IFLA GLOBAL BSLA MEETING

IFLA organized a 3 day meeting cum workshop on 30 May to 2 June 2016, in Manila, Philippines. It was attended by a total of 53 participants from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Middle East and Europe, IFLA trainers, consultant and IFLA Officials. Brunei was represented by Pn Nellie and Amal Syukriyyah. Also in attendance were Donna Scheeder IFLA President, IFLA SecGen Mr Gerald Leitner.


EXCO MEETINGS

The Exco met on 27 April 2016, 4 May 2016 and on 17 May 2016, to discuss

forthcoming BLA Conference, LeadershIp Workshop and future activities. The meetings

were chaired by Pn Nellie, BLA President.

POLITEKNIK BRUNEI

Ahmad Mundzir Syazah, Md Noor Amin, Izzat Hassan, Azam, PB students from the Digital Media 02 intake 5 pictured with Pn Nellie, BLA President. They were in Class of 64 Library on 18 April 2016, to conduct a study of libraries for their project. They wanted to know more about the history, mission and vision, collection and services provided by Class 64 Library.


FOCAL MEETING 4

BLA held a Forum of Chief Librarians Meeting 4 on Wednesday 8 June 2016. This time Politeknik Brunei Library hosted the meeting which was attended by Heads of main libraries. FOCAL welcomed Dy Amalina Hj Ramli Chief Librarian from the Attorney General Chambers. The meeting was chaired by Pn Nellie, BLA President. A sharing session was held to share knowledge and information from activities organsied and attended by BLA representatives . These included reports on INELI ASEAN, BSLA Global Meeting in Manila, Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2016, BLA Study visit to Bangkok libraries and BLA Emerging Leaders Workshop. The meeting went on to receive updates from FOCAL members, deliberated on issues affecting library and librarianship development in the country and exchange of publication among members. The President and members later visited the Politeknik Brunei library led by Dy Hjh Norsenah.

The meeting also acknowledged the coordination by BLA in which this year 2 Brunei winners Pg Khamarul Zaman for The New King of Fruits won Grand Prize and Mohd Faiz for the Crazy Firefly won second prize in the Samsung Kidstime Author Award 2016 were announced.


IFLA GLOBAL BSLA MEETING

The meeting objectives were to:

Review and celebrate the outcomes and impact of the programme and projects

from 2013;

Explore the roles of the library associations, including their similarities and

differences;

Support networking between associations and activities to support continued

collaboration after participating BSLA;

Define what makes an association a success;

examine factors that will ensure the sustainability long term viability of

associations; raise awareness about trends and factors that will influences the

role of associations; and potential for advocacy in the future; review the

programme over its lifespan to develop a future strategy and linkages with other

BSLA EMERGING EMERGING LEADERS WORKSHOP

The first of four modules of the BSLA Emerging Leaders Workshop organized by the BLA in conjunction with its 30

th anniversary for its Executive Board members was launched on Tues 10 May 2016 at the

DBP Library, Lambak Kanan and was opened by Pn Nellie, BLA President. This workshop is a follow-up of the successful IFLA/BLA BSLA Workshop on Leadership held in June in Bangkok last year. This is a compulsory training workshop on building strong library associations and was organized and run by its young and promising Executive Board members and chaired by Dy Nor Rahidah Hj Ghani. Pn Nellie acted as mentor. Aims of the workshop are:

1. To provide knowledge and experience in a leadership role. Especially when dealing with the latest technology advances, librarians in particular need to keep abreast with the current news and information to provide satisfactory service to consumers. 2. To develop administrative and management skills in the library is very important in achieving the country's vision 2035. 3. To provide guidance, challenge and inspire leadership skills by learning through the leadership workshop. 4. To show the kind of leadership that can be embraced by their superiors, colleagues and subordinates. However, they must have the skills and thinking of a leader to master these challenges and meet the high expectations faced by the new leaders of today.

Each Executive member delivered a topic and took turns to make their own presentations in an effort to share and learn from one another. The full day workshop consisted of four topics namely the Role of BLA by Nooralizah, How can I be involved in BLA? by Hj Talip, Public speaking by Hjh Rosnani and Customer services by Amal Syukriyyah. This first module is an introduction of the reality, context, and the multifaceted aspects of the library. The participants reflected on these aspects in the context of their own roles, strategically or their own respective teams, as well as cooperation and alliances inside and outside the organization. BLA wishes to congratulate the Chair and speakers for a successful workshop. Looking forward to the

UTB LIBRARY BOOK BAZAAR

In conjunction with UTB’s 30th anniversary, UTB Library

organised a 4 day book bazaar from 18-21 April 2016 in the

library premises. It was participated by 13 book vendors. Its

aims were to encourage academicians and students to buy

books for personal use and to recommend titles for the

library acquisition.


BLA ROADSHOW AT SM AWANG SEMUAN

BLA was invited to take part in the exhibition to mark the World Book Day celebrations

organised by SM Awang Semaun in Kg Sungai Kebun on Saturday 23 April 2016 from 8am to

1230pm. The half day event included 6 segments on World Book Day activities around the

world, a Bicara Buku, a book donation and parallel activities.

BLA displayed various BLA merchandises, promoted the career of a librarian and publicised its

forthcoming Conference on Libraries Transform to be held on 20-22 Sept 2016. BLA also made

a donation of books to the library, a contribution from BLA members. The President and

members also visited the school library.


BLA TAHLIL EVENT

BLA held a Tahlil event on Friday 20 May 2016 at the Institut Tahfiz Sultan Haji Hassanal

Bolkiah. It was attended by 50 members, officers and students of the institute.


VISIT TO DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY

Pn Nellie and Amal Syukriyyah took time off on Friday 3 June 2016 to visit the De La Salle University after the Global BSLA Meeting in Manila. De La Salle University is a private Catholic coeducational institution founded in 1911 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The University is a hub for higher education training renowned for its academic excellence, prolific and relevant research, and involved community service. The libraries primarily supports the institution's instructional, curricular, research, and extension programs through organized, relevant, and fast delivery of information services. There are also Roving Information Assistants floor walking the library, the main library is on 9 levels. An interesting lazy corner and spacious floor space is an envy of every librarian. The book shelves are also numbered in running numbers which have to be changed at least twice a year.
