Don’t Let Summer Slip Away Without Play! From The Editor Kim Thomas

When I visited Camping World tosee the many RVs, fifth wheels andtravel trailers, I had just returned froma family camping trip to GinnieSprings, located about two-and-a-halfhours north of Trinity in HighSprings, Florida. One of the greatthings about living here in west centralFlorida is that there are so many differ-ent landscapes to explore within just afew hours. If you haven’t tried it,camping and RVing is a great way toget away from the madness of US 19and to get you and your family awayfrom their phones, computers andvideo games. When you go camping, you really don’t have a choice – youhave to relax!

In Florida, my family has campedas far south as Key West and north tothe pristine beaches of St. GeorgeIsland and Cape San Blas in Florida’spanhandle. But one of the best tripswe ever took as a family was in an RV.Two weeks in an RV allowed us toexplore Mammoth Hot Springs andOld Faithful in Yellowstone National

Park, see herds of elkand buffalo, swim inBear Lake in Utah, and see the wondrousvistas of the GrandCanyon in Arizonaand Bryce Canyon inUtah. It was a tripthat my kids, nowgrown, still talk aboutyears later.

Looking aroundat all of the great gearat Camping Worldgave me the fever to go exploringagain. But next time, I plan on being abit more comfortable with some greatgear from Camping World.

My husband and I aren’t ready toretire yet, but I look forward to theday when we’ll have even more timeto break out of our everyday life andexplore the beautiful landscapes acrossAmerica and after a trip in an RV, Ithink I could get used to the RVlifestyle!

Whether you are camping or justgoing for a day trip, don’t let the restof the summer slip away without get-

ting out and enjoying nature. Wehave some of the most beautifulbeaches in the United States, andFlorida’s clear rivers and springs offerthe perfect getaway on hot summerdays. Chassahowitzka Springs is per-fect for a day trip. Just an hour northof Trinity, in Citrus County, there areseveral places along the Chassahow-itzka river to rent canoes or kayaks.

Growing up in Wakulla County,we swam in Wakulla Springs and thelocal limerock sinkholes every sum-mer. I can tell you firsthand, a dip in aFlorida spring on a hot summer day issimply thrilling!

FOSTER HOMES NEEDEDImagine being taken away from

your home, not knowing where youwill go, leaving behind your favoritethings. Now, imagine this throughthe eyes of a child. There are morethan 3,500 dependent children inPinellas and Pasco counties in needdue to child abuse, neglect or aban-donment. Many of these childrenwill need to live in a temporary fosterhome, but we simply cannot meetour growing need without more fos-ter parents. When you open yourheart and home to foster children, you open possibilities for them...youfoster hope. Foster parents must beat least 21 years old, have appropriatehousing, and pass a backgroundscreening. Then, you will need tocomplete a home study and 24-hoursof special training called ProfessionalParenting. You must have adequatespace and be able to provide for yourfamily now—although you will re-ceive financial assistance to help carefor the child, you cannot rely on thisto pay your bills. To be a foster par-ent, you can be single or married—have a family of your own or be an“empty-nester.”

Eckerd Community Alternatives

oversees the foster care system inPinellas and Pasco counties and en-sures the safety, well-being and per-manency of 3,100+ children eachday. Children in foster care didn’t askto be abused or neglected. They did-n’t ask to be removed from theirhomes, forced to change schools, or,in some cases, separated from theirsiblings. Today’s foster parents pro-vide temporary care for children, butleave lifelong impressions on theirlives.

Custom furniture may soundexpensive, but with today’s technol-ogy and computerized woodwork-ing equipment that is no longer thecase. Personalized furniture is nowavailable at very affordable pricesand offered in a wide array of attrac-tive colors and finishes. Home or-ganization has benefited greatlyfrom this trend.

Custom closets are quickly be-coming a standard option for home-owners. Improving the storage andorganization in a closet can add asmuch as three times the usual capac-ity of the old standard rail and shelf.Beyond the benefits of extra storage, custom closets look great and canadd value to the home. Additionalbenefits include finding clothing oraccessory items faster, enough spaceto keep clothes neatly pressed insteadof crushed and the additional roomto add new clothes.

