students have

engaged in conversations about environmental stewardship, social responsibility, environmental and social sustainability, and questions around how to make the world a more compassionate place.
Rebecca Hicks, art teacher at the Waldorf school relates “Our curriculum strives to awaken social responsibility and service to the community and much of what we do as a matter of course seems to comfortably align with the messages within Psalms 104 and 138,”
The exhibition will not be the only community event happening at Willunga Uniting Church in September.
On Saturday, 6th of September, the day following the launch of the art exhibition, the Willunga congregation will hold their Annual Spring Fair. A variety of food and craft stalls, bric-a-brac, plant sales, games, activities and much more will form part of the event. Willunga Waldorf School students will also participate in this event, performing their own music compositions on the day.
The weekend will be a
celebration of the spirit of creativity, community and the gifts of the seasons.
The Willunga Waldorf School art exhibition will be launched at 6pm on Friday 5 September in Bethany Hall, adjacent to the Willunga Uniting Church building.
The exhibition will be open to the public each Saturday in September from 9am to 12 midday.
The Willunga Uniting Church Annual Spring Fair will be held on Saturday 6 September from 10am to 3pm in Bell Paddock (corner of St Andrews Terrace and St Judes Street), adjacent to Willunga Uniting Church.

The SV Schools Ministry Support committee will hold a Sunday Concert at the McLaren Vale Lutheran Church on Sunday August 17th at 2.00 pm. Tickets $10 (Families $20) can be obtained from the participating churches or at the door.
