Elite cyclist, Stuart O'Grady, will be riding in our bike time trial up Old Willunga Hill on Sunday 7 September.

Help out on the day!!

As you would be aware on Sunday 7th September Willunga175 is staging the Hit the Hill event. This event entails the bicycle time trails up Old Willunga Hill with the billycart races being revived on High Street. The planning and preparations for this event are well underway and we are seeking assistance with the setting up and the running of the event. We are seeking support for several tasks both before the event and on the day. If you can assist us please let Graham know on 0402 892 425.

Rec Park News The Old Police station re-painting has finished and agents Raine & Horne are receiving expressions of interest for Lease.

The Strategic Plan for the Rec Plan has been received and the steering committee will be progressing the plan in the coming months

Volunteer Service Celebrated by Jan Washington

Meals on Wheels Willunga Branch's team of past and present volunteers celebrated 40 years of service to the local community on Wednesday August 13th.

A light luncheon, excellently catered for by Senior Students and Home Ec Staff of Willunga High, was enjoyed by 70 guests.

Willunga is a small branch in regard to number of clients but what we lack in clients we make up for in dedicated volunteers who deliver a 3 course meal, prepared by kitchen staff at McLaren Vale Hospital, five days a week.

Our birthday celebrations were a fitting thanks to each and every volunteer who have given their time and effort to our branch.

We still have two volunteers who began 40 years ago - Beverley Egel and Rhonda Forman. Congratulations to you both.

Cinemallunga News – Love was in the Air

A big audience turned out for a night of fun, fashion and fancy moves as Cinemallunga showed 'Strictly Ballroom' on August 23rd. With judges welcoming audience members at the ticket box and commenting favourably on the fashions of the night, it was set to be a night of laughs. Earlier in the afternoon a group of keen amateurs learned some dance moves, which they performed as part of the intermission entertainment. Couples also were able to parade down the aisle and swish across the stage to the sounds of the classic movie song 'Love is in the Air'. Cinemallunga's next show is part of the Every Generation Festival with an October 18th showing of the classic 'Sound of Music'. With two sessions planned – 1pm and 6:30, and ticket prices at only $5, it's sure to sell well. So dust of the nun's habits, tune up your best yodel, grab Granny or the Grand

Dear Tom My friend June was one of the ballroom dancers who thoroughly enjoyed last Saturday night at the movies with Strictly Ballroom.

June was part of Nancy’s dancing group of professional ballroom dancers. Her team loved the evening dancing and swinging their hips while teaching “students” new dance steps.

We’ll be back she said as it was such a friendly atmosphere with lot’s of laughing and dancing!

On June 15, celebrating The members of Sisters of

Abundance Choir would like to thank Willunga for their Almond Blossom Festival this year. The atmosphere was great. It was a pleasure for us to come along and sing for the community at the fair.

We showcased some of our new songs on the day and what a wonderful day it was. The sun shone and everyone was in a good mood.

Featured songs included “Shine” from the film Billy Elliott. “Africa” by Toto with its great drum beat. “Bring Me Little Water Sylvie” in unaccompanied four part harmony made this old field holler from the southern States of America stand out. The disco hit “I will Survive” got toes tapping. The Celtic tune Riversong- a Celtic Celebration gave a touch of the Irish to the occasion.

Sisters of Abundance are in their 9th year of singing together. We are a community choir and always welcome ladies who would like to sing with us. Ladies if you can hold a tune and would like to join us please come along. Experience is not necessary – half the choir can’t read music so you wouldn’t be alone. It is great fun and gives us all some time out from family one night a week. We rehearse at Tatachilla Lutheran College each Monday evening.

We enjoy singing for our community and have sung at many local community events over the years. We will be singing at the Relay for Life at McLaren Vale on 11th October.

The coming weeks are looking very busy as we are now rehearsing for our 2014 concert “Sisters in Concert” on Sunday 28th

September in the McLaren Vale hall. We will again be supporting the community by donating part proceeds from our concert to a charity. We hope you can all come along and enjoy the show.

