A newly formed safety forum which willattempt to address all kinds of socialills in Kuils River.

The members of the forum were intro-duced to the officers at the local police sta-tion last week.

Captain Isaac van Niekerk, spokespersonfor the Kuils River police, said law enforce-ment authorities and community based or-ganisations all form part of the new forum.

He said the law enforcement authorities

participating in the process include the localpolice station along with the City of CapeTown’s Metro Police, Law Enforcement andTraffic departments.

Van Niekerk said the forum’s mission isto ensure that synergies are realisedthrough co-operation between law enforce-ment authorities and other relevant struc-tures in Kuils River on issues relating tocommunity safety, social issues, health andsecurity.

This will be secured through a Memoran-dum of Agreement (MoA) which will besigned by the leaders of the various teams

and organisations.“The safety forum is not replicating the

functions of the Community Police Forum(CPF).

“It is an all-purpose forum focusing on is-sues relating to community safety, social is-sues, health and security,” Van Niekerksaid.

The core structure of the forum includesthe various heads of the Kuils River law en-forcement authorities. They are colonel Dys-on Jacobs (Kuils River police), chief inspec-tor Cedric Cornelius (Traffic), chief GodferyCrowster (Law Enforcement), senior super-

intendent Andrew Ball (Metro Police), coun-cillor Jacob Jacobs, Angela Frans (KuilsRiver CPF) and Riedwaan Daniels (Sector 3CPF).

Riedwaan Daniels, chairperson of the Sec-tor 3 CPF, explained in an interview on Fri-day that the aim of the forum is to synchro-nise the efforts between all the law enforce-ment agencies in Kuils River. He said it’s notso much about the safety, “but broader thanthat.” He continued by saying that problemssuch as homelessness and street childrenwill also form part of the forum’s focus.

“We will involve the youth forums, the chur-ches as well,” Daniels said.

He reiterated that the forum will not repla-ce the CPF but offer its support and work to-gether with it.

Angela Frans, deputy chair of the Kuils Ri-ver CPF, welcomed the initiative.She saidthe safety forum will strengthen the CPF’srole in the community.

“The forum will give attention to the com-munity’s complaints to which the CPF can-not attend. These will include the non-seri-ous crimes and social issues residents mighthave,” she said.

Some of the issues they wish to address,she said, include street children and trolleypushers who she says aren’t even from thearea in most cases.

“We want to find a solution how to addressthis. We cannot leave these issues just toLaw Enforcement, the Metro Police or thepolice. They too have their hands full withother more serious complaints,” she said.

A community project to help uplift andmotivate young teenage girls recentlystarted in Kuils River.

Several young girls from different com-munities have attended a series of work-shops where they were motivated by highranking and influential women mostly inthe world of business.

The project, I am Leadership is the brain-child of community worker, AnnekeScheepers. It started as a pilot project to in-troduce girls between grades 8 and 12 to selfdevelopment expertise.

“We host free Saturday workshops at theKuils River Golf Club where we facilitatesessions to develop a sense of empowermentamongst these girls.

“To date we have been joined by an amaz-ing facilitator from the Dale Carnegie Insti-tute, Sharen Russell, who hosted a great ses-sion with the participants on how to interactwell with others.

“A diplomat, Shari Cupido, who is basedin Brussels and is originally from Paarl,spoke about her road to success, while a ca-reer guidance councillor, Annette Millerfrom Working Life in Claremont discussedthe very important aspect of planning yourfuture,” Anneke said.

At the last workshop held on Saturday, 6September, the group was joined by Bever-ley Mokoena, who works at Standard Bank.Mokoena spoke about independence and thesacrifices we make to be successful.

Rebecca Pillay from Alan Gray OrbisFoundation, a bursary and mentorship pro-gramme, also spoke to the girls about the im-

portance of mentorship.The girls hail from Eerste River, Blue

Downs, Mfuleni and Tafelsig in MitchellsPlain.

“We contacted schools and community or-ganisations to ask whether they could ex-tend the invitation to their students andgirls of this age group. The workshop wasmeant to run for three weekends but thegirls had benefited so much that I want totake it as far as possible,” Anneke said.

Further sessions will be held next year.“This was the pilot stage of the project,”

Reports of possible stone throwing at KuilsRiver train station came to light this month.

