After 26 years in the police service Cap-tain Joe Wilson of Delft police has re-tired.

He started his career in 1990 and was firststationed at Bellville police. He later movedon to Bellville South police and finally Delft.In Delft he developed a strong bond with

the community and his colleagues, and hasbecome known in the community as a leaderin his field.“I have seen this community grow – not

only with regard to the population, but alsodevelopment – and I am happy to haveserved in a community where people take astand and speak up about their concerns,”Wilson says.He has previously worked in the private

sector for 18 years before he joined the policeforce.“I wanted to serve the community to try

and make a difference in terms of dealingwith crime,” he says.Coming from the private sector where

“the customer always came first”, Wilsonsays there is not much difference between

the police and the private sector in terms ofproviding a service and doing so to the bestof their ability. “If you want to be successfulas a police officer – or in any job – you needto build a good partnershipwith your clientsor the residents if you want to really makea difference,” he says.His advice to young constables is to render

the service they have been trained to and todowhat is expected of them. “When you lovewhat you do and you do what you love, youend up developing strong bonds on life’sjourney,” he says.What he will miss most is the interaction

with the community, with various commu-nity organisations and leaders with whomhe has worked side by side throughout hiscareer.“I loved working in this community and

seeing it grow and hope that those involvedin the various community structures willcontinue with their good work,” he says.Acting cluster commander of the Blue

Downs Cluster, Brigadier Hendrik Jansen,says Wilson is one of those officers that thecommunity of Delft, Belhar and BellvilleSouth will miss.

Delft police take drug battle to the streetsDelft Police busted three suspects duringa crime operation focused on drug outlets.

The operations were conducted onTuesday 26 April by the crime preventionteam led by Captain Dickey Adonis.

Captain Joe Wilson, spokesperson ofDelft police, says in the first housesearched in Delft South, police recovered157 parcels of dagga with a street value ofR12 500.

They also arrested a 39-year-old woman

who will face charges of dealing in dagga.In another search in Tubelitsha police

arrested a 29-year-old woman and recov-ered 86 parcels of dagga with a street valueof R7000. The suspect will face charges ofdealing in drugs.

“In the last successful action police per-formed a house search in Voorbrug Delftand recovered 200 sachets of tik hidden ina sugar bowl on the premises,” Wilsonsays.

The estimated street value of the drugsrecovered is about R8000.

“They also arrested a 31-year-old femalefor dealing in drugs,” he says.

The estimated value of the drugs confis-cated amounts to about R27 500.

Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, station com-mander of the Delft police, praised his per-sonnel and said that his office was takingthe fight against drug dealing and posses-sion to the streets.

“Looking back on his contributions he wasalways available to the community and ren-dered an excellent service. Whenever thecommunity called on him to assist – evenwith missing persons – he was there. He re-ally made a difference in this communityjust in the way he interacted with resi-dents,” Jansen says.

He doubts there will be anyone who willfill Wilson’ shoes, but hopes the legacy heis leaving behind in terms of his commit-ment and loyalty will be taken up by youngconstables.

“Wilson was truly living for the commu-nity he served and definitely walked thetalk,” Jansen says.

At a recent sitting of the Joint OperationsCommittee (JOC) of Bellville regarding thestreet people issue, a plan of action was de-vised.

This includes a workshop to be held forchurch leaders on Thursday 19 May wherethe norms and standards of dealing withstreet people and responsible giving will bediscussed, says Wilma Piek, who is incharge of the social development arm of theVRCID, the Bellville and Parow city im-provement district, and a member of theJOC.

She says at the recent meeting, held onThursday 14 April, the JOC divided intotheir different task teams and discussed the

plan of action based on an analysis that wasdone at their previous meeting.

According to Piek, the importance of thebuy-in of the churches is crucial to theirplan of setting norms and standards to dealwith street people.

Piek and Ilse Els, manager of the MetroEvangelical Services, were appointed asthe responsible people to reach the church-es.

Their plan also includes developing a da-tabase of all services and resources availa-ble to street people, street children andhardened street youth on preventative, in-tervention and aftercare services.

Piek again confirmed the Safe Space alter-

native accommodation solution that wouldbe up and running by July.

