MATRICS: DELFT SCHOOL GATHERS ANOTHER AWARD FOR THEIR PASS RATE
Hindle aims highGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
Hindle High School in Delft is provingtheir matrics have the ability to excelfollowing the school claiming another
award for improving their percentage passin the province for 2014.
While the school only started in 2009, theyhave a proud record of matric passes and re-ceived an award for their increases in the
category for improvement ever since theirfirst matric class in 2012.
Principal Calvin Manchest beams withpride when acknowledging the achieve-ment.
“At Hindle High we all work together tomake a difference in the lives of ourlearners,” he said.
“From our humble beginnings in pre-fabclasses we have always focussed on makingour learners realise that there is no bounda-
ry to their potential in life - it just takes hardwork.
“In 2012 we had our first matriculants (32learners) and we had a pass rate of 71,8%,with our top learner Michael Booysenachieving an A in tourism.
“The next year we had 40 learners and a95,8% pass rate with the top learner, Court-ney Pakeman, achieving five B’s.
“Last year we had 80 learners and a 92,4%pass rate.
“The highlight is that Kwanda Silekwaachieved four A’s, including 100% in MathLit.”
Manchest said while all the staff playedtheir part in motivating learners, a catalystwas also the involvement of Dr Izanette vanSchalkwyk who introduced some major ac-tivities to motivate the learners.
“We have been blessed with the involve-ment of this special lady,” he says.

“Her involvement in the school is invalua-ble. Her Blue Bus ministry at the schoolgives the learners so many opportunities toadd to their educational experience.“These programmes, which also deal with
youth at risk, are tied in with our ongoingcareer guidance with Northlink, Damelin,Boland College, the University of the FreeState,UCT,UWCandother institutions, giveour learners the best opportunities availa-ble. It gives them a goal to work towards.”Educational camps were also held to give
learners more help in study methods.Manchest added that once the learners left
the school itwasnot the endof their relation-ship.“Our doors are never closed to them, they
are part of our family,” he says.Proof of this was that 2012 top learner
Michael Booysen was visiting the schoolfrom theUniversity of theFree State tomoti-
vate learners.“He is one of our positive role models and
if children see what he is achieving we hopethat it inspires them,” continues Manchest.“At the moment we are trying to assist
Kwanda, who is going to study IT, becausethe family had to borrow money for his reg-istration, but the rest of the fees are goingto be a problem.“He was not able to get a bursary and we
are determined to try to help him. My hopeis that we can get partnerships going withbusiness to start a bursary fund here be-cause there are so many who need help tofurther their studies.“As teacherswehave invested ourpassion
for improving the lives of our learners, nowwe need people to help us make that differ-ence in their future beyond school.”V If you want to assist with bursary funding call 021955 3673.

School spreads sharing
Subcouncil 5 chairperson Rose Rau, centre, and Jaynap Odendal (in blue t-shirt) with thehappy children of Hope 4 Destiny when theyreceived their gifts of stationery and sportsequipment.
GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz
The school holiday was a season of sharingfor an organisation that started in Bonte-heuwel and has since spread to Delft. The chairperson of subcouncil 5, Rose
Rau, explained the season of sharing startedwhen she approached Ian Iverson, a council-lor in the Claremont area, to assist in a sum-mer school project at ProteaPrimary inBon-teheuwel.“The response that we got from him was
incredible and we received six car loads ofstationery, games and sports equipment forthe project, as well as some foodstuff,” shesaid.“This project was started by two ward
committee members, Faghmeda Kahn andHelenMandean, who then included the Abo-riginal People’s Congress and further volun-teers from the streets surrounding theschool.“Activities, which included cleaning and
painting twoclassroomsat the school aswellas providing a programme of sport and rec-reational activities for the children, startedon 17 December.“The generous donations also enabled
them to host a Christmas party on 24 Decem-ber and there are now plans to use theseclassroomsas anaftercare centre for the restof the year.”Rau was especially excited that the dona-
tions they received from Iverson were farmore than they needed, which enabled tospread the sharing by helping the DelftStreet Sports and Recreation Association inBlikkiesdorp, and Hope 4 Destiny in Eind-hoven.“Councillors Michael Toko, Courtney van
WykandCharlesEsau joinedme earlier thismonth to hand over these donations and itwas fantastic to see the faces of the childrenwhen they saw what we had for them.
“The Delft Street Sports and RecreationAssociation is run by Ettienne Claasen andJane Roberts who are based in Blikkies-dorp,” said Rau.Their work, however, covers the entire
Delft area. We were pleased to meet them atthe Smart Park in Blikkiesdorp where wehanded over soccer balls, netballs, basket-balls, and cricket sets.“Hope 4 Destiny is an organisation that
works with children and youth. Jaynap Od-endal and her family run a Grassroots ECD
from their house in Lena Street, Eindhov-en, aswell a youth club to give school drop-outs hope for the future.“We are confident that the stationery
and games will make a difference in thelives of these children.”

