vriende geforseer om mekaar se anusse teondersoek vir dagga.Dít is wat ’n seun en sy ma van Wesbank,albei van die Rastafariër-gemeenskap hier,beweer Vrydag gebeur het tydens ’n polisie-klopjag op ’n gewilde Rastafariër-kuierplek.Daar word glo dagga verkoop byMadibas-traat 22, maar die ouers van kinders wat

hierheen kom, het nie problememet dié pleknie.“Ek ken die eienaar van die plek waar diekinders sit. Dis ’n veilige plek vir my kindom te sit. Ek hoef nie te bekommer waar hyis nie,” sê Rhonda Keys. Sy het gesê wat ge-beur het, het haar laat besef die polisie hethaar kind oor die dinge ‘slim’ gemaak.

PerseelHaar seun, wat ten tyde van die klopjag opdié perseel was, wil nie sy naam genoem hênie.Hy het aan TygerBurger verduidelik wat

gebeur het: “Hulle (polisie) het ingekom toesien hulle ons skiet kerimbord. Toe gaanhulle regdeur agtertoe na die manne wat(dagga) rook. Toe kom hulle weer vorentoeen begin slaan sommer ’n man in die huis,”beweer hy.“Toe sê hulle ons moet ons broeke aftreken ons ‘h–lle’ oopmaak, hulle wil kyk watdaarin is. Toe skynhulle hul flitsligte daarinen sê ons moet afsak. Toe moet ons met onsbroek wat afgetrek is, staan – amper asofdaar nou iets moet uitval.“Hulle het ’n bênkie (banksakkie met dag-ga) op die een ou gekry, maar nie dáár nie.

Toe vat hulle hom en skop hom teen sy bors,en toe pie hy in sy broek. Toe ry hulle en sêhulle gaan weer kom,” sê die seun.Rhonda vertel verder: “Húlle het hom be-wus gemaak dat dáár ook goed in wegge-steek kan word. Toe my kind by die huiskom, toe wou hy by my weet hoekom hulledan dáár gesoek het,” het sy gesê.“Dis mos tronk-dinge daardie. Jy doen ditmos met geharde kriminele. Hoekom moeshulle my kind soos ’n krimineel behandel?Was dit nodig dat hulle in sy agterent moeskrap?” wou sy weet.

Die ouderdomme van die groep van seuns enjong mans wat op die perseel was, wissel van14 tot sowat 24, sê die groep wat met Tyger-Burger gepraat het. Hulle almal se anusse isna bewering ontbloot sodat daar na dagga ge-soek kon word.

Dié insident, glo uitgevoer deur ’n taak-mag van die Kuilrivier-polisie nadat bureglo gekla het oor harde musiek, het by An-drew Adonis se huis plaasgevind.

Hy het sy plek omskep in ’n bymekaar-komplek vir jongmense van die Rastafariër-kultuur, en erken dat hulle dagga rook, wantdis deel van hul kulturele gebruike.

“Die polisie kom hierheen en as hulle onskom ‘skud’, kom hulle sonder ’n lasbrief,”beweer Adonis. “Hulle kry niks (dagga) nie,maar die ouens word geklap en geslaan. Hul-le jaag sommer die ouens weg,” sê hy.

Hy was nie ten tyde van die voorval tuisnie. “Die Rasta-manne wat hier kom, rookhier. As julle ons hier kry, kry julle ons aandie rook,” sê hy.

Grawill Roelf, een van dié wat daar was,vertel. “Toe ons broeke klaar uitgetrek is,toe sê hulle nou maak hulle mekaar (se anus-se) oop en nou gaan julle binne-in mekaar(se anusse) kyk. Een polisieman het my kopteen die muur gedruk en my in my testikelsgestamp,” beweer hy.

Die Rastas wat daar kom, het glo by diebure handtekeninge gaan werf om musiekdaar te speel en om Saterdagaande “dubs”,of Rasta-danse, daar te hou, sê Adonis.

