Bikers gearing up for Toy Run
= Countrywide motorcyclists are gearing up for one of the biggest biking charity events in South Africa on November 27, the annualToy Run. The aim this year is to raise R200 000 for less fortunate children. The Toy Run starts at Pick ‘n Pay in William Moffett Expresswayand will make its way to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Rabies noneed to panic
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal-ity’s Dog Control Unit was inundatedwith phone calls from residents whowant their beloved pets vaccinatedafter a positive case of Rabies wasidentified in the Perseverance andDespatch areas.
“We would like to request resi-dents who do not live in Despatchand Perseverance not to panic astheir animals are not threatened atthis stage,” said municipal spokes-person Kupido Baron.
Hundreds of calls were received
since the first call for vaccinationswas issued by the municipality. Somuch so that one of the inspectorshad to assist in answering the tele-phones.
“Rabies were suspected after ameerkat acted out of character andbit a dog during a fight. The animalwas tested positive at the Onderste-poort Veterinary Institute of the Uni-versity of Pretoria and the dog wasplaced in isolation in an attempt tostop the disease from spreading,”said Baron.
Rabies is a viral disease that caus-es inflammation of the brain inwarm-blooded animals and it istransmitted by animals most com-monly by a bite from the carrier.
A mobile unit is currently busy inthe Despatch area.
Residents from Despatch and Per-severance cancall themunicipality’sDog Control Unit at 0041 506 1743 tofind out where the mobile unit is.Kindly be reminded that no housecalls can be attended to but only atthe mobile unit.

Car theft increasesSix vehicles were stolen or broken into duringthe past week in the Despatch area.
“We appeal to residents to be more responsibleand to ensure that their property, especially vehi-cles, is properly secured before they retire tobed,” said police spokesperson, W/O MarianetteOlivier.
“During routine patrols, it was observed thatvehicle owners negligently leave car keys in theignition while their vehicle is parked on theverge outside the property.
“Lazy drivers make no attempt to park theircars in their driveways or garages. Such lacka-daisical attitude makes you a soft target for crim-inals.”

According to Harris the drop inblood supply is mainly a result ofregular blood donors who areaway on holiday.
“Whilst preparing for the sea-son of ‘giving’ why not add blooddonation to your ‘to do’ list andgive someone else an opportunityof also being able to create newmemories,” said Harris.

HELP SAVE UITENHAGE’S TREES!
When entering Uitenhage it is a spectacularsite to see the town covered with green treesand patches of bright purple Jacarandas. Butwhen driving in some streets it is a sad sightto see the increasing cutting down of trees.
In an effort to stop the cutting down of treesand to encourage residents to rather takepride in the beauty of the town’s botany andto plant more indigenous trees, a “Save ourtrees” campaign was launched by CouncillorDerick Galloway.
“We need to be serious regarding the impor-tance of trees and stop the chopping off ofthem,” said Councillor Galloway.
“We all know Jacarandas are exotic trees,but that is no reason to chop them down. Thesetrees have tap-roots. So, those blaming Jaca-randas for blocking drains and therefore theymust be cut-down are far from the truth,” saidCouncillor Galloway.
Residents are encouraged to take pride inthe beauty of Uitenhage’s trees and ratherplant a indigenous tree than chop down offtrees.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST BY COMMUNITY GROUPS OR ENTITIES: PARTICIPATIONIN ECOTOURISM DEVELOPMENTSWITHIN NATURE RESERVES (C/E 2849)
1. PurposeThe Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (the NMBM) hereby invites expressions of interests from community groups or entities (community trusts, cooperatives,cooperatives and other companies, community trusts and other companies, other companies or joint ventures (JVs) between community trusts and cooperatives,cooperatives and other companies, community trusts and other companies, or community trusts, cooperatives, and other companies) to participate in developmentswithin specific NMBM nature reserves.
2. BackgroundThe municipal area of Nelson Mandela Bay comprises 195 412 ha (1 954 km²), of which approximately 8 500 ha is formally protected, representing many of the rare andthreatened habitats within the area. A large percentage of this area is currently being managed by the NMBM as 11 nature reserves.
Surrounding several of these reserves are rural communities living in adverse poverty. The NMBM has identified an opportunity for using this biodiversity economy tocreate potential avenues for economic development in these communities.
The Executive Mayoral Committee approved the development of the NMBM’s Nature Reserves on 29 March 2008 (19/3/1/1/1) (Agenda p. 17) (Minute No. 23/2008).Plans for upgrading and developing a number of these reserves, i.e. Settlers Park (including Dodds Farm, Victoria Park and St George’s Park), Maitlands, Van Stadens,Van der Kemp’s Kloof and Springs Nature Reserves, are currently under way. With the right development, these reserves have the potential to attract increased tourism.
3. Scope of work
3.1 In line with the above Executive Mayoral Committee resolution, the NMBM invites expressions of interest from community groups or entities to participate in thefollowing three (3) nature reserves with associated public open spaces:
3.1.1 Van Der Kemp’s Kloof Nature Reserve3.1.2 Swartkops and Aloes Nature Reserves
The abovementioned nature reserves are to be developed through a collaborative venture, comprising the NMBM, private developers (with vast experience in theEcotourism Sector), the community and South African development finance Institutions, such as DBSA, IDC and ECDC.
The proposal from interested parties should comply with the following:
These interested parties should be in close proximity to the nature reserves to ensure that the required accountability are responsibility is assumed by the correct peoplewho understand the environmental and socio-economic issues of the area. The following are the maximum required distances from the identified locations:
Van der Kemp’s Kloof Nature Reserve – 2 kmSwartkops Nature Reserve – 5 kmAloes Nature Reserve – 5 km
3.4 The proposals should explicitly demonstrate that:
3.4.1 The relevant entity has been registered and that a certified copy of the founding document and proof of registration are submitted.
3.4.2 Proof of previous involvement and implementation of environmental projects (e.g. in waste, environmental education, environmental management, conservation,pollution control, ecotourism and community development), preferably within the NMBM or elsewhere. In the case of a new entity, proof of experience in previousinvolvement in any of the above issues must be provided by the relevant individuals.
3.4.3 Indication of representivity of the community which the entity purports to represent.