A monthly action meeting on vagrancyhotspots between safety and security andsocial outreach role players was also dis-cussed, regarding how to coordinate actionthat needs to be taken.

Patricia Noyoo was also introduced as thenew Street People Manager.

“She will address our meeting as soon asshe is at a stage where she can discuss theway forward within her department.”

An international investigation into achild pornography distributor sentshock waves through Melkbosstrand

last week when a 34-year-old man was ar-rested in the seaside suburb.

The high-level investigation included offi-cers from the United States of America’s de-partment of homeland security.

In an interview with TygerBurger, Melk-bosstrand police revealed the man lives inAtlantis but works in Melkbosstrand andhis arrest follows that of a security officerin Parow in November last year.

The investigation was headed by Ser-geant Delene Grobler from the provincialhead office of the Family Violence, ChildProtection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unitin Gauteng.

Police spokesperson Constable Debbie Al-ard says Grobler and her team executed thearrest on Tuesday 26 April at 14:30 at theman’s place of work in Melkbosstrand.

Alard says the man is on a list of top 25wanted child pornography suspects and hisarrests followed that of his accomplice fromParow late last year.

“Both of them were on this list and thesetwo men were sharing the pornography.They were sharing the unsuitable images ofchildren between each other. The childrendiffer in ages,” says Alard.

“There are still numerous arrests out-standing linked to this operation called Op-eration Simon.”

The man was charged for being in posses-sion and distribution of child pornographyand appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’sCourt on Thursday 28 April.TygerBurger broke the story on its Face-

book page shortly before his court appear-ance last week and the post sent tongueswagging.

In the Melkbosstranders Facebook groupmany residents congratulated police ontheir arrest. “This is great. Now into jailwith this pond scum and let the prisonerssort them out. Sick bastards,” one residentwrote. On TygerBurger’s Facebook page, areader wrote: “Such sick people must benamed and shamed! Thanks everybody in-volved in making the arrests. Dear Godplease protect our little ones; they can’t pro-tect themselves”.

The man, however, cannot be legallynamed until he appears in court.

The successful arrest was however shortlived when police revealed the man hadbeen released on R3000 bail and was set toappear in court on Friday 10 June.

According to the National Register forSex Offenders, any person who is foundguilty of exposing children to pornographyor creates child pornography is listed in theregister. According to the register and theCriminal Procedure Act, when seeking a joban employee is required to tell the employerof the court ruling against them.

In less than two weeks five schools in theElsies River police precinct have beentargeted by criminals.Sergeant Esmerelda Pheiffer, spokesper-

son of Elsies River police, says the schoolswere broken into and the properties vandal-ised.

“Most of these schoolswere targetedmorethan once – in the same week – and comput-ers, computer boxes, copper pipes, toilet ba-sins, taps and lights were some of the itemsthat were stolen, and electrical wires werecut off,” Pheiffer says.

She adds that the roofs were also dam-aged.

However, during the last reported inci-dent last weekend at a high school in ElsiesRiver, policemanaged to catch two suspectsin the act.Pheiffer says the one suspect, a minor,

and an accomplice were found hiding in theroof of the school.

“Another suspect was also caught with acomputer that was identified by anotherschoolwhich reported a break-in,” she says.

Pheiffer says the total estimated cost ofthe stolen property and the damages caused

to the schools come to thousands of randsfor the repair and replacement thereof.“The schools also lost out ona lot of educa-

tional information used for teaching,” shesays.

The police urged the community to be onthe look-out for these perpetratorswho com-mit such vigorous acts and to report it to thepolice.

“The schools must be protected as it’s a

place for our children to be educated whichneeds to take place in a safe and secure envi-ronment. As a community we cannot allowthese criminals to disrupt the environmentwhere are children are being educated,”Pheiffer adds.V The police are calling on the public for any informa­tion which can lead to the recovery of the stolenproperty and further arrests. Unit for cancer treatment in 2014, her heartwas touched by the poor condition of thisunit.“Little didwe know that evenwith amedi-

cal aid, the only place of treatment for himwas in the Tygerberg Paediatric OncologyUnit. Nothing in our wildest dreams couldhave prepared us,” says Luani Oosthuizen,also director and founder of I am SpecialMinistries.“Although the best academic doctors and

their knowledge of children with cancerwere available, everything else was like ahorror movie! There are parents, like my-self, who spend weeks next to their sickchild’s bedside. Theymost often sleep on thefloor or next to the bed in a very uncomforta-ble chair. The bathrooms are old and unhy-gienic and even making a cup of coffee ortaking a bath is a challenge.“The ward was filthy, the bathrooms and

other facilities were old and most of the fur-niture long past their lifespan, to say theleast,” she says.