“Die bure het gesê hulle het nie ’n pro-bleem met die musiek nie. Nou kom die poli-sie en sê die bure kla oor die musiek. Onsspeel net tot twaalfuur,” sê hy. “Ons het hul-le almal se handtekeninge op ’n blaai om tesê dis oukei dat ons hier speel,” sê hy.

Die groep sê hulle kry gereeld Rasta-kuier-gaste van so ver as Paarl, maar ook van Eer-

sterivier, Delft, Happy Valley en Kalkfon-tein, en dis dan dat daar “dub” gehou wordop die Sabbat, Saterdae, sê hulle. Dan kykhulle fliek, dans of hou redenaarsessies.Adonis het selfs ’n toilet aangebou nadat bu-re gekla het oor die jongspan wat in die open-baar urineer, sê hy.

Twee segsvroue van die Rastafariër-ge-meenskap, Ronel Thyssen en AngeliqueBanks, beweer dít is hoe Rastas van Wes-bank gereeld behandel word.

“Daar was geen volwassenes daar tydensdie voorval nie. Die polisie viktimiseer onsRasta-jongmense. Ons wil weet hoekomword ons kinders só behandel. Ons beplan’n vreedsame protesoptog Vrydagoggend omnege-uur,” sê Ronel.

Angelique sê: “Ons soek nie die polisie omlinks en regs hier in te hardloop en ons kin-ders te teister nie. Daar word teen ons gedis-krimineer. Trek die gemeenskap petisies opteen die tikhuise? Of die sjebiens? Nee, maaras die Rastas iets probeer doen, is dit ’n pro-bleem. “Elkeen het sy eie vice. Ons is groot-mense. Ons kies om (dagga) te gebruik. Dis’n bewustelike keuse,” sê Angelique.

Kapt. Nomathemba Muavha, segsvrouvan die Kuilsrivier-polisiegroep, het na-mens die polisie antwoord gegee oor die ge-beure. “Op Vrydag 6 Augustus om 16:00 totmiddernag is ’n gekombineerde groep-optre-de gedoen deur Mfuleni-, Kuilsrivier- enKleinvlei-polisie. Soektogte is uitgevoer byverskillende huise, asook ander plekke.

“Die polisie het verskeie klagtes van diegemeenskap ontvang van kriminele aktiwi-teite in die huis, asook inligting oordwelms,” het sy gesê.

“Een inhegtenisneming is op die perseelgemaak van ’n 19-jarige man vir besit vandagga. Hy is die volgende dag vrygelaat met’n waarskuwing om Maandag 9 September

in die Blue Downs-hof te verskyn.“Geen van die verdagtes was minderjarig

nie,” het Muavha gesê.“Daar was geen vroue op die perseel nie,

maar daar was vroue-beamptes. Daarom isslegs die mans deursoek,” het sy gesê.

Muavha sê wanneer daar inligting ont-vang word oor dwelms op ’n perseel na-ure,het die polisie die reg om ’n huis te deursoeksonder ’n lasbrief.

“Daar was geen anale soektogte gedoennie. As die lid van die gemeenskap wat (Ty-gerBurger) gebel het, beweer dat dit uitge-voer is, is daardie persoon welkom om ’nsaak teen die polisie te open om ondersoekte word.

“Die polisie is verbind daartoe om geweldteen vroue en kinders te beveg,” het sy gesê.

“My blomkoolkoppe is amper net so grootsoos my kop,” sê Boy Masaba van MeltonRose in Eersterivier trots.

Hy maak al tuin sedert hy by Hakius-straat in 1997 ingetrek het, maar moes vir’n wyle staak toe hymet bouery aan sy huisbesig was.

“Op die oomblik is daar net blomkool,want dit was winter. Maar in die somerplant ek weer iets anders. Vir die eerstekeer sedert ek hier begin plant het, is dieblomkool massief groot.

“Ek plant al sedert 1997, maar omdat ons’n paar keer aangebou het, moes ek staak.Sodoende het my tuin agteruitgegaan.Maar nou is dit weer goed en aan die gang.