Valhalla Park library is on a mission tomake reading a priority for learners in theirneighbourhood. In 2013 they started the Read For My Fu-
ture @ My Library project and it continuesto empower learners in the area.Jerome Fortuin, one of the librarians, ex-
plained they were motivated to start thisproject when dealing with learners everyday.“Many of them come to us for help with
assignments and projects and we realisedthat their reading skills were not developedenough for them to understand what wasneeded from them,” he said.“Parents also requested our assistance
with the same reading challenges so weknew we had to start something to stop thisvicious cycle of illiteracy.”Fortuin pointed out that the project start-
ed in April 2013 after hosting a presentationwith principals and teachers explaining the
project in detail.“We needed to show the children that
through reading they can influence theirown future, get better school grades, makeinformed decisions and this in turnwill leadto careers and financial independence, lesscrime, less poverty.”Last year some of the top readers experi-
enced some early rewards when local wardcouncillor Michael Britz stepped in to sup-port the project and they hosted a prize-giv-ing ceremony during December.“This was a highlight for us, and most im-
portantly for the learners, who got a firsttaste of the rewards of loving to read.“Wewould like to thank the councillor for
his on-going support and call on learners tojoin us this year with the awards becomingan annual event.“There is also a call out there for any busi-
nesseswhowant topartnerwithusbydonat-ing prizes for these awards, or even on amonthly basis to keep the interest going.”V For more information call 021 934 5007/8 or [email protected].

The next South African chess grandmastercould come from the northern suburbs. To be more accurate, he, or she, could be
contemplating their moves in the ranks ofthe players at Webner Primary School inRavensmead. While the world’s newest grandmaster,
Kenny Solomon, was making his moves inNamibia to win the Africa Open Chess title, three learners from Webner Primary werepart of the WP under-9 team taking part inthe SA Junior Championship inKimberley.Jordan Jacobs, Tyrique Dirks, and Car-
nic Stuurman are the youngsters who aremaking their mark on the game. This is a remarkable achievement since
the school only became a focus school forchess last year. While WP may have come second in the
tournament, coach Grant Adams is veryproud of their achievement as part of theteam.
“Jordan was one of the top players win-ning all of his seven games,” he said.“Carnicwon six of his games andTyrique
also did well winning four of his gamesagainst opposition that have been playingfor much longer.“This is only the start for them and their
attitude tells me that they have the talentand concentration to go further.”Since the programme started at the
school the number of players have increa-sed to over 100 andmore are joining as newsof their success spreads.Latest news is that the school is establis-
hing a club in the area that will include pu-pils from other schools, as well as the gene-ral public.“Wewant to start regular tournaments in
the area and participate in various leaguesin the Cape,” continued Adams.“The game has made a big difference at
the school helping children with their con-centration.V If you’re interested in the game at Webner Primarycall 021 931 2063.

