Pedestrians in Belhar can now enjoywalking on their new sidewalks in-stead of walking through the rough

bushes on their way to school, home orwork.

This follows requests from residents forformal sidewalks to be constructed was re-cently completed at a cost of R417 000through the City of Cape Town’s transportdepartment.

Ward councillor Willie Jaftha says thecommunity sent in letters and petitions forspeedbumps as well, which were also in-stalled at a cost of R200 000.

“The speedhumps were paid for withward allocations and the City’s transportdepartment assisted with the three side-walks,” he says.

Jaftha says six speedbumps were con-structed in Arundel Way and four in Her-schell Way and more speedbumps will beconstructed in Haarlem Street, AlbertaStreet and Winter Place Street.

He adds that officials are investigatingthe possibility of constructing more speed-bumps in the community. The sidewalkswere constructed along Platteklip Street,Bird Street and the walkway between EricaDrive and Riebeeck Street.

“The walkway between Erica Drive andRiebeeck Street are mainly used by the pri-mary school children who attend RiebeeckPrimary School and had to walk through

man-made paths in the past which are sur-rounded by bushes,” Jaftha says.

He sayswith the new sidewalks andwalk-ways pedestrians feel safer and can nowwalk ona smooth surface instead ofwalkingon the streets or on the uneven paths.

“By investing in the community we aremaking positive changes to the environ-

ment and in the lives of childrenandall resi-dents,” Jaftha says.He further requests the community to

contact him if they have any ideas or re-quests for projects that they would like thecouncil to consider.V If you have any suggestions or proposals emailJaftha at [email protected].

The corps aim to not only teach the chil-dren themarching steps, but they also learnlife skills.

@febastrid

While three elderlywomen fromBell-ville South were conned out oftheir pension grants, one woman

escaped the trauma and financial loss theothers experienced.According David Maritz, a community

worker, the elderly women claimed thateach one of them received a call from awomanwhocallsherself “Sandra”and saysshe works for South Africa Social SecurityAgency (Sassa). All fourwomenreceiveda call from“San-

dra” in April.“She sounds professional and obviously

convincing or these elderly women wouldnot have fallen for her tricks,” Maritz says.He explains that the woman “Sandra”

calls and has all the personal details of theSassa beneficiaries. She proceeds to readout the home address, identity number,Sassa card number and then asks the bene-ficiary to confirm the details.“She then says to the person that there

is only one thing outstanding which needsto be added to the system, and that is theirPIN code,” Maritz explains. She managed to get all four of the elderly

women’s pin numbers during the phonecalls, and when it came to the day theirmonies were paid out, they found they hadnothing in their accounts.“This is heartbreaking forme. It is a form

of abuse and abuse of the system whichthesewomen trusted. They do not have anyother form of income and, just like that, thelittle bit that they do receive was takenfrom them,” he says.Maritz says that something drastically

needs to change as this is not a local issue, but a national one. He believes the benefici-aries arepickedat randomand theyarema-nipulated by the person who calls them.“One elderly woman told me that ‘San-

dra’ told her she needed the PIN numberfor safekeeping as she knew many elderlypeople often lose their PIN numbers and ifthey need it they could contact her,” hesays.Sihle Ngobese, spokesperson for Albert

Fritz, provincialminister of social develop-ment, says although the department has nocontrol over the operations of Sassa, whichis anational entity theyhavebeenassistingthembybringingcomplaints of grant abuseand fraud to their attention.“The department will assist these ladies

in this regard, and Sassa will be requestedto look into the matter with urgency,” Ngo-bese says.Captain Martin Holmes, acting station

commander of Bellville South police, saysno one has come forward to report a caseof fraud, but he encourages those who havefallen victim to come forward.“We are aware of similar incidents re-

ceived reports last year, but no one hascome forward to open a case recently. It isimportant for people to report it so that thematter can be investigated,” he says.

The City of Cape Town’s Social Devel-opment and Early Childhood Devel-opment Directorate has recruited

and trained nearly 400 people in this fi-nancial year to participate in its home-based care programme.