“Vanmyprobleme is die sand hier, en dieslakke, maar ek gebruik slakpilletjies. Enek gebruik die portjackson-saagsels wat diemunisipaliteit teen die paaie opsnipper, ommy tuin mee te bewerk.

“Ek gee dus geen geld uit nie. Ek bewerkdit ook met duiwemis.”

Boy het op die oomblik broccoli, blom-kool en kopkool in die grond, asook ’n paarspinasieplantjies. “Dis al wat goed aard indié grond, omdat dit sandgrond is,” sê hy.

Maar hy het groot planne vir sy lappieaarde. “Ek moet begin pluk voor die blom-kool saad skiet, want dis nou blomtyd. Danwil ek groenboontjies daar plant.”

Boy sema is onlangs oorlede,maar hy be-plan nie om van die koppe by die begrafnisin te span omdie besoekers te help voednie.

“Ek gaan dit nie op die begrafnis voorsitnie. Dit sal nie reg wees nie. Ek sit net aar-tappels by endanmaakek ’n lekkerkerrie.”

Hy het ook geen planne om sy enormeblomkole te verkoop nie.

“Dié kole is oorgenoeg vir ons twee gesin-ne – my seun bly agter (op die erf). Nee, ekwil nie verkoop nie. Ek gee maar so vir myvriende en familiewatkomkuier.Dangaanhulle mos darem ’n bietjie gelukkiger hierweg.”

due to the abundance of their food source.Humans unintentionally create snake-friendly gardens due to unkempt or over-grown gardens containing discarded build-ing material, rubble or compost. It in turnis a suitable habitat for those little pestslike rats, mice and exotic birds.Remembersnakes are attracted to neglected areas forfood and to avoid human confrontation.There is no real way of keeping snakes offyour property, but if you keep your grass

cut short, trees well trimmed and clean upall your building rubble, just to mention afew, then there is less likelihood for snakesto reside on your property. In short keepyour garden tidy. Very, very few snake spe-cies can be considered a threat to humans,as most do not have venom glands. Snakesonly defend themselves against interfer-ence and never attack.Killing a snake is nothing to be proud of

as you are dealing with an animal that hasno arms, fingers, feet, legs, eyelids and along list of disadvantages over other ani-mals.Let’s not succumb to ignorance by de-

mote the welfare of animals and providethe framework for the city’s approach tounderstanding and dealing with domesticcompanion animals. It will focus primarilyon the welfare of domestic companion ani-mals and working equines (e.g. cart hors-es), a press release from the city reads.This policy is supported by the legisla-

tion that the city ismandated to implementand entitled to enforce, i.e. the city’s Ani-mal Bylaw.However, the bylaw does not clearly ar-

ticulate the city’s approach to the care andwelfare of animals. In the absence of a poli-cy, there is a lack of clarity on the roles andresponsibilities between and within gov-ernment for promoting animal care.Animal rights need to be balanced with

the potential effect that animals may haveon humans.The city has the difficult task of consider-

ing any health, nuisance, economic, tour-ism, and safety risks while ensuring thatit has legislation and policies in place toprotect residents and animals.The finalised draft will undergo a public

participation process from this Monday (9September) to 11 October during whichstakeholders and interested parties are en-couraged to provide their comments.The draft policy will be made available

vind vanVrydag 29November tot Son-dag 1DesemberbydieBergkroon-oordop Wellington.Sedert 2009 word die Namafees jaar-

liks gevier met die doel om die Namasse taal, kultuur en erfenis te bewaar,bevorder en te beskerm.In 2010 is ’n kultuuruitruilingsoor-

eenkoms met die Witbooi’s van Nami-bië en Suid Afrika aangegaan, ten ein-de die Namataal en kultuur te bevor-der.Om hierdie rede kom daar elke jaar

Namas van Namibië na Suid Afrikaom die fees by te woon, maar terself-dertyd die kultuuroordrag te demon-streer.Verlede jaar het 60 Namas uit Nami-

bië die fees bygewoon. Vanjaar is diebelangstelling vir die fees geweldighoog. By die Namafees sal die Namasgeleentheidkryomhulhandgemaaktekultuurgoedere uit te stal en ook asaandenkings te verkoop.Alle Namas se stalletjies sal gratis

Resident helps policecatch ‘crowbar gang’

A Parow resident’s alert actions led to the arrest of four members of the notorius Crowbar gang.

