T he new big trend in home design is almost here according to experts.

Transitioning your indoor space outdoors by harmo-nising your plants and fl owers with the latest hues is set to be the new big thing when it comes to creating a luxurious living space.

If you like the look of Dulux’s annual paint colour forecast of a retro feel with a return to the 1960s and 1970s, Yates horticulturist, Angie Thomas, has you covered in how to bring those bright colours outside.

“A pansy ‘Joker Mix’ of pink, yellow and warm browns oozes retro and looks fantastic massed in a sunny or partly shaded garden bed or in a container comple-mented by a hanging basket full of

dusky pink toned sweet peas and alyssum,” she said.

“For extra drama add ‘Black Knight’ pansies as a stunning contrast.”

Other plants that tone well with the Retro Remix palette include Summerina ‘Twilight’, a rudbeckia with earthy brown orange fl owers, Oenothera ‘Twilight’, an evening primrose which has light pink fl owers and green to plum coloured foliage, and Salvia ‘Ember’s Wish’ which produces bright coral blooms.

“If you prefer warmer shades, plant Calendula ‘Pacifi c Beauty’ for a dazzling winter display of yellow and orange, and as an added bonus you can use the fl owers as an edible garnish,” Ms Thomas said.

By placing some of these plants so you can see them from inside will enhance the integrated indoor/outdoor eff ect.

Ms Thomas also says that no task is impossible and that no matter where your home is located and what size outdoor space you have, by extending your interior design colours outdoors you will blur the line between indoors and outside and lead your eyes, and feet, out into the view.

Taking the bright, warm and vibrant indoor colours outside into the garden or balcony will help make living spaces appear bigger, brighter and more modern, perfect for the entertain-ing season.

Are you fi nancially protected?

I nsurance and fi nancial protection are never “party talk” and no one ever gets excited about a great insur-

ance policy so it stands to reason most of us rarely think about what insurance we have in place if any, and assess whether it is appropri-ate or not.

When we are young, we like to think we are bullet proof and things like life insurance and income protection are so far from the top of our priority list that we do little if anything about making sure we are fi nancially protected in the event of something happen-ing to us. Some of us just fl at out think we don’t need insurance. I understand this thinking for sure, no one likes paying insurance premiums!

A colleague of mine has a great line to put into perspective; he says, “what would you say to a mate who bought a brand new

car and didn’t take out insur-ance on the car… we’d all call them an idiot!” Yet the fi nancial consequences of being unable to work for six months or more are potentially far greater, yet accord-ing to a 2012 study only 23 per cent of Australians have income protection insurance.

The amount of people fi nan-cially exposed in Australia due to underinsurance is frightening. According to TAL 55 per cent of people acknowledge they are underinsured and the death or disablement of them or their partner would result in signifi cant fi nancial stress.

Australia has prided itself on the “She’ll be right” mantra, and this certainly runs true in personal insurance, although we all acknowledge that unfortunately people pass away unexpectedly all the time, and suff er serious sick-ness or injury that prevents them

from working for a period of time, however we never think it will be us. Although we can’t prevent these things from happening we can protect ourselves and family fi nancially.

A good fi nancial planner will be able to assess your situation and determine the types and level of cover you require based on your individual needs.

The main reason why most of us don’t have insurance is apathy and the belief that it won’t happen to us, the other is the cost. Many of us simply do not have spare cash fl ow to pay the premiums; others would like to direct any spare cash to other things such as investments or reducing the mortgage.

In this case Superannuation may be the answer. Premiums can be funded via superannuation, but this does have some conse-quences. Talk to an advisor today.

Labels: You can’t have enough labels. Why not even label the box you keep your labels in? When you put something away that you don’t use regularly, you’ll simply forget where it is and end up ripping up half the house to find it. Labelling things properly will save you a lot of hassle.

Lists: When doing a spring clean or getting your house more organised, create a list of things to do and work your way through it. You can even have different types of lists. For example, a list of things you must do, and a list of things that you would like to do in the long term.

Rules: Put things back where you found them! It’s an old rule we learn when we’re young, but it’s one that we should all stick to. If something is in a certain drawer, make sure it finds its way back to that drawer after you use them. Keep your keys in the one place and train yourself to always put them there, for example.

Rewards: Reward yourself for being organised. For example, if you’ve cooked at home every day for a week and that was your goal, treat yourself to a meal out. If you’ve cleaned the house from top to tail, go shopping!

Water damage on carpets and fl oors

W ith all the rain the Nepean area has seen of late, espe-cially the deluge

we received the last weekend of January, quite a few homes and properties have been inundated with water.

