FHJC Celebrates Jewish Book Month Whether you were intrigued.....or if you missed it, you will be pleased by Rabbi Marc Cohen’s Bokser Lecture about the book he edited, The Observant Life, then you will be pleased to know that there will be opportunities to look at several chapters in depth. First, Rabbi Skolnik will teach a Monday night course that will cover three chapters. On November 5, he will discuss his chapter "Between Grandparents and Grandchildren”; On November 19 and 26, he will cover the chapter on Intellectual Property written by Rabbi Marc Cohen; On December 10 and 17, he will cover the chapter on Public Appearance and Behavior by Rabbi Gordon Tucker. Later in the year, Rabbi Drazen will look at the chapter on Kashrut. An annual highlight of Jewish Book Month at FHJC is the PA Book & Craft fair ‐ this is your chance to begin your Chanukah shopping and pick up something interesting for yourself. This year it will be Sunday and Monday, November 4 & 5. On November 13, Sisterhood will take part in this theme month. They will host a Book Discussion meeting featuring The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. Something for every interest during Jewish Book Month at FHJC. Calling all FHJC 6th graders and their families, our 6th grade book club will be meeting in November. Stay tuned for more information!

As I write this article, the first authen‐tically chill winds of autumn are blow‐ing through our little part of the world. Sukkot started out warmer than usual, with more than its share of rain, and it ended only partly as it began. There was more rain, to be sure, but the temperatures fell precipitously. When Sukkot began, we barely needed a jacket. By the time it ended, fleeces were amply in evidence.

My children who are living in very different climates tell me that one of the things they miss the most is the change of seasons, and I understand. As wonderful as it would be to live some‐where where shoveling snow is just not something I would have to deal with, I think that my two favorite times of year are right now—when, on the right day, it can look as if it’s raining multi‐colored leaves—and the very beginning of spring, but you walk outside and all of a sudden it looks as if the entire world is in bloom. It’s not just the physical beauty of these sights, al‐though they are lovely indeed. It’s what lies behind them‐ the timeless lesson of unending cycles, of death and rebirth, of change and renewal.

The first time I put on a sweater or fleece and walk outside, I feel an intense kind of exhilaration. On the most mundane level, the feeling is born of the realization that it will be a good long time before a car’s steering wheel will be too hot to touch, or I’ll have to worry about a balky air conditioner. There is, of course, always someone who will chime in on my moment of reverie and remind me of what I know all too well‐ it’s going to get a lot colder before it gets warmer again. Yes, yes… I know. And I’m sure I’ll miss the heat of summer all too quickly. But beyond the surface level, each change of season is what I like to call a shehecheyanu moment; it is a time to consciously stop and appreciate what it means to have reached this moment. We’ve lived to experience another turn on Joni Mitchell’s carou‐sel of time, and our run has been extended for another season. It is well worth the chill winds of winter‐ and even the snow shoveling‐ to see how the story of our lives, and those of our loved ones, continues to unfold.

Notes from the Hazzan The holidays are all behind us. Rosh Ha‐shanah and Yom Kippur with their meaningful services en‐hanced by a new Mahzor; Sukkot with

warm weather that enabled us to enjoy the beauty of nature while eating out‐doors (with of course some typical rain thrown in for good measure); Shmini Atzeret and Simhat Torah with wonderful singing, dancing and rejoicing by people of all ages. And now we are finally able to return to “regular” time with full work weeks followed by restful Shabbatot, with the reopening of religious school, the exciting educational opportunities we offer at FHJC, including a new Adult Bar and Bat Mitzvah class, and much more—the “comfortable rut,” as Rabbi Skolnik

called it in his sermon. But something is different this year and it begs addressing.

We give of ourselves to the congregation in myriad ways throughout the year, es‐pecially through the Kol Nidre appeal as well as through committee work and community service. But there is one more very important way in which every‐one can give; rich and poor, young and old, male and female, single and married. Our morning and evening minyan are now at a critical stage. Some regulars are no longer with us due to relocation, new employment, or even sad to say, failing health or worse. If our minyan is to con‐tinue to exist we need YOU to make a commitment. It will not sustain itself without new attendees. We have missed making a minyan a number of times these past few months and your fellow congregants who count on a minyan so they might say Kaddish for loved ones were unable to do so. This will cost you no more than a small amount of time but the reward is enormous. Choose one day

a week as your minyan day and become a member of this group of people who need you. There is no parking problem at 7am and we are always done so you can move your car well before 8am. There is usually no parking problem for Ma’ariv at 7:30pm either, so that is no reason not to come. And walking here is always some good exercise too. What a great way to attend to “refuat hanefesh u’refuat ha‐guf,” physical and spiritual health.