The action of an alert Parow residentwas instrumental in the latest arrestof four members of the notorious

“crowbar gang” in Clarendon Street, on 5September.

Michael Minnis was cleaning the gutteron his roof around 10:00, when he saw awhite Toyota Condor with four black occu-pants cruising down the street.

The pace at which the car was travellingaroused his suspicion, but it was the waythe occupants of the car were seeminglysurveying properties in the area thatprompted Minnis to action.

The crowbar gang is believed to be a syn-dicate of burglars operating in CapeTown’s northern suburbs.

FollowedTheir weapon of choice is a crowbar,

which they use to gain access to homes andproperties they burgle.

“I read about the crowbar gang on thepublic servant website and I heard somepeople say that one of the getaway cars thegang travels in is a white Toyota Condor,”Minnis explained.

Within seconds of realising that themysterious car and its suspicious occu-pants were probably members of the crow-bar gang, Minnis immediately came downfrom the roof and got into his car to followthem.

“I hopped into my car, called Parow po-lice, and proceeded to follow them.

“They were so occupied, I don’t thinkthey realised they were being followed. Iwas behind them, but they were travellingat such a slow pace that I had no other-choice but to pass them eventually.

“I went to the bottom of the road fromwhere I could get a full view of the direc-tion they were heading,” Minnis recalled.

According to Minnis, the driver of thecar had at that stage of his pursuit madea u-turn before he finally stopped the car.

“I saw three of the occupants get out ofthe vehicle and enter a block of flats. Thedriver got out last, walked to the corner ofthe street and stood there like he was on

the lookout,” Minnis said.At this point Minnis realised he had been

at the bottom of the road watching these peo-ple for 30 minutes and still no police werein sight.

With no police to back him up Minnisgrew anxious at the prospect of the ganggrowing suspicious of his aimless hoveringaround, so he went back home.

Chaos“I knew I would still be able to watch them

from home, which is exactly what my col-league, who was at my house at the time, andI did,” Minnis said.

According to Minnis the railway police ar-rived first and then Parow police appeared.

This is apparently when chaos brokeloose, as police officers, in full view of by-standers, tried to arrest the gang.

“The ones that went into the block of flatshad apparently already broken into one ofthe apartments when police arrived,” Minn-is said.

“Police apprehended the first one and therest scattered.

“I saw one of them try to beat down theelectric fence surrounding the block of flatswith a crowbar in an attempt to escape. Thenthey all started fleeing.

“The police were too slow, so my colleagueand I pitched in to help catch the suspects.We blocked them with the help of one of theofficers. Together we managed to catch oneand other police officers caught the othertwo.

“All four were apprehended in the end,”Minnis said.

“I don’t want to take the credit alone, asthe railway police were outstanding in se-curing these arrests.

“I just want those imbeciles, who thinkthey can come into our neighbourhood andcommit crime, to know that we won’t toler-ate it. We have zero tolerance for criminalsand we won’t entertain them around here,”Minnis warned.

Parow police spokesperson, Lt Kevin Wil-liams, confirmed the arrests: “The four menwere arrested on a charge of attemptedhousebreaking and the vehicle that theyused was confiscated and handed over to po-lice for investigation,” Williams said.

There were lots of fun on the run in the 10th Medihelp Tekkiechallenge held at Jan Kriel School in Kuils River on Saturday.Plenty of participants dressed to the theme “Go Green” andbrought their four-legged friends along for the 4Paws challen-ge that was introduced this year. The event is held in aid ofchildren with special educational needs and features a 10 kmrun/walk, 5 km fun run/walk, and a nappy and kiddies’ run.