“Beware of stone throwers on Kuils RiverStation,” one commuter said recently viaTwitter, referring to a specific incident oftwo weeks ago. Riana Scott, spokespersonfor Metrorail, however told TygerBurgerthis week that no such incidents have beenreported. Asked about where and when thelast reported incident occurred, Scott said:“These are sporadic, usually during protestaction or school holidays. The previous inci-

dent that occurred on the Northern Linewas between Kuils River and Bellville stati-on on 1 August at 15:20. No reports of stone throwers near station 270 nabbed in Kuils RiverA total of 270 suspects were arrested thispast week in the Kuils River policecluster. Captain Isaac van Niekerk said25 houses were searched for drugs. Atotal of 128l of alcohol, mandrax tabletswith a street value of R2 500, tik ofR18 500 and dagga to the value of R3 000have been confiscated.In the 29 tracingoperations 17 suspects have been arrestedas a result. He said 224 suspects havebeen arrested in connection with seriouscrimes, while 46 others were arrested forless serious offences.

Businessman gunneddown in BlackheathThe Mfuleni police are investigatingthe murder case of a Blackheath busi-nessman who was gunned down at hisoffices recently. The murder took pla-ce on Friday 5 September around 17:00in Range Road, Blackheath. The decea-sed has been identified as HeinrichFisch, a local tow-truck owner. Having a disability has never kept thisyoung woman from reaching for thestars.

Instead, Terniel Oppel (26) has been in-spired to carve out a career for herself asa model.

Terniel grew up in Kleinvlei near EersteRiver, and believes not being able to hearhas given her other strengths to draw from.For one, her beautiful smile has stood herin good stead – as this smile shone throughwhen she won Miss Western Cape 2014.

Terniel was selected from of a group offive as the overall winner. All the other con-testants are able to hear and being trium-phant is a huge feather in her cap, saysTerniel. “They called my name. I could nothear. I looked around.

“They said it is you. I could not believeit. I began to cry. I was very happy.

“I cannot believe it because this wasagainst hearing people.”

Inspired by her teacherThe competition was held in Brackenfell

on Saturday, 6 September.Terniel, an aspiring teacher, said she

hopes to enter more such competitions.“Ever since I was little, I loved it,” Terniel

said using sign language. She loves model-ling, especially the glamourous photos andbeautiful clothes.

When asked what inspired her as a youngchild to choose modelling, she immediatelypoints to her teacher, Maria Siwertsen whoassisted TygerBurger with interpreting theinterview on Friday.

“Maria encouraged me to participate inthe Miss Deaf Western Cape competition,

where I had my first success,” says Terniel.Maria says: “Terniel has the natural abil-

ity to model. We are very proud of her.”Terniel also won Miss Deaf South Africa

and came fourth in the Miss Deaf WorldPageant in 2007 which was held in Prague.

Maria replied that she always believed in

Terniel. She also helped her design and sewthe dress she wore on the big night of thepageant.

Just a normal dress“The other girls all had fancy dresses. I

had a normal dress.“I did not think I would win because my

clothes were not as pretty as theirs. Now Iunderstand that it isnot importantwhat thedress looks like, but the person inside, thatis important,” Terniel added.

She said the first part of the competitionwas somewhat difficult. “The interpreterhad to lip read. But I had a friend thathelped. It was fine,” she said.

Among the prizes she won was a getawayat a hotel, cosmetics, hair products and aMiss Western Cape 2014 certificate.

Terniel was born in Springbok in theNorthern Cape but grew up in Kleinvlei.She lost her ability to hear at the age of 18months due to contracting meningitis. Shejoined the Dominican School for the Deafnear Wynberg at the age of 4 years.

So far, Terniel has completed her studiesin beauty therapy and Computer Studies atthe National Institute for the Deaf inWorcester.

In June she returned to the DominicanSchool in Wittebome where she is currentlyassisting with computer classes.

“In this way I can plough back into thecommunity, something I enjoy,” she says.

Although she plans to become a teacher,she also hopes to continue furthering hermodelling career and in so doing, raiseawareness about being deaf.

Juanita Smith, organiser of the MissWestern Cape event said: “At Role ModelsSA we believe that everyone can make a dif-ference.”

