Burglary in Table View and surroundshas steadily increased in the last fiveyears according to the released crime

statistics.This is no surprise to Table View police

station commander, Col Dirk Vosloo.“Table View is in policing terms known as

a property crime station due to the volumesof property crimes reported in the station ar-ea yearly. In the last five years burglary hasincreased by 24.5%, in the last three yearswith 10% and year on year by 14.3%.”

Vosloo reckons one of the reasons for this

is down to the perception that the area isseen as an affluent one by criminals.

Access“There are specific areas that attractmore

burglaries than other areas,” he continues.“In the Parklands area, the block between

Raats Drive on the South,WoodDrive on theWest, Sanddown on the North and Gie Roadon the East, are targeted mostly due to thegeographical placement of the area.

“It is easily accessible from the bushy are-as along the railway line and N7 areas. Thenew Sanddown extension will also have itsinfluence on the crime of the area.

“There will be easy access to the N7.”

He adds that the increase in area size ishaving a direct impact on the response timesof the police to dealwith this crime effective-ly.

Continues Vosloo: “Table View is growingat a rapid rate towards the north of the pre-cinct. Most development is in the Parklandsand Sunningdale area. There is a daily in-flux of people into the area.”

StrainThis expansion places even further strain

on the desperately low number of police of-ficers as reported on 7 August in the Tyger-Burger article entitled “Police in short sup-ply”.

The police to population ratio in TableView is approximately three times lowerthan the provincial average.

According to Dan Plato, Western CapeMEC of Community Safety there is only oneTable View police officer per every 721 citi-zens.

The South African Police Service (SAPS)in theWesternCapeapparentlyboasts anav-erage of one officer for every 245 citizens andin South Africa the ratio is one officer perevery 303 citizens.

Says Vosloo: “Staffing of a police stationis done from a provincial level and locallywe have no role to play.”

“Many factors influence staffing levels at apolice station, but the number of serious(contact) crimes like, murder, rape and ag-gravated robbery play a major role. TableView is not a big contributor to those crimesif one look at the provincial picture.”Table View’s murder rates are one of the

lowest in the country, with only six fromApril 2012 to March 2013. This figure hasbeen decreasing over the last few years.There has been a 12.2% increase in mur-

ders in the province during 2012/2013.Vosloo’s frank dissection of the statistics

is a breath of fresh air in comparison withhis peers throughout the province.A few days after the statistics were re-

leased Plato said: “Not only are we not given

access to crime statistics,we are alsonot giv-en any information to indicate where prob-lematic areas are.“The people of this province deserve these

answers.“The key indicators have shown an in-

crease when compared with last year, whileothers have shown a decrease. Out of 28crime categories, 22 have shown dramaticincreases – this is simply unacceptable.”

. Common robbery (mostly the grabbingof handbags and cellphones) has steadily in-creased in Table View over the years.“We will continue to patrol the hotspots

and make people aware through the mediaand by handing out pamphlets in thesehotspot areas,” says Vosloo.

“It is important to make people aware notto ‘display’ their cellphones to potential rob-bers. Through police patrols, we observedmany people, especially students, busy ontheir cellphones completely cut off from theworld around them.”He concludes by saying that Table View

is “very fortunate” that there is a massivegrowing interest in community mobilisa-tion in the past 12-18 months.“The Community Police Forum together

with the neighbourhoodwatch structures inthe three sectors, are doing amazing workto be the eyes and ears of the police and inpatrolling their streets, day and night.“As a station commander, I am really

humbled by their contribution.”

The power of social media is unimagina-ble.

After Table View’s Lona Marais (47) was“attacked and assaulted” by a 4x4 driverlast week Monday, her husband posted aheartfelt plea on an internet forum.

“If anybody in the Blouberg/West Beach/Table View area knows of a middle agedwhite male, overweight, with a newish sil-ver double cab 4x4 without number plates,please let me know. If the identified personis the person that attacked and assaultedmywife. Iwill pay aR50 000 rewardno ques-tions asked,” he wrote.

Themessage was posted on various otherforums and soon the “hunt” for the driverwas on.