Lykkebo Gardens Open On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September Lykkebo Garden on Ryan Road, Sellicks Hill (follow signs) will participate in the Open Gardens Australia. Proceeds from gate takings and refreshments will be donated to Rob van Driel’s, Daddy’s Little Legend Neonatal Appeal to raise funds for a Retcam machine to help the Flinders Medical Centre Neonatal Unit care for nearly 1,300 premature and critically ill babies every year. Lykkebo Garden is on 2.2 hectares of land that was part of a large parcel of land planted with almond trees in 1967. Chellaston and Johnston were the varieties planted and most of the original trees remain and are still producing.

The Jensen family received the land title in August 1985 and immediately removed a few almond trees to plant fruit trees. Planting three trees in one hole was fashionable. There was a lovely nursery down at Yankalilla where we purchased, 9 apple varieties, 3 pears, 9 plums, 3 peaches, and 3 apricots. Multiple plantings of fruit trees in one hole is no longer recommended. Only one stand of three apple trees remains. The first plantings of apricots and peaches have completely expired and

only two individual plum trees remain.

Subsequent nut tree plantings have included macadamia, pecan, and pistachio. This year three walnut trees have been planted. Last year we increased the varieties of citrus and replaced several stone fruits. Four fruit trees have been successfully relocated.

The taste of home grown seasonal fruit and vegetables is indelibly recorded in our memories and the first bite of freshly picked new season pome, stone or citrus fruits and vegetables give immeasurable pleasure.

In November last year Karl Jensen, (son of owners) frustrated by a weed ridden unused wind house, formerly used for potted bulbs, decided to convert the space into a new vegie patch. This was accomplished when the Messenger Community News, advertised the Best Vegie Patch Competition, Karl entered and on 19 February this year Karl was informed that he had won.

Michelle sees Brian walking past and says how lovely to see you.

Michelle’s dulcet tones soon work and the cat emerges.

Off to the Vets for a id scan..no luck but the lovely staff locate a possible owner from lost cat notice.

After 10 days the soon to be named Ali cat was saved from that karma and was reunited with her Willunga owner.

Willunga Christmas Tree Festival 2014

Past, Present, Future: November 29th – December 4th

GAS, TENANTS & LANDLORDS SHARE RESPONSIBILITY You can’t see it or smell it but, if you’re a tenant or a

landlord, you’re equally responsible for it. That’s the reality when it comes to gas and appliances in rental properties, according to First National Real Estate Nick van Vliet principal, Nick van Vliet.

‘Even though spring is almost here, no tenant or landlord should be lulled into a false sense of security’ Nick van Vliet said.

‘Gas safety is a shared responsibility and while we may soon be reducing the use of our gas heaters, there are other appliances that we use throughout the year including gas ovens, cooktops and hot water systems that need diligent consideration.

Although state legislation may vary, in principle, landlords should ensure the safety and good repair of all gas and electrical appliances in their rental properties, nationally. Unsafe appliances can kill or seriously harm tenants and their guests, putting landlords’ as well as neighbouring properties at risk.

‘Managing agents should make sure they arrange periodic appliance checks, using qualified inspectors, in all managed rental properties. They should also educate their landlords regarding their legal obligations’ Nick van Vliet said.

‘Equally, tenants are obliged to use appliances in accordance with instructions and report any faults or suspected faults to their landlord or managing agent immediately’.

Because it is impossible to see or smell any leaking vapour, Nick van Vliet recommends all gas appliances including heaters, hot water systems

and cook tops be serviced or checked by a qualified technician, every one to two years.

‘The safety of our tenants is of utmost importance to First National Real Estate Nick van Vliet. Because faulty appliances can produce lethal carbon monoxide, we need to remind our tenants, landlords and managing agents of this vitally important shared responsibility’ Nick van Vliet said.

Regional awards take on fresh new look The Fleurieu Food Fiesta! Olive awards are back for a second decade with a fresh format. Briony Liebich, an experienced sensory analyst, with over 10 years of professional tasting experience under her belt, takes over the reigns of Chief Judge from awards stalwart Zannie Flanagan. “The Fiesta! Olive Awards have been paramount in developing the reputation of Fleurieu Peninsula as a premium Australian region for olive and oil production,” reflected Zannie who designed the awards 11 years ago.