American Coin program quicklywent through those first 2,000 coins.By selling the coins to others whowanted to say “thank you” to ourmilitary, the Grateful American Coinprogram was able to donate proceedsfrom each sale to organizations thatprovide support services to theseverely injured men and womenof the U.S. Armed Forces.

Today, the Grateful AmericanCoin has recognized over 51,000soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and

Veterans. Additionally, it has donatedmore than $113,000 to partnerorganizations, including The SpecialOps Warrior Foundation and Pawsfor Patriots.

Even more powerful than thenumbers are the personal storiesbehind each of the 51,000 coins. While waiting to board a recentflight, Benson “coined” an Armyhelicopter pilot to thank him for hisservice. After receiving the coin, hewent to the Grateful American Coin

A Grateful American: How Passion andProfessionalism Inspired Gifts of GratitudeSome of Deb Benson’s most

cherished childhood memories arefrom visits to her grandfather’s farmin Temple Terrace, where she wouldfish in his lake. Since then, the land-scape has changed dramatically, butBenson still visits that farm — almostevery weekday. As a manager in theFlorida sales operations departmentat Verizon Wireless, Benson’s officebuilding stands where that farm oncewas, and she can see the old fishinglake from her desk. Benson has ledand inspired many people in her 26-year career with Verizon Wireless, working within nearly every depart-ment, including customer service, marketing, operations and sales. But,it was only eight years ago that Ben-son assumed a personal leadershiprole that would touch tens of thou-sands of lives outside her company.

Around the Fourth of July holi-day in 2007, Benson was searchingfor an engaging way to teach hersons about the expression of grati-

tude. As she researched ways to showappreciation for the selfless men andwomen who defend our country, shehad an idea to have special coinsmade that they could present tosoldiers and thank them for theirservice. Benson found that uniquemilitary coins are often collected byservice members, or even earnedthrough achievements or to enhancemorale.

So Benson and her family de-signed a coin of their own. As Ben-son set out to place a small order fora few of their new coins, she discov-ered that to qualify for a price break, she would need to purchase 2,000.Inspired by a legacy of family patriot-ism and her professional passion toconnect with others, Benson decidedto expand the idea rather than scrapit, and that was the beginning of theGrateful American Coin program.

Focused on providing a tangibleway to display gratitude to those whoserve our country, the Grateful

website, where he realized he hadreceived his coin from the organiza-tion’s founder. When the planelanded, Benson was walking outwhen she heard someone say, “It’syou, it’s you!” She turned around tofind the Army pilot waiting on thejetway for her to express his heartfeltappreciation.

“It’s inspiring to show sinceregratitude to the people fighting forour freedom every day,” said Benson.“Their personal stories are the mostbeautiful gift, which I never ex-pected.”

Grateful American Coins havebeen framed by recipients, laid at anunmarked grave in Normandy andburied in the caskets of servicemen, but one of the most impactful mo-ments for Benson was learning abouta 13-year-old who received a speciallydesigned coin for the families of thefallen after his father passed away.Dealing with the death of a parentcan be very hard, and this youngman was no exception. It was diffi-cult for him to talk about it, so heused the coin to drive the conversa-tion. When he went to bed at night,he would leave his coin out on thenightstand as a signal to his momthat he wanted to talk about his loss.

This is just one of many encour-aging and emotional stories sharedon Grateful American Coin’s websiteand Facebook page. The coin wasthought up as a way for Benson toshow her sons whom the true heroesare in today’s world. And if they’veever stopped to think about the51,000 experiences those coins havegenerated, they’ve probably realizedthat their mom is one, too.

Nearly four summers ago Trinitybecame home to the first TCBY Self-Serve on the West Coast of Florida.Owners Patti and Jay Silar opened thestore with their daughter Jenifer Silar-Mills, who is the store’s marketingmanager. The idea of opening theTrinity location came quickly to Pattiand Jay when they visited a TCBYSelf-Serve store in Charlotte, NorthCarolina. The amazing taste makes ithard to believe the frozen yogurt is96, 98 or 100 percent fat free. Thecouple knew it was a great business tobring back home to Trinity, where ourhot days make cool treats even morescrumptious.

