Thank you for participating in the Huntington

Arts Council's Journey Program. With Journey –

students and teachers will be developing literacy,

making connections and learning to exhibit

empathy for others in the community.

This catalog contains a list of presentations that

have been preapproved for use of JOURNEY

funds. Enclosed you will find brief descriptions

and fee structures for these programs. This

information may be subject to change. If you

have any questions or would like to book an artist

through the JOURNEY Program, please contact

the Arts-in-Education Coordinator at

In order to make this directory as user-friendly as

possible, the contents herein are listed by culture

and art form. The JOURNEY Program Visiting Artist request Form can be found on the next page to help

teachers, PTA members and school administrators with their requests. Filling out this form prior to

speaking with the Arts-in-Education Coordinator will expedite the booking process.

Five vibrant performers celebrate the traditional culture, music, and dances of Guinea.

Led by Sidiki Conde, who lost the use of his legs at age 14. They demonstrate the

importance of overcoming any obstacle and embracing the world's diversity and

African Adventure Tales Crabgrass Puppet Theatre

Two funny folktales from Africa come to life with stunning puppetry, spectacular

scenery, and infectious music. In "Koi and the Kola Nuts," the young son of a chief sets

out on a wonderful journey in search of fortune, carrying only a sack of kola nuts. His

kindness to the creatures he meets is rewarded when their help saves his life! And in

"Anansi the Spider," we meet one of the most hilarious trickster characters in world

In our electronic age, Charlotte Blake Alston, accompanied by thumb piano, djembe or

21-string kora, does what stories have achieved for thousands of years, engage the

imagination, underscore human commonalities and reiterate life lessons. Drawing on

sources of stories, songs, games and rhythmic elements of the African and African

American oral traditions, programs are geared to each age group.

"Fire on the Mountain"- Four person musical production of Ethiopian folk tale.

A classic African folktale is given new life as a spirited four person musical theatre

production inspired by award winning children’s author Jane Kurtz. Journey with

Alemayu, a young shepherd boy, through the vast mountains as he searches for his

sister and learns life’s lessons of character, honesty, courage and love. The rich cultural

heritage of this African region influences the music, staging, costuming and scenery in

Michael Fairchild Audio Visual workshop

Grades 3-12

African Genesis - Photographer and videographer Michael Fairchild will present his

DVD “African Genesis”. Michael will investigate the ties of the Samburu and Maasai

people with their ancient ancestors. Also, covered will be the baby elephant orphanage

on the outskirts of Nairobi and the annual 1800-mile wildebeest migration, which

sweeps through Kenya's Maasai Mara. Michael’s photographs have appeared with the

Sierra Club, National Geographic, Time Life and international photo corporations. He

will lead students in discussions about the people and cultures he has found in this

travels and about his career as a photographer.

Fee: $550 per day – up to five 45 minute presentations

Mohamed Ahamok & Andrea Wozny Music, Storytelling

Grades K-12

Program educates students about the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara desert

through live musical performance, storytelling, and photo/video presentation on the

culture. Active participation through discussions on music, arts, food, lifestyle,

language, and value system of the Tuareg people. Optional tea making demonstration

available.

An exciting program of Brazilian and African dances, music, and song, featuring

capoeira. Incorporates the speed and agility of martial arts dancing and acrobatics while

teaching a philosophy of resolving conflict without the use of force. Assembly programs

Nego Gato Afro-Brazillian Music and Dance Music and Dance

"Living History of African Culture in Brazil"-Performance of Folkloric Music and Dance.

Includes live percussion, the Dances of Nature, the martial dances of Maculele and

Students are taught by professional textile designer in a creative hands-on workshop in

color theory and textile design. The Chinese secret of the silkworm and the

cultivation/production of silk fabric will be discussed. School wide banners, individual

Audio Visual Workshop

“Myanmar-A Land Lost in Time and the Ancient Kingdoms of Southeast Asia”

- Photographer and videographer Michael Fairchild will present his DVD of his work

and lead inquires and discussions about Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

Some of the topics covered: How do you document people naturally in place where no

one speaks your language? What are the challenges of dealing with custom's

inspections and logistics? The rise and fall of empires, how the Khmer kingdom which

once dominated most of Southeast Asia saw inevitable decline due to changes in

climate. What are the implications for modern empires?

Fee: $550 per day – 60 minute presentation – for assembly or classroom workshop.

"A Taste of Australia"-Journey into the fascinating world of the Australian Aborigines,

learn about their unique relationship with the land, see and listen to the Didgeridoo,

and try your hand at Aboriginal dot painting.

Dynamic show of rhythmic, high energy grooves from Brazil and the fife and drum

blues traditions of Mississippi. Student participation. American and Latin American

culture and history in a way that makes students move to the beat!

CARIBBEAN CULTURE

Casplash Interactive Assembly for Steelpan Band Music performance and workshop

Grades k-12

Band director Rudyard Crichlow and the Casplash Steepan Band will lead students

through the history of this instrument of national pride for Republic of Trinidad and

Tobago. Students will see images of the instruments start as a recycled waste to

handcrafted instrument, participate in a musical number and learn how to make

melodies and why the Steelpan is not a percussion instrument.

Fee: $1,800 for a 4 person band. Please inquire for in classroom workshops.

Costa Rica, Model of Conservation - Photographer and videographer Michael Fairchild

will present his DVD “Costa Rica, Model of Conservation”. Students will be introduced

to the people, culture, government, terrain, and ecology of this fascinating Central

American country that has coastline on both the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans. The

views will see the festivals in progress, the diverse faces, the fragile beauty of Costa

Chen and Dancers (H.T.Dance Company) Dance, martial arts, immigration programs

Grades K-12

Traditional Arts Workshop (90 min.) Chinese calligraphy and traditional ribbon dance.