Almost 4 000 traffic violation tickets wereissued at the intersection of Old Paarl Roadand Harrod Drive in Bellville in Decemberalone. This follows the installation of newspeedand traffic light cameras at this inter-section in November last year.According to Brenden van der Merwe,
councillor for ward 3, this section of roadexperiences high traffic volumes andmoto-rists regularly exceed the speed limit, po-sing a threat to other road users.“Initial statistics reported during the
first month of operation a very high inci-dence of speeding and traffic light violati-ons. In December alone, 2 492 fines were is-sued to motorists driving in an easterly di-rection above the 60km/h speed limit, or forignoring the traffic signals . In the westerlydirection, a further 1 321 fines were issued
during December,” Van der Merwe saysThe offences dropped sharply in January
when word spread about the cameras, to astill very high 963 fines issued to date, which highlights the extent of the problemand proved the cost of installing the camerasystem was warranted.Drivers have been urged to slow down
and obey the road rules.“Speeding is amajor cause of fatalities on
our roads and the camera systemwill serveto deter reckless driving behaviour. Thisintervention will hopefully contribute to asafer environment for all residents. I appealto motorists to respect the rules of the roadand their fellow road users and to realisethat speed in fact does kill. Please drive ca-refully and within the confines of the law,”says Van Der Merwe.

Partnerships give power to schools

The positive power of a partnership of busi-ness and school principals is now availablein a publication that highlights how radicalchange is coming about in education.Partners for Possibility is an organisation
that began in 2010 as a project of the Sympho-nia organisation which brokered ground-breaking partnerships between businessleaders and schools, and is reaping astonish-ing results.Last week the organisation hosted the
Western Cape launch of the book Partnersfor Possibility in Bellville.WrittenbyMandyCollins, it tells the story
of a community building process that hasthe potential to change education. The book details its beginnings at Kanne-
meyer Primary School in Grassy ParkwhenLouise van Rhyn approached principal Rid-wan Samodien with the idea of businesspartneringwith the school to improve condi-tions for learners.Fast forward to 2015 and that partnership
has spread to 200 schools across the country. It has been an exciting time and some of
those foundingmemberswerepart of apanelwho discussed their experiences at thelaunch attended by the author along withTrevor Manuel and Professor Brian O’Con-nell in attendance. The book details ten partnership case
studies. At The Valley Primary in Durbanville,
principal Priscilla August was partneredwith Ansonette van der Merwe of fruit ex-port company Capespan. The school facesproblems that included poor parent andcommunity involvement, poor pupil disci-pline and unmotivated staff.Parents were given incentives to start tak-
ing an interest in the school and day tripswere organised for the children to showthem life beyond their farm environment. One of the partnership highlights was re-
cruiting volunteers to tutor pupils and thusimprove their literacy level.Gerard Mohamed from Multisol holds
their partnershipwithHolyTrinity inElsiesRiver very close to his heart.Unemployment in the community was
high and absent parents were common, re-sulting in children lacking support and hav-ing very poor reading skills. A lack of nutri-
tion also hampered many pupil’s ability tolearn. This case study describes how working
with principal Gary Faulman, workshopswere held to make the staff realise theirstrengths.A number of projects have been started to
enhance pupils’ education experience. Faul-man feels the partnership has had a majoreffect.Anothermajor partnership is at Sophaka-
ma Primary School in Dunoon where IrenèRaubenheimer from Rogz, a pet gear compa-ny, teamed up with school principal SabeloMakubalo. When the partnership started Makubalo
had been principal for three years and hadreceived limited leadership training, whichleft him overwhelmed by the responsibili-ties that he faced. The school did not have a permanent
structure, there was no phone or data line, there were no extra mural activities and is-sues of language, with children learning inXhosa from Grade R to 3 and then switchingto English.Discussions and planning led to them de-
veloping their arts and culture department,
with a choir that has performed well at na-tional competitions.Their has also been amove to radically im-
prove reading and literacy skills.Makubalo said he has learnt to listen and
respect other people’s ideas.“I used to be impatient and just want to
give orders. The listening skills I got fromthe programme helped me change the waythat I interact with my staff.”Raubenheimer feels he has also learnt a
lot in this process.“Wegot into this becausewe reallywanted
to help change the way our clients view ourbusiness and they have started asking howthey can also become involved.“I make a point of telling people that I do
this for my children because I want to miti-gate the risk of them in an unstable environ-ment created by the gap in education.TrevorManuel said the project was an ex-
ample of active citizenry which was at theepicentre of the NDP.“This book proves that the meat of the is-
sue is that the partnershipneeds to growbig-ger to support education.”V For more information about the book and Partnersfor Possibility go to www.symphonia.net.

