Our Advertisers

W e are now finally in the Winston-Salem area. The

May issue will be widespread around the city,

please check our website for locations where we

can be found.

This month’s cover story is one we are very proud of. Our

Guilford County Animal Shelter and Executive Director, Marsha

Williams, have won statewide awards for their dedication and

efforts to improve the lives of animals in our community. This

was presented by the Humane Society of the US and NC Voters

for Animal Welfare as part of the Shelters We Love awards.

Our trip out to our shelter this week hit us hard, we were in

awe of the staff and the things they see and do every day. Their

attitude and dedication are an inspiration, I honestly don’t know

where they find the strength, but they do. I sincerely hope our

readers will consider volunteering at our shelter, I am sure it

would be well appreciated.

“Ask the Vet” continues to be an informative and interesting

feature. These veterinarians continually offer cutting edge

information that enlightens our readers with the latest

techniques, designed to improve our pet’s well-being.

Hope you take the time to read our Success Stories this month,

plus our Training Article. Featuring people and animals from our

community is part of what we do. We feel like it is important to

publish local stories about local people and their pets. Hope you

enjoy them as much as we do. And, please send us your stories,

we’d love to include them.

We have added some more new advertisers this month. Look

for some new animals and new businesses from our friends

in Forsyth County, we welcome them to our publication. Our

advertisers are the ones who help make this publication possible!

Please try to support them when looking for products and

services. They are an integrable part of what we provide.

May 2011 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails8

It is Wednesday morning again and

the management team is hard at

work evaluating our past week’s

adoptions - which animals found

their new home, who was returned

and which pet was not able to go home with

their new family and why.

Our next step is to consider those who

have entered the shelter that week - why they

are here, what help can we offer them if they

are unhealthy, who needs a foster family, and

who may need socialization before they can

go into adoption.

Next we consider those who are already

being treated in our trauma and quarantine

facility - who is getting better, who

may need to have surgery or visit our

veterinarian, who can be placed for

adoption.

After carefully evaluating those issues and

more, we begin to look at each individual

animal and decide if we need to call a rescue

to place him/her with, who can be placed

in our animal transport program, who to

send out to foster care, who to schedule for

surgery or heartworm treatment or for other

medical treatment, who should

begin training in our obedience

or agility program, who to place

in our perfect pet program and

who can be placed in adoption

right away. Some animals are

also scheduled for a grooming

appointment, temperament

testing, and medical evaluations

and checkups. Wow !!! What a

daunting task. We still have not

addressed the other challenges

that we have to face each day, but

we are energized and ready to

make a difference.

Our goal each week is to

save as many lives as possible,

and you can only imagine how

challenging it can be to make the

right decision for each animal,

just due to the sheer number of

animals that arrive at the shelter

each day. In 2010 over 16,000

animals came into the shelter.

We were able to place 54 percent

of those animals into adoptive

homes. And we are always ready

to face this challenge because of our love

for the animals and our passion for the work

we do. Ideally we would like to exceed the

54 percent adoption rate and strive each day

toward this goal. We continue to evaluate

our adoption procedures to help reduce the

number of animals returned to the shelter by

educating the adopter on the animal’s breed

and characteristics and how that will play

into their lifestyle, offering training videos

to help with the issues that may arise with an

animal adopted from a shelter and providing

free pet care insurance to each adopter along

with a care package for their new pet. We

provide follow up visits or telephone calls

randomly to check on the adoption and to

answer any questions the adopter may have

about their new pet.

The citizens of Guilford County and

the staff at the Guilford County Animal

Shelter are in a unique situation because the

shelter is operated by the United Animal

Coalition, a non-profit organization that has

the contract to operate the only public open

door shelter in Guilford County. Because

the shelter is run by the United Animal

Coalition and the community is a great

supporter of our organization, we are able to

raise the needed funds to think outside the

box and help more and more animals find

their forever homes.

We love to comfort those who come

into the shelter afraid because they are in

a strange place. We feel compassion, pain

and sadness for the animals that come into

the shelter because of the abuse and neglect

they have had to endure. We nurture those

who come in with trauma and illness, we

celebrate those who graduate from our

socialization and training programs. We

welcome puppies and kittens back from

foster care and are so happy that their lives

were saved because someone opened their

home to them when they needed a little

TLC. We take pride in providing the public

with an animal that is going to bring joy and

love into their family. In all the sadness that

we face each day there is hope.

We continue to think outside the box

for ways to help the animals here at the

shelter and to keep our euthanasia numbers

low and our adoption rates high. But we

cannot save the animals through adoption

only. We cannot adopt our way out of the

overpopulation of pets in our community.

There are just not enough homes for the

number of animals out there. People need

to spay and neuter their pets. Contact your

local veterinarian and discuss the benefits

of spaying or neutering your animal or

contact a local low cost spay/neuter clinic

in your area. You can also save lives by

thinking outside the box - by adopting

instead of shopping when you want to bring

a new pet into your home. Together, we can

make a difference in the lives of our local

pet population.

