From the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome back to Term 4 everybody! We have had a great start to the term and I

am looking forward to all that we will accomplish together before the end of

2019.

Japan Trip

We currently have a group of 14 students and 3 staff in Japan on

our biannual school trip. I would like to congratulate our won-

derful staff, Mrs Lyndell Allen, Mrs Karen George and Mr Daniel

Paxton who made changes to the itinerary to ensure that our

students were safe, secure and away from Typhoon Hagibis. The

group have been in regular contact with the school and with the families of the

children involved to ensure that parents were informed and reassured of the

group’s safety and wellbeing. We look forward to the group’s return later this

week and cannot wait to hear more about their adventures and their

learning.

No Classes- Professional Learning and Report Writing – Wednesday

6th November

Please note that students will not be required at school on Wednesday 6th No-

vember, as teachers will be writing reports and undergoing some professional

learning.

Sports - State Championships

Congratulations and best wishes to Thomas, Cooper, William, Seth and Caden,

our 11-year-old Boys Relay Team, who will be representing our school at the up-

coming State Athletics Championships. What an achievement!

Parent Connections

The 2019 Grade 6 PYP Exhibition will be taking place on Wednesday 23rd October

from 6.00-7.30pm. Our students will be displaying their inquiries into the central

idea that ‘Resolving Conflict Depends on Actions and Reactions’. Thank you to

We are looking forward to our multi age Maths morning on Tuesday 5 November from 9-11am. Our students

will be participating in a range of Maths activities designed to engage and challenge their thinking. Parents

and carers are most welcome to come along.

The school Lapathon and Twilight Market, a school fundraiser, will be happening on Friday 22nd November.

This is a very exciting day for our students. Parents are most welcome to come along to the Lapathon and we

would love to see you all at our Twilight Market. We hope that the weather will be kind to us!

Many thanks to the parents and carers who came along to our Learning Conferences at

the end of Term 3. Strong partnerships between home and school are vital to successful

learning, and we appreciate your support.

Uniform and Hats for Term 4

We really appreciate the support that parents are providing by ensuring that children are

in uniform. Please remember that we are a Sun Smart school and so staff and students

are expected to wear their hats outside in Term 4.

Classes for 2020

The time is rapidly approaching when teachers will commence the task of creating classes for

2020. If your family will not be with us next year, please inform the office so that we can con-

sider this within our plans. The formation of classes is quite a lengthy process, as we consider

the allocation of each child very carefully. As part of this process, the students will identify

some children with whom they would like to be placed next year. Parents may forward any

information that is relevant to their child’s placement in 2020 to me in writing by Monday 4th November

and this will be taken into consideration.

Transition 2020

Our Foundation students for 2020 will soon be with us for their first transition session.

Many thanks to Mrs Joy Hill and Mrs Heather Delahunty, and the staff involved, for all

the work that they have done to organise the Transition program. Heather and Joy

have visited the children at kindergarten to learn more about each child and the ways

by which we can support them as they make the transition to UPPS. In 2020, Mrs Joy Hill and Ms Danielle

Bond will be our Foundation teachers. Danielle has experience teaching in the early years of schooling and is

very excited about teaching our Foundation students. She has been very busy familiarising herself with our

Foundation Program. I would like to thank Heather for her fantastic contribution as a Foundation teacher

over the last few years. Heather will remain teaching at our school and is seeking professional growth and

development through a change to her role in 2020. Families will be informed of staffing arrangements for

2020 as soon as details have been finalised.

Dates for your Diary

Term 4 is already shaping up as a very busy time, with lots of exciting events on our calendar. Please find

some important dates below so that you can begin planning. Please be aware that events or dates may be

changed if required. These dates were accurate at the time of publication of this newsletter.

Best wishes,

Janet Hillgrove

JUNIOR UNIT Welcome back to Term 4! In Foundation, we have had a great start to the term, reading lots of fairy tales. The

children are making story boards looking at the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of stories. We are

looking at the characters and how they interact. Thankyou to those who have returned swimming permission

notes. These are due back on Oct 18.