A family dog was killed in the back-yard, while the family was inside thehouse, unaware of what was taking

place.The family from Aurora is still shocked

at finding their dog dead in the yard of theirhouse in High Street on Sunday afternoon.

Raqual van Wyk wrote on Facebook lastweek that they had just returned home fromfamily after celebrating her husband’sbirthday at 15:00.

“We opened the doors, to let the kids andmy dog, Zack have a run outside while wesettled in. The kids came in to watch TVwith us, but we left Zack outside as we hadhim indoors the whole morning while wewere out. He was running around, chasingthe pigeons; barking at the kids walking by.

being a normal dog,” Raqual wrote.“My husband got up to tell him to settle

down, and just as he sat down we heard themost horrific cry. Thinking that he hadhurt himself somehow we all went runningto see him.“My husband got to him first and screamedthat I must keep the kids away. Seeing thelook of panic on my husband’s face as hetried to get the door open, and looking downat the fear in my five-year-old’s eyes issomething I will never forget,” she recalled.

Van Wyk told TygerBurger that Zack waslike a member of the family. The BorderCollie Labrador cross entered their lives asa puppy when they got him at an adopt-a-petday at Stodels as a birthday gift for theirson. According to Raqual, about fourmonths ago, a neighbour complained aboutthe dog barking. Then, about two monthsago, they received a letter from the munici-pality that they must do something aboutthe barking or they will be fined. “We askedmany of our neighbours if our dog is bother-ing them, but they did not have a problem,”she said.

After the letter, they kept Zack inside thehouse about 90% of the time, she said.

After an autopsy was performed at Tyger-berg Animal Hospital, an air gun pellet wasfound in the dog’s heart.“Our children wereonly metres away in the house when Zackwas shot,”she says. “My husband and par-ents had to soothe my loving boy while Zackasphyxiated in his own blood. It was grue-some and traumatic,” she said.

Col Marius Swanepoel said the bulletmust still go for ballistic tests to ascertainwhich firearm was used, but that it lookslike a bullet from an air gun. “People do notneed a licence for an air gun,” he warned.Charges of malicious damage to propertyand firing a firearm in a residential area isbeing investigated.In the meantime the sto-ry has spread like wildfire on social media,Raqual said. One Facebook user even of-fered a R500 reward for any information.

ning ontvang,” het hy gesê.Gevra oor haar mening van die kompeti-

sie, het Vanessa geantwoord: “Dis eintlik ’nwonderlike inisiatief wat daarop gemik isom onderwysers te motiveer om hul eie on-derwyspraktyke te verbeter – en dan ook omerkenning te gee vir al die harde werk watons as onderwysers doen. Dis lekker.

“Dit was vir my ’n wonderlike geleentheidwaarin ek die kans gekry het om na my eieonderwyspraktyk te kyk, en te sien waar ekdinge reg doen en waar daar leemtes is enek kan verbeter.”

skool Settllers in Bellville gehou.Die streekkompetisie vind later vanjaar

plaas, waarna die nasionale kompetisie ge-hou sal word.

“Dis nogal ’n strawwe kompetisie. Daar isongelooflike onderwysers wat uitstekendewerk doen.

“Die feit dat hullemygekieshet,wasnogal’n verrassing.

“Ek voel baie bevoorreg omdat ek besefhoe ’n groot eer dit is. Hulle kon enige vanmy ander kollegas gekies het, want almal le-wer uitstekende werk,” het sy gesê.

Gevra wat sy die meeste van haar werk ge-niet, het sy gesê: “Die kinders. Ek is lief virkinders in die algemeen en dis hoekom ekbesluit het om onderwys my beroep te maak.

“Dan is ek ook passievol oor onderrig. Disvir my belangrik. Ek wil die kinders help omdie beste te word wat hulle kan. Ek wil hêelke kind moet sy volle potensiaal bereik. Ekgeniet hulle baie.

“Kinders het nog daai onskuld en hulle lagnog vir my grappe,” het sy skertsend gesê.

Vanessa is al elf jaar in die onderwys enbied onder meer Afrikaans as eerste addisio-nele taal, Engels as huistaal, geskiedenis,natuurwetenskappe en tegnologie en le-wensoriëntering aan.

The matric ball at Silversands High Schoolin Kuils River has been cancelled.