The Guilford County Animal Shelter and Shelter Executive

Director Marsha Williams received state-wide awards in

Raleigh on April 12th. They were honored for their dedication

and efforts towards improving the lives of animals in our

community. The awards were presented by the Humane

Marsha Williams and the staff at the Guilford County Animal

Sully, named after

Captain Chesley Sul-

lenberger, thinks he is

destined for great things

having been given this

name. He knows he is

handsome and he knows

what he wants, so we

are sure he is going to

at least have a great life!

Sully came from a litter

of six kittens born on

1/1/7/11. His favorite

pastime is to play with his sisters and entertain them. Sully is look-

ing for his forever home...might you be that?

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in meeting Sully. n

Dillard and his brother

Lewis are little Christmas boys,

born 12/25/10. Both are solid

black and weighed 2-3 lbs when

they came to our program. They

have the sweetest dispositions

and love nothing more than to be

held and fall asleep in your lap or

arms. Dillard and Lewis are crate

trained and their Foster Mom is

working hard on housebreaking. They both get along well with the

resident 3 dogs and would love to spend all their time playing with

them. Dillard loves his blue stuffed bone and carries it in and out of

the crate with him. If you are looking for a small companion who

loves to snuggle and give puppy kisses then these guys are for you!

Call 574-9600 to meet Dillard. n

Sienna is a born

leader. She likes to

help her brother and

sister and is teach-

ing them the ropes

of becoming good

kitties. Born on

1/17/11, Sienna loves

to play chase and

hide and seek with

her siblings. She is

an entertainer and

will bring fun to any

home that she goes to. Kitten shenanigans are her expertise.

If you think you might be interested in adopting Sienna, contact

ARFP at 574-9600. n

Kent. Meet Bad Boy Kent...

and we say that with lots of

affection. Kent was rescued by

a very nice lady who proceeded

to name him after her ex-

husband...not sure what that was

all about. She could not keep

him in her apartment so she sought out ARFP. Here are the things

that make us love Kent so much, and you will too, he is inquisitive,

nosey, smart, beautiful, cute, and very entertaining. Kent is always

into something but admits to nothing! Ever had a kid like that? That’s

our bad boy Kent. Kent loves other cats and would prefer a home

with a feline companion to play with. Kent will soon be approaching

a birthday on 5/15/10 and is wishing for a forever home to celebrate

being a one year old! Can you make his wishes come true?

Call ARFP at 574-9600 to meet Kent. n

Molly. Meet

Molly! Molly from the

southside, the south

side of Greensboro

that is, near Asheboro.

Molly was born on

2/2/11 and is a beauti-

ful girl, possibly with

some Collie relatives

and maybe some Shep-

herd relatives also. No

matter her heritage,

she’s our Molly now

until she finds a home.

Call 574-9600 to meet

Molly. n

siblings in a home that didn’t

necessarily want him. He wants

all the things that a young puppy

deserves: kisses, hugs, belly

rubs, toys and a full tummy at

feeding time. Born on 01/19/11,

he is so thankful that his foster

mother rescued him and is showing him what it is like to be a part

of a loving home. She tells him all the time that his family is coming

and to wait patiently. Denver is ready to pack his bags and move into

your home. He is up to date on his shots, loves to play with other

dogs (including his sister Dundee), and is learning to respect the cats

in his home. Won’t you consider adding Denver to your family today?

Call ARFP at 574-9600 to meet Denver. n

A native of Virginia, Dr. Hodges came to Greens-boro in 1985 and graduated from UNCG with a Biology degree. He received his Doctor of Veteri-nary Medicine in 1997 from Tuskegee University in Alabama and currently co-owns Brassfield Animal Hospital. His interest in alternative medicine led him to get certifications in acupuncture and chi-ropractic which he has integrated into his practice to treat dogs, horses and cats. He is a member of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, International Veterinary Chiropractic Association, NCVMA, AVMA, and AAEP.

Hunter Hodges, DVM Ask the Vet

What Is Animal Chiropractic Care? Chiropractic care mainly addresses the spine but may also involve adjustments to the lower limbs. The spine starts at the base of the skull and is composed of vertebral segments all the way to the tail. Each ver-tebra of the spine is connected by multiple ligaments and joints making it very flexible but movement to the entire spine is critical to the overall health and well being of the animal. Nerves come off the spinal cord and travel through small spaces in the vertebra, and then go to muscles, organs, glands etc. Problems occur when a joint in the spine becomes “stuck” and does not move in its full range of normal motion. When a joint gets “stuck”, it is called a Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC). A VSC can have many causes, but the most common is some form of trauma such as a slip, fall, or even day to day repetitive activity. The lack of mobility in the vertebral joints leads to inflammation and swell-ing in the region, often causing muscle spasms and pain. The goal of Chiropractic care is to reestablish the full range of motion to the stuck joint with an adjustment thus relieving inflammation of the nerves.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care utilizes very specific, quick, shallow adjustments of the spine using the doctor’s hand or fingers to restore normal range of motion to the stuck joint. The thrust will restore normal range of motion of the joint and relieve the pain and inflammation cycle caused by the stuck joint. It is important to note that all adjustments are made within the joints normal range of motion. When people complain about back or joint pain, they often say something is “out” but most often nothing is out of joint but rather stuck in its normal range of motion. If something was truly out then this would be an emergency situation such as a dislocated hip or shoulder. These are dramatic, severely pain-ful situations and are not a part of normal chiropractic care.