Delft centre gets help inbattle against HIV/AidsGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
With HIV/AIDS still a critical con-cern in South Africa, Metropolitanhas partnered with a Delft organi-
sation to help enhance the lives of those af-fected by the disease.
The company recently handed overR50 000 cheque to the Masithembele Com-munity Enrichment Centre and CSI manag-er Elsie Govender explained how they cameabout supporting the organisation.
“Metropolitan hosted an event at Parc DuCap for World Aids Day on 1 December lastyear,” she said.
“On the day, employees were given accessto free HIV and other wellness screenings. We also encouraged staff to donate towardsthe centre in Delft with non-perishable fooditems and they were able to purchase itemsmade by the Masithembele crafters.
“The health promotion and wellness test-ing services were facilitated by DesmondTutu HIV Foundation’s Tutu Tester and theMMI Foundation.”
Another event that helped the centre inDelft was the annual Metropolitan 10kmrace in December.
“Here the Desmond Tutu HIV Founda-tion’s Tutu Tester and MMI Foundationonce again provided health promotion andtesting services during the race,” Govendercontinued.
“Runners also participated in the call fordonations and all food items received, aswell as a donation of R50 000 was presentedto Masithembele at the race award ceremo-ny.
“As a result they were able to distribute
Christmas food parcels to over 100 HIV pa-tients, while the event engaged and testedover 250 people.
“Metropolitan believes that throughgreat partnerships, such as in the case withMasithembele, Desmond Tutu HIV Founda-tion’s Tutu Tester and MMI Foundation, thewar against preventable HIV infections andunnecessary Aids deaths can be won.”
Founder of the centre in Delft, MinaHeynes, was overjoyed at the support re-ceived from Metropolitan.
She said the organisation would be tenyears old this year and been running theirsupport groups for the past eight.
“There are many success stories over theyears and we are very happy to receive thisdonation,” she said.
“We are dependent on funding but evenif there is nothing, we still carry on.
“This donation will help us get a car sowe can help transport patients unable to usepublic transport to get to clinics.”
Heynes said the centre runs programmesteaching clients to sustain themselves bymaking beaded jewellery in the arts andcraft workshop they offer.V For more information, contact the Mandela PeacePark support group on 076 728 7895, and the DelftSouth Library support group on 084 722 5642.

A group of businesspeople purchased a buil-ding in Parow Industria and launched achurch called New Direction Grace Churchon 25 January.
According to Zimkhitha Mqutheni, aspokesperson for the church, twelve con-gregations in the Belhar, Delft, Eerste Ri-ver, Uitsig, Stellenbosch, Matroosfonteinand Kraaifontein areas recently closedtheir doors to join the New Direction GraceChurch.
She says the new church will be fully fun-ded by founders Esra Overberg, Pastor Co-lin Davids, Derrik Bredekamp, TheodoreMitchel and Apostle Peter Barnes
“The aim is to uplift communities, assistthem to overcome gangsterism, povertyand joblessness. They are not a ‘touch and
go’ kind of a church but one that wants tohelp people live sustainable lives,” shesays.
“The church does not expect any moneyfrom their congregation other than livingthe life that God ordained them to. They (thefounders) fund the church themselves andthey have a concrete plan to raise fundsthrough doing concerts so they do not bur-den their congregants with the maintenan-ce of the church.”
The church was filled with new membersat the opening concert and performancesincluded singers Ernie Smith and Zoe Zanaof Idols.