No funds from governmentThis inspired her to form the joint venture

“Touching the Heart” with another localnon-profit organisation, the Daniel andFriends Fund, to raise money towards thesubstantial upgrading of the unit.“Itwasmade very clear that no funds from

the ‘Tygerberg Paediatric Trust’ or othergovernment funding will be made availablefor an upgrade of the children’s oncologyward.“A minimum of R1 million is needed to

create a child-friendly, healthy environ-ment. It needs to be hygienic, functional and

sustainable for patients, parents and themed-ical staff,” she says.The project will be launched at a black-tie

gala event on Thursday 16 June from 18:30 for19:00 at the Val de Vie Wine Estate.Over the past few years both I Am Special

Ministries (an NPO dedicated to equippingchildren in predominantly underprivilegedcommunities with foundation skills in self-confidenceandempowerment) and theDanieland Friends Fund (an NPO which provides awide spectrum of support to families whohave children with special needs) have beenintimatelyandoftenpersonally involvedwithchildren battling chronic illness and/or dis-ease.Oosthuizen became involved with the Dan-

iel and Friends Fund through another project

in which Dr Pieter Fourie, one of the trus-tee members of the fund, and herself arecompiling a coffee table book to capturesome of the experiences of parents throughthe lens of a camera to provide to the readera mere fragment of insight into what thesechildren endure during their treatment, aswell as the extensive demands on those re-sponsible for their care.

“To date, there has been no similarproject which hopes to create such a graph-ic appreciation for those whose lives havenot yet personally been touched by theemotional and physical exhaustion whichcomes from having a child who regularlyneeds medical intervention,” Oosthuizensays.

Once upon a time in the northernsuburbs there was a newspaperwith one million photographers

and even more sources.Whether it was jealousy or ignorance,

outsiders could not accept this idea andnever missed the opportunity to convinceall and sundry that they too were outsid-ers.

“TygerBurger cannot have one millionphotographers,” they would bickeramong the residents.

“Your story doesn’t matter! Your photoisn’t good enough!”

The outsiders’ lies spread like wild fireand a dark cloud settled over the once op-timistic northern suburbs. Poisonedstatements such as “there’s nothing in itfor you” and “keep your story for your-self” seeped into the brooding minds ofthe masses.

So many radiant stories have beenwhispered selfishly among a select fewwhile so many people out there were leftin the dark.

Yesterday these stories were shared; to-day they’re buried. The good news driedup, but so did information and forewarn-ings.

Some residents knew of another’swrongdoing, but the outsider’s poisonprevented them from giving the newspa-per a lead. Other residents also becamevictims of the wrongdoer, but those whowere in the know were blinded by the out-sider mentality.

“Tell your loved ones, not your neigh-bour,” the outsiders cried, before addingparadoxically: “But always listen to yourneighbour. They might have good infor-

mation.”And so the newspaper was read by a

great many residents, but it became un-sustainable. Too many took and notenough gave back. The most inspiring ofstories and the greatest photos never sawthe light of day, so the community grewpoorer and the outsiders celebrated.

Then one day a hero came along – you!You realised that you had a beautiful

story worth sharing in your communitynewspaper.

It was the catalyst of a new dawn.You sent the story idea to the newspaper

and it was placed one sunny Wednesday.A resident who was once an outsider

read it and thought they too have a story

to tell. “Why not,” the resident thought.Another took a photo of the beautiful

sunrise and also seized the opportunity tocontact the newspaper.

The following week even more outsid-ers were converted and as quickly as arainbow appears in the drizzle,TygerBur-ger once again became a communitynewspaper – a true reflection of the com-munity it serves!

The outsiders’ opinions were flutteredaway by the Cape Doctor and were re-placed with a feeling of companionship.

And they shared happily ever after.The beginning.