What Do Adjustments Accomplish?

When the normal range of motion is reestablished by the adjustment, the animal can move in a more comfortable and coordinated manner. Symptoms like abnormal gait or posture, neck or back pain, and reluc-tance to jump or climb stairs will often improve. Dogs doing agility or performance activities will also benefit from routine adjustments.

How Often Should Adjusting Be Done?

The frequency of adjustments varies by animal and severity of the case. There will be some cases where the VSC can be fixed with one treat-ment and others where routine work is necessary to help prevent prob-lems. A lot will depend on the use and activity level of the animal. It’s

similar to comparing a fairly inactive person to a football player. The less active person goes to the chiropractor once or twice a year when they get a stiff neck and the football player who gets whacked around every day may need weekly adjustments. In general most animals will show improvement after 1-4 treatments. Acute problems often respond quickly while chronic or longstanding problems will require more along with maintenance treatments.

Do Animals Like Chiropractic Adjustments?

Most animals do seem to relax and enjoy the attention but there are a few worry warts that get a little stressed until they figure out what’s going on after a few treatments. Ultimately though, the goal is to help our pets be more comfortable and minimize or reduce dosages of long term medications.

How Will I Know If My Pet Needs Adjusting?

All animals should be under regular veterinary care. If you suspect a problem with your animal that may be helped by chiropractic therapy, have your veterinarian examine the animal first and then contact a veterinarian trained and certified in chiropractic care.

Louie is a very sweet boy who is

absolutely gorgeous! He is very shy

(due to being chased by kids for the

past couple of years) and will hide until

he gets comfortable with you and his

surroundings. But once that happens,

he will be your best friend. He loves to

be petted and brushed and he will sleep

right next or on top of you. Louie is a

bit shy at first, but he will come to you if you sit and call him. Over

time, as he gets used to you and your “activities”, he will shy away

less and less. He loves to play with catnip filled-toys and to play

chase with the other cats. Louie is a sweet cat who just wants to be

loved. Louie is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines.

Louie’s adoption fee is $60 until the end of May. Call 378-0878 for

more information. n

She is a very sweet cat with torbie spunk who will make a wonderful

Opie was found in a

Greensboro cat colony and

was taken in to be neutered.

While he was in human care,

they found that he was not

feral; only very scared and

shy. Opie is now enjoying

the house cat life. He enjoys

spending time with his other kitty friends. He is a very easy going cat

and is very good with young children who are gentle with him. Opie

is a little shy around strangers, but is very comfortable in a quiet, low

stress environment. He is a vocal cat who “chatters” a lot and usually

comes when you call his name. He loves to snuggle and sit in your lap.

Opie is neutered, up-to-date on his vaccines, and will be microchipped.

Opie’s adoption fee is $60 until the end of May. Call 378-0878 if you

think Opie may be the cat for you. n

Maya is a sweet little girl with a

gorgeous, blue-silver coat that is as

soft as cotton. She is very laid back

and her favorite toys are soft balls

with feathers and the turbo scratch-

er. She also likes to run through crin-

kle cubes and tunnels. She LOVES

people and must be with you at all

times, preferably touching you! She will get on your lap if you are

sitting and will rub all over your legs if you are standing. And if you

are lying down, she of course will be right there on the next pillow.

She will follow you from room to room and just hang out where ever

you are. Maya is a wonderful little cat who just wants to be a part of

the family. Maya is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines.

Maya’s adoption fee is $60 until the end of May. Call 378-0878 for

lings were found in

a restaurant parking

lot in Greensboro.

They were only 5

weeks old and had

been dumped there

with a black tail.

As you can see, he loves to wrap up in blankets and make himself

cozy...would you let him get cozy with you? Raja is neutered, micro-

chipped, and up-to-date on vaccines.

Raja’s adoption fee is $110. Call 378-0878 if you would like to meet

Raja. n

Linus was born in April

2007. He’s playful, and has

a big purr. Linus and his

siblings were rescued from

underneath a parked boat -

the best place their mother

could find for her little fam-

ily. Since Linus has grown

up, he has blossomed into

a beautiful BIG boy! His foster mom put him on a “diet and he has

shed a few pounds. Linus’ favorite past time is to get treats, he will

sit up for you and give a chirp for his “treats”. Linus gets along with

other cats and loves to try and fit on your lap to get loving. Linus is

neutered, up-to-date on his vaccines and microchipped.

The adoption fee for Linus is $60 until the end of May. Please call

Bethany is a young petite

beagle who loves to have fun. She

prefers male dogs as playmates and

can keep up with the best of them!

