In a media statement de Lille said she hadrequested and urgent meeting with repre-sentatives from human settlements minis-ter Lindiwe Sisulu’s department, local go-vernment and Sanral. She said she wantedto discuss the legal and other requirementsrelated to the proposed relocation of peopleevicted from Lwandle.Sisulu’s spokesperson NdivhuwoMabaya

on Tuesday said the department wouldmeetwith de Lille.“We have indicated that wewill meet with

her. The minister is currently in Pretoria atthe cabinet lekgotla, but we expect her to re-turn this afternoon.”Asked about the planned relocation of the

Lwandle residents, Mabaya said: “The may-or knows what needs to be done. There arechildren that need to go to school. There arepeople that need tomove to a temporary pla-ce which the city should coordinate,”saidMabaya.“It does not matter if you are on govern-

ment or private land, if your house is bur-ning then they should step in.“The city should make sure there is tem-

porary accommodation.”

He continued by saying de Lille is awareof the task at hand.“She knows what we want, we need a tem-

porary re-zoning, but in her reply she saidthat it takes threemonths. These people can-not stay in thehall for another threemonths.“There should be a permanent solution,

those people should get permanent hou-sing,” Mabaya said.He said the portion of land in Blackheath

is just one of the options they have been con-sidered.“But with all of the options we are faced

with the same issue: zoning,” Mabaya said.According to him several residents have

indicated that they prefer staying in Lwand-le.“Some say it (Blackheath) is too far from

their work, and the schools.” However, hesaid the deparmtne would continue to eng-age with the people.“Whatever land is identified, we still need

the city to provide us with basic services,”Mabaya said.Wilma Brady, councillor of Ward 17, en-

couraged the Blackheath residents to forman interim committee.

Several Wesbank residents attended acommunity awareness day on substanceabuse this past weekend where they we-re, among other things, informed aboutthe various resources available to indivi-duals and families caught in this viciouscircle. The event was hosted by the Centre for

Justice and Crime Prevention (CJCP) onSaturday 7 June at the Wesbank Multi-Purpose Centre.CJCP facilitator Asia Small said the or-

ganisation is working on a project calledThe Family Preservation Project, andmany of the local residents visit the cen-tre on a daily basis wanting to access re-sources to assist them and help them co-pe.The project was implemented in 2010

and aims to build resilience in childrenand youth through the preservation oftheir family structures and preventingthese families from getting involved incrime and anti-social behaviour later inlife, said project coordinator Anthea Da-vids.“This is a small community and there

are not a lot of organisations that workwith people who are suffering from drugor alcohol abuse,” said Asia.“We thought for that reason to make

them more aware to get the different or-ganisationsavailable and letting themco-me and address them, to inform themwhere they can go for help,” Asia said. She said drug and alcohol abuse is a big

problem for families inWesbank. “We tryto have one of these functions at least twi-ce a year.”Sergeant Nico Hannes, member of the

Mfuleni Police Station, spoke about thelegal implications of being involved andusing drugs.“I also spoke about the role of the pa-

rent in the house. The parent need to takecharge of their children. They shouldknow where their children walk, the ti-mes they get home, and also search thechildren’s bags when they get home,”Hannes said.He said parents should start playing a

bigger role in their children’s lifes andbe-come a role model for their children.“Parents should knowwhat their child-

ren are busy with. They should encoura-ge their children. Stop promoting thewrong things in life, we must try to keepthe children on the right path.”JeromeTimmet, founder of theTimmet

Foundation, also addressed the approx-imate 50 community members.“I specifically spoke about the role of

the father and the impact he has on hisfamily and community, because family isthe cornerstone of everything.“Everything start with the family and

if you have a happy child in the familyyou have a happy child in the communi-ty,” Timmet said.He said that families have a big influen-

ce on a child’s life.“I explained to them the role of the fa-

ther is very important. Many times thesedays children grow up without having afather in the house.“Today the role of the father isunderva-

lued. You do not have to be the breadwin-ner in the house to be the leader of yourhouse,” Timmet said.He added that fathers should provide a

spiritual, moral and authoritative identi-ty in their household, to their childrenand family.

