BRUNEI DARUSSALAM SPORTS GALLERY

Brunei Darussalam’s first sports gallery at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas was opened on 7 April 2014 by His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office

Its objectives are to show Brunei’s historical sports development, to educate the younger generation and to appreciate the achievements made by the athletes. It is dedicated to athletes that have done Brunei proud regionally and internationally, including para-athletes. The gallery can also serve as a mentorship platform for the veteran athletes to act as role models to inspire aspiring athletes and contribute to National Vision 2035.

Among the displays are photographs of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien gracing the Regatta Events in the 1970s and tug-of-war during al-Marhum's Birthday Celebrations. It also displays a collection of trophies and sports gear and has walls adorned with pictures of athletes and memorabilia from when Brunei hosted the 1999 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, including the Games’ mascot Awang Budiman.

The gallery also showcases the participation of veteran athletes from the 1950s to the 1990s in events that contributed to the country's excellence in sports. Young athletes could learn to appreciate that in the old days, the athletes did not enjoy the same kind of assistance and sponsorship the youngsters receive yesterday. It is hoped that the aspiring young atheletes will get inspiration from athletes perseverance, confidence and view the sports industry as a serious profession that can contribute to the nation’s development

The gallery has five zones and each represents a different historical timeline.

Zone A exhibits national sports from the 1950s to 1990s, Zone B exhibits the Royal families’ sports participation, including the Crown Prince's active

involvement in football, badminton, cue sports and boat racing. His Royal Highness' interest and involvement in sports has largely contributed to development and excellence in national sports, be it as leader or as an athlete representing the country in regional and international championships

Zone C has exhibits on the 1999 SEA Games, exhibits the participation of national athletes in the Southeast Asia or SEA Games, as well as the nation's successful hosting of the 1999 SEA Games.

BRITISH LIBRARY WELCOMES NEW EXCEPTIONS TO COPYRIGHT

(28 March 2014)   The UK’s Intellectual Property Office issued five draft statutory instruments on exceptions to copyright, following the Government’s 2010 review of intellectual property law, Digital Opportunity.

The British Library welcomes the new exceptions, which will bring significant benefits for library users across the UK, and will support research, innovation and economic growth. The proposed changes, which are due to come into effect on 1 June, include:  Making digital preservation of sound and film lawful; Extending ‘fair dealing’ for non-commercial research and private study to allow the copying of sound and film, including the facilitation of copying by a librarian or curator; Allowing the digitisation of the Library’s analogue collections to be used on dedicated computer terminals on the Library’s own premises; Allowing Text and Data Mining for non-commercial research purposes; Allowing the Library and its users to apply UK copyright limitations and exceptions, irrespective of contracts with publishers and suppliers.

Roly Keating, Chief Executive of the British Library, said: “These balanced and proportionate changes are a valuable step forward for research. They will go a long way toward making UK copyright laws fit for the digital age, and bringing them into line with other developed countries. The British Library commends the Government and the Intellectual Property Office for their determined work to bring these new exceptions before Parliament.

Benjamin White, Head of Intellectual Property at the British Library, has produced a detailed guide to the implications of the changes of UK copyright law for libraries and for the general public in Britain. This guide has been made available through the website of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. Source: ACCESS@LibraryLearningSpace - 30th Issue