In an effort to empower childrenin Bellville through an extramural activity,Karate-ZenBish-

op Lavis have expanded their ser-vices to Boston Private School.Sensei Eddie du Plessis has been

training and teaching for over 40years since the establishment ofthe do-ju in Bishop Lavis in 1982.“This sport is something thathas

taught me patience and disciplineand I want to instil this in theyouth I teach,” he says.Du Plessis says as Boston Pri-

vate School does not offer a wide

range of extra mural activities, hewas approached by his daughter-in-law to offer his services to theschool.“I have grandchildren who at-

tend the school and I thought itwould be a great opportunity to getinvolved in the school and to makea positive impact – not only ontheir lives, but on their classmatestoo,” he says.Du Plessis says through his

classes he wishes to not only em-power children and teach themhow to protect themselves andtheir families if they do find them-selves in a tough situation, but alsoto teach them how to better react

in different situations presented tothem.“We live in a tough world and

some children grow up in commu-nities where they are faced withdrugs, gangsterism and otherforms of crime and abuse. Throughthe classes I want to teach themhow to better react to certain situa-tions and how to better controltheir frustrations and emotions,”he says.Du Plessis has about 24 children

from the school signed up andhopes more will join.“I have more and more parents

making contact with me wantingto know if their children can join

the classes. It is exciting to see howthese children develop through theclasses,” he says.He currently teaches twice a

week at Boston Private Schoolfrom 14:45 on Tuesdays and Fri-days at 13:15. Each class runs forabout an hour.Du Plessis also teaches classes at

the Bishop Lavis branch from 17:30on Tuesdays and 17:010 on Thurs-days.“The classes are also open to par-

About 600 teenagers recently participat-ed in the finals of the fourth annualCape Town Games hosted by the City

of Cape Town’s sport, recreation and ameni-ties department.The games took place at the Swartklip In-

door Centre in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday23 April.The teenagers, aged between 13 and 18,

represented the four City districts.This year’s gameswaswon, for the second

year in a row, by District 4, which includesthe northern areas of Bonteheuwel, Sarepta,Scottsdene and Belhar.District 4 alsowon theTeamSpirit Award.City’s Mayco member for community ser-

vices and special projects, councillor Belin-da Walker, says the games are very popularand each year the competition is fierce.“The event gives youngpeople an opportu-

nity to compete against one other in a num-ber of sport and recreational events in a safeenvironment,” she says.Before the main event, the games see the

four City districts compete against each oth-er at three levels.The first is the facility level, where more

than 20 000 participants take part in thegames.About 5 000 of these participants then ad-

vance to the area level where just over 3 000participants are selected to participate atdistrict level.The final participants who advance from

the district level games then participate inthe department’s overall Cape TownGames,which usually includes approximately 640participants.The participants compete against each

other in various sporting codes and activi-ties such as table tennis, pool, dominoes,chess, Marabaraba, board games, five-a-sidesoccer, netball, Dibeke and Drie Stokkies,among others.Walker says through this event, the City

aims to encourage mass participation inboth physical and mental challenges, whileshowcasing some of the activities offered bythe various community centres and recrea-tion hubs.“The event also seeks to connect the un-

connected and affords participants the op-portunity to compete in activities they maynot otherwise have had access to,” she says.

Adding that events and programmes suchas these promote a healthy lifestyle and usesport as a development tool.“Importantly, they also encourage social

cohesion between residents from variouscommunities across Cape Town. All of theparticipants are strongly commended formaking it to the final round.”“Iwant to offermyspecial congratulations

to the winners who continue to excel eachyear,” Walker says.

gr.10-leerder toe dinge in haar lewebegin verander het. Niemand hetverstaan wat aangaan nie, sy selfook nie.Vandag, ná ’n wipplank-tienerle-

we, is sy ’n sprankelende jong vol-wassene – iemandvol lewewat elkeuitdaging met deursettingsvermoëaanpak.“Ek kom uit ’n baie arm agter-

grond. My ma het my alleen groot-gemaak,” sê sy.Sy beskryf haarself as ’n oop per-

soon, ’n liefdevolle mens en ie-mand uniek.Ná haar matriekjaar het sy op

haar ontwerper-loopbaan begin fo-kus. Sy het ook voortdurend gedig-te geskryf – sielsdiepe gedigte oorwat sy in die lewe deurgemaak het,vertel sy.