GRATIS VERVANGING VAN UITGEDIENDEELEKTRISITEITSMETERSDie Stad Kaapstad se departement elektrisiteitsdienste het met ’n projek vir die vervangingvan uitgediende elektrisiteitsmeters begin. Hierdie projek sal aanvanklik op uitgediendekragkoopmeters fokus maar later uitgebrei word vir die vervanging van sommige van dieouer kredietmeters in die Groter Kaapstad-gebied. Eskom se voorsieningsgebiede is nie byhierdie projek ingesluit nie.

Die ontwerp-lewensduur van koopkragmeters is ongeveer 20 jaar, en die velddefekteby hierdie ouer meters het nou die stadium bereik waar beplande vervanging nodig is.Ongeveer 10% van koopkragmeters kwalifiseer vir vervanging, en die fokus sal aanvanklikwees op dié gebiede waar die meeste van hierdie ouer meters aangetref word.

Die Stad het Elex Khanyisa aangestel om hierdie vervangings oor die volgende drie jaarte behartig.

As ’n meter vervang moet word, sal ’n kennisgewing by die perseel afgelewer word om ’nafspraak daarvoor te versoek. Die Stad se hulpsentrumpersoneel sal oor besonderhede van diekennisgewing beskik, sou die kliënt die egtheid van die korrespondensie wou bevestig. Allepersoneel sal identiteitskaarte dra en duidelik gemerkte voertuie gebruik. Die metervervangingis gratis en verpligtend.

Six members of the Kuils River police clus-ter recently showed that they’re made oftougher stuff when they walked a full 75 kil-ometres in aid of building team spirit.

The annual Ladismith Cheese Kanna-land Endurance Walk took place over twodays (30 and 31 August), and the team com-pleted it in 11 hours and 58 minutes.

The team won themselves a bronze medalin the process, to the delight of supporters

and colleagues alike.“The name of the team was Kuils River

Perseverance,” said Capt NomathembaMuavha, spokeswoman for the cluster.

However, all the members were from theMfuleni police, she said.

The team leader said: “Yoh, it was tough!It was our first time, but it is not our lasttime. I learnt that it is very important towork as a team.”

The Portuguese Cultural and Welfare Cen-tre of Cape Town is hosting its annual Bless-ing of the Fishing Fleet Festival at the V&AWaterfront from 28 to 29 September.

Food stalls, a beer garden and entertain-ment will be on offer on the day.

Funds raised on the day will go towardthe needy and elderly Portuguese commu-nity.

The Blessing of the Fishing Fleet begancenturies ago in Mediterranean coastalfishing communities. The tradition is pre-

dominantly Catholic and a blessing fromthe local priest was meant to ensure protec-tion and bountiful catches. The ritual var-ies by community and for some it’s a multi-day fiesta including parades, pageantry,dancing, feasting and contests.

We’ve all had a bad customer experi-ence, but how many of us actuallytake it further? Under the Consum-

er Protection Act (CPA), you may be enti-tled to compensation.

Consumer Goods and Services Ombuds-man (CGSO) Adv Neville Melville, pointsout five common areas of consumer com-plaints and how to go about complaining.

Poor qualityConsumers may purchase goods only to

find that they are of poor quality or down-right defective.

“Under the CPA consumers are entitledto ask for the goods to be repaired, replacedor refunded if they are defective,” saysMelville. “The choice is the consumer’s –the retailer cannot force the consumer tohave the goods repaired if they want a re-fund or replacement.”

He adds that the consumer can also insiston a cash refund instead of a store credit,but they must return the goods within sixmonths of purchasing.

When buying online, be sure to read thesmall print. However, whatever the suppli-er’s return policy, if the goods are defective,the consumer is entitled to have them re-placed, returned or refunded.

And the supplier must cover the expensesof this.

“Make sure you keep your paperwork inorder, including your receipts if possible tomake the process easier.”

The shop won’t let me return my purchaseLoved that handbag yesterday, but

changed your mind today? That may not beenough to lodge a complaint against a retail-er.

“It’s a misnomer to think that a companymust take back goods you purchased ifthere’s nothing wrong with them,” saysMelville. “The Act only requires a supplierto accept a return if there was somethingwrong with the goods.”