The suspect handed himself in at the po-lice station when he realised the uproar his

actions caused.Since then most media houses have re-

ported extensively on the incident.It has come to light that Marais and a

friendwere on a training ride onPerlemoenStreet in Bloubergstrand that morningwhen the suspect skipped a stop sign whiletalking onhis cellphone and almost collidedinto her.

Marais shouted at him and then he alleg-edly rolled down his window and started in-sulting her.

Soon after he got out of his vehicle, spatin her face, punched her arms, twisted onebehind her back and tried to force her intooncoming traffic.

“Luckily all cars stopped and people triedto intervene,” said the husband. “But every-body was too scared to approach this guyas he was screaming he would kill all cy-clists and everybody else.”

The suspect will appear in court at theend of this month, but the manner in whichpublic pressure resulted in theman turning

himself over to the police is noteworthy.“The benefits of social media cannot be

underestimated,” says Table View Neigh-bourhood Watch’s (TVNW) Gemma Rede-lingshuys.

This neighbourhood watch has a blos-soming Facebook page with thousands ofmembers.

Almost daily someone will report an inci-dent on the page and withinminutes peoplewill “be on the lookout”.

Table View Police spokesperson Lt Eliza-beth Munro agrees that social media is a“wonderful tool”, but she adds that itpresents a new challenge as well – regula-tion.

“I’m very happy with TVNW’s page be-cause Gemma usually phones me and veri-fies an incident before it is posted,” she ex-plains.

“People like to add ‘tails’ to stories andtheir opinions could turn something posi-tive into something negative, so one shouldbe careful,” she explains.

Brave rescue fails for rooikatANDRÉ BAKKES

When the rusty-coloured caracal felineopened her eyes, the pain subsided for amoment and was replaced by surprise.

The caracal (rooikat) was lying on theback seat of a Mercedes.

Within seconds she was doing her best“don’t-you-dare” impression when a per-son tried to open the door.

This seemed to work, because that facecontorted with fear.

She can remember crossing the N7 nearMelkbosstrand... feeling an unbearablepain shoot through her leg and then pass-ing out.

Two people were peering through thewindow this time. She hisses and spits.

By the time the feline was darted by theSPCA the inside of the car had lost theBattle of Claw and Seat.

The story begins with a Canal Walkbusinessman driving from Yzerfonteinon the N7.

Unfortunately, he hit a caracal on hisway towards Cape Town and was facedwith a dilemma – should he drive on ortry to save the unconscious cat?

He chose the latter.The man loaded the cat into his car on

the back seat and raced to Hakuna MatataVeterinary Clinic in Bloubergstrand.

Once he arrived he left one of the win-dows slightly open and went in to informDr Carike van Loggerenberg of the newpatient.

Much to everyone’s shock the felineawoke from her slumber while he wasgone.

Says Van Loggerenberg: “We informedthe SPCA and had to wait for them to ar-rive and dart her. Her back right leg wasbroken. This kind of injury requires that

she stays immobilised during aftercare,so the only thing the SPCA could do wasto put her down. It was very sad, but onemust look at the bigger picture.”

Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s wildlife unitmanager Brett Glasby says they had todart the animal through the gap in thewindow. “She was a wild animal and verydefensive. There was an extra element ofdanger because the animal was injured,”he explains.

Both Van Loggerenberg and Glasby saythat the driver showed compassion to tryto help the animal, but that he didn’t goabout it in the right way.

Glasby says it was lucky the caracal

didn’t wake up while he was driving.“We really appreciate what the gentle-

man did. Not many people would do whathe did, but it would have been a very dan-gerous situation had the animal woke upwhile he was on the N7.

“The wild cat could also have woken upwhile he put it in the car. While we appre-ciate what he did, it is better to get some-one who is trained and able to do the han-dling,” says Glasby.

According to him one can save theSPCA’s number on one’s phone for quickaccess or one could phone the City of CapeTown’s 107-number, who in turn could no-tify the SPCA.

The caracal’s close encounter with a Mercedes was his last.