A age-old warning about a wave of“Drano bomb” attacks has been spreadingonce again on social media. This warning, attributed to the South

African Police Service, is nonsense, saysTable View station commander, ColonelDirk Vosloo.“It’s the first time I’ve heard about it,”

said Vosloo when TygerBurger asked himabout the warning. The information making people anxious

is that criminals put Drano (Jeyes Fluidin South Africa), tin foil and a littlewater in a plastic drink bottles and screwthe cap back on.They then leave it visible on your

property so that you’ll pick it up tothrow away. But the warning is that if the mixture

is agitated by being picked up, it willbuild up enough gas within 30 seconds toexplode with enough force to remove ahand or arm.

Spreading fearVosloo says that these warnings would

be circulated within the police networkbefore being made public, and he iscompletely unaware of any such activity.According to the website Hoax Slayer,

the message has apparently been circula-ting the globe since 2010, slightly adjustedto spread fear in local communities.“In many cases the bombs explode or

are disposed of without causing injury.Often, the homemade bombs do not go offat all,” states Hoax Slayer. The website nonethess advises care

when picking up suspicious lookingplastic or glass bottles.

The topic, “Neutrinos: Little spies in ouruniverse” will be the discussion at iThembaLabs’ public lecture later this month. The lecture is set to take place onWednes-

day 18 June.Prof Shaun Wyngaardt, head of the nucle-

ar physics research group at StellenboschUniversity, will introduce the unusual pro-perties of this subatomic particle and ex-plain how it could help scientists under-stand some of the universe’s mysteries.

“Neutrinos are one of the fundamentalparticles found in nature. They are also oneof the least understood,” says spokespersonBelinda Virét.Entry to the event, starting at 18:00, is free.“To encourage school learners to attend,

A Kuils River businessman and one ofhis clients recently escaped unhar-med when two armed robbers attac-

ked them along the N2 highway. The robbery in which the businessman,

Seppie Bornman, owner of Seppies Tours inSilver Oaks, Kuils River lost his cellphoneand wallet, occurred early Tuesday 13 Maynear the Girls & Boys Town in Macassar.Seppie was on his way to drop off a client,

a female passenger from Somerset West, atthe Cape Town International Airport whenthey were attacked by two unknown men.The passengerwas also robbed of her belon-gings.“Apparently these robberies are some-

thing that happens all the way along the N2and it seems that no one is doing anythingabout it,” Seppie told TygerBurger in an in-terview last week. The incident occurred at around 04:45 on

a route the tour operator often travels.“I was onmy way to the airport that mor-

ning. After passing the filling station on theleft I noticed a rock in the road.

Roadblock“I swerved left but drove over a piece of

metal that was thrown into road,” Seppieexplained. At that point he noticed that one of his’

tyres were damaged.“I still carried on for about 200metres, be-

fore I stopped.”Seppie started changing the tyres. “I took

the wheel off and was busy taking the sparewheel out when I felt something against myback.“I got up and turned around. I grabbed the

guy’s arm but then I felt a piece of metal,I think it was something he was going tostab me with,” Seppie continued.

Before he could do anything further henoticed a second person approaching.“They both demanded cellphones and

wallets. Theyalsowanted the lady in the carto hand over her cellphone and wallet.”According to him several vehicles passed

the scene while the rob-bery was taking place, but no one stopped.“I am sure the people

saw, but I don’t thinkthey wanted to get invol-ved.”He said after the rob-

bery the attackers calm-ly turned around andwalked away.

Traumatised“I think they went

back into Macassar.“I had to stay calm because I had a young

lady in the car. I had to get them away fromcar,” he said.He said despite the outcome, he and the

lady were both shocked and left traumati-sed by the experience.“Something like thismake youmore awa-

re of what happens around you. Now youconstantly look around. It is a feeling youcannot describe.“They evenhad the audacity to searchme

to make sure I have given them every-thing,” he said.He reported the matter at the Kuils River

police station. “They said that they willsend the information to the police inMacas-sar.”Twodaysafter theattack thepolice inMa-

cassar contacted him to informhim that hisbank card had been recovered.“A lady in the area apparently brought it

to the police station after she saw small kidsplaying with it,” Seppie said.He explained that he discussed thematter

with theMacassar police but they indicatedthere is little they can do.“They said that it’s a regular occurrence,

but that they do not have the manpower todo anything.”W/O Adele Pretorius from the Macassar

police station said noonehasbeenarrested inconnection with the at-tack so far.“The complainant

will onlybeable to comein to the police stationat a later stage to look atphotos of possible sus-pects who have been ar-rested for similar casespreviously,” she said.According to Pretori-

us, the police receivedseveral such reports at the beginning of lastyear. “It got quiet at some point until now,”she said. Since the beginning of the yearthree cases have been reported to the Ma-cassar police.