I wish it were not necessary to make this plea but sorry to say, it is. Let this be your “free‐will offering” for the New Year. Start or end your day by thanking God for giving you another day to enjoy the beauty of our world. By giving of yourself you will be giving to others and will re‐ceive a great personal reward in return.

The President’s Pen

With the holidays behind us we are looking forward to an exciting year of program‐ming geared to all ages. A quick look at www.FHJC.org, which I encour‐age you to visit, will reveal an ac‐

tion‐packed year of entertainment, edu‐cation and community service. We have an active and vibrant Men’s Club and Sis‐terhood, as well as an engaged Parents’ Association and Minyan Club which have scheduled many innovative programs.

The Center itself is intent on coming up with new ideas and creative ways to en‐gage our membership. The Scholar‐in‐Residence program brings to our syna‐gogue Dr. Mark Brettler, Chair of the De‐partment of Near Eastern Studies at Brandeis University and eminent Bible scholar. We have the pleasure of Dr. Bret‐tler’s insights for the entire weekend which includes free programming on Sat‐urday and a dinner, by reservation, for Friday evening. This program is made pos‐sible by the generous contribution of the Sevin Family in loving memory of Malvin Peace Sevin.

The Bokser Lecture will bring us a special opportunity to hear from Rabbi Martin Cohen, the author of “The Observant Jew” which is fast becoming the major literary guide for Conservative Judaism. This is another program that is free of charge and is made possible by the Rabbis Ben Zion and Baruch Bokser Memorial Foundation.

‘Casino and Cocktails’ will arrive at FHJC on November 17, 2012, which is planned as an evening of fun and games. We will reprise our successful “cash‐for‐gold” booth, so bring your old jewelry; we’ll have an open bar and delicious hors d'oeuvres, as well as professional croupi‐ers to run the games and teach us some new tricks, and lots of fabulous prizes. Our volunteer/co‐chairs Marla Cornejo and Michele Biletsky have been working hard to make this a fun evening and hope‐fully raise some needed funds for the synagogue. We are also preparing to have “Shabbat in the Gym” for our youngest children. This was a new program begun last year which brings children and their parents together with other community members on those cold, wintry Shabbat afternoons when they can’t play in the park.

Students in grades 3‐8 will visit during Religious School hours on Sunday. Nursery, Pre‐School and Kindergarten students will visit on Monday with their teach‐ers.

As we have just celebrated Simchat Torah, and begun a new cycle of Torah portions, we naturally focus on beginnings. Torah values have been the standard of Jewish society for 3,000 years. The Torah is a guide for living and a foundation for making behavioral judgments. The practice of doing mitzvot is built into our everyday lives. At school, we try to highlight the good deeds done by the children and their teachers. As educators of young children, we strive to provide experiences to help children inter‐nalize Jewish values. How we talk to children, respond to children,

behave towards them, their parents and colleagues will be observed and remembered by our children. What we do is far more important than what we say. Actions speak louder than words. We encourage you, as parents, to practice and create your own Jew‐ish traditions and pass on a legacy to your children. Early childhood is the beginning of your child’s Jewish education. Through positive Jew‐ish experiences, the children will identify and remember these valuable lessons. It’s our hope that the memories we create will be everlasting.

It is hard to think of a sweeter sight than our Gimmel (third‐grade students) standing under a chupph during the Aliyah that pre‐ceeds their receiv‐ing their very own siddur. Though I

can’t always participate, due to the realities of the Jewish calendar, this year I was hon‐ored to be under the chuppah with them. The electric excitement of the children is tangible. They are on the bima in the main sanctuary. They are in front of a congrega‐tion that includes their parents. It is a day of fresh beginnings for everyone, as we begin to read the Torah anew.

Beginnings are ripe with possibilities and opportunities. This year surrounded by the Gimmel class, it was difficult to get close enough to the Torah to touch it with my tallit. Our classes are growing and the participation of our families is growing too. With the children around me, I was able to look out at the congre‐gation and see their parents fully en‐gaged in the moment. For many of the families involved, this was the first time that the sanctuary that they were sitting in was theirs. Third grade families must become members of the Forest Hills Jewish Center. Each of the families par‐

ticipating had made a commitment to our community as well as to their own children. I believe, in that magical mo‐ment of seeing their children on the bima, under the chuppah, staring rapt as the Torah was read, they felt fully em‐braced and celebrated by our congrega‐tion and the Jewish people. It was a wonderful day for all involved.

How do we continue to invite these and other families in? They are a diverse group of talented and interesting indi‐viduals and each of them has made a commitment to being a part of our com‐munity. How do we learn who each of them is and what they can contrib‐ute? How do we find out what they need from us?

As part of a pilot program, funded by the Jewish Education Project, we will be in‐viting each of these families to help us answer these questions. We hope that it will help us learn about them as indi‐viduals, help them integrate into the community and will help us better serve all of the families in the Center. We will be sharing this information over the course of the year. I hope that next year, when a new group of third graders will be receiving their siddurim on Shabbat Bereishit, our fourth‐grade families will feel like old‐timers ready to put out their hands to the new kids on the block.


