Police in Uitenhage want to send out astern warning to vehicle owners to bemore alert and attentive when locking
their vehicles andalso tomake sure that thereare no items left in them.
“A number of incidents have been reportedconcerning the usage of jamming devices(remote control device) to gain access tovehicles in the Uitenhage area,” said W/OGerda Swart, Uitenhage police spokesperson.Apparently suspects are using remote con-
trol devices to override the remote vehiclesecurity system.“This enables them to gain access to the
vehicle and take valuable items that were leftinside the vehicle.Owners are once again requested to double
check and ensure that the vehicle is lockedbefore leaving it.“It is especially applicablewhenyou cannot
hear the clicking sound or see the head lightsflashing when locking the vehicle.”It should also be secondnature to all vehicle
owners or passengers not to leave any visibleitems especially valuable and expensiveitems such as laptops, i-pads, computer equip-ment or cellphones in vehicles.“Do not leave items like a firearm or largeamounts of cash in the glove compartment
or anywhere else in the vehicle.“It is against the law to leave your firearm
in a vehicle,” said W/O Swart.

Rotarians in Uitenhage once again built a‘bridge of friendship’ by means of a struc-ture to traverse the gap from the top of thestairs to the pavement for residents atGranny Slipper old age home.This project was the brain child of Shaun
Gilbert and Nic Bakker from the Rotary
Club of Uitenhage South. It also was con-structed by Rotarians themselves.“This may very well be described as the
club’s first physical Bridge of Friendship,”said Aubrey Nel, president of the RotaryClub of Uitenhage South.Granny Slipper cares for fifteen elderly
persons with some form of mental ill healthlike Altzheimer’s and Senile Dementia and
was until recently the only institution of itskind in Uitenhage.“Theneedwas identified tomake it easier
for the elderly to walk to and from theroad side as well as for emergency staffto transport them more easily with wheelchairs or stretchers instead of carryingthe patients up or down the existing stairs,”said Nel.

gether with the Nelson MandelaMetropolitan Municipality wishesto inform the public regarding thestreets affected by the forthcomingStreet Carnival from 29 Novemberto 1 December.The streets affected by the Carni-
val are: Church Street, CaledonStreet (from Baird Street intersec-tion through to the Chase Street in-tersection), Market Street (fromCaledon down to Rich Street inter-section).According to Francois Greeff
from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage,no parking will be allowed in theareas from Caledon to MarketStreets during the Carnival.“Lances Lance, Daly Street and
part of Caledon Street will be usedas routes for emergency vehicles
and as drop-off points for disabledpersons,” said Greeff.“Although these roads will be
closed to normal traffic, provisionhas been made for delivery collec-tion vehicles for businesses.”Permitswill be issued to vehicles
and they have to be visible on thewindscreen.“We would like to assure busi-
ness owners and residents that wehave taken every possiblemeasureto ensure everyone’s safety duringthese two days,” said Greeff.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
“I could not believe my eyes! Three monthsago I wrote a letter congratulating PrinceWilliam and Kate on their newborn PrinceGeorge.
“They replied by sending me a photo of theRoyal couple with their baby and it wasaccompanied by a thank you letter addressedin my name,” said Joseph Jooste from Uiten-hage.
“My letter must have been one of severalmillions they received from fans all over the
world. What is absolutely amazing is thatthey did not regard it as only one of millions,but respected my interest in them and actual-ly replied.
“It only took five days since the Royal letterwas posted in England to arrive here at mypost box in Uitenhage.”

A young passer-by shouted these wordswhilst the UD News reporter visited the openarea at the corner of John Street and Henriet-ta Lane in the central business district ofUitenhage, after receiving complaints regard-ing illegal dumping.
“For fifteen years we have taken it uponourselves to keep this open area clean andhave had the grass cut. The condition with il-legal dumping is a losing battle and a realhealth hazard,” said Salomé Pieterse from thephysiotherapist practice in John Street.
“On Sundays we are urged to come and
clean-up the area in front of our practice sothat our patients do not have to face themess.”
A visit to the vast open site, which also isused as an informal driving lesson site re-vealed that there are people squatting on theproperty.
The two palm trees could just as well bedubbed “twin toilets” judging by the smell ofurine and faeces.
“We suddenly have a problem with flies atour practice. Look at the illegal dumping nextto our boundary wall; it is absolutely disgust-
ing. After one phones the municipality re-questing to have the refuse removed, it is saidit’s the responsibility of the parks depart-ment. When phoning them, we are referred toanother department. It seems that there is nopride in keeping the town clean,” said Pie-terse.
According to her, a few year ago there wasalso a terrible stench which eventually led tothe discovery of a decomposed body in thelong grass.
“These are not the kind of conditions thatwe are suppose to live in.”

Star of Hope is the first rugby club fromKwaNobuhle being promoted to partici-pate in the Grand Challenge Shield dur-ing 2014.
“It’s going to be tough up there and weknow exactly what to expect from thatleague. But we will have to front up anddo our best not to disappoint our fans.The club has done very well the pastthree seasons,” said Timonhy Konki,Star of Hope Rugby Football Club presi-dent.
The club has been active in rugby preand post the unification process. Of late,especially during the past five years, ithas grown and developed in leaps andbounds. Two years ago the clubwas play-
ing in the Wellman Harmse (3rd league)and promoted to play in the Adams Cup(2nd league).
“We have just been further promotedand will be playing in the Grand Chal-lenge Shield’s 1st B league during 2014.”
According to Konki the club is facedwith many challenges, one of them beingtransport. They are currently in theprocess to seek assistance in this regard.
“In this league it will be required fromus to travel as far as Graaff Reinet.”