However, a “cooling off period” of fivedays applies to direct marketing sales or tocredit transactions, such as purchasing acar, where there is a written agreement inplace. Purchasing goods using your creditcard counts as a cash sale.

“If there is nothing wrong with the goods,the retailer can also insist on a till slip asproof of purchase or for the original packag-ing to accept a return,” says Melville.

“Most reputable retailers have a returnspolicy in place, which may specify a timelimit for returns, usually up to about amonth.”

Caught in marketer’s trapCompanies use marketing tactics such as

sales and promotions to get customersthrough the door. But if you arrive, only to

be told they’ve run out of the advertisedstock, you may have grounds for a com-plaint.

Under the CPA, retailers must ensurethat they have sufficient stock to meet rea-sonably anticipated demand for any prod-ucts that are promoted or advertised.

“If a companyadvertises goods at a specif-ic price and runs out of stock, they can beheld liable for ‘baiting’ consumers,” saysMelville. “If the consumer can show this,they have grounds for complaint or can de-mand goods of a comparable quality andvalue.”

Contaminated foodstuffIf you have suffered from food poisoning

after eating contaminated food, then youmay be entitled to claim compensation un-der the CPA.

“You may be able to claim expenses suchas those related to hospitalisation, othermedical costs, and loss of income while youare ill,” says Melville.

However, a doctor’s note saying you’vehad an upset stomach is unlikely to get youfar.

“Again keep your till slip and collect asmuch evidence as possible, including labo-ratory tested specimens and if possible,freeze any left food so it can be tested forbacteria,” says Melville.

Late deliveryYoupaidupfront for that lounge suite, but

it still hasn’t been delivered months later?Consumers are entitled to receive theirgoods within a reasonable timeframe. Ifyou’re buying groceries online, this maymean within a day – while purchasing fur-niture may require a longer lead time of upto about six weeks.

“If your bank account is being debited forgoods you have not yet received, don’t sim-ply stoppaying as this couldhave anegativeimpact on your credit rating, but ratherlodge a complaint first,” says Melville.

He explains that most complaints thatcome through to the CGSO are the result ofpoor complaints resolution by companies.

This includes consumers not being ableto contact the company; being kept waitingfor an unreasonable period of time for ananswer; rude or unhelpful customer servicestaff; and being given conflicting advice onthe status of the complaint.

DIE GEÏNTEGREERDEONTWIKKELINGSPLAN (GOP) EN

BEGROTING VIR 2013/14Die Stad Kaapstad gaan begin met sy proses vir die hersiening van die vyfjaarplan vir 2012 –2015 met die oog op die geïntegreerde ontwikkelingsplan (GOP) en begroting vir 2014/2015.

Dit sal die tweede hersiening van die ampstermyn-plan wees wat op 28 Mei 2012 deur dieRaad goedgekeur is.

Die tydsraamwerk vir die GOP en begroting vir 2013/14 bevat ’n uiteensetting van dieaktiwiteite verbonde aan die opstel van die begroting en hersiene GOP vir 2014/15. Die doelvan die hersiening van die GOP is om te verseker dat die evaluering van prestasiemetings endie mate waarin veranderende omstandighede dit noodsaak, by munisipale beplanning in aggeneem word.

Celebrating “100 blooming years” Kirst-enbosch and the Botanical Society ofSouth Africa are enjoying a momen-

tous landmark year. The Botanical Art Bien-nale (biennial) until 15 September will, with-out doubt, be one of the high points of thisyear.

Taking place in the conference centre atKirstenbosch, this centenary event show-cases top South African botanical artists aswell as artists from different parts of theglobe.

These include Lise Hofmeyr, a young CapeTown based artist from Kuils River.

She obtained a four-year fine arts degreeand an honours degree in visual arts (illus-tration) from Stellenbosch University.

During her honours course, she got intro-duced to botanical illustration and fell inlove with it. She has a passion for art andnature, and can express both intereststhrough botanical and scientific illustra-tions.

Lise is currently doing a Post GraduateCertificate in Education (PGCE) at Stellen-bosch University.