Continue drivingPretorius warnedmotorists not to stop in

such an event, but to rather reverse or con-tinue driving to the nearest filling station.Kenny Africa, Head of the Provincial

Traffic Services, said they are aware of theproblem along the N2.“We patrol the area regularly. We cannot

patrol 24 hours, but we try to always havesomeone in the area,” he said.Africa encouraged motorists to be more

vigilant. He said the traffic department alsomakes

use of CCTV cameras to monitor the hig-hway.

Most crime, such as home invasionsand hijackings, are motivated bygreed. Few criminals steal to put

food on the table.Christopher Plum, a 34-year-old former

prisonerwhodid a stint in prison for armedrobbery, gave insight into the criminalmind. The talk at Oude Moulen Technical High

school on Thursday 29 May was attendedby residents, police and the neighbourhoodwatch.Plum, who served 12 years of his 25-year

sentence for armed robbery, spoke freelyabout his life before his sentencing.“I believe I am a rehabilitated prisoner.

While I was in prison I had time to reflecton the things I did and how I hurt the vic-tims of the robberies I committed,” he said.“I felt I needed to change. No one should

be treated the way I treated people.”Plum joined the Prison Care and Support

Network while in prison. The programme is aimedat empowering inmatesand encouraging their re-form. He says many of thepeople whom he knewwere involved in houserobberies and othercrimes, were motivatedsolely by greed.“They want things that

other people have,” hesays. “They blame the sys-tem, they blame apart-heid, but they neverblame themselves.”An underlying anger builds up within

them and they try to convince themselvesif they commit a crime they would makethings even, he says.“Even though they know they are steal-

ing material things which can be replaced, the satisfaction of the crime lasts only ashort while.”Plum was released on Thursday 22 Octo-

ber 2009, a pivotalmoment for himas he feltrenewed and wanted to transform into abetter person. However, he says, his family still be-

lieved he was the same.“It was difficult for my family to accept

me, but after a while they realised I hadchanged. I was a different man. I was nolonger the uncle who would take his gun, walk two or three houses down the road, rob the people and use the money to buyfood formy family. I had changed,” he says.

House robberyPlum explained the process he followed

before committing a house robbery.First he and the thieves he worked with

would find a house suitable to break into. They would steal the mail, scrutinise it

for any details, and then look up the home-owner’s name in the telephone directory.Theywould thencall thenumber to check

if anyone was at home. After this they would go to the address

and keep it under surveillance, checkinghowmany people live there, what time theyleave for work and return, and if there isa domestic worker or gardener. After a week, they would know exactly

what the residents’ routines were. Then they would meet and devise a plan

of action.“After we have decided on the time and

day we would go to the house, one of uswould jump over the wall and wait in thegarden – in a place where it is dark, whereno one will see us,” he says.Plum said the real “trouble” starts when

residents return, pulling in to their drive-way and getting out the car. They would then strike.

“Do not try to be strong or in controlwhen this happens. Remember the robberis just as scared and nervous as you are. They do not want to go to prison or bekilled,” Plum says. The victim is threatened, taken inside

and bound. What follows is the systematic ransack-

ing of the house and taking any valuablesthey find.

Business robberyPlumsaid theywould always get an insid-

er to assist with information needed to pulloff the robbery. At business robberies theywould charm the secretary or receptionistand so obtain information. At home robber-ies, they would target domestic workers orgardeners. The gang would rent a “nice” car – at a

rate ofR150 aday – fromacar rental agency. They would then drive to the airport, finda car with matching colour and model, andcopy that vehicle’s number plate and serialnumber.

