Overview

Water Injection Dredging (WID) is a dredging technique

that removes sediment ‘the natural way’. It is an efficient

and environmentally friendly way of maintaining the depth

of navigation channels, ports and rivers. A water injection

dredger can work very close to embankments and quay

walls because of the manoeuvrability of the vessel.

Van Oord developed this efficient and cost-effective

hydrodynamic dredging technique, which removes sediment

with the help of natural processes. For over 30 years Van Oord

has been using this technique to execute maintenance dredging

work in ports, marinas, estuaries and access channels around

the world. Water injection dredging is a proven technology and

Van Oord continuously strives to find new innovative solutions

to keep its leading position in this specialised market.

The method

Water injection dredging is highly effective in recently

deposited fine sediments that consist of fine sand, silt and

clay particles. This unique dredging method injects water

into the subsoil and fluidizes the fine sediments creating a

density current. This density current moves under the influence

of natural forces away from the dredged area and takes the

sediment particles with it, either to deeper areas at sea or to

high energy environments where the sediment is brought back

into the water column, where it becomes part of the natural

system of erosion, transportation and deposition of sediments.

Sustainability

Environment

Embedded in Van Oord’s culture is the consideration for the

environment that we undertake in our operations. Water injection

dredging relies on nature to take care of the horizontal transport

of sediments, therefore eliminating the need for mechanical means

of moving dredged materials. This results in a considerably lower

CO2 footprint per dredged cubic meter of sediment.

Sustainable cost saving

The deployment of water injection dredging provides a

sustainable cost saving. Applied under the right circumstances,

this method can equal the production of trailing suction hopper

dredgers. Due to its size and manoeuvrability, water injection

dredgers are able to work within busy ports, marinas and water

ways without causing disturbance to marine traffic. Road transport

Our smaller dredgers can be disassembled and easily transported

by road. As a result, they can be employed in lakes, estuaries,

ports, rivers and even on quarry reservoirs where sand or gravel

mining activities need to be executed.

New generation

Van Oord has ordered the construction of two state-of-the-art

water injection vessels. The new water injection vessels will be

equipped with a hybrid energy management system. This new

generation of vessels is versatile and has water injection

dredging, mass flowing and power jetting systems. The latest

technological developments have also been applied, such as

heave compensation and dynamic positioning, which means

that the dredging can be performed more efficiently.

Advantages

- Environmentally friendly

- Our smaller units are containerized and road transportable,

easy to mobilise

- No pipelines, barges blocking or disrupting waterways

- Considerably lower CO2 footprint per m3

- Cost-effective as no auxiliary equipment is required

- Dredged sediments remain within the existing sediment system

- No disposal area needed

Equipment

Our water injection dredging vessels are shallow drafted, self-propelled and highly manoeuvrable to work in

confined areas and in strong currents. Some of our smaller water injection dredging units are containerized

and can be transported by road. Some of our vessels are designed as multi-purpose vessels to which

excavator attachments can be fitted, enabling cutter suction dredging or mechanical excavation.
