The launch of Spring/Summer’s West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK can always be relied upon to bring a touch of style, glamour and colour to dreary old January, and this morning’s lively and vibrant launch for 2014 was no exception. Ireland’s leading fashion event will not only return for another season, but this year it celebrates a remarkable milestone with 2014 marking its tenth year. Needless to say, hoards of die-hard fashion fans gathered to hear the exciting schedule including celebratory events to mark the tenth year.

Surrounded by ten beautiful models, director of Belfast FASHIONWEEK Cathy Martin, addressed the guests on site at renowned interior designer Kris Turnbull’s chic studio and outlined what we can expect from the landmark event which will take place from 19-23 March across various venues in Belfast.

In terms of the main schedule, local designers and independent boutiques will

MAKING A FASHION SPLASH

kick off the main catwalk shows at the Ulster Museum on Wednesday 19 March with Harrison, Blush, Rachel McKnight, Diamond Dolls in Banbridge, Nor Lisa, CRUISE, Grainne Maher and Larissa Watson all confirmed to take part.

Spring/Summer looks from the high street continue the proceedings on Thursday 20 March, and will see the return of The OUTLET, Banbridge, Benetton, Marks and Spencer, George at Asda and Next, among others. This hugely popular show always sells out quickly so snap up your ticket now to avoid disappointment!

But unlike the main catwalk shows for designers, designer boutiques and the high street stores - which will take place at the Ulster Museum - both the Charity Challenge and Paddy McGurgan’s Make Up Show will be held in Stormont’s iconic Great Hall on Friday 21 March.

Multi-award-winning artist Paddy McGurgan’s stunning creative make up

display will demonstrate some breath-taking and dramatic looks incorporating massive feathered wings and headpieces. As the lead make up artist at FASHIONWEEK since 2005 and a former performer himself, he has choreographed a full production entitled ‘Birds of Paradise’ to wow audiences with a musical, dance and visual spectacular.

The Charity Challenge concept was created by Cathy to bring together ten fashion bloggers or stylists with ten charities and their retail stores to create a collection of ten catwalk-worthy outfits each.

Cathy said: “I can’t wait to see what classic, quirky and vintage ensembles our exceptionally creative stylists will come up with. Actually, we started off with the goal of ten charity partnerships to celebrate our tenth year, but I’m delighted to say we now have twelve. And all the outfits shown on the catwalk as part of the Charity Challenge will be available to buy (via donation) on the night at each charity’s pop up store, so as well as exposing what great finds there are in store at some of these gem shops, we’re hoping that the charities will sell the

entire collections to make some much needed funds.” Cathy, who will fund the Charity Challenge production herself, has supported charity over the years through FASHIONWEEK tying in with Mencap via the Style Sunday event, as well as breast cancer charity Pretty in Pink, which collects donations at all shows.

Cathy said: “I’m so grateful to MLA’s Basil McCrea, Judith Cochrane, Pat Sheehan, Megan Fearon and Chris Lyttle from parties across the board who have supported our application to show at Stormont. We’ve showcased in some wonderful venues over the past nine

years including Belfast’s City Hall, the underground car park at Victoria Square, the old bank in Waring Street, the Ulster Museum and the Grand Opera House’s Baby Grand, so it is nice to find a home at Stormont for this season.”

Although the main catwalk shows draw to a close on Friday, fashion fans are in for a treat at the weekend (quite literally!) as afternoon fashion teas will take place on Saturday 22 March at the sumptuous and decadent

After a busy week and many late nights working, I was in dire need of some TLC and, having spoken with Judith Mulgrew - owner and therapist of Skin Medi-Spa - about Maya, she recommended an appointment, and I have to say it was truly the best way to wind down. I’d had Maya before, just before and then again after giving birth to my daughter Valentina because it is a wonderful treatment for all things reproductive, but as you’ll see, it is being increasingly recognised in spas, alternative therapy and even in traditional medical circles as doing more than that. Judith and her team were trained by Maria Rafferty, who is a recognised expert in fertility massage and alternative reproduction techniques, and both Maria and Judith have also been trained by the Maya Arvigo Institute in South America, where the treatment originates from.

Maya is a technique based on the ancient Central American Mayan tribe’s understanding of the importance of the positioning of the reproductive and digestive organs for pelvic and abdominal health.