“Wehad a guywhowouldcut a new number plate forus and we would removethe number plate from thehired car and replace itwith the new one,” he says. One of them would then

dress smartly and show upat a business they are tar-geting in the hired car.Once inside they would

usually target a womanworking at the business.“We would take her out

and get to know her and af-ter a while the questioning

would begin,” he says. The woman would be asked where the

“boss” kept the safe and where the panicbutton is, Plum says.“We would then follow the boss to and

from work and once we get to the workpremises we would rob them.“Usually we would not rob a place with

a panic button, because it is silent and onecannot hear it. If there is one we wouldabort the robbery,” he said.Plum’s advice to business owners is to en-

sure their staff walk around with cordlesspanic buttons, as the robbers are familiarwith the usual spot a panic button is placed.“We would know if someone attempts to

press the panic buttonwhen theykeep theirhands below the desk. Do not put your lifeat risk. Keep calm and always do as the rob-ber says. This way no one will get hurt,” hesaid.Plum said he discovered that through

Prison Care and Support Network’s work-shops and talking and dissecting the cir-cumstances of his crime, he realised and ac-cepted he had no valid reason to be a crimi-nal.“Blaming my circumstances on the past

is false motivation, because we know whatwe are doing is wrong, especially when weare in the act of committing the crime. Weknow deep down what we are doing couldget us killed, sentenced to prison or resultin the death of an innocent person. But wedo it becausewe thinkwewill be better off.”Plum’s honesty won his audience over

the general attitude fromresidentswas thatof appreciation. Many questioned how they could safe-

guard themselves and their property. He also told them to change their routine

as criminals are quick to track their everymove and use this to their advantage. Peo-ple should ensure they remain observantand report suspicious behaviour to the po-lice.Security systems should be regularly

checked and kept on at all times as crimi-nalswill take advantage of any laxity on thepart of homeowners or business owners.

Reformed conexposes thecriminal mind

“They want thingsthat other people

have,” he says. “Theyblame the system, they blame apart

heid, but they neverblame themselves.”

Security complex targeted by burglarsRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

A resident of Bardale Village was rob-bed of his valuable belongings re-cently while he and his family were

still fast asleep.Mark Askin (44) told TygerBurger this

week how two thieves allegedly broke intohis house at the security complex in Sil-versands on Friday 30 May and robbedthem of their property.

A laptop, cellphone, cash and cigaretteswere stolen.

Fingerprints were taken at the sceneand sent away for tests.

The incident occurred around 03:00.“I came home late that night after ha-

ving worked a double shift. We went to bedafter 02:00.

“My daughter said she heard a noise inthe house at 03:00 but she thought that itwas me,” Mark, a father of three, explai-ned.

Everything lockedHe said the doors and all the windows

were locked that night.“My daughter heard something in the

kitchen but no one got up. I am glad no-thing happened to my daughter becauseshe sleeps in a bedroom downstairs,” saidMark, who has been staying in the com-plex for two years now.

It was only after getting up in the mor-ning that the family noticed what had hap-pened.

Mark woke at 08:00 and started lookingfor his cigarettes.

“I could not find them. The money thatwas lying next to them was also gone.

“I asked my wife, but she said that shedid not take them.

“I opened my wallet and saw that it wasempty,” he said.

They then saw that the laptop and cell-phones were also missing and realisedwhat had really happened.

“We realised that they broke into our

house and that they gained ent-ry into the house through one ofthe side-windows.”

The thieves, according toMark, left through the back doorbefore jumping over a fence.

The matter was reported tothe Mfuleni police.

Mark said he noticed two setsof foot prints outside the house.

“My wife and I have also sincedistributed pamphlets in thecomplex to inform residentswhat happened.

“Some of the residents havesmall children.

“Some of them already have incidents ofhousebreaking that had occurred but theydid not report it.”

He said many residents have become toocomplacent due to the complexbeing secured.

“Some people also go to bedwithout locking their doors.”

The couple also sent a letterto the Bardale Village HomeOwner’s Association, complai-ning about the security. The as-sociation, according to him, in-dicated that they will look intoit.

“My wife and kids are all nowconcerned about their safety.”

On Thursday Mark said theresults of the fingerprints weremade available but a suspectcould not be traced.

FootprintsLinda Vermaak, estate manager at Barda-

le Village, told TygerBurger the security gu-ards at the complex investigated the matterand found footprints outside the resident’s

house.“We advised the owner of the house to re-

port the matter to the police as well, seeingthat it is private property,” Vermaak said.

She said the complex has 24 hour securityand access control.

“When people come to visit they have toreport to the security and sign in, and resi-dents are all issuedaccess cards,” she explai-ned.

Vermaak said security guards usually pa-trol inside and outside the complex.