Studeer danksy beursChanchea studeer nou om ’n ba-

vir haar moeilik. Chanchea het alprobeer omselfmoord te pleeg deur’n oordosis pille te drink en deurhaarself met ’n mes te sny.“Ek was ’n normale persoon,

maar in graad 10 het ek stemme be-gin hoor.“My emosionele toestand het

verander. Ek het begin skreeu enhuil enmyma-hulle het nie geweetwat om te maak nie,” vertel sy.Sy het ’n sielkundige gaan sien.

“In 2011 het ek ’n breakdown ge-had. Ek was baie suicidal en wounet sterf.“Ek het elke dag daaraan ge-

dink,” sê sy.Dis toe dat sy haarself begin sny

en pille begin drink het.“Ek kon nie my matriekjaar vol-

tooi nie.“Ekmoes hospitaal toe ... dit was

’n uphill battle.”Chanchea kon vir ’n ruk nie

praat nie. Sy kon in ’n stadium ooknie eens uit die bed klim nie, ont-hou sy.“ByTygerberg-hospitaal het hul-

le vasgestel wat fout is en medika-sie voorgeskryf,” sê sy.

te aanvaar en te ondersteun. Praatoor bipolêre gemoedsversteuring;dis nie ’n curse nie en dit gaan nieweg nie. “God het jou nie eenkantgegooi nie ... jymoet net leer omditte hanteer,” sê Chanchea oor diesiekte, wat sy as die stille moorde-naar beskryf.Sy wil ook ’n organisasie, Bipo-

lar and Seek, aan die gang kry ommense te ondersteun,hulle leerhoeom die siekte te hanteer en ook omdialoog daaroor aan die gang te sit.“As jy nie daaroor gaan praat

nie, gaan jy net terugval in daaidonker gat en kom jy nie daaruitnie. Ek weet, want ek was selfdaar,” sê die toegewyde entrepre-neur met ’n glimlag.

Not only is Wayde van Niekerk an interna-tional athletics star, but also a stellar exam-ple to all of the youth in Kraaifontein.

This was acknowledged by Cape Townmayor Patricia de Lille, recently, when acertificate of recognition was bestowed onWayde’s proud grandparents Sophia andWathen van Niekerk, who still reside inKraaifontein, Wayde’s hometown.

“As a subcouncil and City we want to ac-knowledge our residents for their achieve-ments, nationally and internationally,”said Grant Twigg, when he handed over thecertificate on behalf of De Lille and the sub-council.

“As it has been proven so many times be-fore, it is irrespective of were you were bornor where you grew up. You can achievewhatever you dream to achieve and wewant to celebrate Wayde’s accomplish-ments with him,” said Twigg.

“It is a privilege for us to be able to meetyou today and say thank you to your grand-son for the positive message he has givento the youth in Kraaifontein.”

Wathen thanked the mayor, subcounciland the entire community for supportingWayde.

The athlete made sprinting history whenhe became the first man in history to runfaster than 10 seconds for 100 metres, 20 sec-onds for 200 metres and 44 seconds for 400metres.

The Iris House Children’s Hospice hasjust received its first legacy donationfrom a kind-hearted soul who passedaway from cancer on 13 August last year.

The late Yvonne Davids died aged 66and was the great aunt of Adam Davids,an Iris House child.

Davids was fromPniel, Stellen-bosch, and an ac-tive member of theCongregationalChurch there, al-ways participatingin events and spe-cial unions, saysSue van der Linde,the hospice’sfounder and mar-keting director.

“Yvonne wasvery passionateabout children.She was the seniorheadmaster of theboys and girls bri-gade, and ballroominstructor fromher younger days,” Sue said.

“Being a selfless person, after herniece Michelle Perrins – whom she loveddearly – passed away in May 2006 of can-cer at the age of 10 years, she immediate-ly after that in July established theDwars River Valley ‘Hoping is Coping’cancer support group.

Yvonne was also a Cansa volunteerand member of the Relay Committee, Sue

says.“As with her attachment to Michelle,

she was very attached to Adam and al-ways wanted the best for him. She want-ed him, and children like him, to alwayshave the best of care by people who arepassionate about what they do where the

children are con-cerned,” Sue says.