Amazing MayaA fabulous treatment that is now being offered at Skin Medi-Spa on Belfast’s Lisburn Road is Arvigo Maya Abdominal Therapy or, as it is more simply known as, Maya Massage, and it has been getting excellent reviews. Here’s my experience.

It is a non-invasive, external deep massage technique for men and women, which improves organ function by relieving congestion, enhancing blood supply and flow, increasing lymphatic drainage and aiding nerve supply to the pelvic and reproductive organs.

It is best known for the correction of the prolapsed, fallen, or tilted uterus, and for the relief of many common digestive disorders. At the core of this technique for women is the emphasis on the positioning of the uterus, which can lead to a wide range of gynaecological disorders including infertility.

Thankfully this wasn’t one of my issues, but the massage is also know to aid relaxation and can help to achieve a more emotional and spiritual connection to the reproductive area, by helping women to connect with their femininity and increase fertility. The technique has also been found helpful for chronic stomach problems such as indigestion and constipation, as well as difficult menopause, endometriosis, headaches, dizziness and PMS, among other things. But as I found, it is a great way to detox and relax yourself too.

The whole treatment lasted 1hour 30 minutes; after a short consultation, my therapist Mary began by preparing my whole body starting with a head, shoulder, back and neck massage followed by reflexology on my feet to relax and open up my body to the abdominal massage that was to follow. She then went on

Page 17: Ulster Life February 2014

SpaSleuth

1 5

to massage my stomach area using techniques to restore the body to its natural balance by correcting the position of any of my organs that had shifted, restricting the flow of blood, lymph, nerve and chi energy. I absolutely adored the massage. I felt a connection beyond the tactile touch of the therapist and really felt that I stood

taller afterwards, whatever she did! I had to ask Mary afterwards about the deep pulsating sensation I felt as she seemed to move things around and she explained that the pulses were caused by tension being released from abdominal muscles – the muscles we tend to store stress and anxiety in.

In short, I felt like I floated

out of the spa and really loved the treatment and my therapist. I would very highly recommend this to any female, but in particular anyone suffering from painful periods, PMT, endometriosis, and those going through fertility issues.

FORMER winners of the legendary Miss Northern Ireland contest joined event organiser Alison Clarke and guests on board the beautifully restored Nomadic Belfast to officially launch the 2014 Open + Direct Miss Northern Ireland contest today, Thursday 23rd January 2014.

The contest which is now in its 28th year, organised by ACA Models, will see hundreds of young ladies compete for the coveted Open + Direct Miss Northern Ireland title in a series of heats that will take place in venues across the province this Spring, starting on 27th February at 21 Social, Belfast and finishing on 27th April at Betty Blacks, Bangor.

Contest organiser Alison Clarke welcomed 2014 hopefuls and former winners to the launch event, she said: “It was wonderful to launch the contest alongside our headline sponsor Open + Direct on board the beautiful Nomadic Belfast, which has been restored to her original glory. Over the years the Miss Northern Ireland contest has grown in stature so we wanted this year’s launch to be somewhere meaningful that represented the best of Northern Ireland.

“Our contest is all about finding talented young women, who will be judged not only on their appearance but

also on their presence, self expression, intelligence and poise. We were overwhelmed by the number and calibre of the girls who graced our contest last year and as such, we have introduced an extra heat to accommodate them.

“The winner will become an ambassador for Northern Ireland at events far and wide during 2014, so it’s vital they have a great personality too!”

clothes, beauty treatments and products, basically everything a girl could ever wish for.

“The title has given me the chance to travel as far as Indonesia to take part in the Miss World contest and meet people I wouldn’t have otherwise met. The contest is a great opportunity for local girls to network, meet new people and gain confidence.”

James Nesbitt, Fiona Phillips and Sarah Travers are among the stars taking part in ‘Forget Me Not’ The Patsy Duffy Memorial Benefit, taking place on 07 March at Titanic Belfast. The gala ball aims to raise £50,000, the most ever raised on one evening for Alzheimer’s in Northern Ireland, and build awareness about this often misunderstood disease.