Bethany was on death row at an

animal shelter in VA when we came

to her rescue. Bethany needs a fenced

yard or a family who likes to go on

long leash walks. Due to her beagle

nose, running loose is not an option.

Once she puts that nose to the ground, there is no telling where she

could end up. Bethany is probably only about 2 years old, so she still

has some “puppy” in her and would need to be crated when home

alone. She is a quiet dog who loves getting attention from everyone.

This sweetheart has never met a stranger.

Bethany’s adoption fee is $100. Call 393-0000 for more details. n

Little Rosie is about

5 months old. She appears to be

a boxer mix. Rosie will probably

be about 50-60 lbs when she is

full grown. This sweet pup loves

life and everyone in it! She has

lots of doggy friends in her foster

home, so she is learning great

social skills. She has normal

puppy energy, which means she

goes 90 miles an hour and then crashes for a nap, wakes up and does

it all again. Rosie will have free puppy training classes included in

her adoption fee. We want her to learn good manners while she is

young, so that she will be a joy to have around. Rosie would make a

wonderful companion for a medium to high energy adult dog.

Rosie’s adoption fee is $100. Call 393-0000 for more details. n

Holly. My name is Holly and I was

born on Halloween 2004, but I am no trick,

just all treats!! I lost my home about a year

ago when my mom became ill and had to go

away. The people she trusted to take care of

me put me outside in a dog lot! This was very

upsetting for me because I was used to being

in the house all comfy and cozy. It was such

a cold winter with lots of snow. I don’t know

how I made it through. Luckily a family

member stepped in and got me out of there.

I look like a puggle, but we know who my

parents are and my dad was a pekingese and my mom was a poodle/

schnauzer. I am housetrained and very friendly. I do still have some

“puppy” in me. I enjoy having fun!

My adoption fee is $100. Call 393-0000 for more details. n

Mr. Beasley. Hi,

My name is Mr. Beasley. If I

look a little sad it’s because my

mom died recently. No one

in the family could take me

and that’s how I ended up for

adoption. I am hoping there’s a

great person who will adopt me and love me forever. I know a lot of

people prefer puppies, but there is a lot to be said for an older guy like

me. I’ll turn 7 this year, so I do still have a lot of good years left. I

am a long haired dachshund. I do fine with other dogs, but also would

be perfectly ok as a spoiled only child! I like most people, but prefer

a calm household without new people coming and going all of the

time. So a house with children is probably not a good choice for me.

I weigh 13 lbs and enjoy nice leisurely walks and getting attention.

My adoption fee is $150. Call 393-0000 to find out more. n

Melanie. Are you look-

ing for a little companion who

will be totally devoted to you and

follow you everywhere? Do you

have a lonely dog at home who

would love a playmate? Melanie

may be just what you need! This

playful 4 year old weighs 13 lbs.

She is great with all dogs and

people. Melanie is a little timid

at first meeting, but is your best

friend if you have a treat or give

her a loving rub. She is a quiet dog who would be fine in an apart-

ment or condo setting. Melanie was rescued from an animal shelter

and is ready to find her forever home.

Melanie’s adoption fee is $100. Call 393-0000 for details. n

Herbie is a pre-

cious quiet boy who is

so happy to be out of

the shelter. Now all

he needs is a family

to love him forever!

We estimate his age

to be 9-10 years. But

this sweet senior still

has a lot of love to give. Slow, short strolls on a pretty day would be

delightful for this little dog. He had his teeth cleaned so he can give

fresh kisses. We do not know how this precious baby ended up in the

shelter. He appears to be housetrained and is friendly with all people

and other dogs. Do you have room for a sweet senior canine citizen

in your heart?

Herbie’s adoption fee is $100. Call 393-0000 for more details. n

Juni came to Red Dog

is a typical hound who likes

a family who will let her explore her world and work on her man-

ners. She isn’t a bad dog at all but just doesn’t know all of her basic

manners yet. You will need to be patient with her as her nose does

occasionally overrule her ears. You couldn’t ask for a sweeter gal!

Farm but her owner has recently

become very sick and can no

longer care for Molly. So Molly

came back to us in order to find

a new home. She is a big girl

and is still filling out. Although

Molly is a big girl, she is a very

sweet and smart girl. She LOVES to be with her family and is good

with all people. Molly is very curious about everything. Molly gets

along fine with other dogs, cats, and loves kids.

If you would like to find out more information on this lovely girl

please visit www.reddogfarm.com! n

Dino was originally adopted from

RDF as a puppy. However, due to

recent financial loss and medical

problems the family is no longer able

to keep Dino. He is now happily

living in a foster home waiting for an-

other family who is ready and willing

to love him. Dino loves people but

LOVES exploring the great outdoors

with his human companion even

more. He walks well on a leash and

does fine with other dogs but doesn’t understand cats. He would love

to be with an “outdoorsy” kind of person who would love a faithful

companion to explore and go hiking!