Provincial Minister for Transport RobertCarlisle has opposed the proposed loweringof the blood-alcohol limit from 0.05g/100mlto 0.02g/100ml.

“It doesn’t help to drop the level to0.02g/100ml if you can’t catch and convictdrunk drivers at the current 0.05g/100mllevel. Quick and harsh convictions must bethe focus instead,” he said in a statementlast week.

Blood Alcohol Content Limit defines themaximum legal amount of alcohol that ispermitted to be in the blood for people tolegally drive.

“In our submissions to the Department ofTransport, we pointed out that there is stillno scientific evidence to show that if the ex-isting acceptable levels of alcohol consump-tion are further reduced, there will be a de-cline in the number of crashes. Further,there is no proof that drivers with alcoholconcentration levels of 0.05g/100ml aremore dangerous than those with alcoholconcentration levels of up to 0.02g/100ml,”he said.

According to Carlisle, the current limit inSouth Africa is the same as most othercountries.

te sien nie en ek het vir hom ’n sakkie inko-pies gekry, – ’n brood, ’n french polony, bot-ter, plastiek bottermesse, ’n hoender-mayo-sub, ’n pakkie tabak en vuurhoutjies, en ’nCoke. Dit klink pateties, maar dit het myR120 gekos. Hoe op dees aarde moes hy ditooit kon bekostig?

Hy het belowe hy gaan my bel (ná ek myselfoonnommer met hom gedeel het), eneendag, dan gaan hy my Namakwaland toevat, dáár waar hy grootgeword het.

The Mountain and Trail Enthusiasts(MATES), in partnership with theFriends of Blaauwberg Conserva-tion Area (BCA), will hold the thirdBCA Mates Trail Challenge in theBlaauwberg Nature Reserve on Sat-urday, 28 September.

After the success of the previousevents, great interest is expected inthis year’s event.

“There are a number of raceevents in and around the TableMountain area and the Winelands,but this trail challenge is the onlyone that offers the opportunity torun through the Blaauwberg NatureReserve. With views of Table Moun-tain, Robben Island and Table Bay,participants can run either the15 km or the 8 km route. The routeswill run over the two hills, Blouberg-koppie and Kleinberg, and throughthe colourful spring vegetation with-in the nature reserve,” says thecity’s mayoral committee memberfor economic, environmental andspatial planning, Garreth Bloor.

The proceeds of the race will go to-wards promoting the conservationof the reserve.

Registration will start at 06:00,with the longer 15 km race startingat 07:30. The 8 km race will start im-mediately afterwards, at 07:45.

There are a limited number of en-tries so pre-registration is a must.Participants can register using theform on the website and paymentcan be made via bank transfer. Theentry fee has been kept as low as pos-sible, and is R100 for the 15 km trailand R50 for the 8 km trail.

Chairman of the Friends of BCA,Roy Fuller-Gee, says: “Since the firstchallenge event in 2011,wehave seenrunners return each year to enjoytaking on the scenic route throughthe Blaauwberg Nature Reserve,which involves the Kleinberg andBlaauwberg Hills. We encouragenew competitors to experience thisyear’s trail challenge event.”

Kuils River Hospital re-cently became Africa’sfirst and only accredit-

ed advanced heart care facili-ty.

This accoladewas bestowedon the hospital by the interna-tional Adult Congenital HeartAssociation (ACHA).

The hospital’s secret heartweapon? When Dr LouHofmeyr, an adult congenitaland structural heart diseasecardiologist fromMilnerton, joined thehos-pital’s state-of-the art cardiac unit, the SAEndovascular Practice.

“This afforded the Netcare Kuils RiverHospital (NKRH) the accreditation,” saidKaren Eagle, the hospital’s spokeswoman.

AdvancedThe distinction between any other hospi-

tal’s cardiac unit and the one now function-al in Kuils River, is the fact that they offeradvanced cardiology.

And it was Hofmeyr’s completion of an 18month fellowship in 2012 that meant thehospital met all the criteria to obtain the ac-creditation which made it the only one onthe continent with this honour.

“NKRH is the only facility in Africa to of-fer advanced cardiology recommended bythe ACHA,” Hofmeyr said.