James, Fiona and Sarah have each been personally affected by the devastation of dementia, having recently lost a parent, and in the case of Fiona Phillips, both parents, to the disease. They will join with the Duffy family, who have organised this event in memory of their beloved husband and father Patsy Duffy, to make this one of the most special nights in the Northern Ireland social and charity calendar. Patsy Duffy

Foget Me Not..!Stars touched by dementia set to host the glittering ‘Forget Me Not’ gala ball in Titanic Belfast

from Magherafelt passed away in 2012, at the age of just 57 from early-onset dementia. His wife, Janette and four daughters share a common purpose with the event’s hosts, to turn their personal tragedies into something positive, raising awareness and much needed funds to help find a cure.

James Nesbitt, who will be taking time out of his busy filming schedule in LA to be here for the event, stated: “I am honoured to be part of the Forget Me Not Benefit, an important event to raise money and hope towards finding a cure for Alzheimer’s. Their goal of raising £50,000, the most ever raised in Northern Ireland in one night, will go a long way to give scientists the tools to turn dementia into a curable condition. With the right backing, we can fight this terrible disease.”

Looking ahead to the evening, Patsy’s wife, Janette Duffy wanted to thank those who have supported the event and is confident that those attending will have a night to remember. “Myself and the girls have been overwhelmed and are so thankful for the support we have received since launching in September. It’s a testament to the man Patsy was and the desire across NI to do something about this disease that the tables are completely sold out. We look forward to sharing what is set to be a truly unforgettable evening with such a fantastic group of kind and generous people. Our family and friends, businesses from across NI and many whom we don’t know personally whose lives like ours have been affected by this cruel disease, will come together on that evening to fight dementia.

We are just putting the finishing touches to the plans for the night, and we promise that our guests will not be disappointed. I know it will be a fitting tribute to Patsy, who would have truly enjoyed an evening like this, full of great food, music, dancing and laughter.”

The spectacular Titanic Belfast is the setting for this

special event. Guests will be welcomed by a Champagne reception overlooking the Titanic Slipways, followed by a specially designed four

course menu, laughs from the world famous Brendan Grace, banter on the floor from Cool FM’s Connor Phillips, a silent auction, a wonderful line up of music culminating with a set from the legendary Red Hot Roosters and lots of surprises for guests throughout the night. The dress code is stipulated as ‘Full Length & Fabulous’, which suggests a glittering evening awaits those lucky enough to be attending. The ball is completely sold out, however donations are very welcome and will be recognised on the evening. Donations can be made at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ForgetMeNotBenefit

Natalie AbusowYou went the furthest in the Miss British Empire competition placing in the top 5 from across the uk. How do you think you got so far? How did it make you feel?

I can’t really say why I got so far in the competition, I assume being polite chatty and as confident in myself as I could helped me get into the top 5. Getting into the top five and winning best swimwear felt amazing, I would never have put myself as a runner to win anything so getting that far helped my confidence in my appearance and ability to speak publicly2 2

Miss British Empire comes to Northern Ireland. This was the first year Miss British Empire ran in Northern Ireland. All of the women that applied were of course beautiful but we were looking for that special something. This year the models were judged not just on looks but also intelligence, elegance, friendliness and determination. Here are the three Northern Ireland winners who went on to attend the final in England.

Jennifer O’DohertyYou came top 7 in all of the UK in the Miss British Empire Competition. How was your Experience while away at the final? What did you learn from your experience?

Whilst away in Weston Super Mare at Miss British Empire my experience was absolutely unforgettable, I had the privilege if meeting lots of new people and making a lot of new friends along the way. The sheer excitement that I had felt throughout my weekend was mind blowing I gained a lot of knowledge. It isn't all about the looks or the shape of your body that counts but what's inside. I got the opportunity to represent the City of Derry at such a prestigious event and most importantly I got to spend the weekend with my mammy who has been supporting right from the beginning. It really giving me a confidence boost and encouraged me to continue on with my modelling career which is very much appreciated!

Tori Loughrey WrayYou won the title miss junior be from all of Ireland. You are officially the youngest ever miss British empire winner. Why do you feel you deserved to win? Are you grateful for your title?

I have learned a lot from Miss British Empire, it helped my confidence and I made a lot of new friends.  At my young age I feel its such a great accomplishment to have already achieved, I cant wait to see were my title leads me. Winning the title will open new doors for me as modeling is all I ever wanted to do.

