. From page 1.She says although he was warned by many

who were concerned over him driving hiswheelchair in the road, it was his way ofcommuting. “He loved to go to the casino, itwas his way of getting out and having somefun on his own. He wouldn’t even go to gam-ble much, but to be around people and social-ise. It’s as if he knew something was goingto happen to him because on the Thursdaybefore his accident he asked me for forgive-ness for anything he had done.”

His wife also says the family don’t blamethe driver of the car for what happened.

“We have made peace with the accident

and we also want the driver to make peacewith what happened.”

Warrant Officer Wayne Theunis, Good-wood police spokesperson, says the driver ofthe vehicle paid a fine for driving a motorvehicle without a valid driver’s licence anda case of culpable homicide is being investi-gated.

Anna Marie appeals to anyone who mayhave taken a navy checkered bag which Cor-nelius had on him at the scene to please re-turn it as all their personal documentationsuch as IDs were in there.

A resident from Eerste River had herliquor licence declined after she hadbeen trading without a licence for 14years.

Shebeen owner of Top Liquors, AnabelleLouis (38), had her hearing at the MfuleniPolice Station on Wednesday.

Disturbed residents and organisationssupported each other as they took theirturn to testify against having a shebeen intheir street.

“We are here to uplift the children in ourcommunity. We live opposite the Louisfamily and they have been operating for 14years. We have no problem with them but

would not like this kind of business in ourarea,” Said Maria Dhana, the Louis’sneighbour.

The board consisted of Raybin Windvo-gel, chairperson of the liquor board for theWestern Cape, Mxolisi Maputuma, a com-munity member and Lt Col JosephCleophas, provincial office police repre-sentative for liquor regulations.

Windvogel said that itwouldnot be in thepublic interest to grant the licence as theneighbourhood was a quiet one.

Even though Louis had been trading for14 years without a licence, there had beenno charges against her for trading illegally.

In fact, Leticia Petersen, from the licens-ing initiative of the South African Brewer-ies (SAB), who represented her, said that

she was a suitable candidate for a liquorlicence.

Some of the major concerns that arosewere the unorthodox clients that frequent-ed the shebeen. Two neighbours com-plained that people who came to the she-been would make a noise during the earlyhours of the morning.

This was because the Louis’s businesswas open 24 hours a day according to oneof the neighbours’ testimony. Some of theother complaints were that shebeen cus-tomers left beer bottles scattered around, urinatedagainstwalls andparked their carin front of their houses.

Neighbours from Silwood Heights saidthey found it a relief and were happy thatthe application was rejected.

Kleinvlei police officers along with thehelp of the Love Church in Bellville hitthe streetsonWednesdaymorning topro-file some of the children living there.

The search for street children started inBellville at the Love Church where streetchildren usually dwell. They then spread outto variousparts ofBellvillewhere they foundout that some of the children come fromKleinvlei. Children also came from other ar-eas such as Klakfontein and Delft.

The effort was a joint one between thechurch and the police station as SamanthaAmon from the church is a volunteer atKleinvleiPoliceStation. As shehasapassionfor looking after street children, she gath-ered some congregational members to teamin.

The aim of the police was to try and helprehabilitate the children into getting themoff the streets. They managed to profile 60children successfully for the day. Accordingto Sgt Carmen Marinus, head of social crime

at Kleinvlei Police, thechildren left theirhomes due to abuse anddomestic violence intheir homes.

“If you see the agesand hear their stories,it’s shocking; the agegroups are between 13and 20. Some of themhave been on the streetsfor the past five years. We are trying to slotthem back into the com-munity,” Marinus said.

Some of the help in-cluded trying to find ashelter for those whosefamily could not befound and trying to getothers back to theirfamilies. They were al-so given sandwiches and soup which weredonated by the Love Church and the VictimSupport Group.

Marinus said that helping these children

will reduce crime as one child confessed tostealing when he is hungry.

The feedback for this operation will bebrought up at the Bosasa meeting today.

Joint effort helps street kids

Profiling was done on street children by the Kleinvlei police andLove Church in Bellville on Wednesday. Here is Sgt Carmen Marinuswith Duncan Tewe from Happy Valley and Christo from Kleinvlei.

A 15-year-old girl from Forest Heights wasstabbed after being approached by two un-known men while she was on her way toschool.

Allegedly the girl was late for school andused the field as a short cut on Thursday.

The incident happened during 07:30 and08:00 when the girl was crossing a field be-tween Hillview, Forest Heights and TuscanyGlen. According to Sgt Carmen Marinus, the

field is quite enclosed by bushes whichmakes it easy for criminals to attack anyonepassing through there.

As the girl was walking over the field, twomen passed her but then one of the mencalled her to them. When she came to themen, one man asked her for R5, which shedid not have. He then asked her for a ciga-rette, but she told him that she does notsmoke. It was at that moment that the otherman said that he would get something out ofher.

According to Marinus, the man smackedthe girl in the face and then proceeded tochoke her. He pulled out a knife and stabbedher in the right thigh.

She went home to see if anybody was homebut there was nobody – she then changed herpants which was covered in blood.

When she went to school, one of the teach-ers took her to the Eerste River EmergencyServices where they treated her.

“We warn people to not cross fields whenthey are walking alone,” Marinus said.

Street lights in London Way, Paris Way(where I live), Hindle Road and other streetsin Malibu Village have been burning day and

night for years. Reporting this to Eskom, I wastold that street lights are contracted out andthat these contractors do not want to replace

faulty switches. It was discussed some timeago on the radio station Radio SonderGrense (RSG), by electrical engineers thatcables can be stolen with the lights on andthat this is the one of the poorest excuses.

