Armed Forces Week has been off to asuccessful start as thousands of peoplevisited the Port Elizabeth harbour to

view the Navy’s warships and submarine.

Navy Spokesman Commander Greylingvan denBerg said hewas overwhelmed by thepositive response they received during theweekend.“We had about 25 000 people at the harbour

over the weekend. We were truly over-whelmed with the positive reaction and wewere also grateful that they decided to spendtheir Valentine’s Day weekend with us.“There were people who waited for hours

to view the ships but they mentioned that itwas worth the wait,” van den Berg said.The night shooting eventwhich takes place

tonight, is expected to be one of the highlightsof Armed Forces Week.“The night shooting will be an absolute

highlight. There will be thousands of peopleattending and watching,” van den Berg said.The night shooting demonstration at Kings

Beach starts at 19:30 and will last for about40 minutes.The demonstration will end with a ball of

fire detonating on Kings Beach.“People should bring their picnic baskets

and chairs and come down to the Kings Beacharea or they can watch the night shootingfrom nearby restaurants; it will be a lovelynight out and something very different,” vanden Berg said.

There will be fan parks held at the KingsBeach area until this coming weekend, witha large military exhibition from 08:00 until17:00 daily, except onSundaywhen the exhibi-tion closes at 15:00.During the exhibition, the public can expe-

rience a range of military hardware, variousweapon systems, radar systems, armouredvehicles and artillery guns.The public will also be allowed to engage

with South African National Defence Force(SANDF) members at these displays and

climb on to and into the various display vehi-cles.The main event, Armed Forces Day, which

takes place on Sunday, in BeachRoad, will in-clude a large military parade followed by amilitary capability demonstration.

Fighting crime is a shared responsibility. Thepolice, the community and the business sec-tor need to work hand-in-hand to combatcrime effectively in the Uitenhage precinct.The South African Police Service appeal to

the community to work with the SAPS in re-

ducing crime by providing valuable informa-tion thatwill lead to the arrest of suspects andthe recovery of stolen property.According to police spokesperson, Lieuten-

ant Gerda Swart, police officials in the Uiten-hage Cluster have arrestedmore than 165 sus-

pects during crime prevention operationsthat were conducted over the past weekend.A total of 59 traffic fines were issued val-

ued at almost R30 000 during the period. Ar-rests made varied from assault with the in-tent to do grievous bodily harm, robbery, as-sault common and four (4) arrests weremade for driving under the influence of li-quor.Some 54 fines were issued for other liquor

related crimes and 27 suspectswere arrestedfor the illegal possession of drugs.

Four suspects, between the ages of 18 and32-years-old, appeared in the Addo RegionalCourt on Monday, on a charge of dealing inmandrax.“The four suspects were arrested last Fri-

day, during an intelligence driven operationwith various SAPS role players involved,”said Lieutenant Swart.“Policemembers confiscated 171mandrax

tablets worth R10 275 and R9 154 in cah. Thearrests were made at a residential addressin Valencia in Addo.”

Aansoeke om finansiële hulp ten opsigte van die 2016/17 finansiële jaar word ingewag viroorweging deur die Raad in Augustus/September 2016.

Net aansoeke wat ontvang is van die volgende kategorieë organisasies wat die gemeenskapin die Metropolitaanse gebied dien, sal oorweeg word:

1. Sportliggame (aansoeke ten opsigte van munisipale belasting uitgesluit).

2. Geregistreerde weldadigheids-, welsyns- of liefdadigheidsorganisasies.

3. Kuns en kultuur – biblioteke, museums, kunsmuseums, landbouverenigings, kuns- enkultuurgroepe.

4. Onderwysinstansies (laer- en hoërskole uitgesluit).

5. Plaaslike ekonomiese ontwikkeling (net geregistreerde organisasies sonder winsbejag).

6. Preprimêre skole/Educare-sentrums.

7. Skole vir gestremde/spesiale leerders.

Ingevolge die Raad se beleid moet aansoeke om hulp gedoen word op die voorgeskreweaansoekvorm en moet dit vergesel wees van die aansoeker se grondwet (net eerstekeer-aansoekers), jongste geouditeerde finansiële state en ander dokumente soos uiteengesit indie aansoekvorm.

With these words, Tracy Bandey McKay announcedher come-back to the circut after anabsenceof 18 years.“I have always yearned to get back in the seat, but

work commitments, raising a beautiful little girl as asingle mother, and life in general has made it impossi-ble,” said McKay.“But, now my little girl is almost a teenager, and I

have a wonderful new man in my life. And with hishelp, my father decided it’s time to build a new car.”With the assistance of a silent partner, McKay

bought a Mini and it has been made race-ready (al-though it is still street legal). She managed to gain thesupport of her former sponsors as well as new spon-sors.“My hero has always been Ayrton Senna. I have al-

ways admired his ethics, morals and attitude towardsmotorsport. He was a legend.“Locally, my mentor has always been Ben Morgen-

rood. He taughtme never to take anything for granted,the meaning of sportsmanship, and to always remem-ber to have fun. He said, ‘If you’re not having fun onthe black stuff, what is the point?’”So, this time around McKay is just racing for fun.“I don’t intend to take any race too seriouslt. I just

want to enjoy it. But if any of the guys get in my way,I will domy utmost best to get past them,” saidMcKay.McKay will race in the Regional Historics Champi-

onship. She used to race Clubman Saloons from 1992to 1997.