This follows a decision taken by parentsand personnel due to the bad behaviour oflearners at the school, said the principal,Nathan Cupido.

Parents and some learners approached themedia a week ago to voice their unhappinessabout the decision.

When asked to comment, Cupido said theschool took a “firm decision” not to host theball, which was a majority decision taken byall the school’s staff.

“It’s not only about the results. We had theparents in recently and had one on one dis-cussions with them.The parents made the de-cision in the second term already. They madethe decision and we endorsed it,” Cupidosaid.

He said it appears that one or two parentsare now complaining to the media. Cupidosaid the children had delivered poor examand test results in March already.

“The decision to cancel the ball was be-cause of the behaviour and attitude of thechildren. “The matric ball is not a right, itis a privilege,” he emphasised.

The school will however be holding a vale-dictory service later in the year for the mat-rics.

In an e-mail, Paddy Attwell, spokespersonfor the Western Cape department of Educa-tion said “According to the school, the matricball was cancelled because of the learners’lack of cooperation, attitude and behaviour.The school has denied claims that Silver-sands cancelled the ball because of poormarks.

“According to the principal, the teachersdecided unanimously to recommend cancel-ling the ball.”

Attwell said the school has informed par-ents about the decision.

The high school was expected to relocatefrom its current location in Highbury to anew building near Bardale Village earlierthis year. This move, according to the princi-pal, has been postponed until the end of theyear.

At the crack of dawn, while the morn-ing mist still lies thick on the ground,the first riders arrive to groom their

horses. The stables come alive as ridingboots are polished, coats brushed andmanes plaited.

The riders emerge in their crisp whitejodhpurs, smart red and black jackets andblack equestrian caps to saddle up. This isa pageant of custom.

Ten minutes later the hunting horn sig-nals and the huntsman bellows out: “Gath-er round, gather round!” The horses whin-ny as the hounds start to howl in anticipa-tion. The hunt is about to begin.

You will be forgiven for thinking thisnarrative describes the start of fox-huntingseason in Britain at the turn of the 19th cen-tury. But in fact TygerBurger joined a mod-ern ‘fox hunt’ on the plains of Joosten-bergvlakte on Sunday.

A large group of members of the CapeHunt Club (the oldest hunting club outsideof England) turned up at Horses Equestri-an Centre to revel in this age-old sport, stillkeenly supported in Cape Town.

Draghunting is anon-competitive, cross-country equestrian sport in which ridersfollow foxhounds trained to follow a laidtrail of scent. The exciting course usuallyincludes numerous jumps and some natu-ral hazards such as river crossings. Thetrail of about 10 km is laid out in six legsfor riders and hounds to take rests in be-tween.

Colleen gives a brief explanation of howthe modern version of a hunt is practisedtoday. “In modern times foxes aren’t hunt-ed anymore and we use what is called adrag – a cloth scented with jackal urine,”she explains.“It is pulled by the dragsmanwho rides out with the drag on a rope, fourminutes before the hunt starts. The hunts-man, who is in charge of the hounds, willthen ‘lay’ the hounds on the scent with thehuntmaster leading the riders,” she says.

Before starting off, each rider quickly

swallows down the traditional stirrup cup(usually whisky or liqueur) while the drags-man goes ahead with the drag. Then, exactlyfour minutes later, the hounds are on theirway, while excited spectators are driven outahead in off road vehicles to get a good van-tage point. On a hillside near the end of thefirst leg, the vehicles come a stop and specta-tors wait in hushed excitement for thehounds and the first riders to come aroundthe corner.

Their patience is soon rewarded when aminute later the pack of hounds chargearound the corner with 21 riders on horse-back, hot on their heels.

Holly Miller (15) from Edgemead has par-ticipated in four hunts. “It is all about vibe!The hounds, the fast ride, the clothing andthe entire tradition of the day,” she says.

The energetic hounds are bred for theirstrong hunting instincts and keen sense ofsmell. It is fascinating to watch them followthe scent, and if they lose it for a few secondsit is soon picked up again.

“At the age of five months we start takingthem on puppy walks and at eight monthsthey are coupled with an older hound. Sothey essentially teach each other to hunt,”says Colleen. On the last stretch hounds andhorses stop at a small farm dam for a quickdip. “It doesn’t matter how many hunts youhave done, it always remains challengingand therein lies the adrenalin rush,” saysrider Sonet Geyer.