According to a statement, the director-ate started the initiative in 2014 as partof the Vulnerable Groups Programme, tolend a hand to elderly residents in needof assistance around the home, but alsocompanionship.

The home-based caregivers pro-gramme employs workers through theCity’s Expanded Public Works Pro-gramme (EPWP) who render social careservices through psychosocial support, companionship, housekeeping and lighthousehold duties as well as referrals toother social services.

The caregivers offer their services toseniors in their home environment andat old-age homes, clinics and hospitals.

In the first year, 2580 elderly residentssigned up for the programme. Last yearthat number more than doubled to 5557.

This year saw a high level of interestagain, prompting the directorate to re-vise its target of 300 caregivers to 400.

All of the caregivers have completedtheir training and have started provid-ing services to clients.

Mayco member for social developmentand early childhood development, Su-zette Little, says this speaks to the vul-nerability of elderly residents – many ofwhom are no longer able to do things forthemselves, like cleaning the house oreven their personal grooming.

“I’m enthused that so many have takenadvantage of this opportunity. Not only

does it mean that little things are beingdone around the house for them, but italso means a break from the lonelinessthat many experience – especially thoseliving on their own.”

The home-based caregivers aresourced from the City’s job seeker data-base and, after their recruitment, thecaregivers undergo training sessions.

They are also trained on how to identi-fy older people in need through commu-nity profiling and to provide basic relieffor family members of older people.

Accredited first-aid training, commu-nication and companionship aspects arealso addressed with the trainees.

The home-based caregivers have beentrained and appointed to offer the follow-ing services: Respite relief for familymembers and caregivers of seniors, com-panionship, reading, assistance in prep-aration of meals, assistance with lightcleaning and laundry duties, and refer-ral of seniors requiring hands-on care ormedical care to the districts for support.

“The caregivers deserve a specialthank you for this service. Home-basedcare is not an easy task, especially assome seniors see outsiders as a threat totheir independence. In many cases thecaregivers are also the ones who identifycases of abuse and assist with interven-tions to help stop this cycle,” Little says.

Residents who need assistance of ahome-based caregiver can contact the so-cial development department’s offices:V The Tygerberg office – call Elmerie Voorslagon 021 918 7224; the northern office – call Sher-ee Visagie on 021 444 2719; the eastern office –call Linda Petersen on 021 900 1683, and thewestern office – call 021 529 4802.

’n Onontbeerliketaak hier verrigANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

OntmoetRiaan*, ’n student by ’nvooraan-staande kollege.Riaan se lewe was op ’n verwoestingspad

In dié beproewende tyd het hy dwelms be-

Die depressiewe jong man was vir twee

Viljoen Retief sal gedurendedie oggend so twee of drie liedjies sing endaar sal ook items uitgeloot word.* Riaan is ’n skuilnaam.

Hoewel vertragings korter gaan raak, moet Kaapse treinpendelaars hullemaar vir nog minstens ses maande

regmaak vir oponthoude en frustrasie.Volgens Riana Scott, Metrorail-woord-

ger proses is.

Adog may be a “man’s best friend” butdo you knowhow to reduce your chan-ces of being bitten by one?

According to Samantha Walpole, the sec-retary of Animal Behavioural Consultantsof SouthAfrica, children are themost at riskof being bitten by dogs and should be educat-ed about how to act around and take care oftheir dogs.“Children are generally drawn to dogs.

Wagging tails are attractive to children. Un-fortunately, the public is ill-informed that ifa dog’s tail iswagging, itmeans that it is hap-py and safe to approach. This is far from thetruth. Children are also taught that huggingand kissing is an acceptable form of affec-tion. To humans that might be, but to ca-nines this is perceived as confrontational.