The categories have been simplified this year to reflect industry trends and the judging system will use the 100 point system, reflecting national industry standards. Entry criteria has changed to allow entries grown, processed or with a cellar door in the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island. “This will strengthen regional ties and help define the regional styles” says Briony.

To further promote the producers involved, entries may feature in public tastings, in special menus and sensory

workshops to highlight the characteristics of quality oils and olives. One such event is the Punter’s Pick where consumers get the chance to vote for their favorites of the top scoring olive oils at the Willunga and Victor Harbor Farmers Markets.

“This year it will be very special Awards dinner as we pay tribute to Vince Scarfo and his brother in law, Luigi Palombo who were tragically lost at sea in February” says Rachel McMillan, Chief Steward of the Awards.

“Vince and Lui were highly respected in the Fleurieu Food & Wine Industry. Vince was a great supporter of the Fiesta! Olive Awards and we mark his contribution to the region by naming the Best of Show Oil, the Vince Scarfo Trophy. He was an inspiration, mentor, support and friend to many.”

Football by Gerry Loots What a great game for us. Willunga came out of the blocks, kept the pressure on all day and coasted home like Usain Bolt. The crowd included the 2004 “A” and “B” grade premiership players who contributed a faiR amount of noise and spurred the boys on. On the other hand Strath looked a bit flat and probably came with the two points up on their virtual Premiership table – but it was not to be. This Saturday is going to be a buster of a game when the Demons meet Encounter Bay on a nice big ground.

Willunga Upset Roosters Willunga won the toss and kicked with a slight breeze. Sherry kicked the first goal of the game after being awarded a fifty metre penalty. Willunga were

never fronted from that time. Standfield set up another opportunity for Sherry but he missed. Tucker and Hall combined to open Strathalbyn’s scoring. Sherry and Lahiff kicked 3 more points for the Demons. Lahiff kicked a goal but George got it back immediately. Burdett and Altus were in everything for Willunga and set up forward moves but Groom and Collier failed to convert. The Roosters opened the second quarter with a composed goal by M Elliot from the forward pocket boundary line. A minute later he missed another opportunity and on the rebound Burdett spotted up Groom who kicked long and true. Groom then linked with Haskett to move the ball quickly into the Demons forward lines where Lahiff led to space, marked and kicked a fine goal from fifty metres out. George got a major to steady the ship for Strathalbyn.

Burns and James missed opportunities but Munn took a strong mark and kicked a fifty metre goal. Murray then linked with McGowan to set up Butcher’s first goal since coming back from injury. Tucker forced the ball forward for the Roosters and Cousins kicked a steadying goal. Butcher followed his man forward and took a strong defensive mark, then in the play of the day, kicked long to the far side where he pinpointed Burdett who hand balled long ot the fast running defender, Alexopoulos. He ran to fifty and kicked a long sliding goal to bring the crowd to life. Vaninetti and George battled hard for the Roosters and held up Willunga’s momentum in the minutes leading up to half time. Vaninetti and Weckert produced excellent run from defence to thwart Willunga’s forward moves at the start of the second half. Altus’s run set up a Lahiff goal to kick the Demons further ahead and then Cousins was at the end of good play from Tucker and Marton. He kicked another major a minute later. Willunga rose to the challenge when Fry found Butcher who converted. Sherry kicked a back-to-back goal to increase Willunga’s lead then Balas’ skills and pace and Fry’s courage set up a Lahiff goal. Willunga’s momentum went up a notch when McGowan’s magnificent effort created space for Burdett. He drove the ball down the ground where Willunga’s forward line pressure forced a Strathalbyn mistake and Altus ran into an open goal. Standfield drove the ball forward on the siren. Lahiff was interfered with. He was