“It is a very fast paced gallop and you haveto concentrate all the time. You have to crossrivers and ditches on terrain where 4x4sdon’t even go and although the hounds leadthe way, you as a rider still have to be in fullcontrol of your horse and react quickly toany situation,” she says.

In essence the sport mimics the tradition-al British fox hunt, which in its originalform, due to the cruelty to animals, has beenbanned in theUnitedKingdomover adecadeago.

Her decisions have seen her grapple witha drug addiction, being separated from herchildren, breaking up her family and evenspending a few weeks behind bars.

Yet today, Lilian Andrews (47) uses whatshe learnt from these experiences to educa-te youngsters. She operates her own crecheand aftercare where she looks after smallchildren. She also runs a Sunday schoolprogramme at her church to educate child-ren about the difference between right andwrong.

Lilian told one of the parents, MninaweDaweti, that she had found life difficult af-ter being retrenched, which led to her get-ting addicted to hard-core drugs.

“I have three children and was marriedfor 12 years,”she says. “I took my eyes offJesus and that was the time when Ifell. . . that was the time the devil startedusing me. I never drank or smoked beforethat.”

She later went on to sell drugs from herWesbank home. “My husband and I bothstarted doing it and that is how our housestarted falling apart.” Lilian had been ren-ting out her house as an income. She moved

in with her sister in Retreat where her lifecontinued on a downward spiral.

This culminated in spending a month inPollsmoor Prison while her children stayedwith her sister. “Before going to prison I be-came reborn. I started ministering in pri-son. We worked with the inmates,” she said.

After her release she joined the Enon Ta-bernacle Baptist Church in Melton Rosewhere she continued working with the in-mates. She also started a children’s minis-try and helps with rehabilitation program-mes at her church.“I asked the Lord to usemy life to beablessing for others.The thingsteenagers do today for drugs is tragic,” sheexplained.

Lilian now encourages children to stayaway from substance abuse, regardless oftheir living conditions.

“My house was broken down and I wasthe cause of it. I was the pillar in the house.I always told my daughter that mommy willbounce back.”Lilian wanted to move out ofWesbank, but decided otherwise. She nowtakes care of at least 26 children daily, someof whose parents cannot afford the monthlyfee.“The Lord gave me a second chance inlife, and I am taking it with both hands,”said Lilian who has so far completed sever-al courses to further empower herself.

Academy and Centurion Academy in Bell-ville on Wednesday, so Cecilia Hume tookone for the team the very next day.

The #ALSIceBucketChallenge is a globalinitiative aimed at promoting awarenessand generating funds for research foramyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disea-se.

Participants are dared to film themsel-ves having a bucket of iced water pouredover their heads or forfeit by donating mo-ney to a local organisation that deals withALS, a motor neurone disease (MND).

Although TygerBurger have taken thechallenge, the newspaper will also be ma-king a monetary donation to The South Af-rican Motor Neurone Disease Association.

A worthy causeALS is a motor neuron disease (MND)

where the motor neurons, made up of milli-ons of nerve nuclei in the brainstem andspine, degenerate. This causes muscle we-akness and stiffness as well as resistancetomovement andchanges in reflexes. It canalso result in difficulty speaking, swallo-wing, and breathing.

Most people with MND are over the ageof 50, but it can also affect people in their20s or 30s. It usually presents itself in diffe-rent ways depending on the groups of mus-cle fibres that start degenerating, but oncediagnosed; patients usually have a life ex-pectancy of one to five years.

Although research is ongoing, there isstill no cure for MND, only treatments tohelp with symptoms.

One often reads and hearsabout motorcyclists’ involve-ment in road accidents – moreoften than not, the cause of theaccident is placed at the feet ofthe other road user.

While sitting in peak hourtraffic on a national road lastweek, I was really annoyed atthe number of bikers zig-zag-ging their way through thegridlocked traffic.

With my senses on highalert, I noticed most motorcy-clists would either speed pastvehicles in the gap betweenlanes, or manoeuvre their waythrough the traffic to get to thefront. They also seem to forcetheir way into turning lanes atrobots or stop-streets, withlittle or no regard for othermotorists.