If you are interested in adopting this awesome lad please visit our

website, www.reddogfarm.com! n

Hilda came to Red Dog Farm

Animal Rescue Network because her

owners felt they could no longer give

her the time and attention that she

needs to be happy. Hilda has never

been mistreated or abused and LOVES

human attention and interaction. She

is very social for an Amazon Parrot

and enjoys talking to her family. She

can say “Hi Hilda”, “Good Morning”,

and “Step Up”. Hilda loves to listen to music, especially Sugarland.

Hilda comes with her own cage, toy box, toys, perches, and very own

copy of her favorite song by Sugarland. *Note: We are referring to

Hilda as a “she” for now although her gender is currently unknown.

For more information on adopting this fun and entertaining diva

please visit www.reddogfarm.com! n

Pete. Sweet Old Pete came

to Red Dog Farm Animal

Rescue Network from the

Guilford County prison farm,

where he had been housed

by the county because he had

been abandoned. Pete was a

stallion when abandoned but

was gelded last August. We

have tested him under saddle

and he was a very patient and sweet but a tad lazy. He’d be great to

lead children on right now and with a tune up would be a nice trail

horse. He currently is sharing his pasture with Finally, one of our

other current adoptable horses.

Please visit www.reddogfarm.com to inquire about this handsome

gentleman! n

Heithcliff. This little guy is

about 4 months old

and absolutely sweet

as can be. Life was

not so good for Heath

command training and is

100% crate trained. He is

a playful guy with bound-

less energy! If you like

throwing tennis balls, this

is your new soul mate.

Call the SPCA at 375-3222 if you would like more information. n

Bianca. Look at

this gorgeous 7 month

old snow white kitty!

attention. Bianca likes

playing with her toys

and loves to cuddle.

Please call the SPCA

at 375-3222 to adopt

Rachel. This sweet

little hound mix was brought

to the SPCA when she was 3

days old! The staff members

began round-the-clock bottle

ful as can be! Rachel loves

playing with her sisters and

giving tons of kisses! She is a

Tim is a friendly

gray and white tabby,

neutered male. It’s esti-

mated that he was born

in August 2009. He

was found in a neigh-

borhood playground,

alone and looking for

company. He very

quickly settled onto a

comfortable lap on the

swing set and purred

and purred as his head was stroked. He was brought to an AARF

volunteer when his new friend was unable to find his family.

If you would like to adopt Tim, contact his AARF foster at

[email protected] for more information. n

Duke. Meet Duke!

He’s a handsome fella...

but don’t tell him that,

you’ll make him blush!

Duke’s a purebred Bull-

mastiff and is approxi-

mately one year old. He

came to us by way of a

local shelter when his

owner died. Duke was

very shy and not in great shape when we got him, though he is now at

a healthy weight, approximately 100 lbs. He might be a big dog, but

he’s all puppy. Duke has been well socialized during his time in foster

care, and would love to go to a home that will continue to socialize

him and teach him all about this big world!

Call 768-7387 if you would like to meet Duke. n

Lee. Hello there!

I’m Lee! I’m a big

boy - almost 1 year old!

I am smaller than my

brother but I am just as

bold. I think of myself

as a small lion. I am

scared of nothing but I

will warm your heart.

I have the sweetest

personality and I love

backrubs.

If you’re interested in

meeting me, please

contact AARF foster at

[email protected]. n

Samantha. Meet Samantha!

She and her sisters were born the

day after their mom was turned into

the shelter by her owner. Samantha

and her mom and sisters came to

AARF just after the puppies were

born. We’ve watched them grow into

happy healthy little girls, and now

they are ready to find families of

their own. Samantha is super friendly

and inquisitive. She is a typical

puppy that loves to run and play, but

once she wears herself out, she is

content to snuggle and nap. Samantha’s date of birth is 3/3/2011, and

she will be at her first adoption fair on April 23.

Call 768-7387 to find out more about Samantha. n

Findley is a handsome

orange and white tabby,

about 4 years old and FIV

positive. He’s a sweet laid

back boy and would love a

forever home where he can

sit in a lap and watch TV.

This boy has so much love

to give. Are you looking for

a lap cat?

If you think you might want

to give Findley the forever

home he has been looking

for, please send an email to

[email protected] for

more information. n

Ginger is a Beagle/Lab

mix and is approximately 11

months old. She is a super

friendly little girl who never

meets a stranger. She’ll hap-

pily run to greet you with a

big smile on her face and her

eyes shining with happiness at

someone new to interract with.

Ginger loves playing with the

other dogs in her foster home

and will happily run, wrestle,

tug and romp with any of them that want to play. She is a sweet little

girl whose wants & needs are very basic - a home of her own where

she can love & be loved for the rest of her life.

Henry. Hi, I’m Henry! I was

brought to FHS after I was found in

the middle of the road, scared and

injured. At the time, I had a thick

chain embedded in my shoulder,

and boy did it hurt! I’ve been

through a lot, but I love people and

am quick to make friends. I went

into foster care while recovering

from my injury, and I just loved it

there! I stayed inside the house, got

lots and lots of food, and a warm, cozy place to sleep at night. The

constant love and attention was icing on the cake! I hope my forever

family will treat me just as great. I would love a home with a big

yard to play in, and a family who is patient and kind.

