Tips on Preparing your Property

Winter is here! Here are some tips to help you keep warm.

Temperature control

Heat the room you’re using to between 20-22 degrees – this will keep the room comfortable but also keep your electricity use down. Open the curtains to let in the sun’s rays (if there are any!) during the day – this is especially effective for North Facing properties. Make sure to close the curtains again when the sun disappears for that extra layer of insulation.

Blanket time

Throw rugs draped over the couch can be a great looking accessory in your living area, plus they have the added benefit of keeping you warm for those cosy movie nights in!

Brr, cold floors

Timber & tiled floors look great, but during winter they can get pretty cold underfoot! Now is the perfect time to bust out a rug to reduce the chill – we love bold colours & prints to brighten the space!

Pop-up shops

Tuggeranong Park Upgrade Tuggeranong Community Festival – a focus on young people

Temporary pop-up businesses could help enliven Tuggeranong Town Centre, according to Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann. While the Federal Government’s commitment to keep the Department of Social Services in the region was good news, she said more needed to be done to give the centre a new lease on life. “It is a way of testing the market without committing to a long-term lease,’’ she said. ‘‘The beauty of the pop-up notion is there are a lot of people with creative ideas and retail concepts.” Ms Brodtmann said leasing vacant office space could complement longer term projects, such as her desire to see more residential development near Anketell Street.Read more: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/popup-shops-could-boost-struggling-tuggeranong-town-centre-member-for-canberra-gai-brodtmann-says-20140701-zsrrk.html

The suburb of Bonython is named after Sir John Bonython, a newspaper owner, politician & philanthropist. He was the sole proprietor & editor of the Adelaide Advertiser. After Federation he became involved in politics & was a member of the first & second Federal Parliaments. He was active in altruistic causes, particularly with donations towards educational institutions, & also donated £100,000 towards the cost of completing Parliament House, Adelaide.

The suburb name “Bonython” was gazetted on 17 October 1986.

Mr Fluffy spread throughout Canberra

Downsizers to benefit from cuts to stamp duty

Deadly Mr Fluffy asbestos was spread throughout more than 70 Canberra suburbs in the 1970s & the scourge was concentrated most heavily in Curtin, Pearce & Kambah, new information shows. The ACT Government has for the first time revealed the full extent of the Mr Fluffy footprint across the territory. The ACT Government has now revealed the number of houses per suburb that were found to contain the deadly loose-fill amosite asbestos during the survey carried out in the late 1980s. The data shows that there were at least 41 more homes on the list with Mr Fluffy asbestos than the 1049 that were remediated following the survey. A spokesperson for Workplace Safety Minister Simon Corbell said the list of houses had been taken from the list originally surveyed for loose-fill asbestos. He said the list of 1049 houses relates to the number of houses that were identified for the purposes of the 2014 mail-out as having been part of the program. There were 103 homes identified in the Tuggeranong suburb followed by 43 in Curtin & 40 in Pearce. Other suburbs affected in Tuggeranong were Wanniassa (23) & Monash (<5). Households affected by Canberra’s deadly Mr Fluffy asbestos crisis will receive immediate financial assistance from the ACT Government including payments of up to $10,000, with an additional $2000 for each dependent child.

The ACT Government is set to broaden a stamp duty concession scheme aimed at pensioners to all home buyers aged over 60, giving them access to huge cuts. The “Over 60s Home Bonus” will replace the Pensioner Duty Concession Scheme following the delivery of the 2014-15 ACT budget next week. From next Wednesday, eligible downsizers will pay as little as $20 for stamp duty for a property worth less than $595,000, & will receive discounts on the duty for homes valued up to $765,000. Unlike other first home owner assistance programs, limited to new properties, the discounts will apply for all homes in the territory. The ACT Government will take a predicted hit of $5.3 million in revenue over the next two years as a result of the reduction in stamp duty paid by eligible home buyers. ACT Treasurer Andrew Barr has also confirmed the government will continue the cuts to stamp duty for all home buyers proposed under the territory’s staged tax reform. The pensioner scheme was initiated in 2008 to provide incentives to pensioners who found stamp duty an impediment to downsizing. It has not had the desired effect on encouraging downsizing in the territory with, on average, less than 80 people accessing the scheme each year. He said there would be a two-year sunset clause on the expanded scheme & the government would reassess it at that time.