“We did everything to assist the owner, but unfortunately these sort of things oc-cur,” she added.

Capt Nomathemba Muavha, spokesper-son for the Mfuleni police, said the police arecurrently investigating a case of housebrea-king and theft after anunknownsuspect bro-ke into the house in Bardale Village and sto-le a number of items.

It was onlyafter getting upin the morning

that thefamily noticed

what hadhappened.

Daar is twee gr. R-klasse, twee gr. 1-klasse

LeerbehoeftesBy die Snap-sentrum word een-tot-een-on-

dryf.

(IEP). Dis ’n geïntegreerde program wat by

borde en rekenaars, asook iPads..Die Want Ons Kan/’Cause we Can!- kon-

Principals urged to display leadershipRICHARD ROBERTS

Principals, deputy principals and headsof department from across the Penin-sula congregated in Kuils River this

past weekend to attend a Quality Manage-ment Conference.Organised by the Woolworths Making the

Difference Educational program, MySchooland theWestern Cape Department of Educa-tion, the eventwasheld at theCapeTeachingand Leadership Institute in Kuils River. The aim of the seminar was to provide

principals and heads of department with ad-ditional leadership skills to manage theirschools more successfully.Guest speaker and former principal at

Grey’s Academy in the Free State, JohanVolsteedt, told principals on Saturday mor-ning that if they want to influence peoplethey need to bring their hearts to school. He told principals, slowly but surely if

they keep grinding away they can achievesuccess.“It is essential that we improve all the ti-

me,” he said.“We have to try to achieve something bet-

ter in ourselves. Your knowledge, your pas-sion and compassion, the students should beable to bring that into their own lives,” hecontinued. He said upholding good values were very

important.Volsteedt said principals should always

encourage learners to be products of theirchoices and not of their circumstances.“All children have hearts, they have

goodness in them but often they have cir-cumstances that are thrust upon them.”Newly appointed Western Cape MEC of

Education, Debbie Schafer, who addressed

the crowd earlier during the morning, saidher department’s ultimate objective for thenext five years is to deepen and strengthenquality education for all.“Critical to this vision is leadership within

our schools, leadership that consists of astrong principal, an equally strong deputy

principal, a supportive and constructiveschool governing body and a passionate andcommitted heads of department team.“Each of you here today are absolutely es-

sential in providing a quality education toour learners,” Schafer said. She said principals are first and foremost

responsible for the efficient management oftheir departments.“In other words, how well your depart-

ments run is largely the result of the decisi-ons you and your management team take.“You are also essential in providing direc-

tion and educational vision both within yo-ur school and community.“You have the professional responsibility

to standupandconstructivelyquestiondeci-sions which affect your department and theinterests of the learners at your schools,”She said it is therefore critical that they

ensure all heads of department have theskills and knowledge to lead their depart-ments effectively, offering support to theirprincipals and management teams.“That is why the department has over the

last few years initiated training workshopsthat target the roles and responsibilities ofheads of departments through numerousprograms at this very venue, as well as cour-ses for aspiring principals and school lea-ders.”Others in attendance included Head of

Education Penny Vinjevold, Woolworthsmanagement staff, andadventurer andmoti-vational speaker Braam Malherbe.

Several principals, deputy principals and heads of department attended a Quality ManagementConference this weekend in Kuils River. The newly appointed Western Cape Minister of Education,Debbie Schafer, addressed them during the course of the morning.

sie aanhangig gemaak is.Volgens Allan Perrins, provinsiale hoof

Soos ek ver-

Lt.kol. Andre Traut sê ’n ondersoek is be-

In response to Johan Swart’sletter “Só kan die W-Kaap syblou behou” (TygerBurger, 4June).I agree politicians and ward

councillors, irrespective ofwhich party they represent, should be more visible in ourareas.I come from a typical Cape

Flats coloured community, where service delivery is

almost non-existent. Some areassuch as Uitsig, Bonteheuweland Bishop Lavis, just to namea few, seems as if they wereforgotten after families wererelocated there during apart-heid. Change has occurred, butfor the worst. Never have I seenanyone come to sweep thestreets of Uitsig like they do inthe suburbs. My mother requested Premier

Helen Zille’s assistance ingetting her pension reinstatedmore than two years ago. Todate, we have not had a singleresponse from her or her office.I guess the poor are only goodenough when their votes areneeded to keep the WesternCape blue.I am tired of plastic smiles