New plantsDuring her studies, she started freelanc-

ing as an illustrator and a photographer. In2011 and 2012, she illustrated eight new plantspecies (Oxalis) for the botany departmentof Stellenbosch University.

These artworks were published in two sci-entific journals, Blumea and Phytotaxa, re-spectively, in 2012.

According to a press release from Kirsten-

bosch, the Biennale this year focuses on themedicinal and traditional use of plants ofsouthern Africa, including plants used forfood, shelter, decoration, adornment,health, devotional rituals and rites of pas-sage.

The 2013 exhibition is the seventh since itsinception in 2000 and the extraordinary ar-tistic challenges that confront artists in thisgenre are apparent in the intricate detailpresented in the artworks.

From fine monochrome pencil drawingsto delicate watercolour, the media used bythe artists range from copper etchings andscraperboard through to pastel, pen and alsoink.

While the paintings are complex the view-er is drawn to the simple beauty of the plantsand to the fact that these same plants haveinspired many generations of botanical art-ists to record with extraordinary accuracythe wealth of southern African flora.

International artists Kath Baker andLeigh-Ann Gale (UK), Suzana Souza (Brazil)and Suellen Perold (USA) add interest to theline-up of exhibitors.

ArtistsWell known artists such as Eric Judd, Sol-

ly Gutman, Carol Reddick and Gillian Condyare joined by first time exhibitor Ann Kerr,while visitors will delight in the fine rendi-tions from Lisa Strachen (Durbanville), LiseHofmeyr (Kuils River), Willie Schlechter(Bellville), Jenny Hyde-Johnson, JeanetteLoedolff, and Wilna Eloff.

Many more feature in the more than 50 art-ist line-up.

An additional highlight is the work ofCape-based Margaret de Villiers, who re-cently won a gold medal and best on showat the annual Royal Horticultural Society’sBotanical Art show in London.

The 4Give Ministries Solutionschurch from Kuils River is planninga march that they hope will create an“uproar”.

They call it a march with a differ-ence, because they will intentionallybe stopping three times to pray.

“If you are really concerned aboutthe crime situation in our area, youwill support this uproar event,” saidCheryl Collins, event convenor.

“The theme for this event is: ‘Jesusis the answer for this world’,” she said.

Interested co-walkers are invited tobring their own anti-crime banner,flag and water bottle.

“We are going to war. Come and letus take hands and make our communi-ty a safe community,” she said.

Cheryl asked the community to prayfor the event and to join them withfriends and family to strengthen thenumbers against crime.

He was part of one of South Africa’s biggestrock exports, Dorp, but Kevin Floyd is stead-ily carving out a place for himself in his newproject.

Kevin started The Kevin Floyd Project af-ter returning to South Africa about threeyears ago.

He had previously spent 11 years in the UKwith Dorp.

“We were pretty big in South Africa backin the late 90s,” Kevin says of the alternativeband.

“We kind of reached the ceiling of wherewe thought we could reach in South Africa,so we went over to England,” Kevin ex-

plains.After a few years overseas, the band man-

aged to get to a big record deal. “We werelucky enough to tour around Europe andAmerica and record a few albums,” Kevinadds.

He is currently in the process of recordinghis own album with The Kevin Floyd Band,which includes bassist Rob Stemmett anddrummer, Pieter Heyns.

“I’m about halfway through recording analbum,” Kevin says, adding: “Songs that Ihad written many years ago, and some newsongs that I’ve written now.

A song he is promoting is “Forever Mande-la”, which he recorded with a choir fromIkhaya Le Themba Orphanage in Khayelit-sha.

“I have a two-year old daughter and whenMadiba was in hospital, they asked the ques-tion on TV: ‘What would the country be likeif he had never existed?’ and it got me think-ing, what would South Africa be like todayfor my daughter, if he had never existed?”

“I think it was the quickest song I’ve everwritten,” he says, adding: “I wrote the wholesong, chords, lyrics, everything, in about sixminutes.”

“It turned out to be probably the song I’mmost proud of,” Kevin says,