So what can you do if your fl oors have been damaged by water? If you have ‘clean’ water damage eg a tap leak, an overfi lled sink or bathtub etc onto carpet the main priority is to get the water out of the carpet. If the carpet is left damp it can start to grow moulds and mildews, which can be hazardous to your health and the backing can begin to rot.

The method used to remove the water will depend on the amount of water in the carpet. If it’s a large amount, you may have to use the services of a professional carpet cleaning company. If it’s not a huge amount you can try soak-

ing it up yourself. Grab a bunch of clean, dry towels, place them over the aff ected areas and either stand on them or apply some other source of pressure.

Repeat this until you’ve removed as much of the dampness as you think is possible; the more dry the better. If necessary, you could try pulling the carpet up from one corner, placing something on the fl oor and folding the carpet back on itself, over the object to allow airfl ow to assist the drying process. Once it’s dry you may have to enlist the help of a carpet layer to stretch the carpet back onto the pins around the edge, but it will be cheaper to pay a service call than for new carpet!

If the water damage is due to ‘dirty’ water, eg fl ood waters or sewerage, things are that bit harder to clean up. In this instance you will defi nitely need to hire a professional carpet cleaning

company. However, more than likely, and especially so with sewerage, your carpets may need to be replaced. In ‘dirty’ waters there are many more bacteria and germs that if left in your carpets can cause potentially great risks to your health.

If the water damage is not on carpet, but on hard fl ooring prod-ucts then you potentially have a much bigger problem. If you have timber, bamboo or laminate fl ooring, water exposure can completely destroy your fl oors. Because each of these products is made of a material that expands and contracts under diff erent environmental conditions they can warp, buckle, peel and crack when exposed to water.

Get the fl oor dry as quickly as possible and then assess over the next few days as it dries out.

Selecting the rightwhite paint

S electing white paint seems like an easy enough task. That is, until you stand in front of

a selection of paint chips in-store and discover there’s an endless amount of white hues on off er. One person’s white, for example, is another person’s cream. It’s quite an interesting exercise trying to establish exactly what white you like and then ensuring it transfers successfully onto your walls at home.

Here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure white paint works for you.

Ask About TintsWhite paint is tinted with other

colours like green, blue, yellow and pink.

Unless you choose a pure white, like our New Look New York Lights or Dulux Vivid White, you’re going to end up with a white that includes another hue.

The best thing you can do in-store is ask one of the staff to tell you what tints are in your white paint, some whites have more yellow in them, others more blue.

Don’t be backward in coming forward, either; the more you tell them about your plans at home, the more they can recommend a white that’ll suit your space.

Consider Your Light SourceWhite is going to look consid-

erably diff erent depending on the light in your room. A sun-drenched room can make a white wall give off a colour eff ect that ranges from cream to blue, depending on where you live and what time of day it is.

If your room is darker and will feature artifi cial lighting, this will again eff ect the white on your walls (a yellow bulb can make a space feel yellow, while fl uores-cent lighting casts off blue tones).

Think About Your Furniture

What is going against your wall? It really can make or break how the white paint ends up reading to the eye.

A red couch against a white wall will, without a doubt, create some pink eff ects visually. If you have art going on the wall, this will also impact the white paint and how it reads.

Again, it’s always best to talk to the manager in-store and explain what other colours you have at play in your room.

is grab a sample paint pot and put some on your wall.

Check your pipes to avoid disaster

B roken water pipes, leaking shower trays, blocked drains, leaking waste pipes, leaking

hot water heaters or overfl owing gutters. These can not only be annoying but also lead to costly damages and insurance premi-ums.

Flooding of garages, peeling paint, mould, wet stains on ceil-ings/walls, loose tiles, wet electri-cal cables, swelling timber, damp carpet and of course the odour it produces if left unchecked. These are just some of the problems caused by water entering where it should not.

If you are concerned or have had consistent problems in the past like I have just mentioned it may pay to get these concerns addressed.

Your local tradesman can provide the answer, with their expertise and the use of a CCTV

that can view internal workings of your drains, locating problems or potential problems before they arise.

High pressure water jetting can assist in cleaning out those storm water pits and drain lines, while mechanical eel machines can assist just as well especially with sewer blockages .

Correct testing of your shower tiles and pipe work can determine if either your water proofi ng has failed or there is another leak source.

Gutters full of leaves with blocked down pipes are a classic problem for over fl owing gutters and are easily checked, then recti-fi ed by cleaning out the debris. Once cleaned a good gutter guard will assist in keeping the guttering system clean and working ready for the next rain.

Though no matter how much we try in some of the extreme

weather we have there can still be over fl ows and leaks, due to hail blocking up drains and gutter outlets. The sheer volume of rain at one time can put any system to its test.

So it’s a good idea to at least check some of these items sooner rather than later, but it’s better late than never.