I would like to share my joywith all TygerBurger readers. As I am completely deaf, I

was forced to move to Dalabat,a home for the deaf, and I didnot know what to expect. Well,I can assure you, Dalabat is ahaven. The staff are incredible. They work so hard and cookand clean. They see to the frailand sick seniors with so muchcompassion. They always havesmiles on their faces and all theresidents are very friendly. It is like one, big, happy

family. There is such a warm and

pleasant atmosphere – norushing, stress or tension. And the food is very good.I can truthfully say I am so

happy to be here. When Iarrived I was given a lovelywelcome and I instantly joinedthe happy family.May God bless all the staff

and residents, and may Hispeace and love grow from dayto day, so that others who comehere may feel the presence ofGod.

My seun koop twee tennisballevoor skool by ’n Chinesewinkel.

A sad story with a very happy ending. This is the tale of Smiley and Jes-

se, two “old maids” of the dog world, whowere found feral, neglected andheavi-ly pregnant in a townshipby thepolice andlater handed over to the Animal Anti Cru-elty League (AACL) in Bellville.Rene Southwood, general manager of

the AACL, tells their story, which startedthree years ago when the two pregnant da-mes were brought in from Khayelitsha.“They foundaplacenear the police stati-

on where they both gave birth (to 17 pupsbetween them) and raised their pups,” Re-ne said. But both dogs were feral, meaning they

had had little or no contact with humans.

Harrassed and stoned“They had been harassed and stoned by

the people, especially the children of thecommunity,” she said. “The staff at the po-lice station knew that something neededto be done urgently and contacted us.”“I will never forget the day the two of

them were brought to our premises. Theywere scared beyond belief. We were notable to move them with leads and we hadto carry them in,” Rene said. The two black Labrador crosses were

made comfortable and became part of thefamily, she said, showing care and com-passion when taking care of each other’spups. This is when they became Smileyand Jesse. The pups were adopted and the Smiley

and Jesse began their rehabilitation.“Slowly they made progress. After a ye-

ar we were able to put collars aroundthem,” Rene said. The two became the AACL Bellville’s

mascots, but they still needed a forever ho-me.“We sometimes got very despondent, not

being able to find them homes, but we ne-ver lost hope.”A lady came and adopted one of their

animals and saw the “mammie pair”.

InseperableThe two dogs were then introduced to

the woman’s pack, and Rene admits theydidn’t know what to expect last Sunday.“We took them for a walk, all together,

and it all went without incident. Then wetook them to the yard, to see how thingswould go off lead.”Smiley andJesse just stuck together, not

leaving each other’s side for a second. The-re was no problems with the other dogs.”She said their new owner is a “calm and

patient” person and saying goodbye washard.“It was very hard to leave them there.

We were told that once we left, they panic-ked and tried to get out of the gate afterus. It was a very bittersweet moment, al-most like leaving your own dogs behind, but we know it is the best thing for them. And I am happy to report that is is goingvery well“Their undying love and commitment

for each other is a example to us all.”

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

Internationally celebrated local singerand songwriter Louise Day is busy wor-king on new music for her fans.Louise describes hermusic as folk pop. “I

started out as a folk guitarist when I learnthow to play the guitar,” she explains. Her latest single, “Nothingville”, is a per-

fect example of this. The song has alreadybeen picked up by Smile FM, 94.5 KFM,MFM 92.6 and Groot FM, and she recentlyperformed it live on SABC 3’s ExpressoShow.Louise also has a new album on the way.

Although it doesn’t have a name yet, the al-bum will be released towards the end of theyear and Louise says it’s going to be more“singer/songwriter” than her last album,Swallowed by the City, which earned her aSAMA nomination for best pop album. She says the new albumwill bemore chil-

led out, but still have something for everyo-ne. Louise is working with producer Den-holm Harding of Just Jinjer fame, who’s al-so just finished work on the new PrimeCircle album.