This term has begun with Cinquain poetry for the Grade 1s. It’s great to see some students writing poems at

home, building on the colour, acrostic, haiku and rhyming forms they have been learning. Our budding poets are

also developing their communication skills as they understand how to use performance feedback.

In Grade 2, we are wrapping up our ‘Sharing The Planet’ inquiry into the Central Idea, ‘Water Is A Vital Resource’.

This term, we have written two water experience narratives from different perspectives, one as ourselves and the

other as someone who has difficulty accessing clean water. We are looking forward to beginning our final inquiry,

‘Everyday materials can be changed in a variety of ways for particular purposes.’

MIDDLE UNIT

Welcome to Term 4! In Grade 3 we are continuing our inquiries into the way ‘Organisations benefit humankind’,

whilst in Grade 4 we are deepening our understandings of the way ‘Survival of a species depends on

environmental conditions’.

In Grade 3 we have been exploring ways we can develop our self-management skills, through planning and

documenting ideas for our own charities. At the end of Term 3 we met Donna, who is the manager at Vinnies

Alfredton, who inspired us to begin collecting donations for Vinnies. We are putting together a plan of what to

collect and will deliver the donations to her Alfredton store in November. Stay tuned to find out how you

can help!

Students in Grade 4 are excited to announce that over the past week we have been working remarkably hard as

researchers, looking at how different species have adapted to survive in different environments all around the

world. We are putting all of our findings into the form of an information report and we cannot wait for you to see!

Today we have journeyed to IMAX and the Melbourne Museum to find out more!

SENIOR UNIT

Welcome back to Term 4! I know we say it a lot, but this term is incredibly busy in the Senior Unit. This term we

have Grade 6 Exhibition, graduation, celebration day, 5/6 cricket cup, Grade 5 Sovereign Hill visit, transition days

and our Twilight Market stalls. As you can see, both students and teachers are going to be on the go constantly

this term and your support through this is greatly appreciated.

Grade 6 students are busily preparing the final stages of their exhibition. The Exhibition is to be held next Wednes-

day the 23rd from 6-7.30pm in the MPR. We encourage as many members of the school community to come

along and celebrate all the wonderful learning these students have done over the last 8 weeks. Formal invitations

for Grade 6 families will be sent out later this week.

Grade 5 students are excitedly preparing for their Sovereign Hill visit on Thursday and Friday. Students have been

examining life in colonial Australia and how it impacted on the natural environment and the indigenous communi-

ties.

Our Unit assembly dates have been locked in for Friday November 1st and Friday November 29th. We would love

to see as many families there as possible.

In our entry way between the Media Room and Ms. Hartmann’s room we have a new parent

information board!! This board has been created especially with families in mind and will have

a regular cybersafe hot topic as well as handy tips, websites and helplines to support children’s

safe use of the internet and social media apps and how to manage screen time with young

children.

Keep an eye out on SeeSaw for an upcoming date for families to come in and discuss their con-

cerns and experiences together at school.

The Sustainable Gardening Kitchen is very grateful to all

the wonderful families that so willingly help out by caring

for our chooks and garden on the weekends and holidays,

and to those families that kindly donate items and goods

for us to use and share.

Sustainable Updates ...

Happy gardening,

cooking and caring for our environment,

Ms. Hartmann

Don't forget your

re-usable bags when you

go shopping from the 1st

of November as it is

planned that light weight

plastic bags will be

banned in all retail

outlets in Victoria.

CROW ALERT … our Chooks are un-

der attack from crows who have been

taking their eggs and swooping on them.

Grade Three A have come up with a

solution, hanging upcycled CD’s around

their chook cage to ward them off and

protect them. Thank you, Grade 3A!

Here is a great recipe to make with eggs—Eggy Bread! Serve it with seasonal fruit or

vegetables depending on your taste. Even vegemite or honey tastes great!

EGGY BREAD METHOD

Ingredients Whisk together egg, milk, salt and pepper

3 eggs Cut slices of bread into quarters

4 slices of thick bread Soak each piece of bread in the egg mixture and coat well

2 tablespoons of milk Heat a little butter in a fry pan and fry the soak bread until

1 tablespoon of butter golden brown, turning once

Salt and pepper to taste Any left over mixture can be poured over the bread while it

is cooking