TCBY, also known as “The Coun-try’s Best Yogurt,” originally opened in1981, and is the oldest frozen yogurtcompany in the United States. Thecompany has high health and qualitystandards that appeal to Patti Silar whois a retired RN. Patti says, “TCBYtakes pains to purchase products thatare high quality. Fruit is sanitized tomeet TCBY requirements, and wedon’t use frozen fruit because it turnsto mush on your yogurt. Our fruit are

in their own juices instead of syrup.”Jay Silar adds, “Our yogurts are

kosher and Halal certified. We wantto meet our customers’ needs.”

TCBY’s yogurt is delicious, smooth and creamy. The possibilitiesof flavor combinations and toppingsseem endless, but you many not haveknown it has great nutritional value, too. TCBY has super frozen yogurts(Super Fro-Yo), which is a new classifi-cation of frozen yogurt that sets a highstandard for nutrition within thefrozen yogurt industry. To qualify as aSuper Fro-Yo, TCBY’s frozen yogurtsmeet or exceed (based on a four oz.,half-cup serving) having at least threegrams of fiber, seven types of live andactive cultures, four grams of protein, and 20 percent daily value of vitaminD and calcium. The fiber and probi-otics in TCBY yogurt help you feelsatisfied and aid your body in diges-tion, boosting your general health.Vitamin D and calcium are also essen-tial for bone and muscle health. Theprotein in TCBY yogurt containsamino acids that help proper musclemaintenance. Eating healthy hasnever tasted so good!

Summer Martin truly values hav-

ing healthy dessert options. She says,“We love the Trinity TCBY. Ourdaughter has insulin resistance and itis hard to find a low sugar option fordessert. TCBY always carries a nosugar added flavor and would let usknow when it arrived. The staff atTCBY is so friendly and treated us liketheir extended family. When it cametime for my daughter’s birthday she

couldn’t imagine having it anywhereelse than at TCBY and several of thestaff were there to wish her a HappyBirthday. When we found out that wewere moving to a different town, thestaff got together to say goodbye andeven gave us a going away card! Theyalways went above-and-beyond tooffer great customer service. We loveour Trinity TCBY!”

Trinity’s TCBY is bright and fun, with a textured wall that changes col-ors. Between the music, bright colors, and cheerful staff, Patti, Jay and Jeniferhave created an atmosphere that’s per-fect for enjoying a treat. Unsure whichof the ten flavors you should try?Don’t worry! An employee is happyto give you a sample. You don’t needto decide on just one flavor either. You can fill your 16 or 25 oz. cup withas little or as much as the cup can hold.

Bananas are available to turn yourfrozen yogurt into a banana split. Ifyou don’t like your flavors mixing, cupdividers can be used to separate them.

The ten available flavors rotate orchange periodically, but there is alwaysa no-sugar-added option and a non-milk based option. For example, Silk™Coconut Milk and Silk™ ChocolateAlmond Milk are the current non-dairy options available. In the upcom-ing months additional frozen yogurt

flavors TCBY will be carrying includeEnglish Toffee, Blueberry, ChocolateChip Mint and Apricot. After you dis-pense your frozen yogurt, head overto the topping bar, which has over 45different toppings to choose from, including fresh fruit and crushedReese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Thereare plenty of kids’ favorites such asgummies and candy chocolate rocks. You can top it off with hot chocolatefudge or warm walnuts in a caramelsauce. It’s possible to come to TCBYevery day of the month, and never puttogether a repeat combination of yo-gurt and toppings!