What started out as a funmusical pro-ject has become a fairly successfulendeavour for the members of Nort-
hern Suburbs band Borderline. The band was originally started by guita-
rists Michael Godfrey and Wyatt Peters lastyear.Michael had approached Wyatt to teach
him to play the blues.“And then he got the idea to start a band
and just play once at Eastwoods, perhaps,”Wyatt explains. As they went on, Wyatt found a bass play-
er, André van derMerwe, and the three star-ted rehearsing their songs. They had to playa showcase for the owner of Eastwoods befo-re they would be allowed to book a gig there. As luck would have it, a cajon player, Len
Miskin, happened to be at Eastwoods thatday. Luckier still, he happened to have hiscajon in the car, so the three invited him tojamwith them. Their first gigwas scheduledfor the very next day and Len became a per-manent member. The first gig became a second and so on
and the rest, as they say, is history.
Eclectic styleEastwoods’ management suggested that a
female vocalist may be more suitable fortheir audiences and so they decided to findone. They started off with another singer, but she wasn’t around long. Eventually therole went to Dominique Peters. At that stage the band were called The
Blues Collectors, a moniker they decided tochange to avoid being pigeon-holed.They were playing around with ideas
when “Borderline” came out, a name farmo-re suited to their eclectic style.“Our eventual aim is to do a whole lot of
original numbers,” explainsLen.While theyare playing some original music now, theirset also contains covers, but as Len points, out, they put their own interpretations onwell known songs.“We’ll sometimes turn a Bob Dylan song
into a reggae song,” Len says.Wyatt, who sang for the successful D7 aca-
pella group before, usually comes up withthe framework of their original songs beforetaking it to the band to work on.“We approach originals by playing to each
other’s strengths,” he says. Ultimately, Wy-att describes Borderline’s music as “looseand colourful”.Thinking back to their first gig, Wyatt
sayshe didn’t expect them tobe together thislong. It was at a show at Plaasteater that so-meone told him their sound was “fresh”which is why he thinks they are doing sowell. “It seems like there’s something newabout it,” he says.
DisciplineThey have built up a reasonable following
of fans who keep coming to shows. “We ma-naged to get people behind us who want tosee us,” Len says.Another contributing factor to the band’s
momentum is their disciplinewhen it comestomaking sure they rehearse andwork toge-ther regularly.“One of themain reasonswhy there is this
sort of magic feel, I think, is because Wyattand I are musically well connected,” Lensays. This leads to interesting improvisati-ons on stage and means that no two perfor-mances sound the same.“Sometimes those things just happen
spontaneously on stage,” Wyatt adds. For now, the band’s main goal is playing
as many shows as possible, not just in clubs, but also at festivals and private events. Theyare also interested in getting sponsors on bo-ard and making merchandise available forpurchase at their shows.Readers will get a chance to see the band
perform some of their originals and coverswhen they play at Stones in Durbanville onFriday 6 February. They’ll also be at theRoot 44 Market on Sunday 1 March and atThe Thirsty Scarecrow (across the roadfrom the market) later that day.V Visit www.borderline-live.com or find Borderline onFacebook for more information about the band, up-coming shows and bookings.

