Our Pirate Assembly Everyone in our class dressed up as Pirates. We sang songs and did speeches. These are our favourite parts: We loved talking on the microphone We loved lining up on the stage because we were up high. We got to stand up on the stage too! We liked it on the stage because we weren‘t squashed. I liked it when we changed over and had a turn on the chairs. We liked it on the stage—it was comfy! We loved it and we hope you did too! We were lucky because Book Week Dress-up Day was on the same day as our Assembly. We got dressed up twice! We had fun at the parade and enjoyed the dances. In class we have been working hard and trying our best. In Maths we have been practicing writing our numbers, doing Addition and Take-away sums. We have different groups for Guided Reading. We read our books and do work about it. For writing we have been improving all the time. We love Writing! Our handwriting is getting better and better. Mrs Watson is very proud of us! At the moment we have some little silkworms in our class. They have hatched out of their eggs. Did you know they only eat Mulberry leaves. They eat and eat and eat and grow and grow and grow! This is some of the comments from the Year 2‘s about their assembly:

Georgia: At our Assembly, I was a Pirate. It was fun. This is what I had to

say: ―Shiver me timbers, those pirates sure sound useless.‖

Tegan: Last Friday it was our Assembly and I got to talk on the microphone.

It was fun talking on the microphone. I got to sit at the back part of the stage

and I sat next to Tait and Courtney.

Reece: On our Assembly Day we dressed up as Pirates. It was fun. I had a

fake moustache. I liked being on the stage and talking on the microphone.

Maddi: On our Assembly I enjoyed it. We sang ‗Dave and the Pirate‘. We swapped sides and

I got on the chair.

Joel: We had a Pirate Assembly. It was fun. I had a good time. I liked the swap over. We

sang songs. I got to talk on the microphone. I was excited. It was fun. I had a pirate

costume on that Friday!

Yakamia 2014 Leavers

At NASHS the Year 7 and 8 students have just

completed their first semester at high school.

Students have enjoyed a varied curriculum,

including Maths, English, Science, Humanities,

Japanese, Italian, Cooking, Craft, Drama,

Woodwork and Health and Physical Education.

The Year 7 and 8 students have also had the

chance to participate in a number of

extracurricular activities throughout the

semester. Highlights have been the orientation

camp at Big Grove, the Year 7/8 social and our

reward trip to the bowling alley.

As a group, the Year 7‘s at NASHS really enjoy

their sport. Students have had the opportunity to

compete in swimming, cross country running,

netball, soccer, hockey and football at an

interschool level. NASHS also sent a number of

Year 7 and 8 students to Perth this year with the

NASHS team to compete in the State Schools

Cross Country Championship.

In 2016, 50 of our current Year 7 students will

travel to Sydney and Canberra as Year 8‘s to take

in some iconic Australian landmarks and

historically significant sites. Needless to say,

students are already very excited about this trip

that is set to become an annual event.

Ex Yakamia students Chloe D‘Addario, Taleah

Ugle, Kali Haese, Georgia Crosby, Lily-Rose Hill

and Imani Officer have had a fantastic start to

high school. Their achievements in semester one

place them in the top ten students at NASHS in

Bonny’s Special Hair Cut

Bonny Gardiner, a Year 3 student, in Room 16, recently had her haircut for a very special

reason.

In her own words, ― I had a haircut to help other children who have lost their own hair,

maybe through illness or because of a treatment for

illness. I am happy that I cut off my long hair and I

sent it to people who are going to make a real wig

out of it. The hair had to be 30cm long and mine was

32cm long. I am really pleased that I can make

another child happy!‖

Well done Bonny. Bonny was helping the Princess

Charlotte Alopecia Program. For more information

Unplug and Play When kids swap screen time for active play they benefit

from healthier growth and development. Kids need at

least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every

day ; and they should limit TV, computer and electronic

games for entertainment to two hours per day.

There are lots of ways for children and families to unplug

from their screens and start playing. Below are some

suggestions.

Remove TV‘s, computers and other electronic media

from bedrooms

Try taking reading or work outside. This will entice

children to move outside with you.

Write down how much time you and your kids spend

on TV, computer and electronic games. Set a weekly

reward for limiting screen time.

Other parents have this problem –talk to them about

how they manage screen time.

Organise a neighbourhood roster so that you can take

turns to supervise the kids while they play at the local

park.

Make a checklist of things your children have to get done

before they use electronic media (e.g. homework, chores,

walking the dog).

ACWE Family Concert

The Albany City Wind Ensemble takes to the stage of the Albany Entertainment Centre on 5

th and 6

th of

September for its gala variety concert „G‟Day Australia‟.

The 40-piece wind ensemble will be joined by over 150 dancers, artists, actors, vocal soloists and a mass choir for a celebration of all things Australian. With well-loved songs such as The Man from Snowy River, Land Down Under and Waltzing Matilda, the concert will pay tribute to our musical heritage and the iconic songs that have shaped our nation.

This fast-paced, emotionally-charged and visually captivating variety show will appeal to the whole family. Take a musical journey from past to present as you remember songs from the war years, sing along to popular Australian classics and enjoy contemporary Australian music from today.

“The performance will be an amazing spectacular showcase of talent from the Albany and Great Southern community,” said Artistic Director Sue Findlay.

BEDWETTING (ENURESIS) PROGRAM

Do you have a child who wets the bed and would like to be dry? Bedwetting is a common childhood prob-lem and it can be resolved. Children will not necessarily „grow out of it‟ and left untreated, bedwetting can continue into adulthood.

In the past 30 years, 1000‟s of WA children have become dry through the Princess Margaret Hospital‟s (PMH) enuresis program. This program is available locally through the Great Southern Population Health (Community Health) and provided by school health nurses.

The enuresis program is available for your child if:

They are aged 6 years to 13years but not older than 13 and 9 months

Have 2 or more night occurrences of a wet bed in a week

Child wants to become dry

Please contact Great Southern Population Health on 98427500 or alternatively contact the Community School nurse Karen on 98427564 for more information/referral pack.