“Fundamentally, humans and dogs speaka different language. When communicationis misunderstood, people get bitten,” saysWalpole, a dog behaviourist and trainer.Dogs could also turn on their owners as

a result of a number of reasons.Walpole says dogs that bite their owners,

or anyone else, could have an underlyingmedical condition. The dog could also bepushed to a point where it has no choice orcould feel that its life is being threatened.Harsh and confrontational training meth-ods could also be a contributing factor withregards to human related dog aggression. She provides the following tips and urges

parents to educate their children:“Be respectful to your dog. Research and

learnhow to ‘speakdog’. There are anumber

of body signals that adogdisplays to indicatethat it is uncomfortable and needs space orthat it likeswhat you are doing. Bywatchingyour dog’s body language and understand-ing what your dog is saying, you are able tostop or change the reason for your dog feel-ing uncomfortable.“Learn what your dog likes and dislikes

and respect these needs. A dog should not betreated like a toy or tested to see how toler-ant it is. Do not poke, push or sit on a dogor pull its tail. Stop what you are doing ifa dog shows discomfort. Signs of discomfortinclude when the dog turns its head awayfrom you, when the dog yawns, flicks histongue out of his mouth or licks his nose, when the dog’s body freezes, when it movesaway, lifts its lips or growls. Also stop what

you are doingwhen the dog showswhale-eye(pronounced whites of the eye). This is oftenmisunderstood as a ‘guilty look’ when it isactually an appeasement gesture in re-sponse to the stimulus.“Never corner a dog and do not reprimand

a dog when it growls. This is a language pri-or to a bite. Growlingmeans that you shouldleave the dog alone. If your dog bites some-one, do not place the dog in a similar situa-tion. If necessary, confine the dog in a safearea with water and shelter and immediate-ly seek the assistance of a qualified trainedand professional animal behaviourist.”Walpole says an unfamiliar dog should be

ignored. “Do not encourage an unfamiliardog to approach you. Quietly and calmlywalk away, and never turn your back.”

Ek is tans besigmet rehabilitasieen hopelik is ek binnekort weer terug opdie veld.”

Altyd sportbehep“Ekwasnog altyd sportbehep enmy lief-

Maak opofferings“As rugbyspeler maak jy baie opoffe-

Kleintjie, is van kleintyd my grootste in-spirasie.

daar.

It has been quite a magical and heart-warm-ing start to the season for StrandfonteinHigh with a match-winning performancethat had the partisan crowd on edge in theMr. Price Foundation High Schools SoccerLeague. The growing pains of the team, affection-

ately known as the “Sea Robbers”, saw themfinish at the bottom of the 2015 league cham-pionship.But the struggles of the past did not im-

pede on the progress of the Strandfonteinside. The rejuvenated Strandfontein side

caused the biggest upset of the openinground by sending Cloetesville High, the de-fending and three-time league champions(2008, 2009 and 2015) crashing to a 2-1 defeat. With an excellent opportunity to redeem

themselves under new coach Jason Alexan-der, who was part of the playing team of lastseason’s squad, and team manager, ManoAdams, the lads in the blue andwhite dishedup good attacking, scientific football thatthroughout the game pressurised the Stel-lenbosch side – much to the delight of thevery vocal and noisy Sea Robbers fans. However, Chris Joubert’s Cloetesville-

side staved off early pressure. Scott Willi-ams, in the no.7 jersey, constantly troubleda very nervous Dean Gordon in goal.It was the home side, Cloetesville High,

that minutes before half-time surged 1-0ahead through a well execution pin-pointgoal, in which the team strung seven passestogether, before Ian Floris landed it safelyinto the back of the net.But after the change-over the schoolboys

from Strandfontein High, which still has75% of last seasons’ squad, started to gel andhad Cloetesville on the back football.Like a well oil machine the Sea Robbers

picked off the opposition with Andile Dickfirst scoring the equaliser (1-1). With tenminutes remaining on the clock the ever-alert and influential Scott Williams un-leashed a powerful snap-shoot that DeanGordon couldnot hold andparried it into theback of the net.Floris’ match-winning goal practically

sent the crowd into a joyous celebration.