The spring/summer fashion season is officially in full swing, however here in the chilly UK we still need a little adjusting (and warming up) before we embrace what the new season collections have to offer. With this in mind, this spring trend is right on point for ticking a few style boxes whilst maintaining suitability for our frosty February climate.

The SS14 catwalks revealed an air of elegance and ease as we saw designers such as Daks, Miu Miu and Michael Kors opting to cover up this season; with overcoats, macs and trenches offering a practical yet chic approach to all-important transitional layering.

The traditional tailored trenchcoat is rejuvenated in unforeseen hi-tech fabrics as well as super-soft suedes and rubbers. Anoraks have been given a new cool character, as they adopt a fresh stylish silhouette in oversized

In my line of work, I am so reliant upon my vision, my reading and ultimately my eyes. So needless to say, they are very important to me. My biggest problem was my reading vision really wasn’t great and neither was my distance vision but I had coped by using my contact lenses.

I had considered Laser Eye Treatment for some time, but had never got around to it. However a friend of mine recommended Optilase, facing the City Hall in Belfast, and suggested I should go for a Consultation.

When I heard that the Kamra treatment was exclusive to Optilase in NI and Optilase were the number one provider in Europe and 2nd in the world in terms of completed treatments, I was greatly reassured and this made my decision to visit an easy one. After speaking to Optilase and answering some simple questions, I had booked my Consultation. First step taken then!!

My initial Consultation was around an hour long. So I went along to the Flagship Clinic and Surgery Centre, opposite Belfast’s City Hall. The Clinic was like being at a 5 Star hotel! The staff

were absolutely tremendous and I was immediately completely at ease. Bring it on, I thought!

So, after a coffee, (which might I add, was excellent), I filled out a simple form, and met my Optometrist who would be looking after me for the next hour. He was very reassuring and answered some of my very silly questions. I was completely put at ease.

He explained how the Consultation would proceed and took me for some scans and pictures of my eye. I confessed to doing some homework on the technology that Optilase use and felt very informed and completely reassured throughout the process.

A big thing for me also was the reassurance of the Optilase Lifetime Care Guarantee – basically Optilase look after and treat my vision for the rest of my days, even if I needed to be re-treated further down the line, at no extra cost!

After the scans and eye test, it was time for the big result – and I was absolutely delighted to hear that I was suitable for Treatment. Hurrah!! By now I really wanted it done and I was shown the potential about how good my

vision could be afterwards. I really wanted complete freedom from those cumbersome glasses.

So two weeks later the big day came – and I approached this with some confidence, however I must admit that the day before surgery I was a bit nervous. The morning of surgery I was still a bit anxious but I needn’t have been.

I then met with the Surgeon (for which there is also no fee) Medical Director Dr. Wayne Crewe-Brown. He has performed more than 40,000 of these treatments and he talked me through my different treatment options. I spent over half an hour with Dr Crewe –Brown and felt completely reassured at the end of my Pre-Op. I opted for the KAMRA Treatment, with laser – exactly as the Surgeon had

described and recommended to me. This would give me my near and distance vision and would do away with glasses altogether!

The actual surgery itself was over within minutes and I quickly realised there was no reason for me to have been nervous. The Surgeon was fantastic and talked me through each part of the procedure - the Nursing and Care team were second to none. There was no pain whatsoever during surgery - a question I have been asked by almost everyone I have met since the surgery, as there are so many myths out there about laser eye treatments.

After surgery my eyes were tender initially, a sensation I compared to the experience you have after cutting raw onions. My eyes were watering all the

way home and I had to wear black sunglasses to protect them, although the staff did advise me that I would be light sensitive straight away as my ‘new eyes’ got used to light again.

Following the advice from the team at Optilase I went home and relaxed - when I woke in the morning life had taken on a whole new perspective. Being able to see so clearly without glasses was the strangest feeling ever, absolutely fantastic and I was more than a bit emotional – I don’t mind admitting. My near vision settled and dramatically improved after the next few days.

Just out of habit I even reached for my glasses (trust me; it takes a while before you will break that habit). If I had some advice for anyone out

there who wears specs, get it done – and get it done now! If only I had it done years ago.