International scene“He is really is a very talented guy, so I’m

very excited to work with him,” Louisesays.Wanting to explore the International mu-

sic scene, Louise temporarily moved toAmerica where she regularly opened for in-ternational acts at premier live music ve-nueBellyup. The exposure led to her perfor-ming as a Fender musician at the Winter XGames and Tempe Music Festival in Arizo-na where she performed on the same stageat The Fray and John Mayer.Fender USA also asked her to endorse

their range of guitars for women. After returning to South Africa, Louise

and her band released two albums beforestarting work on the third.“I learnt that good music goes down well

anywhere,” Louise says of her experiencein the US, adding “it’s really fun to just playto different audiences.”Louise also learnt there are fantastic mu-

sicians overseas and she is a small fish ina big pond, butmore importantly, she foundthe variety of music and musicians she ex-perienced inspiring. When asked why she came back, Louise

smiles broadly and says: “There’s no placelike home.”

OpportunitiesShe says the local industry is prospering

and there are many opportunities for localmusicians, which makes her excited towork here. She cites the size of the Ameri-can industry as the biggest difference bet-ween here and there.“But at the end of the day it’s the same

in that great music wins,” she says.Louise says she is alwayswritingnewma-

terial and developing her live performan-ces.“Every show is a learning experience as

much as it is a fun experience.”Her focus this year is on creating and per-

forming the best possible songs. She’ll be hibernating a bet this winter

while she focuses onworking on the album, and fans can expect lots of new songs comesummer. In the meantime, fans can see her tonight

at Mercury Live in the CBD with Joshua K.Grierson,BadynHolesgrove,BlairTaberer,Dave Bryant, Nathan Woodman, CandiceBrewis, Werner Von Waltsleben, Leandiand Lelani Van Den Berg from 20:30 forWaxingLyrical. Tickets costR40 at thedoor.

Kevin Schwartz, owner and producer ofthe Battle of the Titans showcase andPresident of IFBB Western Province,

has taken South African bodybuilding andbikini fitness to the next level.Following last year’s successful launch,

the show to be held at the CPUT Bellvillecampus on Saturday 21 June is the talk ofthe town.Battle of the Titans II prizemoney is in ex-

cess of R150 000 - something that seemedonly a dream for athletes a year or two ago.The overall Titan Warrior will walk away

with a whopping R10 000, Ladies and Men’sAthletic Physique Overalls will receiveR5 000, nevermind the addition prizemoneyand gifts in all the line-ups.Adding to that, South Africa’s newest

IFBB PRO bodybuilder, Andrew Hudson, will make his first guest pose appearancesince turning professional.Local lad Xolile Damba was the overall

winner last year and crownedTitanWarrior2013. He will have his hands full retaininghis title.World Junior Champion Bodybuilder

Louis Bessinger from East London will dobattle as a senior at this event and challengethe Ultimate Warrior 2014 crown.Due to the fact that you never really know

who will compete at a bodybuilding show, one will only know at weigh-in the evening

before the competition. However, there aresome big names expected to come fight it outon stage for the spoils.“The response has been nothing short of

phenomenal. Everyone is talking and loo-king forward to Battle of the Titans II. I real-ly do think this is the biggest and best showever to be held in Cape Town - in fact SouthAfrica. Altogether 100 VIP tickets went onsale and were sold within days,” saidSchwartz. Standard tickets are available atthe door on the day.“If you look at the record turnout of athle-

tes we had a fewmonths ago at the SSNCapeClassic, this is going to be muchmore enter-taining with special effects and lighting. Ihave added a opening surprise for all athle-tes and spectators,” says Schwartz.“Wehad 134 athletes competing at the SSN

Cape Classic show, for Battle of the TitansII we could easily double that number. Thegrowth of the sport in the country but especi-allyWesternProvince is incredible. I believethe public and athletes supportme andwhatI stand for,” he said.Due to the fact that a large number of ath-

letes are expected to compete, the weigh-in,whichusually takes place themorning of thecompetition, has been moved to the Fridayevening. It will all happen at the Cape Peninsula

University of Technology in Bellville, withweigh-in and registration on Friday after-noon from 17:00-20:00.

RACING: LOCAL HERO EXPECTED TO SHINE AT KILLARNEY THIS WEEKEND

Wet weather excitement

Table View’s Brad Wadeley is one of the favourites in Saturday’s Makita Supercar races at Killarney.