The thieves worked for electrical companiesincluding Eskom and know what to do. Pleasecome and switch off our lights during the day.

Sometimes life has a way of getting usdown and when that happens, we moreoften than not, do not know who to turnto.

This is why a group of women in MalibuVillage have decided to get together threetimes a week to talk about their day to dayproblems. This group consists of five wom-enwhoare friends andneighbours and look-ing to help other women.

“I feel ourneighbourshave the sameprob-lems as we do, so why can’t we just get to-gether and talk about it,” asks Ann Solo-mon, who avails her home to the group.

Ann said that the women support groupthat they plan on starting will be held at theMalibu Village Recreational Centre. Allwomen are welcome and will be able to gettogether and discuss anything that is ontheir hearts.

A clinical psychologist will also lead thegroup once a week and women will be ableto get advice from a professional. The psy-chologist is from Kuils River and has agreedto give of her time as a favour to help others.

There will be a morning session for moth-ers who stay at home and two evening ses-sions during the course of the week.

“We really need to do something. Peopleare just living past each other. Women havea lot of responsibilities; some of them worktwo jobs. When they get home, they have totake care of their children and husbands aswell,” Ann said.

A support group is also a great way forwomen to make new friends. What’s moreis that these group sessions are free.

If anybody would like to know more, thencontact Ann Solomon on 084 313 1343.

“ ... And five, six, seven, eight, now jump andkick and jump and kick, now stretch ... ”

These militant orders can be heard fromSonia Booysen, who helps women get fitwith her Zumba classes. This Western Prov-ince netball player loves sport and is quiteenthusiastic about getting women in the ar-ea fit.

She runs these fitness sessions from herfriend’s garage in Malibu Village whichcomprises Zumba classes, yoga classes andaerobics. The classes have been going on formore than a month and have been gettingwomen fit the fun way.

“I was very excited when asked by myfriend to do these fitness classes, I felt likeI was walking on the moon. I am a sports per-

son and play netball. I usually give netballtraining. Last year I tried to teach netballbut it wasn’t successful as the youth had oth-er interests,” Sonia said.

She went further to say that the yoga class-es are given by her friend Ann, and womenfind it very relaxing. She claims that aftera Zumba class, one feels like a new person.

There are morning and evening classesthat both run from Monday to Thursday.Morning classes run from 09:00 to 10:00 andevening classes run from 19:00 to 20:00.

Sonia would like to uplift women in thecommunity and believes that through theseclasses women can gain confidence in them-selves. What makes these classes even betteris that they are free of charge so if gettingfit was one of your New Year’s resolutionsthen give Sonia a call on 079 461 7973.

The De Grendel Lions Club upheld thetradition of entertaining the TandemBlind Association of Cyclists ThroughSouth Africa with a braai and somedrinks at the Edgemead Sports Club onFriday evening.

This event came just two days before theCape Argus Cycle Tour, in which a handfulof blind and visually impaired cyclists fromall over the country take part.

These cyclists not only overcome exhaus-tion, but also the obstacle of being visuallyimpaired.

The cyclist in the front of the tandem bikeis called a pilot and the visually impairedperson in the back is called a stoker.

According to the local Lions president,Martin Kallis, the club is very proud of its

work with visually impaired people.“I have a passion for the blind people who

ride in the Argus!”Chairperson of the SA Tandem Associa-

tion of the Western Cape, Allen Swartz, saysabout 40 visually impaired people took partin Sunday’s Argus.

Swartz only has good things to say abouttheir relationship with the Lions.

“We are so amazed that there are peoplewho have so much love and kindness in thisworld.

“We depend on people who can see to prac-tise this sport,” he says.

. Meanwhile, on Monday TygerBurgerheard that one of the visually impaired cy-clists, Cindy Jacobsz, and her pilot, MickeyMinie, were involved in an accident just16km from the Argus finish line.

PROMOTION

In 2011 more than 750 children from disadvan-taged communities experienced live rugby. This was made possible by DHL Express wholeverages its sponsorship of the Stormers tointroduce the game of rugby to children fromunderprivileged backgrounds by hostingthem at local games.

As the sole sponsor of the Stormers rugbyteam, DHL Express sharedwith TygerBurger why theworld’s leading interna-tional shipping company ispassionate about support-ing South African rugby.

“DHL Express has aproud heritage of support-ing sports at a regional andinternational level,” saysCharles Brewer, managingdirector of DHL Express inthe sub-Saharan Africanregion. “Our corporatebrand is aligned to great in-ternational sporting prop-erties, includingFormula 1motor racing, the VolvoOcean Race and Manches-ter United soccer team.

“DHL has operated in Af-rica for over 30 years, andis present in 51 countriesacross the continent. While our brand is known by business leadersacross Africa, and our offering is well support-ed by small, medium and large enterprises, wehave recognised the need to establish a localsponsorship avenue to strengthen brandawareness and to drive top-of-mind recall.”

When choosing a sporting partner, DHL Ex-press looks for an activity that requires a com-bination of attributes that create winningcompanies as well as winning teams – namelyteam work, a can-do attitude, speed, passionand enthusiasm.

Brewer says the Stormers displayed these

attributes in abundance. “The DNA of theStormers reflects that of DHL Express. Add tothis the fact that rugby has such a wide follow-ing in South Africa, and it was a naturalchoice.”