Jay, Patti, and Jenifer are involvedin several community projects andfundraisers including Taste of Trinityand Long Leaf Fall Festival. As activemembers of our community, you’llspot the TCBY “car” around town,

and at places such as the New PortRichey and Tarpon Springs ChristmasParades. There are many reasons we loveour Tampa Bay Rays! Of course, there are the games, where everyinning has its white-knuckled, yell-out-loud moments and the breaksare filled with laugh-out-loud anticsthat keep the live audience participat-ing. There is no doubt, as you watchthem heat up the diamond, that theRays players have their heads andtheir hearts in the game. Further-more, they have put their hearts intothe Tampa Bay community and haveput their heads together to make areal difference for the people livinghere.

Spanning the organization fromthe players to the management, theTampa Bay Rays make it their teammission to stay active, both on andoff the diamond. The Rays organiza-tion is much more than entertain-ment and finely tuned athleticism –though we do love that! From theplayers and their families to the cor-porate employees, the Rays are dedi-cated to making a difference in thecommunity.

One way that the Rays havebeen a positive force in Tampa Bay isthrough the Rays Baseball Founda-tion, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organiza-tion that supports youth educationdevelopment. The Tampa Bay Raysand their support team continually

pitch in to help families and individu-als in our community through chari-ties, volunteer programs andpartnership affiliates.

This Summer: RAYS UP For Our Community!

Most recently, the Rays created anew campaign called “RAYS UP forOur Community.” Launched onJune 1st and lasting until September20th, the “RAYS UP for Our Com-munity” campaign focuses on fourkey areas – Kids, Heroes, Health andEducation. Additionally, every gameduring each two-week campaignflight will highlight a partner agency“Everyday MVP” on the telecast andsocial media.

The four key areas of focus eachhave a Rays team ambassador, includ-ing pitchers Chris Archer and MattMoore, manager Kevin Cash andinfielder Evan Longoria. Each cam-paign has a deep personal meaningfor them.

Tampa Bay Rays president BrianAuld says, “We enter the 10th year ofStu Sternberg’s ownership with a re-newed focus on our mission to ener-gize our community through themagic of Rays baseball. The ‘RAYSUP For Our Community’ campaigncelebrates our community partnersand helps share their successes with awider audience.”

Matt Moore heads up theRAYS UP for Heroes campaignfrom June 29th to July 12th.Matt chose RAYS UP for OurHeroes, stating, “Baseball is ournational pastime but we wouldn’tbe able to enjoy it without the greatmen and women who protect us. Igrew up on an Air Force base so Iknow firsthand that American he-roes, like my dad, sacrifice everyday to keep us safe. Your TampaBay Rays are committed to energiz-ing our community through themagic of Rays’ baseball and support-ing those who give so much for ourfreedom. Join us as we rally ourcommunity around active dutymilitary, Veterans, first respondersand their families.” RAYS UP forHeroes highlights the “EverydayMVPs” in our community to thankthem for their service and dedicationto the safety of our community.

For the period of August 2–16,the “RAYS UP for Our Community”campaign switches to Tampa BayRays manager Kevin Cash’s focus,RAYS UP for Health. Cash and theRays organization is inspired to pro-mote health within the communityand give thanks to healthcare profes-sionals in the Tampa Bay area. Withhis daughter born with a congenitalheart condition, Kevin Cash has ex-perienced that we have another sec-tor of heroes in Tampa Bay – theones who look after our health. Cashwill be working with Rays’ partnersto raise awareness for health in ourcommunity with RAYS UP forHealth!

Rays ambassador Evan Longoriawill RAYS UP for Education. TheRAYS UP for Education part of theRAYS UP for Our Community cam-paign will last from September 7thuntil September 20th. Since 2006,the Rays Baseball Foundation has

Dr. Albert said, “This year Ibrought three other dental profession-als with me. It’s a six-hour ride on dirtpaths; it’s an eye-opening off-road ex-perience to help people who need it.”Adding, “If we aren’t there helping,no one is.”

Treating 160 patients and pulling130 teeth, Dr. Jeremy Albert, Dr. MarkMitchell, Dr. Matt Burton and Dr. T.J.Albert worked together to relieve painin patients caused by dental issues.

Dr. Albert explains, “We try to

save the teeth that we can, but some-times in remote areas of the world, pulling diseased teeth is the definitiveanswer to the pain they’re goingthrough.”