I’m currently in New Leash

On Life and everyone is very

impressed with my progress.

I am very obedient- I’m

learning all sorts of tricks and

am getting along great with

the other dogs in the program.

I would love a home with a

big yard to play in, and a fam-

ily to call my own! I’m very

smart- just you wait and see

what I’m learning from my

inmate trainer!

Cecilia! I was found as a

little puppy wandering on the

side of road and am in need

of a forever home. I am a

ball of energy and with my

goofy personality, I’m sure

to keep you laughing. Right

now I have my own personal

trainer in New Leash On Life.

He’s not helping me lose

weight- he’s helping me learn

to behave and listen better! I

just love showing off what I can do now, so I hope you’ll think of me

when you’re choosing your new pet!

ish! I am a loving dog who

is happiest when utilizing my

high energy! I would love to

be adopted by an awesome,

active family who would want

to take me on runs, trips to

the doggie park, and maybe

even a baseball game! I’m in

New Leash On Life currently,

and am learning basic obedi-

lot of exercise. If you come

meet me, I can guarantee I’ll

be wagging my tail and have a big smile on my face!

Bunny! I am a pretty

girl who is sure to be a

wonderful, loyal pet to

the person or family who

adopts me. I never put my

elbows on the table, but I

do tend to pull on a leash.

To help improve my man-

ners I’m currently in New

Leash On Life. With the

help of my trainer, I’ll also

learn tricks and the dog

agility coarse there! Hope you’ll choose me as your new four-legged

family member!

Joey. Hi, I’m Joey! I’m

only 1 year old and I’m an

American Bulldog. A kind

woman rescued me and my

sister from a shelter where

we were at death’s door.

Thank goodness for her!!!

We were so emaciated, but by

being given a second chance

we have both made huge

strides in the right direction. I am currently in foster care, continu-

ing to gain weight and play with the other dogs here. It’s great here,

but I hope to find my own home with my own family soon. If you

think you would like to take me home I think we could have a blast

together! If I sound like your type of guy, please come visit!

Call 721-1303 if you would like to meet me. n

The grounds of the Forsyth Cor-rectional Center, a minimum-security prison in Winston-Salem, are fairly typical as prisons go. Razor-wire wrapped black fenc-

ing surrounds the “yard;” prisoners in green clothing go about their assigned work; security guards in blue uniforms make their rounds. There’s the squawk of guards’ walkie-talkies, and the loudspeaker that echoes everywhere, booming instructions to the prisoners. What is remarkable is the sight of dogs racing through an agility field; inmate-trainers working with 30-foot-long leashes, teaching a “long stay;” and the sounds of four yipping pups play-ing with Frisbees and balls on the fenced field in the training center. And the most usual sight? Six men laughing and giving one another—and the dogs—high fives. On this day, it might be because one dog—a particularly rambunctious or especially stubborn or terribly fearful one— has finally “gotten” it. Maybe a “sit” or a “stay” or a “leave it” or maybe just that tiny bit of trust that every-one’s been hoping and working for. Welcome to A New Leash on Life at the Forsyth Correctional Center, which is changing men’s lives, one dog at a time. Part of a North Carolina Department of Correction program that pairs dogs desperately in need of training with inmates equally desperate to change their lives, A New Leash on Life offers a second chance to both dogs and men. There are currently 21 prisons in the state with the program, each which partners with an animal welfare organization. In Forsyth County, it’s the Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) and its no-kill adoption center. FHS provides the dogs for the program, as well as professional trainers from the Winston-Salem Dog Training Club and training materials, medical care, and substantial financial assistance. FHS staff and professional trainers evaluate and choose the dogs. We don’t allow overtly aggressive dogs, but some dogs are too difficult to adopt out, because they’re too unruly, too shy, or have a profound lack of manners. Our Lead Trainer, Pam Robbins, a professional dog trainer

(whose last project was with a service-dog train-ing program in a Virginia maximum-security prison) is able to look beyond the surface into each dog’s essence. She combines her analysis of the dogs with the current inmate-trainers’ skill levels, and what each one is ready to learn. Dogs who simply have no manners are best paired with a begin-ning or relatively new inmate. Dogs more out of control or totally shut down are better with a more experienced one. The dogs live and learn at the prison for ten weeks. Then, the dogs “graduate” from the program--crate-trained, house-trained, obedi-ence-trained, and proficient on the agility field. We sometimes have difficulties getting them adopted by graduation time, despite their impec-cable training (worth mucho moola) because people must schedule a visit to the prison to meet them. But we have their pictures on our website, and if you’re interested, you can fill out an application, go with an FHS representative to the prison to meet the dog and trainer, get some obedience tips, then make a final decision. The dogs can be adopted when the 10 weeks are up. The new owners come to the graduation ceremony, and take the dog home with them,