My advice? Find out if you can have it done – if you are suitable, find a way to have treatment – it will change your life……I’m glad I did! To book your free consultation contact Optilase on 08000 121 565 or visit www.optilase.co.uk

North West native and radio show host Caroline Fleck is going back to her roots in more ways than one; the former cardiac nurse is embarking on a brand new career with pioneering healthcare company Randox Health, as Health Advisor for the North West region. Caroline (41) says it is about much more than a change of career:

"I'm from the North West and the startling reality is that compared to the rest of Northern Ireland we suffer higher death

rates from respiratory illness, stroke, heart attack and cancer. This is why I am spear heading a campaign to encourage people in the area to be proactive about their health - to take steps to prevent disease, so they do not add to the statistics; regular health checks are the key."

Caroline has teamed up with the Roe Park Resort to establish the first private health screening clinic for the area. The Randox Health Clinic at the Limavady hotel will offer some of the most extensive, blood based health

assessments available anywhere in the world. The service, which is unique in the North West also includes consultations with Randox Health's GPs and nurses, who can advise, treat and refer to specialists if necessary.

Caroline says:"The blood really is the body's

encyclopaedia, almost everything we need to know about our health is there. From just one blood sample we check for illnesses such as diabetes and cardio vascular disease, search for genetic issues, scope for infections, root out fertility problems, even tell you how your health could change in the future."

The former Nurse Fleck should know, she has just had her full body MOT with Randox Health and says it is time to make some improvements:

"I'm a busy, full time working mum - ok so I thought I could do with losing a bit of weight, but I've had no symptoms, no problems, so I assumed everything was fine...I was wrong. My bad cholesterol or LDL is through the roof, this might be because I've just quit smoking, but I also need to take a serious look at my diet. If had kept going, without the early warning from the health check I may have eventually suffered from a stroke or heart disease. Nothing brings it home like seeing it written down in your Randox Health report! It is time to change!"

Caroline is determined to tackle the North West's shocking health statistics one patient at a time, by encouraging people in the area to visit the Randox Health Clinic for screening at the Roe Park Resort.

Local celebrity Caroline Fleck swaps her microphone for a stethoscope in a bid to improve health in the North West.

A load of Coq & Bull

Legendary Belfast restaurateur Nick Price, former proprietor of Nick’s Warehouse, and arguably one of Northern Ireland’s finest chefs has joined forces with The Clandeboye Lodge Hotel to launch a new restaurant called Coq & Bull.

The thriving North Down hotel, located at the edge of the Clandeboye Estate, has invested £500,000 in an extensive refurbishment of the entire ground floor including the reception, lounges and bar area - with the stunning new Coq & Bull Brasserie at its heart. Nick Price, in his first commercial venture since Nick’s Warehouse, has returned to the limelight consulting on the venue’s signature menu and food presentation with Clandeboye Lodge Head Chef Ian Lyttle and his team.

The refurbishment and

rebranding have been delivered in partnership between Belfast Agency Navigator Blue and John-Henry Boyle of Dublin based, 21 Spaces.

The Coq & Bull restaurant is named after the celebrated works of famous witty playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, former owner of Drury Lane Theatre in London, who had family ties to the local area – the adjacent Helen’s Tower is named after his grand-daughter. Sheridan’s wit and yarns were legendary but the name also represents the hotel’s vision of good, honest food – without pretence.

Nick Price commented: “The team at the Clandeboye Lodge really care about food and local produce – their passion for the project really inspired me. When they showed me their plans for the restaurant I felt it

was something I really wanted to be part of. I’m very much looking forward to working with the team at Coq & Bull to create some great dishes.”

Pim Dalm, Managing Director of the Clandeboye Lodge Hotel comments: “We are very excited about 2014 and the launch of our new restaurant - especially having Nick on board. We believe in supporting local businesses and utilising award-winning local produce. Nick insists on the highest standards, an ethos completely in tune with our business philosophy.”

fitness

Welcome to my inaugural fitness and nutrition column! Following on from my previous blog myulsterlife.com/eve-brannon-fitness, each issue I will be sharing my personal experience and journey with you.

