International Student Department Term 2 2014 At Bayfield High School we aim to create a supportive and friendly environment for all of our students, regardless of whether their family live just across the road or on the other side of the world. This year we are delighted to have four International Prefects – two Kiwi students and two from overseas. These students are keen to find ways of helping our international students integrate well into the school community, and are organising events and activities to assist with this. Principal - Judith Forbes 2013 was a very successful year academically for our International students. We had 20 students sitting NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance with 19 students gaining this qualification, 1 Endorsed with excellence and 5 were endorsed with merit. This is a tremendous result and we are proud to have supported the students in achieving their academic goals. This carries on a proud tradition of excellence from 2012 where 24 International students gained University Entrance. Our 2014 year began with a roll of approximately 500, including 40 International students representing 10 countries from around the world. In Term 2 we have welcomed 7 new students, 3 from Japan, 3 from China and 1 from France. Lake Te Anau On our annual trip to Fiordland in March, where we experienced great weather and enjoyed the company of a group of 12 wonderful International Students. We experienced the unique Glow Worm Caves, the Bird sanctuary housing the rare Pukeko, Kaka and Takahe in Te Anau and a boat excursion in Milford Sound taking in the sights of the Sound, its amazing peaks and waterfalls, and a visit to the underwater observatory.

Lake Te Anau

On our annual trip to Fiordland in March, where we experienced great weather and enjoyed the company of a group of 12 wonderful International Students.

Students in Te Anau Stunning Mitre Peak Milford SoundMost of our students have joined in extracurricular activities that are available here at school and outside school. We have a wide range of winter sports beginning in May and there are also opportunities in our performing arts area. This year’s production is ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and performances begin this week. This year we have Weibke Oberdorf singing and Miwako Takashima dancing in the show and students supporting as crew backstage with set, wardrobe and makeup. Students are always encouraged to take advantage of the extra opportunities this school has to offer. Ice skating has become a very popular activity for our students with an Olympic size Ice arena in our local area. Surfing is another popular activity with lessons and equipment hire available at our local beaches.

Our Outdoor Education classes provide a variety of opportunities for students to engage in many outdoor pursuits such as kayaking and sailing, mounting biking and abseiling, skiing and tramping. Students learn theory and develop confidence with practical skills in each discipline.

One student who has managed to involve herself in a wide range of areas is Franka Fiedler who is pictured below with her Multi-sport team, which also includes Enrico da Silva. Over the past term Franka had been part of a female team of 4 who raced and won the Central Otago rail trail race. She has competed in the Otago/Southland Triathlons champs in Cromwell and the 75km Gutbuster race to Bannockburn. She has represented the school in volleyball and is currently training for the 95km Contact Energy mountain-bike race around Lake Hawea. On top of this she has been awarded commendations for her academic work. Well done for making the most of your opportunities here in New Zealand Franka!

Bayfield Multisport team 2014 in Central OtagoThe athletic sports was another great day out of the classroom for our students. While some ran jumped, and threw, others watched and cheered on their classmates. Congratulations to all those who participated and achieved points for their respective houses. Outstanding achievers were once again Franka Fiedler who was the third senior girl overall champion, and Theresa Lind who excelled in the long and triple jumps. Theresa jumped her way to represent Bayfield at the Otago Athletics meet.

Trip to Tekapo and Mt Cook

Mt Cook by Our Gifted and Passionate Photographer Tony Tsui

14 International students accompanied us on the annual trip to Tekapo and Mt Cook. The Weather always plays such a huge part in the enjoyment of this trip but look how Mt Cook revealed itself (above). To our disappointment the weather prevented us from viewing the stars at the Mt John Observatory in Tekapo on Thursday but what a treat was install for those night owls and early birds in Mt Cook on Friday night. (See the amazing photo below of the stars taken around midnight) The