Chris Joubert and his Cloetesville side willbe quick to admit they were no way neartheir best and that Alexander’s Strandfon-tein side fully deserve their morale boosting2-1 victory.Beacon Hill triumph over Oval NorthLast year’s league runners-up,BeaconHill

High, topped the log after the opening roundfollowing their 3-1 triumph against arch-ri-

vals Oval North High. However, they could find the going much

tougher against a stubborn and defensiveRocklands High side, who shared the points(1-1) with Lentegeur on Saturday.Beacon Hill was the only side to draw

home that won their game while six of theother teams, which drew away, picked upmaximum points.

Nevertheless, Beacon Hill held a 2-1 leadat the breakwith Azola Billy scoring a braceand with Curwen Barry finding the targetfor Oval North before Keith October addedthe third for good measure to secure threevaluable points.Mondale rise to the occasionMondale High – the 2012 and 2013 champi-

ons – showed glimpses of the side that wipedout all opposition for two consecutive sea-sons and had their long-time educator andcoach – since the introduction of the leaguein 2004 – Nigel Crowie smiling from ear toear.Though theMondale side beat a pluckyAl-

oe High 2-0, it was a victory that Riyaaz Nellmust be accreditedwith since it was his two-goal tonic that led the boys in the navy blueand gold jerseys on theirway to an emphatic2-0 win.Westridge edge out PrincetonWith the return of Ismail Gasnola – the

coach that helped Westridge High to wintheir second league title in 2010 after beinginaugural champs in 2004 – the school sidein maroon and white did enough with somequality playing methods to conquer Prince-ton High 1-0 in a quite an evenly balancedencounter.Though Charles Uys’ Princeton side, who

won back-to-back league championships in2005 and 2006, should have scored twice inthe first half through their industrious strik-ers Sayeed Mentoor and Cole Hartzenberg, they always fell short. In comparison Westridge High was full of

running, especially Lance Adamson whowas responsible for scoring the only goal aft-er been assisted by Chad Fredericks andJunaid Hendricks respectively.Other results: Tafelsig High 2, Glendale

High 1; Cedar High 2, Spine Road 0; PortlandHigh 2, Woodlands High 1; Lentegeur High1, Rocklands High 1.Upcoming fixtures to be played on Satur-

day 14 May at 09:00: Beacon Hill High vsRocklands High, Cloetesville High vs CedarHigh, Glendale High vs Spine Road High,Oval North High vs Aloe High. At 10:15:Mondale High vs Tafelsig High, WoodlandsHigh vs Lentegeur High, Portland High vsWestridge High, Princeton High vs Strand-fontein High.

KLUBRUGBY: AFRIGTER GESELS

AVRIL FILLIES

Hy is baie betrokke by die voorspe-lers.

At the tender age of twelve Enya van Niekerketched her name in history on Thursday 7April as the youngest female swimmer everto swim from Robben Island to BloubergStrand.

Whatmakes this feat evenmoreremarkable is the fact that shebraved the icy cold water withoutawetsuit. Enya’s attempt is recog-nised by Cape Long DistanceSwim Association (CLDSA).

The Table View PrimarySchool learner completed the7.5km distance in a time of threehours and 14 minutes.

“I trained five months for thisswimming in the ocean with thewater being between 13 and 15 degrees,” shesays. Some days were tougher than others, but in the end it was all worth it. Besides thecold water I also had to dodge hundreds of jel-lyfish which required focus to navigate it

safely to the end.“Brendan Hiscock who swam with me en-

couraged me and helped a lot. The first halfwas pretty easy, but soon after that the tideturned against us and it took a lot of mentaltoughness to complete the distance. I kept im-

agining I was in a hot tub,” laugh-ed Enya.

Her father, Leon, took her toBig Bay every day for her to com-plete her 2km swim. The goal wasto do 10km every week.

“I am a very proud dad. Enyashowed tremendous courage anda fighting spirit for five months. In the end all the sacrifices wereworth it. It was something shewanted to do and now she cantick the box,” said Leon.