Youth Department News Mara Silver‐Smith

The year is off to a great start and there is even more to come! By the time you read this, the youth group will have celebrated the chagim, in‐cluding every‐one’s perennial

favorite activity, building edible sukkahs. Even though our night in the sukkah was dampened by the rain, the kids always enjoy being silly and coming up with their most interesting sukkah creations. (Being able to eat it after is a nice plus!) We will have painted the walls of the lounge, making the room uniquely ours for another year. Not to mention a color war, the usual trips to the gym, movies and popcorn and starting to raise money for Tikun Olam, USY’s tzedakah program.

We held our first Teen Shabbat of the year, once again welcoming everyone for a community Shabbat experience filled with dinner and z’mirot. Teen Shabbat has become a new FHJC youth group tradition and we are excited for it to con‐tinue through the year. A special thanks

to Rabbi Dave Siegel and his family for joining us.

At the beginning of November we are proudly hosting the USY Kiryah Divisional Fall Kinnus. This is an opportunity for kids from around the five boroughs to call FHJC home for the weekend and to show them why we love calling FHJC home every day.

There is so much going on this year, so make sure to keep an eye out for my weekly email updates as well as the cal‐endars and flyers posted on the bulletin boards by the glass doors and in the youth lounge. If you ever have any ques‐tions or are curious about youth group, please always feel free to stop by a meet‐ing and check it out. Everyone is wel‐come!

Youth Group is open to all kids between 3rd grade and 12th grade, both FHJC members and non‐members. We are divided into three groups, each meeting on a weekly basis in the youth lounge:

Tseerim – 3rd through 5th grade – meets Sundays from 12:30 to 2 pm

Kadima – 6th through 8th grade – meets Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 pm

USY – 9th through 12th grade – meets Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 pm


Whew! After all the hustle, prepa‐ration, and cele‐bration the High Holidays bring, the later Fall gives all of us a chance to catch our col‐lective breath and take a break. The PA proudly wel‐

comed our 3rd graders into the commu‐nity of the religious school minyan as we presented them with their own siddurim at a special ceremony on Shabbat Berei‐shit (October 13). The youngest mem‐bers of our community of learners were also welcomed that day as our Kinder‐garten students received their own plush torah scrolls. We were also thrilled to welcome a number of Nursery and Reli‐gious School parents to our first official meeting of the year. It was great to hear from them how we can work to be a better resource for both parents and kids.

As the weather turns colder, PA turns its attention to the warmth that community and celebration bring. Our Scholastic Book Fair (November 4, 5) is a great place to stock up on old and new favor‐

ites for all of the readers on your various gift lists. Religious and Nursery School teachers will each provide a list of books that they would like to use to enrich classroom time, so be sure to ask for your teacher’s list while you’re shopping. We will also be hosting several vendors again this year to add sparkle and magic to the dreary cold weather that’s on the way.

In December, PA will be taking part in the community‐wide Chanukkah event planned for Tuesday, evening, December 11. Be sure to check your email inboxes, and school backpacks for more informa‐tion. The evening promises to be filled with joy and light, not to mention suf‐ganiyot and latkes! It’s never too late to become a “Friend of the PA.” Consider giving the gift of community support by contributing $18 per family to fund a wide variety of classroom and commu‐nity enrichment programs. We always have room for friends, new and old, so please consider getting involved how‐ever you can. Come to a meeting and be a part of working to make our FHJC Community a warm and supportive place for all families.

Sisterhood Celebrates Jewish Book Month November 13, following evening minyan The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer

Sisterhood presents a book discussion of Julia Orringer’s acclaimed historical novel, The Invisible Bridge. This event is open to all Center members. Light refreshments will be served.

Couvert: $5 for Sisterhood members, and $8 for those who are not yet members

Synopsis—Paris, 1937. Andras Lévi, a Hungarian‐Jewish architecture student, arrives from Budapest with a scholarship, a single suitcase, and a mysterious letter he prom‐ised to deliver. But when he falls into a complicated relationship with the letter's recipient, he becomes privy to a secret that will alter the course of his—and his fam‐ily’s—history. From the small Hungarian town of Konyár to the grand opera houses of Budapest and Paris, from the despair of Carpathian winter to an unimaginable life in labor camps, The Invisible Bridge tells the story of a family shattered and remade in history’s darkest hour.

Adult Education

The FHJC Adult Education Com‐mittee is starting two new programs this year. Shiur Shabbat and a Shul‐Wide Shab‐baton as well as continuing many regularly sched‐

uled learning opportunities.

