Reflective contextual text
The goal of this Mini ethnography multimodal project was to introduce novices to the
field of outdoor education. This was a non-traditional assignment in that we could use any visual
platform we wanted to create the text. I chose a magazine as I felt that was the most
appropriate for my field. The goal of my magazine was to encourage interest in entering the
field, while also providing all the information someone would need to know before entering the
field. Some strategies that I used were to consider my own experiences in outdoor recreation,
as it is the only field I’ve ever had a job in, as well as a field I interact with often being a rock
climber. I considered how exactly I entered into this field and the knowledge I have gained
through classes and experience, and I transferred that into my text. I met the course goal of
Producing texts in various genres and formats for various discipline by creating this magazine. I
also reached the goal of reflecting on my own writing by having two reflections for this
assignment.
What I changed
In the video you uploaded to our shared folder you told me all I really needed to do was explain
the various ways of entering my field more. I unfortunately went to my magazine and found that
I could not edit the magazine once I had published it, so on the next page of this document I
have created a new page of my magazine that I would add if I could edit it. I basically explained
the multiple ways you could enter the field of outdoor recreation.
How to enter
the field of
outdoor
recreation
There are many ways you can enter this incredible field. The way that I for one entered, was by getting a
high school job at Mast general store in the outdoor section. This job helped me learn about all the gear
required in the outdoors, as well as introduced me to many professionals and community members in
outdoor education and recreation. This led me to more jobs in outdoor recreation as well as outdoor
experiences. Other ways to enter the field is to pick up an outdoor hobby. By spending time at a rock
climbing craig, hiking on trails and swimming in rivers, you inevitably meet people. Outdoor recreation is
interesting because you can market yourself while enjoying a view or having fun in your outdoor sport. If
outdoor sports aren't your thing, volunteering at outdoor events is another way to get your foot in the
door. Working over the summer at camps is another incredible way to get into outdoor education, There
are thousands of camps all looking for eager high schoolers/college students over the summers, and this
is such a rewarding way to get into recreation management. You could work your way up the ladder at the
summer camp, your employers could pay for your certifications or even introduce you to other camps or
outdoor jobs. There are hundreds of ways to get into outdoor education you just have to be willing to get
outside and talk to people!