He explained that a number of require-mentshad tobemet to becomeAfrica’s lead-er in ACHD. These included having an ex-tended medical staff including surgeons, in-tensive care specialists, imaging andanaesthetic backup, aswell asnursing staff,high care and ICU facilities. Finally a struc-tural heart and interventional cardiologist,such as himself specialising in ACHD.

“A multi-specialised group of practition-

ers allowing the practice toperform comprehensivemedical and interventionalcardiological services,” hesaid.

LeadersHofmeyr was clear about

what his team wished toachieve.

“In time, we aim to be-come the leading cardiac fa-cility in the country, withpatients travelling from farto be treated by this team ofmedical experts,” he said.

Ever heard of a baby born with a “holein the heart”? This is what Hofmeyr’s jobis all about. He explains.

“Congenital heart disease is a type ofbirth defect in one or more structures of theheart or blood vessels that occur beforebirth. The most common congenital heartdisorders affecting adults include abnor-malities of the valves and vessels of theheart wall that develop with wear and tearon the heart, or through disease,” he said.

Impressive“The most common type of congenital

heart disease include abnormal connec-tions between the right and left sides of theheart, such as holes in the walls or obstruc-tions in the normal pathways exiting theheart.”

Becauseof its superheart team, thehospi-tal boasts an impressive number of cardiactreatments. Recently Table View Lions Club sold cupsof soup at R10 each to raise funds for Penin-sula School Feeding Association (PSFA).It was also apparently a great public rela-

tions exercise as membership brochuresand Lions Club International videos weredisplayed for the public to peruse.According to the club not as many cups

were sold as anticipated, but every centhelps and the community were generous intheir monetary donations. The balance ofthe unsold soup was donated to TLC Out-

reach Project for Street Children.PSFA remain committed to continuing

their service of feeding the 22 000 hungrychildren in 111 schools that do not receivethe subsidy. These schools are fed fromfunds raised through their various cam-paigns.The annual cost to feed these children

amounts to R8 690 000.Of the 111 schools, 67 have been “adopted”

by caring individuals and corporates for theyear ahead. The difference, amounting tomore than R4 800 000 has to be raised.

Beach spotless after cleanup

Before Sinenjongo High School cleaned Sunset Beach.

While most people were tucked up in bedduring the rain storms last Saturday, 110learners from Joe Slovo Park were singingsongs of optimism as they made their wayto Sunset Beach inMilnerton for the annu-al International Coastal Cleanup Day.One look at the filthy beach, which was

made worse by the storms washing up lit-ter from the ocean, and the learners knewthey had their work cut out for them.But they were up for the challenge!The event began with a safety talk about

what can and can’t be collected during thecleanup, then a group of youngstersdanced to their favourite beats on theCoca-Cola gigrig stage.After the show, the learn-ers were given shirts, caps, and gloves byPeninsula Beverages and rubbish bags byPlastics SA, then they made their way tothe beach for anhour and ahalfwhere theypicked up 179 bags of litter, weighing1 074kg.The 350 metre stretch of beach was un-

recognisable after the learners tackled thelitter problem, and they worked up an ap-petite.PenBev then fed their hunger with well-

deserved fresh fruit and sandwiches, aswell as refreshments.Denise Green, PenBev’s corporate social

investment manager comments: “We areso proud of the learners from SinenjongoHigh who showed their dedication to theenvironment by braving the cold to helpclean the beach. We are passionate aboutenvironmental issues and supportmany ofthese types of initiatives.”The beach clean-up initiative was orga-

nised by Clean-C. After Sinenjongo High School learners cleaned the beach.

Learners plant donated seeds for the futureTableViewLionsClub receivedagenerousdonation from Formula 1 Hotels to get in-volved with a local school on Arbour Day.The clubapproachedWestRidingPrima-

ry School in Table View and vice-princi-pal, Nic du Toit, gave the green light.Grade 2s and3shavebeen learningabout

seeds in their curriculum and there were70 scholars present on the day.The club purchased various vegetables

and seeds (including herbs), compost, or-ganic sprays and so forth from StodelsMil-nerton together with a kind donation ofthree indigenous trees.In return for their labour the kids were

rewarded with hot dogs and cold drinks.With some funds left over from this

project, the clubdonated cash to the school.

