IFLA GLOBAL VISION 2018 WORKSHOP-BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

On 9 and 10 July 2018, the Brunei Darussalam Library Association in cooperation with Dewan Bahasa dan

Pustaka Brunei organized the 2 day workshop at Balai Sarmayuda which was participated by 20 librarians

from various library sectors. It was declared open by Puan Hjh Sariani Hj Ishak, Acting Director, DBP Brunei.

Certificates were presented by Pn Nellie at the end of the workshop.

The workshop is a continuation of the global discussion on IFLA Global Vision on an united library field which began worldwide in 2017. This time with emphasis on Advocacy and Collaboration. It was conducted by two facilitators and two Table Leaders with participants engaged in interactive and participative discussions and role play.

Outcome of this workshop will help IFLA plan the future to realise a strong and united library field powering literate, informed and participative societies. Go to page 2.

ASIAN FESTIVAL OF CHILDREN’S CONTENT 2018

This year AFCC celebrates “Imagine-Asia” as the festival theme and Singapore as the Country of Focus.

More than 90 local and international writers, illustrators, publishers, storytellers, educators, translators and

more will gather to discuss the creation and development of Asian content for children.

AFCC 2018 features a diverse and thought-provoking line-up of over 70 talks, workshops and

masterclasses across four programme tracks.

Award-winning writer Suchen Christine Lim will give the annual Children’s Lecture, while we pay tribute to

the late pioneer illustrator Kwan Shan Mei with a retrospective exhibition of some of her best-known

illustrations. There will also be a book fair, book launches, performances and more!

This year, AFCC is proud to feature Singapore as the Country of Focus

In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Singapore Book Council, AFCC celebrates Singapore as the Country of Focus this year.

Singapore has a relatively short history of children’s book publication, compared to other Asian countries. But in recent years we have seen a burgeoning scene that has become more vibrant and diverse. There are more publications in the four languages and increasingly many titles have been sold to foreign markets. From Mooty to Amos Lee and Sherlock Sam, we have also created our own iconography of beloved children’s characters over the years. AFCC gathers local writers, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, academics and practitioners to take part in a series of specially curated programmes, as we discuss topics such as developing our children’s literature and building our readers. BIBLIOTHERAPY

Bibliotherapy, a therapeutic approach that uses literature to support good mental health, is a versatile and cost-effective treatment option often adapted or used to supplement other types of therapy. Proponents of the approach suggest mild to moderate symptoms of several mood-related conditions can be successfully treated with reading activities. Both individual and group therapy may utilize this method, which is considered appropriate for children, adolescents, and adults. Mental health professionals may encourage those in therapy and those who are waiting for therapy to read for guidance or self-help, developmental purposes, to learn about mental health concerns, and for the therapeutic benefits of imaginative literature. Today, bibliotherapy is employed by educators, helping professionals, librarians, and even parents. Its versatility and adaptability make it an excellent supplement to self-improvement of all kinds.

"The use of books selected on the basis of content in a planned reading program designed to facilitate the recovery of patients suffering from mental illness or emotional disturbance. Ideally, the process occurs in three phases: personal identification of the reader with a particular character in the recommended work, resulting in psychological catharsis, which leads to rational insight concerning the relevance of the solution suggested in the text to the reader's own experience. In 1966, the Association of Hospital and Institution Libraries, then a division of the American Library Association, issued a statement on nomenclature accepting the following definition:

Bibliotherapy: The use of selected reading materials as therapeutic adjuvants in medicine and psychiatry; also guidance in the solution of personal problems through directed reading. (AHIL Quarterly, Summer 1966, p. 18.)

The duality of a guided therapy by a medical or psychiatric professional vs. directing the reader to a selection of books on an issue continues. The resources offered on this page address the directed reading aspect of bibliotherapy, which may distinguished from the more general readers' advisory by the presence of the "problem" to be resolved through reading.

PTES MARKED WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY 2018 By Masnunah Haji Mohammad Yassin, IBTE Nakhoda Ragam

On 9 May 2018 BLA was invited by PTE Sengkurong to take

part in an exhibition to mark World Book And Copyright Day

2018. It was held from 8am to 12 noon at the Multipurpose

Hall of the college.

BLA took this opportunity to raise awareness of its role and to

get students to be interested in a career as a librarian, sell its

merchandise, publications, buttons, mugs and book marks.

BLA team was led by Dy Saidah Hj Mohammad (deceased) ,

Pg Hjh Norsiah Pg Haji Damit and Masnunah Haji

Mohammad Yassin.

Awang Hanafi bin Haji Salleh, Senior History Officer of Brunei History Centre was the Guest of Honour with

Aw Haji Jafri bin Haji Suhaili, PTES Principal as Chairman of the event.

The programme included a video clip on school reading programmes in cluster 2, a talk on copyright and

copyright infringement (piracy) by Dk Hajah Ena Suraya binti Pg Haji Mohammad, Legal Advisor of the

International Trade and Intellect Unit, ‘Bicara Buku’ by ‘Si Beracun’ and poetry reading PTES students.

3 July 2018 One thousand 519 new students began orientation week of the Institute of Brunei Technical Education, IBTE for July intake. IBTE offers the National Technical Education Certificate, NTec and the Higher National Technical Certificate, HNTec programme.

4 July 2018 The 8th intake of the National Service Program, PKBN, will be held from 2 December 2018 to 14 of March 2019.

6 Jul 2018 Launching of 16 new Ambulances. The ministry of Health now has 30 ambulances operating at all districts which are kept at 4 sub-stations.

7 July 2018 Women’s Business Council-Brunei Darussalam celebrated its 18th anniversary with Women Entrepreneurs’ Day and an awards presentation ceremony. The recipients were Dayang Hajah Hadijah bte Haji Mohd Husaini; Dayang Siti Aidah bte Dato Paduka Pengarah Haji Othman: and Dayang Hajah Rohaya bte Ebi.

9 July 2018 Office of the Director General of Education, Ministry of Education with the cooperation of the Schools Department, Examinations Department, Private Education Division and Special Education Section as well as University of Cambridge International Examinations held the Ministry of Education's Excellent Students Awards 2017 ceremony for 265 students, In recognition and appreciation of students who achieved excellence in the academic field, especially in public examinations. It was held at the Chancellor's Hall, UBD.

12 July 2018 Thirty five distress calls were made to the Fire and Rescue Department , in the evening after strong winds and heavy rain uprooted trees and blew off roofs in various parts of the country.

11 July 2018 Politeknik Brunei welcomed around 724 new students as the 8th intake for academic year 2018/2019. A total of 21 Diploma courses have been offered this year.

13 July 2018 Certificates presented to the participants of 5 th Sail Brunei 2018, in a ceremony at Kampong Sungai Bunga in Mukim Kota Batu. The Sail Brunei event is part of a three-month yacht rally starting from West Malaysia along the coasts of Borneo, including Brunei, before concluding in the east coast of Sabah. This year, Sail Brunei has 13 yachts with 27 participants from Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, France and the United States. Most of the participants are husband-and-wife crews and retired couples. They arrived in Brunei via Kuala Belait from Miri, on 7 July , and will depart via Serasa on 16 July

13 July 2018 Final match of the His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei’s 72nd Birthday Polo Tournament between Brunei and Singapore at the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club Jerudong. The Brunei team, led by His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah, emerged winners of the four-day tournament after defeating Singapore in the final.