Since commencing the blog, the role of exercise and healthy eating has become very important in my life. I’m no longer the girl who is pretty out of shape, munching on-the-run convenience snacks and quick-fix meals, I now accredit clean eating and training regularly to improving my fitness and energy levels, physique and all-round quality of life.

However we all like to enjoy treats and embrace the Christmas festivities. So with January passing, the calorie amnesia has to come to an end and you’re officially out of excuses for polishing off even the reject chocs. But when the season of splurging is over, often you need more than good intentions to start again, right?

The way I see it - you had a bad day, a bad week, maybe you already cheated your New Years resolutions – but there is no better time to start making obvious, yet small changes that matter. Here’s where I started:

• H20: increase it! A least 2 litres a day

• Sugar: avoid ingredients ending in ‘ose’. Track your consumption using mobile apps such as MyFitnessPal. You will be surprised how many sugars consume your diet

• Read the labels! ‘Low Fat’ or ‘Low Cal’ varieties can often

mean they pack a punch in other unhealthy additives

• If it’s sold in a wrapper or has a TV advert it probably isn’t nutritious

• Avoid processed foods; try to stick to foods with less than four ingredients

• Set yourself achievable weekly exercise goals

Body Lab

• Don’t weigh yourself too often; gradual weight loss is a long-term goal

• Allow yourself one splurge a week; you’ll not feel so deprived and are more likely to maintain a balanced diet

• Book in your workouts; you’re more likely to stick to pre-planned exercise

My last little offering (supplied with genuine experience and recommendation) is to take advantage of a FREE TRIAL at BODY VIBES, Lisburn Road, Belfast. As readers of my blog will testify – I am a big believer in Power Plate fitness. This is not a shameless plug (!) I can tell you that over the space of

6 months training at BODY VIBES I managed to completely change my view of exercise and gained the motivation I needed to train regularly and start improving my health overall. Make 2014 YOUR year!

Micky Bartlett, a comedian from Lurgan and resident MC at the Belfast Empire comedy club, is shaping up to be one of the most exciting new comedy prospects this country has produced.

In 2012 Micky supported Patrick Kielty on his tour of Northern Ireland and played venues like the Derry Playhouse and in the Odyssey arena to an audience of over 5000, the result of the performance earned him a slot in the recording of Dave’s One Night Stand in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. Winner of BBC NI’s stand up talent show Find me the Funny, Micky is also a skilled comic actor and appeared as several bizarre and wonderful characters in BBCNI’s Sketchy with Diarmuid Corr. We were delighted to hear that Mickey will be back on our screens this month as he returns as a panellist for the second series of BBC NI’s popular comedy panel show, Monumental which celebrates everything great, good, funny and peculiar about our culture. Mickey will

join the other regular panellists – comedians Jimeoin, Andrew Maxwell and Michael Smiley for another hilarious series hosted by new presenter Jarred Christmas.

Who are you closest to?Probably my sister, she has an ability to be brutally honest with me… and I mean brutally, which is something I really admire. She also has an amazing gift of being able to sneak a carryout into a pub, I admire that even more. What is your earliest memory? The day my mum told me not to watch “IT”, the movie about the killer clown. I was about three and already knew how to work the video. I also thought I was a big boy and could totally handle a movie where a killer clown turns into a massive spider!

What is your biggest fear?Clowns and spiders…

Relaxation is…I love a quiet pub. A quiet pub,

in the afternoon, on a weekday! Having a pint in the afternoon is the one true sign that you have nothing else to do!

What are you best at?I’m the only person I know who can make his “pecs” dance. (Some people would say that I have “moobs” as opposed to pecs) I’ve gotten quite good at it over the years, any song you can think of, my bust can dance along with!

What do you value in a partner?I’ve been single for so long that a pulse and a steady income would do me!

What will shock us?I think my mum can make her pecs dance too. When did you last feel really happy?I got a nerf gun for Christmas. I’m a fully grown man, and it was potentially the best present I’ve ever been given.

What is your biggest regret? When I was nine, I won a talent competition in Santa Ponsa. My talent was dancing like Michael Jackson. I was the only entry in the competition. Honestly there are nights when that still keeps me awake!

What would you change about your life?Apart from watching that bloody clown movie, absolutely nothing.