along with a training “journal” the inmate- trainers have kept. After graduation, the inmates are given a day to mourn the loss of their friends and to clean the Training Center, and the following day are given a new dog to train. And so it goes. Some of the dogs that have gone on to happy new lives are Brittney, formerly known as Butterbean, who was considered incorrigible and untrainable (see her picture); Chloe, an emaciated Great Dane who was unsocialized and insecure (see her picture), and Lindey, an American Bulldog we suspect was a bait dog in a dog fighting ring. She was the most trauma-tized dog most of us had ever seen, and wouldn’t come out of her crate or interact with anyone for quite a while. (See her picture!) If you’re interested in adopting a New Leash on Life dog, or in contributing to this life-changing program, please go to our website: newleashonlifefcc.org or to our facebook page, New Leash On Life at Forsyth Correctional Center. We’d also love to see you at the Forsyth Humane Society Adoption Center at 61 Miller St. in Winston-Salem. Come join us. We prom-ise you’ll never be the same.

Bob Barker. Hi! My

name is Bob Barker. I’m a

sweet two-year old who was

dumped at the shelter because my

owner thought I barked too much.

Wouldn’t you if you were left out-

side by yourself all the time with

no one to interact with? CBHR

pulled me from the shelter and

put me in a foster home with people who love me. I have food, a nice

bed of my own and a nice 4-legged foster brother to play with. With

all this love I don’t need to bark any more! I like to go outdoors and

would love to have a fenced yard again (if I wasn’t left all alone in it).

I love napping, playing with my peeps, and going for a ride in the car.

If you’re interested in adopting me or one of the other bassets at

CBHR, please contact [email protected]. n

Tiny. Hello! I’m Tiny!

I may be an older Chi but I

love people and get along

just fine with the other

foster dogs at my house. I

am spayed, UTD on shots

and on HW preventative. I

am house trained and paper

trained and my foster mom

says that I am really laid

back. I don’t really like to

be picked up but I love to

snuggle with my people. I’m not a barker either and my foster mom

says that’s a good thing.

If you think that you would like to give me a forever home, please

Merlin can’t “really” make magic

happen but he has learned a lot since

coming into BTRNC Foster Care. He

has graduated from Obedience School

and now knows the commands “sit”,

“down”, “stay”, “watch me”, “leave it”,

“come”, “off ” and “time for bed”. He

will even wait patiently to be petted

by visitors. Merlin is also house, leash and crate trained as long as

you have a treat! Merlin’s one “missing act” is that he cannot seem

to co-exist with other dogs due to lack of socialization in his younger

years. He will have to be a “solo act” in his new home. He is not at all

aggressive with children or adults but his magic “jumping bean legs”

may be too much for younger children. Merlin loves to snuggle and

would love a forever family with older children that are home a lot!

Merlin’s adoption free is $350. Call 339-4368 for more details. n

Very perplexing, as Murphee is a

nice, friendly, happy dog who gets along with every single dog in our

he is a low maintenance JRT. The family that had him didn’t have a

Apollo. Hello!! I’m Apollo!

I’m 1 year old and I’m very

In fact, there is not much that I

don’t like. I love to be outside and

I love other dogs. I don’t know

what a cat is, but I like everyone

else, I’d probably like those too. I

like the kids in Mom’s neighbor-

hood too! They love to pet me (of

course they do!!). I am (and here is the big one) potty trained!!!! I

am also crate trained, and despite all this energy I am not high strung,

its healthy energy! For snacks I dig some baby carrots and I will sit

pretty if you give me some! I also like to be styling in a sweater when

I am out and about. Last of all, I am loving, sweet and cuddly.

Sims came to GSRA around 25

pounds underweight and is thought to

be 6 years old. She knows all kinds of

commands; sit, down, shake, stay, leave

ing in or out of the house). She is well

trained, respectful, submissive to her

people, relaxed and very loving. Fetch

with the kids is a favorite, as is floppy

toys and squeaky balls. Sims is good

with other bigger dogs but not small dogs and is a little too interested

in the cat to be left alone with one. Sims is currently undergoing treat-

ment for Heartworms and has some arthritis in her two front elbows.

She takes medicine daily for the discomfort. Silly, playful and loving,

Sims is totally worth the little extra work her medical issues create.

Most people think I think too much. They’d be right, but it is a lifelong habit fed by 27 years of

being a science geek working in an environ-mental lab. Occasionally, we run across something that is not routine. Such as the new set of water quality initiatives called “storm water regula-tions” issued in the 90’s. The challenges as-sociated with the diverse array of pollutants storm water were largely new and unclear. One of the biggest problems was the bacteria levels found in our lakes and streams. While attending a water quality confer-ence in Raleigh, I heard one of the speakers talking about controlling nuisance geese populations, and what they left behind, with border collies. These super smart dogs were a natural. Evolution has spent thousands of years programming geese to avoid being eaten by fox, coyote and wolf that practice the same behavior when they hunt as herding dog’s exhibit when herding. About the same time, my family began looking for a new companion pet. We had lost a cherished furry family member in the recent past but agreed now was the time to begin thinking about another pet. In my usual way, I saw this as a logical and pragmatic way of filling multiple needs. My wife and some of my staff that worked with the Humane Society of Randolph County, simultaneously brought a dog to my attention they thought I might like. She was a three to four year old Aussie-Border Collie mix. My first thought was she was too old to train but I was courteous and kept listening. From what I was told, she originally walked into the Guilford County Animal Shelter on Wendover Avenue when she was