Understandably, their chosenmode of transport allows themto skip the traffic which we, togreat frustration have toendure. A little respect whilemeandering through vehicleswould be appreciated.

The grand dame of the Cape Winelands, re-cently underwent a richly deserved face-lift.

Since Lanzerac was founded in 1692, theestate has changed hands several times butmade its mark in 1961 with the release ofthe world’s first commercially produced Pi-notage. Two years earlier, the iconic Lanze-rac Rosé in its famous tear-shaped bottle,saw the light and quickly became a natio-nal favourite. Today this wine is nothingshort of legendary.

Reposition is all about changing thelives of the people around themthrough music.

Manager and multi instrumentalist, JodyJason “JJ” Petersen, describes this KuilsRiver band band as a group of young, like-minded musicians.

The band came together in 2010, when thefive were attending His People Church inKuils River, glorifying in music and songonce a week. It was then that they decidedthat “Sundays weren’t enough” for them.

The decision came after JJ and drummer,Julian Maree played a jazz show together.They soon roped Ashleigh Lubbe in to singvocals before enlisting brothers Michael(keyboards and synth) and Robin Thompson(bass).

Robin, an anthropology student, came upwith the name Reposition, which reflects theband’s desire to reposition people back to aplace of good morals and values. The bandtries to put out a positive message, hopingtheir good example will help bring aboutpositive change in the lives of young chil-dren who look up to them.

“We’re a mixed marsala”The band describes themselves as a band

for hire and a people’s band playing whatev-er their audience calls for, but they’ve alsorecently started writing their own music.

“It’s basically jazz,” Ashleigh says, beforequickly adding that that’s not all they do.“We’re a mixed marsala kind of band,” shesays as there are also a lot of love songs intheir repertoire. “We love love,” she says.

The band has a passion for helping thecommunity. Ashleigh points out that theircommunity always support them and pushthem forward. In this way, Reposition doeswhatever they can to help organisations,communities and other bands grow, just asthey have.

They recently opened a club in Stikland,called Soul 6 as a platform for up and comingacts. “It’s hard for an artist in Cape Townto get work,” says Ashleigh, so they’veopened the club to encourage a performanceplatform. They also give these artists chanceto perform alongside bigger names, like CanSkylark and Ashley Davids.

The group’s dream is to develop Soul 6 intoa full-scale dinner theatre with an artsschool on the side. The group is also individ-ually involved with music development.Ashleigh is a vocal coach for the Departmentof Arts and Culture’s mass participation: op-portunity and access, development andgrowth (MOD) programme. Julian hostsdrum clinics and Robin, Michael and JJplays for other community projects likeSounds of the Nations. The band is startingto evolve by working on writing their ownsongs with the eye on recording in the nearfuture. The City of Cape Town’s Wa-ter and Sanitation Depart-ment will be conducting its

annual water service qualitysurvey for the next threemonths.

The intention of the survey isto indicate to the City the levelof service satisfaction among itscommunities, as well as the res-pective service disciplines thatrequire improvement.

Devnomics (Developmentno-mics Pty Ltd.) has been appoin-ted to conduct the research sur-vey in eight districts across thecity: South Peninsula, Tyger-berg/Bellville, Khayelitsha,Helderberg/Kuils River, Mit-chells Plain, Kraaifontein/Blaauwberg, Central CapeTown and Klipfontein, to be con-cluded in November 2014.

Assessing water consumptionThe survey will be conducted

in two ways – either telephoni-cally or face-to-face by surveystaff visiting the respective sur-vey areas.

The survey sample will inclu-de 1 000 formal settlement resi-dents, 600 informal settlementresidents and 300 businesses.They will also assess theamount of water that is used onthese premises.

“The city falls within a waterscarce region and this exercisewill provide us with a better un-derstanding of where we can

continue to improve on our ser-vices. Furthermore it will equipthe City with the necessary in-formation on water consumpti-on patterns and behaviour,”said Ernest Sonnenberg, maycomember for Utility Services.

This survey forms part of theWater and Sanitation Depart-ment’s customer service char-ter, ensuring that the City conti-nues to provide a top qualityservice and product to its resi-dents.

‘We want to remain the bestwater services provider’

“We want to remain the bestwater service provider in thecountry. This can only be achie-ved by working together withour residents and through ongo-ing dialogue.