Yvonne was nevermarried and had nochildren of her own,neither did she havemany possessions,as her focus was onher drive to help oth-ers, Sue says.

“Of the little thatshe had – a little 1992model Toyota Corol-la and a few furnish-ings and kitchenutensils – she couldonly think to leave itafter her passing tocontinue to supportthat which she wastruly passionate

about.“So, she left the proceeds of her ‘bigger’

assets to Iris House and others whom shecared dearly about,” Sue adds.

This all amounted to R16 000 whichwill be used to help the hospice continuetheir free service and community-basedcare for their special children.

“You have a special place in ourhearts.”

Teen judoka eyes the top spotSTEHAN SCHOEMAN

Don’t be fooled by the fact that ReganWilson (18) is partially sighted – he isone of the very best judoka in the coun-

try. Full stop.Regan is the deserving winner of the Tyg-

erBurger Sport Star of the Month award.Residing in Delft, the Athlone School for

the Blind learner in Bellville South is rakingin the medals on the national judo scene.

“I started judo at the age of 11 at the schooland loved it from the word go. The adrenalinrush you get on competition days makes itvery exciting and I just love the sport,” saysRegan.

He started under the watchful eye of Lor-raine Job who is a retired 7th Dan in thesport. Now, he trains under Mike Job, whois very respected in the sport.

Just last week at the Commonwealth JudoChampionship in Port Elizabeth Regan com-peted in the partially sighted and abled bodydivisions and won gold in both in the u.55kgdivision (17 to 19 years).

“The last year or so has been good. I thinkwinning both divisions last week is probablythe highlight of my career thus far. I also

graded to my first dan black beltat the national dan grading ex-amination in December lastyear which is pretty cool aswell,” says Regan.

Judo is not the only sport inwhich this talented youngsterexcels.

In March during the annualNedbank National Champion-ship for Physical Disabled andVisually Impaired in Bloemfon-tein, Regan won gold in the 100mand 200m sprint events. Thetimes Regan ran in the sprintswas good enough to put hisname on the shortlist for the Re-gion 5 games in Angola later thisyear. During the championshipshe also won two gold medals inthe u.55 and u.60kg division inthe judo – a remarkable feat initself.

The next point of order is thenational judo championship (June) in Gaut-eng.

“I have won gold at the National JudoChampionship. I am confident in winning a

medal again, but it is not a case of just pitch-ing and expecting to win. You have to keepgrinding and work hard and treat your fel-low competitors with respect.

“In my preparation for tourna-ments I must mention my threetraining partners who help me alot. Luvuyo Mrulekana andAyanda Wolayi played a big rolein my success. We have beentraining together for nine years,and we just work well as a team.

“I also want to thankTygerBur-ger and Bosman, McNulty andDu Toit Optometrists for choos-ing me as their winner. I amhumbled and truly grateful forbeing the chosen one, it is a mas-sive honour for me,” says Regan.

Rugby-stilte naweek verbreek

Cape Town’s favourite local mixed martialarts promotion, Cape Fight League (CFL),returns to Theo Marais Sports Park on Sat-urday 21 May.

Following the huge success of the first ProCFL event held at Sunningdale Sports Com-plex on Saturday 26 March, another action-packed tournament in Cape Town is antici-pated. Doors are expected to open at 17:00and tickets are available at Computicket.

CFL 15 will feature 15 Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) bouts, with five of them being titlefights. “Our last show was a huge successwith awesome fight action. This event willsee five pro am title fights and one profes-

sional bout in the heavyweight division,”said matchmaker Anthony Kettle.

As a popular amateur fight circuit, CFL isa feeder to professional MMA promotion Ex-treme Fighting Championship (EFC) World-wide and has produced dozens of profession-al athletes. CFL 15 will be live-streamed onits Youtube channel allowing spectatorsworldwide to not miss out on the event.

Formed in 2011, Cape Fight League show-cases the talents of fighters across the coun-try. CFL gives amateur MMA and K1 fight-ers a chance to compete with fighters fromacross the country and abroad, right here inthe Mother City.

Koopman takesoverall title

Having cemented its position as one of thecontinent’s most prestigious races, the orga-nisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathonwill aim to take another step forward thisyear in their attempt to close the gap on theworld’s biggest road running events.