awarded a free and kicked truly. The last quarter saw Willunga assert their dominance in a dour struggle. The ball was slippery and players tiring so packs formed. Tackles were ferocious. Strathalbyn were allowed no space to use their class. On the other hand Willunga withstood the pressure, broke free and kicked truly. Sherry converted the first opportunity after strong ruck work by Collier. McGowan’s strength was a telling factor in allowing players like Altus and Burdett to run free. Standfield produced the best individual goal of the day when he roved his own ruckwork, broke a tackle, ran to forty metres and kicked long and straight. The Rooster’s best chance of a last quarter goal was thwarted when Batson’s long kick hit the post. The last gaol came from a left foot snap from Renney who played on from a Sherry free kick. Willunga’s ten goal winning margin shook Strathalbyn, the League leaders and enhanced the Demons chance of a final

five berth.Demons Bog Mudlarks Visibility was a bit better for the Mudlarks on Saturday at Willunga Oval, on a bright day with a zephyr wafting from the West. Willunga won the toss and elected to kick to the South. Although the Muddies started off well the Demons soon found composure and totally dominated the second term to put them in a position to take the game and keep their finals hopes intact. Wendelborn, Hodgins, Carrol and Paterson

started in the centre for the Muddies and made an early statement but by the end of the first term the centre square line up for the Demons was starting to gain ascendancy with Huizink, Groom, Burdett and Groom finding players up forward and playing very hard ball. For the first ten minutes the game was an arm wrestle with the ball going between half forward lines with some great tenacious displays of defence by both teams. It took 12 minutes before the visitors posted the first goal for the game when Hill kicked from 30 metres out. Poor checking by the Demons resulted in a second goal to their opposition when Wendelborn drilled a six pointer. Finally Alexopoulos managed to get a well contested ball out to Groom who fed Lahiff for the Demons first goal. The Muddies led by 8 points at the first break. But the second term was a lot different. Murray passed brilliantly to Lahiff to convert and then nearly immediately replayed the passage for all to see again. Those two passages of play seemed to spur on the home side. The visitors did not score a goal in the second term and the Demons managed four so were ahead at half time. At the start of the second half, Williams and Ogilvie were trying to give their Myponga Sellicks team mates opportunities but the Demons were thwarting and disturbed the flow many times, forcing many errors. Even though the visitors had more shots at the posts, they were inaccurate and allowed the Demons to grow their lead a little.

Wakefield and Fry were firing well by this time and kept the pressure on the Muddies by contesting strongly and breaking through packs. Mudlark Hassan could not stem the tide for all his effort. The final term was a great battle and Demon recruit Fry responded to the pressure and took an all comers. The visitors fought back well and kept the competition close. The ground was heavy and taking its toll on the fitness levels. The close in contests and skills continued to provide the crowd plenty of spectacles. With the result putting Willunga fifth by one game and Myponga Sellicks at 8th on the ladder, clearly both sides have a tough run home and need to stay focused.

Wed 3rd September. ‘Adelaide Botanic Gardens: First Creek Wetlands’. This 2.6 hectare wetland features many rare and threatened local species. Guest speaker is Dan Duval, Seed Collector at the Seed Conservation Centre of the Botanic Gardens. Dan collected seed for the Wetlands from swamps both locally and in the South East of SA resulting in a unique planting of rare species in the heart of Adelaide.

FLEURIEU IS A-BUZZ WITH NEW RADIO TRIPLE Z Excitement is in the air as the Fleurieu Peninsula's newest Community Radio station Triple Z takes shape. Their first major fundraiser is in the Mount Compass War Memorial Hall Saturday 20th September. This hall is the same proud venue that hosts the monthly Supper Club and this event will be a cracker. It's famous for its excellent musicians and warm environment.

Circle of Friends by John Bennett

Through donations from the Saturday morning shoe shine the Willunga Circle of Friends have been able to sponsor a team of ten Afghani refugees on Bridging visas, to join the South Australian Futsal League indoor soccer competition. Refugees on Bridging visas have had security and health clearances but have no work rights they are permitted to live in the Community while their applications for protection are being processed. Needless to say this is an anxious time for any refugee and participation in sport is a means of reducing mental stress. The Circle of Friends thank patrons for their generous support that has allowed us to sponsor a team in the Futsal competition.