“Furthermore, it may assistus in saving more water and itputs the customers – our resi-dents – at the centre of all ouractions,’ said Sonnenberg.

The survey staff will wear therequired identification tag con-taining the City’s logo, a photoof the surveyor, and the projectdetails, in order for them to begranted access to the premiseswhich form part of the surveysample.

Sonnenberg requested the re-sidents in the survey areas toparticipate as it will assist theCity in providing a better servi-ce.

The International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Western Province hosted the SA championships from 10­13 September at the Grand Arena at GrandWest. The contest proved to be one of thebest shows ever hosted at a world class venue. Western Province won the team trophy and secured several national champions and top­three spots. Ravin Kolbe won the juniors u­23 under 75kgdivision. Sheldon Valjalo won the men’s physique up to 170cm and Oscar Ratya won the welterweight division. Nurturing talent at cricket schoolCome January next year, one of the

most famous and picturesque cricketgrounds in the world will become

home to a high school.The Western Province Cricket Associa-

tion (WPCA), in partnership with Stone-fountain Colleges, announced the openingof Newlands Cricket High School lastweek.

Shaheed Shaik, the founder and directorof the new school, says the school willbroaden the platform for talented cricketplayers, so that more players of value canproceed through the local cricketing sys-tem. “There are currently four very promi-nent cricket schools in town, but disadvan-taged players cannot afford to attend theseschools,” he says.

“The objective of the new school’s man-agement team is to arrange scholarshipsfor nine players from disadvantaged back-grounds, thus ensuring that money is notthe most important criteria when deciding

which players will be accepted at the topcricket institutions.”

The school will be following the provin-cial education department’s curriculumand will be accepting Grade 8 and Grade9 pupils for next year. In this way, theschool will grow by a grade every year. “Af-ter five years, the school should have atleast 45 well-developed disadvantagedplayers vying for provincial selection onmerit, rather than opting for the very un-popular quota system,” says Shaik.

It will also use the facilities ofWestern Province Cricket Club, a merestone’s throw away from the stadium. “Ap-

plicants will be assessed in terms of theircricket ability by coaches on the school’sstaff and only those players with an aboveaverage ability to play cricket will be ac-cepted. Players who show real potentialbut who have fully not developed, will alsobe considered,” reads the statement.

Passionate about the game“Teaching staff will be registered with

the South African Council of Educators,while cricket coaches will be at least LevelTwo compliant coaches. The school’s coreactivity will be cricket development andplayers will be exposed to the best possibleprogrammes, workshops and practice ses-sions.”

The pupils will also will be exposed tomany forms of cricket and will play match-es in the WPCA schools and clubs competi-tion. They will also tour around the coun-tryandhost touring teams fromaround theworld.

“Playerswill not lose out on schoolwork,as teachers will be touring with the play-ers, ensuring that the academic pro-gramme continues,” Shaik says.

WPCA general manager Nabeal Dienpraises Shaik for his “forward thinking” interms of cricket development and educa-tion. “He is passionate about educationand more passionate about the game ofcricket,” Dien says.

“It is my contention that with his vast ex-perience and passion for education andcricket, this initiative will provide a natu-ral fit for ensuring a successful cricketschool.

“The WPCA is excited about this initia-tive and its implementation, as we have al-ways subscribed to these values of educa-tion, access and opportunity.”

Met hierdie vertoning het Stellenbergandermaal die kroon gespan op ’n baiesuksesvolle jaar.

Milnerton Aquatic Club (Mac) will be par-ticipating in a global sailing event, knownas Bart’s Bash, on Sunday 21 September.

Sailing clubs from all around the worldwill be racing on the same day to set a newGuinness World Record for the biggestnumber of boats sailing at the same timearound the world.

In order for Mac to qualify, the club musthave a minimum of 25 boats racing. Bart’sBash is now open to all sailors for an entryfee of R50 for adults and R20 for children.

Funds raisedwill go towards theAndrew

Simpson Sailing Foundation in honour of An-drew ‘Bart’ Simpson who passed away in a sai-ling accident at the America’s Cup. Andrewwas a Gold and Silver Olympic Medallist. Sai-lors need to register online at www.barts-bash.co.uk/login-select to qualify for the race.