The Malone Lodge Hotel, a longstanding boutique hotel just off Belfast’s Lisburn Road, recently broadened their repertoire joining Belfast’s growing group of smart Brasseries opening “The Knife and Fork”.

The concept is a simple one – alluded to by the name perhaps. Good food cooked simply with a focus on flavour. My partner and I went on a Thursday night to their “Jazz Night” but were a little underwhelmed when we walked into a quiet dining room. This, however, was due to an error on our behalf as we were over an hour early for the music (woops). So we decided to wait until the music was about to begin before we

The Knife and Fork at Malone Lodge.

ordered our food and instead, perhaps due to the ‘dinner and dancing’ atmosphere we were anticipating, ordered two cocktails.

My Bellini was just peachy (pardon the pun) and my partner’s Strawberry Daiquiri was lovely too – While we were enjoying our cocktails the chef was kind enough to send us down two appetisers of dishes the kitchen were trialling at the time.

The first was a goats’ cheese bon-bon rolled in popping candy and served with pea puree and lightly pickled beetroot. Goats’ cheese and beetroot is always a good combination and the popping candy worked well with the sharp and creamy

cheese. Next we were brought a poussin leg with pumpkin puree and spiced red cabbage. The ‘gamey-ness’ of the poussin worked well with the Winter warmth the cabbage and pumpkin provided.

From the menu I ordered the salt and chilli squid, a culinary classic amongst Belfast starter menus and my partner went for the slightly more novel baby back ribs. My squid was fresh and crispy, cooked to perfection and served with a wonderfully colourful side salad. Mr. Daiquiri’s ribs were tender, moist and falling off the bone and the barbeque sauce was just as it should be – smoky and sweet.

For main course I treated

Page 59: Ulster Life February 2014

UlsterLife

5 7

myself to Fillet Steak with béarnaise sauce, chips and cauliflower cheese. The steak, a ‘Fermanagh Kettle steak’ which I hear is the crème de la crème, was beautiful, charred at the top and beautifully pink in the middle. My chips were crisp and fluffy and the sauce was buttery - what is not to love, simple dishes executed well. The cauliflower cheese was a bit thin on the sauce, however this could be personal preference as I’m used to the stodgy kind of cauliflower cheese and the lighter approach did allow the cauliflower to retain its unique identity as opposed to serving as a vehicle through which copious amounts of butter and cheese can be consumed.

The other half was so enthused by the initial poussin leg we had been treated to that he ordered a whole bird. It was stuffed with pork and lavender, which was actually a winning combination – the salty sweetness of the pork with the floral notes of the lavender was delicious, as opposed to soapy as I was expecting. We washed this down with a bottle of “The Jumper” Sauvignon Blanc, which was light and complimented the plethora of foods we indulged in.

My final comment returns to the background music. Although it wasn’t jazz, rather Spanish flamenco-style guitar music, the music really added a romantic dimension to the

atmosphere. The music was soft and sung in Spanish, allowing to unconsciously engage with the music without becoming distracted from your company, something I imagine would be the case with Jazz. I think what ‘The Knife and Fork” has achieved is a solid venue of good quality food were the focus is on the ingredients – the freshness, seasonality and highest quality and this approach has really paid off. Plus the music and cocktails add a showbiz feel and everything becomes that little bit more special when being enjoyed to a backdrop of live music.

MUSTGET A MUSCATOThis month we’ve been asked to review the Gallo family vineyards Mascato and, having received a bottle to the office pre-Christmas during operation “drink and eat far too much”, I was only too willing to pen my thoughts.

In fairness during the colder winter months a nice bottle of room temperature red normally does it for me, however, I really had no idea what to expect from the much hyped and New York chic Muscato, so off came the cap to a nicely chilled bottle and I was, to coin an all too often used phrase, pleasantly surprised.

It isn’t a wine I’d recommend alongside food of any description as it’s quite sweet, dare I say it maybe even tastes more like a refreshing alcopop than your starndard Sav Blanc. However, my Gallo press notes tell me it works well with spicy food which does make sense once you’ve tasted it. I would agree that it’s an enjoyable drink and at RRP £6.79 well priced too. Definitely more of a summer BBQ tipple or for a girly night in. Its soft crisp sweet undertones do have you looking for a top up all too often. Available in all good off licences across NI.
