My Personal Journey

My Journey as a caregiver began in 2008. My companion of 22 years was diagnosed with mixed dementia. He passed away in 2013. At first, I thought he was just being angry or forgetful. His feet were

bothering him and walking was difficult. His primary doctor advised him to see a neurologist. The neurologist per-formed an MRI and the diagnosis was Primary Progressive Aphasia. Another diagnosis was Vascular Dementia, and Frontal Temporal Dementia.

I knew I could not deal with this alone. For help, I reached out to Alzheimer’s Family Organization and attended their Caregiver’s Support Group. That was the best decision I ever made. I mentioned to Pam Jacobson, our Parish Nurse, that it would be nice if we had a Caregiver’s Support Group here at church. She then asked me to facilitate the group. The first meeting was somewhat intimidating, but I had experienced what other caregivers go through.

As the facilitator, I decided the caregivers needed information to get them through this challenging endeavor. Along, with sharing and caring for one another, they have become family and depend on each other. It is important that they understand that their finances, power of attorney, and wills must be updated immediately and an Elder Law attorney is the one to see regarding those documents. I never realized those things were so important.

Taking care of my companion was not easy, but I decided that was where I was placed and I was going to take care of him as long as he needed me. I put one foot in front of the other and took one day at a time, depending on God every step of the way. At times, he seemed lucid and it would give me hope. But the other shoe would drop, his lucid time ended and the dementia was still there. He was an educated, smart man. He worked as an electrical engineer and owned many properties here in Pasco County. This disease does not choose who it affects.

Being a caregiver made me a better person. Now I am thankful that I had the challenge. It lead me to the road of be-ing a Caregiver Support Group Facilitator for Alzheimer’s Family Organization and Hudson First United Methodist Church.

Caregiver’s Support Group meets here at First United Methodist Church every 3rd Tuesday at 10:00 AM

Stephen Ministry

Everyone says “Fall is right around the corner!”, and as you prepare to enter Fall, ask yourself if you’re open to a new experience. Our main music groups have re-turned to rehearsal on a regular basis, and guess what?! We’d LOVE to have you join us! Whether you are interested in singing, ringing, or playing a wind or string instrument, we want you to consider being a part of the Worship Arts ministry.

We have around 150 adults who sing, ring, or play in one of the Worship Arts groups here at Hudson First UMC. Consider offering your gifts—developed or not– as we pool our resources for one purpose: to glorify our Heavenly Father. If you are interested, please con-tact me at:

As many of you know, we’ve been operating at a loss for quite a while. Staff and church leaders are doing their best to control expenses. However, with a church this size, and with so many ministries, it does take money to keep every-thing running. People have started to step up to the plate by increasing their giving, which helped us to operate in the black last month. We need to continue that trend, so please pray about what you can do to help the church finances. Thanks for giving!