Set to be held for the third time since itsrelaunch in 2014, the annual 42km race takesplace in the Mother City on 18 September2016, and proudly retains IAAF Silver Labelstatus.

As the only standard marathon race in Af-rica to be awarded Silver Label status, afterreceiving worthy recognition from the glob-al governing body for athletics following the2014 and 2015 events, the Sanlam Cape TownMarathon will continue to target Gold Labelrecognition.

Says race ambassador and former Olym-pic medallist Elana Meyer: “We are verypleased with the progress we have madeover the last two years, and we are satisfiedthat we made further advances by hosting

another successful event last year. We havea vision and will continue to focus on thatby making the required adjustments to en-sure we are delivering a world-class eventacross the board. This will assist in ensuringSouth African runners have access to aworld-class running event organised by glo-bally accredited standards, while offeringincentives and mentoring for local run-ners.”

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon bringstogether elite competitors, social runnersand local communities, and is proving to bea top choice for elite athletes as well as fit-ness-loving celebrities.

Organisers are again calling on runnersof all abilities to #challengeyourself and#challengeyourfriend by participating inthe annual endurance event on a flat and fastcourse which is ideal for experienced and be-ginner athletes.

Legacy athletes including Elana Meyerhave pledged their support for the event.

Sanlam race aiming for gold

The Keith Grainger Memorial UCT OpenSquash Championship concluded onFriday 29 April after kicking off a week

earlier.The tournament is named after Keith be-

cause of his input to squash at UCT between1999 and 2001, despite his cancer and havinghis leg amputated.

He died in September 2001 during his thirdyear at UCT. He went to UCT as an amputee,but still loved squash, and made his main fo-cus at UCT being part of the squash club andcontributing as best he could.

He would go on court (with an artificialleg) and hit balls to beginners and help themwith their technique. He was also centrallyinvolved with organising the first UCTSquash Tour to the USA in December 2000,and went on the tour as manager – also play-ing a couple of matches en route.

The tournament was a reminder of thespirit of Keith and his amazing squash crazyfamily. Keith’s sister, Natalie, a formerworld no.1 squash player, supports the tour-nament from the USA and is instrumentalin raising funds and profile for the event.Jean and Chris, Keith’s parents, donate tro-phies and continue to show case the eventfrom Johannesburg. Jean, a former BritishOpen and Current World Masters Championin her age group, is very active on and offthe court and continues to promote the gameall over the world.

A record number of participants enteredthe 11th running of the event with 132 menand 49 women players representing 19 na-tions.

Twenty international players from Ger-many, Nigeria, Egypt, England, Austria,France, South Korea, Canada, Argentina,Kuwait and Iraq competed against 30 SouthAfricans in the main PSA draws.

The tournament caters for all ages, fromthe professional players in the main drawsright down to the boys u.11 section. Thisyear the tournament has partnered with WPMasters and sees the event including the WPMasters Open in it, resulting in 53 Mastersplayers playing in the event with the oldest

player being a 75-year-old.In the Women’s PSA main draw final,

Egyptian u.17 no.1 player, Rowan Elarabytook 43 minutes to beat South African no.5Milnay Louw 3-1 to win her second PSA tour-nament in two weeks. It was the first gameshe had lost in eight matches on South Afri-can soil.

Louw was also tested for the first time thisweek and both players showed great athleti-cism and speed moving each other aroundthe court. Louw never gave up and kept theintensity resulting in the third game win forher, but Elaraby showed her class and amaz-ing temperament for a 15-year-old playerclinching the fourth game 11-9.

The men’s main draw saw no.2 and Austri-an no.1 seed Aqeel Rehman beat unseededEgyptian Hesham Mohamed Aly 3-1 in anhour. After winning the first game 11-4, Reh-man found himself 3-8 down in the secondgame after Mohamed Aly raised to an earlylead, never giving up he fought his way to9-9 and then went point for point eventuallyclinching the second 15-13. Mohamed Alyagain started the third game quickly easinginto a lead and this time he hung on securingthe game win. Rehman bounced back andshowed some amazing skills of fetching anda steady temperament closing off the match3-1 to win his eighth PSA final.Other winners on the evening in the