tunities in the Western Cape, said latest fi-gures indicate the events economy genera-ted R1.6 billion in the last financial year, upfrom R1.3 billion in the year before that.Between now and April, the Western Ca-
pe will host a series of events.MinisterWinde said the StellenboschWi-
ne Festival began this weekend with theHarvest Parade.“The festival is ideal entertainment for
the whole family. With sporting events, wi-ne and food pairing and art exhibitions, it’san excellent addition to our events calen-dar,” said Winde. On Saturday the J & BMet takes place at
the Kenilworth Race Course. The Met attracts over 50 000 visitors and
generates over R60 million. “It’s a greatboost for domestic tourism and job creati-on. Our local fashion sector will benefit aswell. It has been estimated that the eventgenerates R14 million in fashion sales alo-ne,” he said.Winde said the province would welcome
thousands of international and local visi-tors over attending government, entertain-ment and sporting events over the next twomonths.“The opening of national parliament in
February is always a busy period for ourhospitality industry. In that same month, the Mining Indaba will be hosted, drawingdelegates from across the globe. In March,we have the Cape Rouleur, the Cycle Tourand the Absa Cape Epic.”The Cape Town Cycle Tours estimated
economic impact is R450 million, the AbsaCapeEpic is R218million. TheMining Inda-ba generates over R400 million. At the end of March, jazz lovers throng
to the region for the annual Cape Town JazzFestival. Over 35 000 people attend theevent, which generates over R500 million. The Western Cape Government and Wes-
gro will invest R650 000 in the Cape TownJazz Festival this year.“If we look at the past two years, the
events economy generated over R1 billionannually for this region. The events econo-my created scores of temporary and perma-nent jobs for our residents. It’s an impor-tant economic driver,” said Winde.

With Wonderbag, a revolutionary, non-electric, heat retention cooker, you cancontinue to cook food for up to 12 hoursafter it has been brought to the boil.Wonderbag was founded in South Afri-
ca six years ago by local entrepreneur andsocial activist Sarah Collins. The productwas born out of a practical desire to conti-nue cooking during a bout of Eskom loadshedding. Sarah remembered how hergrandmother would wrap her pots in pil-lows and blankets to let the food cookuntilcompletion. This birthed the idea to createa solution that would allow people withinurban and rural environments to cookwhile drasticallyminimising their energyneeds.
WIN! WIN! WIN!V Three readers can each win a Wonderbag valuedat R200 each. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to en-ter.

struktuur so geteiken word. Metaaldiefstalveroorsaak gereeld onderbrekings in wa-

eens verspotmaklikmet 9 paaltjies teenHel-derberg (117) gewen.
V In die Boland-Premierliga sal Bracken-fell die komende Saterdag tuis teen die Paarlkragte meet.

Bellstar United captainMerickVlotmanhas urged caution ahead of his side’scrucial league clash against Orient FC
at Manenberg on Saturday.“All teams in the SAB League are in the
division on merit and deserve to be respect-ed. That will be our attitude when we travelto Manenberg.“They beat us 4-3 in the Nedbank Cup ear-
ly in the season. Our league form has beenindifferent, but is also significantly betterthan Orient FC. We have to ensure they donot throw away the form book and get thebetter of us again. Our record against themis already woeful as it is.’’Vlotman stressed the importance for his
side to focus on their own game and notdwell on the opponents.“We are giving as many players as possi-
ble game time as we prepare for the chal-lenge, not only of the remaining games of thefirst round, but also the crowded secondhalf.Weare going to need every player as injuries
and suspensions will be inevitable.”The team from Belhar need to be ready to
step up their effort. Factor in travelling timethat is going to come into play, and you willsee why it is important to prepare the wholeteam for the challenge. There is one guarantee, however, the fans
can expect a thunderous encounter, and theplayers have called on the Bellstar Unitedfans to continue giving them support.Orient FC are by no means a bad side and
their forwards can hurt with their pace, Wehave done our homework and we should beready for them.’’Vlotman is also aware of the opponent’s
pacey forwards and want his side to go forthe kill and be ready for anything. The crafty midfielder also adds that the
Manenberg team are a technically disci-plined side and should not be taken lightly.Sticking to our game plan will be very im-portant for us because we face a very techni-cally disciplined side who are good at coun-ter attacking football and set pieces. There’sreally no room for error’’.
Bellstar back up theirgame for Orient clash