We are scheduling Shiur Shabbat on secu‐lar holiday weeks when little else is going on at FHJC. Many of our shul regulars do not go away and are in shul week in and week out. This is an extra treat for those who come to shul every week. There will be a class held at 12:45PM after Shabbat Kiddush on the following dates with topics to be announced.

Shul‐Wide Learning Shabbaton will be February 1 & 2. Plans are being formu‐lated now for a Shabbat where we daven together, eat together and study together. Many of our members are learned in a wide variety of Jewish top‐ics and they willingly share their knowl‐edge with us. Emma Miller Bat Mitzvah December 15, 2012 Emma Miller is an honors student at Hal‐sey Junior High School. She spends part of her summers at the Junior National Young Leadership Conference and has traveled to Washington, D.C., and Bos‐ton. She has made friends with students from all across the country. Emma is an

avid reader (Harry Potter, anyone?) and enjoys Miyazaki films. She loves cupcakes. In addition, Emma is a wonderful art‐ist and designed her Bat Mitzvah invitations. She would like to study animation. Most important to her are her family and friends and her guinea pig, Fluffernutter.

Gladys works in produc‐tion for Universal Pictures in New York. She graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She is a daughter of Marlene Anteby and Jack Silvera (deceased) of Brooklyn, NY. Geoffrey is the Head of Business Development & Partnerships for Moveline in New York, a TechStars NYC company. Sisterhood Trip to Canstruction 2012

Join us on Sunday, November 11 at noon at the World Financial Center, Manhattan, to see what artists and ar‐chitects create when they put their cans together to end hun‐ger.

Over 100,000 cans of food will be trans‐formed into 26 fanci‐ful, gravity‐defying sculptures through‐out the World Finan‐cial Center complex in Lower Manhattan before they are donated to help feed hungry New Yorkers in need during the Thanksgiving season.

An annual art show, design competition, and food drive all rolled into one, Canstruction raises hunger awareness by challenging teams of architects and engineers to create larger‐than‐life pop art masterpieces made entirely out of unopened cans of food. The eye‐popping results will be displayed from Nov.10 through 21 before being donated to City Harvest for delivery to local community food programs.

While admission is free, visitors to the exhibit are encouraged to support the cause by contributing high a can or two non‐perishable foods, such as tuna, beans, and canned vegetables.

Men’s Club L'Shanah Tovah!

Men's Club is off and running for an exciting year. We — with Sis‐terhood — started by decorating the FHJC Sukkah, and we sent our guys out to help FHJC congregants who

needed help putting up their home suk‐kahs. As I write this, we are looking for‐ward to our October 21 annual bike and train ride in beautiful Jim Thorpe, PA. and hoping that the event will be well attended and that everyone will have a wonderful time.

November 3rd is our beer‐tasting evening with guest presenter Robert LeBoyer, an accomplished home brewer and beer ex‐pert. Robert will be talking about varieties of beer and beer pairings. On December 1, Men's Club and Sisterhood will be spon‐

soring our first family Havdalah service followed by a game and movie night.

We hope you don't miss the November 2 deadline to register as a performer in this year's Coffee House. Men's Club again is looking forward to closing the show with a rousing number. We look forward to the Federation of Jewish Men's Club participa‐tion in this song as well.

Other events in the coming year: World Wide Wrap; Hearing Men's Voices; S3 Scotch, Steak, Soda; Federation of Jewish Men's Club Regional Dinner; and New Yorkers Tour New York. We are looking forward to a great year and hope to see you at these events.

With the Fall chagim behind us, let me start by thanking all those who shared a minute or two decorating this year’s FHJC sukkah. I asked for your help and you provided it. Again, thank you.

Our next Sisterhood program will be an examination of The Invisible Bridge, by acclaimed, first‐time novelist Julie Or‐ringer, on Tuesday, November 13. Plan on joining us for what I’m sure will be an engaging and emotional discussion of this sweeping story set in Paris, Hungary and the labor camps of 1930s Europe.

This year’s Torah Fund Campaign, which provides scholarships to Jewish Theologi‐cal Seminary students, is in full swing, and it’s a pleasure to see so many supportive shul members wearing pins! There are many other ways you may contribute to this worthy campaign. Miriam Chait and Shirley Rossman‐Zucker will be delighted to share them with you.

Our annual Torah Fund Woman of Achievement event will be Sunday, De‐cember 2, when we honor Ruth Shulim, for her tireless efforts leading FHJC’s Sis‐terhood for over twenty years. Your per‐sonal invitation should be arriving, via the mail, shortly, and Miriam, Shirley and I look forward to seeing you at this impor‐tant fund‐raising event!

Another exciting program to anticipate will be an after Kiddush shiur with Shira Eliaser, niece of Center member Ellen Cogan, on Shabbat Vayechi, December 29. Shira is known for insightful summer Torah study groups in Chicago, so it will be our pleasure to host her at FHJC this winter.