The 10th Inaugural Cup was recently heldat Atlantic Beach Golf Club in partnershipwith Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.The board of ambassadors decided back

in 2000 that the opening of the clubhousewill be celebrated every year and that a lo-cal charity will benefit – in this case it wasthe children’s hospital.Among the celebrities who attended the

evening were Bruce Fordyce and Melk-bosstrand actress Milan Murray.This year the focus fell on the “ward 9”

project, which is basically about upgrad-ing and expanding the neo-natal and paedi-atric wings.Says Murray: “It is heartbreaking to

hear how many little patients are turnedaway just because there aren’t enoughbeds!”The hospital looks after approximately

25 000 children in the outpatient depart-ment and admits about 16 000 babies andchildren annually. Of these admissions1 000 babies and children are severely illor require serious surgery.For the Paediatrics Department to

Dear Cllr Brett Herron: AsMayco member for stormwaterI thought I should bring thisstory to your attention – goodand bad!When Cape Town wasdeluged on 29 August, our oldhouse, on the corner of Farn-worth and Donegal streets inRugby was directly affected.The water flooded the streetsto the extent it flowed into ourgarden – undermining ourfoundations and causing wallsto crack further.Here, a touch of history: Inorder to provide sufficientdrainage to the catchment areaof Wingfield and what is nowthe Century City wetlands,Rugby, Tygerhof, Ysterplaat,(strategically the Air Forcebase) and parts of Brooklynand Milnerton, the Wingfieldoutfall was built. After passingunder Koeberg Road theselarge stormwater pipes run...all the way to the beach southof the Lagoon Beach complex.Due to blockages furtherdown the pipes, on that day,the manholes were blown offby the force of the water andsevere flooding of the streetsresulted, as well as the soccerfields of the Portuguese Club. Ireported this to the City ofCape Town and a team wassent as a temporary solution.Weather forecasts on 14 and15 September predicted heavyweather for 19 and 20 Septem-ber, so on Monday the 16th Icontacted the city again. Thenext day a team arrived andstarted work.Initially they were non-plussed as to why the southernand centre manholes should befilled with water... the pumpassembly, used for irrigatingthe soccer fields of the Portu-guese Club gave clues. Insummer when the water tableis low, there would be littlewater flowing through theoutfall pipes, so a complicatedsystem of damming up thesouthern and centre pipes was

Sy sê haar sangloopbaan het eers ná uni-versiteit begin. “Ek wou al baie lank ’n al-bum opneem, maar dit was nooit die regtetyd nie,” sê Lizel.

So drie jaar gelede het Lizel ’n duidelikeboodskap gekry dat sy moes begin om haaralbum op te neem.

“Dit was toe die tyd en die plek daarvooren van toe af vloei dit regtig net baie lek-ker,” sê sy.

InspirasieLizel skryf haar eie musiek en sê die heel

eerste plekwaar sy inspirasie vind, is by dieHere.

“Wat Hy in my lewe gedoen het, wat Hynog steeds elke dag doen en die getuieniswat ek van Hom kry en waarna hy met mybeweeg, inspireer my,” verduidelik sy.

Sy sê sy vind ook inspirasie in die natuur,haar kinders, mense vir wie sy lief is en an-der mense se stories.Lig is deurRiaanSteynbyTraxStudio op-

geneem.Hiervan sêLizel: “Hy’t ’nwonderli-ke job gedoen.”

Op die oomblik is die album, wat in Mei

bekend gestel is, net by Lizel beskikbaar,maar sy is besig ommet ’n platemaatskappyte onderhandel om die CD op die rakke tekry.

Lizel sê elke optrede is vir haar ’n hoogte-punt.

“Ek is eerlik as ek sê elke keer wanneerek bedien, elke keer wat ek op die verhoogstaan, wanneer ek sing, wanneer ek dit metmense deel en getuig, is dit virmy ’n hoogte-punt,” sê Lizel.