Choreography Workshop (60 min.) students create their own dances with company

members. "Eight Strokes and the Moving Word" presents works by H.T. Chen, video

Sung-Sook Setton Chinese Calligraphy & Brush Painting

Grades 3-12

Chinese calligraphy and brush painting workshops. Students work closely with this

master brush painter right in classroom or art studio. Artist engages students in

discussion of properties of paper, ink, water and simple philosophy

of Chinese painting technique. Students as young as 3rd grade learn to create in this

great tradition and will bring home multiple artworks and understanding of the

Artistry on Ceramic Tile

Grades K-12

Creative hands-on workshop in tile production, designing, and kiln firing. Students

execute designs in underglaze colors on bisque. All tiles are fired and the finished mural

or character signs are suitable for hanging on school walls. Professional

mounting/framing included. Choice of artist designs or murals are available on request.

INDIAN CULTURE

Puneeta Mittal Block Ink Printing; Pottery

Grades 3-12

Artist Puneeta Mittal painter and exhibiting ceramic artist will discuss the ancient art of

Indian Block Printing and current trends in modern fashion/textile design and how

these trends relate back to patterns Indian designer have been using for centuries. The

hands on workshop will demonstrate simple solutions to create your own stamp for

block printing on fabric. The printing can be a simple single color stamping or with use

of multiple stamps with more complicated multicolor designs. The same technique can

be applied to other mediums such as, paper, clay, leather, metal,etc. Other workshops

being offered are:

Satya Pradeep (Nritya Saagaram Dance Academy)

Dance

Grades 1-12

Classical Indian dance, using a universal language of gestures, story telling, mime and

footwork. Stressing the importance of dance as a form of artistic expression and

educating children from grades 1-12 about the similarities and differences between

Indian and Western styles of dance. Students get opportunities to exhibit what they

have learned during the interactive session. The Indian dance form (which is over 2,000

years old) teaches them the importance of discipline, focus, and devotion.

Grades K-12

All programs are customized for grade and occasion with optimum interactivity

included. Subjects include History, Music, Literature, Fashion, Cuisine and other

Audio Visual workshop

Grades 6-12

“Eternal India“ Photographer Michael Fairchild has created a high definition program

about the most mysterious and diverse country in the world. "Eternal

(India Culture continued…)

India" is a collaborative effort with his daughter Marnie who spent over 3 months

studying Hindi and community development in Jaipur and the city of Varanasi on the

sacred Ganges River. This fully narrated program explores some of the most fabulous

palaces and fortresses of the Moghul dynasty, including the Taj Mahal. Fairchild’s

camera captures life in India's rural villages, while providing an affectionate portrait of

India's people. Follow up discussion often focuses on standard of living, wildlife

management, religious topics, the Untouchables, as well as the economic significance of

the world’s most populous democracy. Steve Gorn, a noted performer and composer of

Indian and African music created an original music score for this production.

Fee: $550/day up to five 45 minute presentations.

Surapsari (Asian Dance & Theatre by Surapsari)

Indian Storytelling Dance and Dance-theatre

Grades K-12

“Dancing the Universe: Earth & Space Science through Indian Dance” - Explore the earth

and space through the 2000 year old Indian storytelling dance, executed with ever

changing facial expressions, hand gestures called mudra, stylized movements, and

exquisite poses. The student audience will learn about the solar system and four

spheres of the earth, while being entertained by lively storytelling dance accompanied

with visually stunning costume and recorded Carnatic music from south India. There

will be opportunities for the audience members to participate in Indian dance-drama

that explores earth and space science subjects, as well as learning mudra, dance poses,

and movements. This program promotes knowledge in Science, Social studies, Theatre,

Music, Dance, and Visual arts.

“Indus: Stories from Ancient India”- Surapsari presents the world of Hindu myths and

“Ramayana: Balinese Shadow Puppet Theatre” – Surapsari takes the audience to the

mythological kingdom in the Ramayana, the great Hindu epic, through magical

Balinese shadow puppet play accompanied with recorded traditional Gamelan music

and chant. The students will learn about how improvisational sound, background

music, props, and certain techniques of maneuvering puppets create dramatic effects.

They will also learn about the science of light and shadow and will be introduced to

different styles of shadow puppets from various parts of Asia. At Surapsari’s Shadow

Puppet Workshop, the students learn how to make a shadow puppet with movable

parts and try out their puppets with the screen and light. This program promotes

knowledge in Science, Theatre, Music, and Visual arts. Mathematics standards can also

be incorporate for K-2 students upon request.

“Mask Dance & Theatre from Bali (solo or duo performance)”- The students will meet

a variety of masked characters who dance in individually stylized manners with some

improvisation. Surapsari will reveal cultural values and beliefs of Balinese people that

are expressed through the masks and storyline of dance drama. The students will have

opportunities to try dance masks and fans, practice unique eye movement called seledet,

and take a role in mask dance-drama. This program promotes knowledge in Social

child and how her interested in this art form turned into a career as a touring Wayang

“Multicultural mask making program” Ceramic workshop using many ceramic

techniques, we will create a range of faces/expressions that will relate to some aspect of

the student reality today or use the past to say something about an aspect of your life or

your own personal emotions. Masks have been worn from Ancient times to modern

day. Primitive tribes wore mask as part of their ritual, festival, ceremonies and dances.

The mask was thought to give super natural powers to wearers. Ie.Nigerian, pre-

Columbian, Japanese/ Kabuki, Native American. Explore/discuss create, patterns,

designs, to express feelings, exaggerate facial proportions and features intrinsic to their

culture, as well as, animal imagery/metaphor. We will explore the cultural role of the