Table View’s hard charging BradWade-ley is expected to be one of the starsin the Makita Supercar events during

the fourth round of the exciting WingfieldMotors Power Series at Killarney on Satur-day.A former Supercar titleholder, Wadeley

was back to his best form during the mostrecent meeting when he won the first raceon a track that was still difficult to navigateafter earlier showers. His opposition on Saturday is going to co-

me from drivers such as veteran RichardSchreuder, as well as current champions-hip leaderNickAdcock, who has the advan-tage of years of international experience, of-ten in poor weather conditions. While the inclement weather that has

been plaguing the Cape will hopefully havemoved along the coast by the weekend, ifit hasn’t, the driving is going to prove parti-cularly interesting.A wet surface can be relied on to produce

a spectacular contest that will be much ap-preciated by discerning spectators protec-ted from the rain by their brollies and wa-terproof boots. There are always surprisesand, while spectators might be treated, it isnot every competitor’s cup of tea.

With talk of entries from 18-year-old new-comer Jonathan Aberdien, whose fatherChris was an Audi works driver in the hea-dy days of exhaust popping turbochargers,it will be interesting to see how the young-ster copes with the conditions. Then there’s Bellville’s charismatic cur-

rent national champion Kosie Weyers, whois somewhat surprisingly going to be seenin a lowkey classC car in the JiveGTiChal-lenge events. His presence alone will ensu-re this category becomes evenmore of a he-adline attraction. While the bigMasters V8’s will miss joint

Gold class leader Craig Jarvis who is cam-paigning in Europe, there could be a threatfrom Charles Arton who was in fine formduring the recent Jaguar Simola KnysnaHill Climb. However, with points awarded separate-

ly for performances in the Gold and Silverclasses, Franco Donadio leads the Silverclassification, with reigning championMarcel Angel and Jarvis pegged level in thepremier Gold title chase.A number of other categories are being

catered for during the 18 race all-day mee-ting, including Midas Clubman cars, BigFoot Express Sports and GT cars.

Cash and glory will be up for grabs whenCape Town’s best under-23 football sidesface off in the Arising Stars tournamentthis weekendThe annual competition hosted by Ken-

park United offers R10 000 in prize moneyand a year of bragging rights for the win-ners.A total of 24 sides will vie for the spoils

in this edition of the tournament, with 14National First Division (NFD), ABC Mot-sepe League and SAB League teams auto-matically qualifying, and 10 enduring gru-elling play-off rounds, which saw 30 teamseliminated. As expected, this year’s field will be

strong. Teams from Tygerberg, NorthernSuburbs, Mitchell’s Plain, South Peninsu-

la andCapeDistrict localfootball associationswill participate.Group A will see Mor-

genster United, Wood-lands United, Salt RiverBlackpool and RetreatFC face off for two spotsin the second round. In Group B Milano

United, Liverpool Port-lands, Battswood and FCTafelzucht will lockhorns.Crystal Palace, Bay-

hill United, Ikapa Sport-ing and Bishop LavisUnited will make up Group C, while inGroup D, Cedar United, Leeds Lentegeur,HeathAthletic and Sunningdale FCwill dobattle.

Host club KenparkUnited will have to fighttheir way past WestridgeFC, FC Orient and Rock-afellas FC in Group E.Group F features

Glendene United, Juven-tus, Riverside Rangersand Greenwood Athletic. The professional sides

in the tournament can beexpected to dominate thetournament and mostwill see their waythrough to the last 16.Manenberg’s Crystal

Palace compete in theABC Motsepe League (Safa Second Divi-sion), along with Salt River, Blackpool andGlendene – all three fall into the favouriteshat for this tournament.

Palace’s senior team usually play fast-paced, attacking football and theunder-23swill trouble oppositiondefences if they rep-licate this.Glendene’s first team is usually packed

with youngsters, regardless of the tourna-ment, and that high-level experience couldgive the defending champions an edge.Milano United will undoubtedly be a

handful as well. While none of the side’sNFD players will turn out at the tourna-ment, theABCMotsepe side is packedwithmore than enough quality to challenge thetitle.Woodlands United, last season’s Mitch-

ell’s Plain LFA Super League winners, andIkapa Sporting could be capable of causingupsets. The tournament kicks off at Stephen Re-

agon Spots Complex on Saturday 14 Juneand run until Monday 16 June.

Cape’s top football teams to lock hornsTeams from the Cape

Town Tygerberg,Northern Suburbs,

Mitchell’s Plain, SouthPeninsula and Cape

District local footballassociations will par

ticipate.