Nog ’n hoogtepunt was haar onderhoudmet Radio Kansel in Pretoria.

“Ek het baie planne en ek het baie dro-me,” sê Lizel.

Sy wil in die volgende jaar of twee haarvolgende album opneem en sy begin reedsaan nuwe liedere te dink.

bassist and vocalist for the band who areknown for hits like “Living Next Door to Al-ice”, “Lay Back in the Arms of Someone”,“Mexican Girl”, “For a Few Dollars”, “Nee-dles and Pins” and “If You Think You KnowHow to Love Me”.“Living next door to Alice” is arguably

one of the band’s biggest hits here in SouthAfrica. The song, which was written byNicky Chinn and Mike Chapman was origi-nally released by anAustralian group calledNew World in 1972.Uttley talks about how Smokie decided to

record the song in a studio in Los Angeles,USA.Terry says: “We were just talking about

our upbringing in Yorkshire and MikeChapman, our producer, was talking abouthisupbringing inAustralia andwewere justhaving a lazy day.”Chapman was recounting how he started

songwriting and told them about a song hehad written for NewWorld. “He sang it, andwhen he got to the chorus we all took ourparts because it had been a minor radio hitin England,” he recalls.“It was so memorable,” Uttley adds.He explains that after hearing them sing

the chorus Chapman said: “That’s it, we’vegot to record this”.“Wewent ‘ah, no,we don’t dowe’ and she’s

become our flagship basically, out of achance conversation,” Uttley says.Smokie’s last album, Take a Minute, was

released in August 2010, but Uttley says fanscan expect something new in the not too dis-tant future.“We’re actually five songs into a new al-

bum,” he says.Today the band is made up of Martin Bull-

A gap for rugby talentThe Western Province Rugby Football

Union has unveiled a new initiative toprovide much-needed educational sup-

port to young rugby hopefuls in the prov-ince.

The Western Province Rugby President’sTrust, launched at DHL Newlands on Tues-day 17 September, will provide bursaries, aswell as rugby training and development togifted young players who can’t afford prima-ry, secondary or tertiary schooling.

The brainchild of previous president, To-bie Titus, the trust has now come to life and

is set to change the lives of many childrenwho are eager to pursue a career in profes-sional rugby.

Unifying“There is no doubt that sport, and particu-

larly rugby, is a unifying force; one that canbring together the communities across theWestern Cape,” comments Thelo Wakefield,current president of the union and of thetrust.

“However, there are so many talentedyoung players that, while they have a natu-

ral aptitude for rugby, are unable to realisetheir full potential since they don’t have ac-cess to funds for schooling. The trust aimsto give an opportunity to these players, giv-ing them a well-rounded approach to theircareer.”

“Being a successful rugby player is aboutmore than just playing rugby,” commentsScarra Ntubeni, DHL Stormers and DHL WPplayer and speaker at the launch.

“It’s about having an educational frame-work – understanding the business of rugbyand how to build a career once your profes-

sional rugby days are over. The trust is a keyintervention, since it allows potential play-ers to acquire this knowledge to be success-ful.”

It is registered as a Section 18A non-profitorganisation, is funded through public dona-tions and will now be on the search for like-minded partners and donors to increase theopportunities for bursaries. These bursariesand development opportunities are open toany young rugby player between the ages ofsix and 21, who feels that he or she showsdemonstrable talent or potential.

This year’s Old Boys Rugby Tournamentwill be hosted by Uni Milnerton Rugby Clubat Theo Marais Park.

Milnerton Old Boys will be defendingtheir fourth title in as many years againstBosmansdam, Table View and Rondebosch.

The tournament has been moved back toMilnerton Rugby Club as it is central for all.

On Friday 27 September Table View willface Rondebosch at 19:00 and MOB vs Bos-mansdam at 21:00. On Thursday 3 OctoberMOB and Rondebosch will lock horns at19:00 and Bosmansdam and Table View bat-tle at 21:00. Friday 11 October sees Bosmans-dam and Rondebosch at 19:00 and MOB vsTable View at 21:00.