about the size of a football looking for food. She was adopted, and returned, multiple times and places, all with very devastating ef-fects. She was currently residing at Asheboro Animal Hospital. All of her shelter options were about used up. I agreed to meet her at an adoption fair at Creekside Park in Archdale. I was over-whelmed at her beauty and upbeat, social spirit. She was well managed and willing on a leash. When she saw me, she immediately quit paying attention to everything else and came straight to me. The problems with the geese persisted and no other solution seemed likely. So I “dis-cussed” the matter with my family, meaning I informed them of my intent to acquire the dog, and called the folks at the veterinary clinic to arrange a time to pick her up. They were wonderful about it and followed the best adoption principles that could be used like suggesting that I take “Mandi”, as she was called, for the weekend just to make sure we were a good fit. All of which I completely rejected no matter how much they pleaded. When they brought her out, I crossed my legs and sat on the floor. Just like at the park, she walked to me and promptly plopped in my lap. The deal was sealed. I could not wait. We hopped up in my truck and went straight to the location of my great experiment, and the most geese, with my new friend. From the moment I put her on the ground, I made every mistake some-one that actually knows something about controlling geese with dogs could make. But she knew exactly what to do and did it. After just one visit, the geese did not return to this location for over a week. I had found a solution and a new best friend. She gave me

every indication she thought highly of her new arrangements as well. We have now travelled all over the US to various conferences and workshops promot-ing this method of non-destructive control. It has become the standard for controlling nuisance geese in all but a few specialized situations including an endorsement from PETA. I am very proud of my “puppy” for the tremendous part she has played as a par-ticipant and an ambassador in this endeavor. I cannot imagine it being more of a success to my originally stated challenge. Shelters and rescue groups are great places to look for a new pet. Of course compatibil-ity must be considered carefully to avoid bad fit situations for you and an animal. But, like Mandi, they might be one of the most impor-tant and rewarding things to ever happen to you. When the time comes, I know I’ll never replace her but I am equally sure I’ll look at rescue and shelter adoption first knowing that if I hadn’t, I would have never been rewarded with this profound blessing in my life.

The time has almost come for your new addition to

arrive, you have everything ready: the nursery, new

clothes, and bottles. But have you thought about how

your precious dog will react to this new addition?

Most people don’t think of this right away, and for

some it may never be a problem. There are many dogs that could

care less about this huge change, and never seem to notice the arrival

of the new baby. However, this is not always the case. So to be sure

your pooch is ready for that new bundle of joy, here are a few things

to keep in mind:

1. The day the baby is born is going to be hectic and will probably

throw you and your dog off schedule. To help with this, try and find

a friend to feed or walk the dog at her normal time. This is some-

thing to keep in mind even after the baby comes home. Dogs love

having a schedule and do better knowing when they will eat and go

out. So when the new baby comes home, try your best to stick to the

normal routine with your pup. This may mean finding some people

willing to help every now and then, but the more normal your dog’s

day is, the better she will behave.

2. Bringing home a baby blanket that smells like the baby is a

great idea. Doing this each day the baby is still at the hospital will

help your dog get used to the smell of the new baby and will help

him be less overwhelmed by the new scent.

3. If you have the time and the resources to introduce other babies

or baby sounds to your pup before the new addition, do so. This will

also help make it less of a surprise to your dog when she hears your

crying baby in the middle of the night. You could also use this as a

means to teach your dog to alert you to a baby crying; giving her a

job to do instead of allowing her to have the chance to be nervous by

the strange sound.

4. You may also want to start practicing with a baby doll, paying it

a lot of extra attention to see what your dog does. When your dog gets

up to investigate, tell him to “sit,” and then allow him to see the doll

(only after he has obeyed your command). This is one way to mimic

the new behaviors that will occur when the baby comes home and

allow you to train the correct response in your dog.

5. Finally, make your baby’s nursery a dog-free space. This gives

both your baby and dog a way to be away from one another letting

everyone relax. Teaching your dog to stop at the door of the nursery

is a great thing to get started with right away.

As always remember that the more consistent you are with how

you want your dog interacting with the baby, the better he will be.

Also, a tired dog is a happy dog, which means he will be more re-

laxed even with the new baby moving in.

“I am so happy with Buddy. He is such a sweet and loving dog and everywhere I take him, people always notice about how well

behaved he is. That brings me such pride and happiness. The training you provided us, (mostly me) has been a true gift because I can take him everywhere with me and I do and that has resulted in a bond far beyond what I imagined in the beginning.”Adam, Cesar Millan, (The Dog Whisperer)
