Haryana : History

The glorious history of Haryana starts fromVedic period. This state is known as the birthplace of mythological Bharat dynasty withwhose nomenclature the name of this country‘Bharat’ is associated. The battle field for warbetween Kauravas and Pandavas, the Kurukshetra,is situated in Haryana. Prior to the arrival ofMuslims in India and making Delhi the capital ofIndia, Haryana played a major role in the historyof India. After that Haryana became the part ofDelhi. Prior to the first war of independence in1857 Haryana was anonymous. After crushing therebellion of 1857 the British administration re-established themselves and the Nawabs of Jhajjarand Bahadurgarh, the ruler of Ballabhgarh andRao Tula Ram of Rewari were dethroned and theirterritories were either merged with areas underBritish rule or were transferred to rulers of Patiala,Nabha and Jind. Thus, Haryana became the part ofPunjab and on 1st Nov., 1966 after the reorganisa-tion of Punjab, Haryana became the full- fledgedstate of India.

● The description of Haryana is found in Vedicliterature. The excavation of this place provesthat the development of Indus Valleys civili-zation and Mohenjodaro culture took place atthis place.

● There are different views regarding thenomenclature of Haryana. Haryana is eitherfrom Haryali or Hawar (Loot Mar or Robbery)or from Harinathak or Aryana.

● Haryana was formed on 1st Nov., 1966 as anautonomous state of Indian Republic. Prior tothat it was the part of Punjab state.

● 35·18% part of old united Punjab was trans-ferred to Haryana.
