    Jets Pizza opens onMonday

BIG RAPIDS Dough will be mixed, vegetables cut and sauce made thisweekend as Jets Pizza prepares to launchits downtown Big Rapids location Monday.

Jets Pizza is opening nearly one year tothe date after the fire that closed the formerPapa Johns. A fire started about 12:30 a.m.on Sept. 15, 2010, after employees hadleft for the night. No one was injured in thelaze.

apa Johns decided not to reopen thestore, located at 215 Maple St., after thefire. Papa Johns had been in the downtownlocation since 2001.

Dennis Schafer signed a five-year lease thissummer to open a Jets restaurant, with anadditional five-year extension option.

The interior of the building was completelyredone. Fire-damaged materials wereremoved and replaced with white, greenand red tile floors and walls to match theets motif.

triple-deck pizza oven was installed andbout 15 employees hired to keep up with

the all orders the restaurant expects, saidmanager Molly Michalik.

Since were right downtown, were hopingto attract people from downtown businessesor lunch, Michalik said. Not only do weave pizza, we also offer salads, subs, hicken wings and more.

In addition to take-out orders, customersill be able to enjoy a meal inside the

estaurant, which can fit about one dozeniners. Customers also will be able to ordernline at www.jetspizza.com.

he chain pizza restaurant was slatedo open before the start of Ferris Stateniversitys fall semester, but was pushedack several weeks due to constructionelays. Work on the restaurant began inarly July.

Youre always going to run into some snagsuring construction, Michalik said. We hadome issues with getting our ovens. We

also had to get someone in to work on the

electrical, get our Internet up and running, our alarm system installed and a few otherthings that didnt allow us to open up beforethe school year started.

lthough the restaurant is opening laterhan expected, Michalik said communityembers are excited to try its signature

    quare-shaped pizza.

Our phones have been ringing like crazynd people are constantly coming in to askhen were opening, Michalik said. Wereopular down state, so were hoping to bringur square pizza up here to let everyonenow what were all about.

Avoid the Night Terrors ofShift Work Disorder

(NewsUSA) - Do you work the graveyardshift? If you do, your health may becompromised. Over 15 million Americanswork a job with late-night or early-morningours, which leaves workers vulnerable tohift work disorder (SWD). SWD is hardo diagnose and treat, but the associatedleep deprivation and insomnia can beebilitating.

recent study published in the Journal ofmerican Physiology by researchers from

he University of Toronto discovered anothererious health risk posed by SWD -- a higherisk for organ disease. With the side effects

f SWD only expanding, workers must findways to manage the bodily stress.

Shift work disrupts the bodys natural

sleep-wake cycle, called circadian rhythm, which affects other critical factors like bodytemperature and the way organs function.

We knew that circadian rhythm disruption

had been linked with reduced longevity,so we decided to try and find out where, why and how longevity is compromised, explains psychology professor Martin Ralphfrom the University of Toronto, one of thelead researchers from the study on shiftwork.

Shift work is the opposite of 9-5, and demandfor it is only increasing as customers expectmore 24-hour services. Many occupationsrequire permanent or occasional shiftwork, such as healthcare professionals, hospitality and restaurant staff, productionand manufacturing workers, protective andemergency services and the transportationindustry.

These workers suffer from the continualdisturbance of their biological or circadianclocks. As the new study supports, long-term interference of this nature can lead tokidney or heart disease.

People suffering with SWD can also haveObstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It is acondition marked by loud snoring, pausesin breathing and gasping. The repeatedarousals contribute to the disruption ofsleep. Like SWD, it can contribute toexcessive daytime sleepiness, diabetesand heart disease. Unlike SWD, it is easy todiagnose and effectively treat.

Another tip is to create an ideal sleepenvironment -- eliminate extra noise and

light to get the most out of your irregularsleep schedule. Try and stick to the samesleep and wake time, even on weekends.Dont hesitate to seek medical help.

To find more information and advice on sleepdisorders, go to www.sleepapnea.org.

    Innovation Reigns WhenTimes Get Tough

(NewsUSA) - When people see closedstorefronts in the neighborhoods wherethey live and work, theyre reminded that thetoll this economy has taken on businessesaffects their own lives. And yet somecompanies -- faced with the same adverse

headwinds -- seem to rise to the challengeand go on to prosper as never before.

Why is that? And could there even be alesson to be learned here if youre thinkingof starting your own business as a result ofeither being unemployed or just plain fed upwith your current job?

The i-word keeps popping up amongexperts as the answer to that question. Thewhole engine that drives any economy isinnovation, says Stephen Gnass, executivedirector of the National Congress of InventorOrganizations, a non-profit for inventors andinventor groups.

Take IBM, for example. It practically

reinvented itself years ago -- going froma stodgy seller of large, pricey computersto a global software and consulting giant-- and just recently celebrated its 100thanniversary. And then theres the moreunder-the-radar case of New Jersey-basedGAF.

North Americas largest roofing andventilation manufacturer is celebrating itsown anniversary this year -- 25 years longerin business than IBM, but whos counting?-- and one way it got there is by coming upwith unique answers to consumers andbusinesses desires to go green. In fact, itmade quite a splash last summer when itteamed up with New York Citys Departmentof Buildings to paint 1 million square feet of

roofs white -- GAF supplied the reflectivepaint for one of the many projects of theinitiative, as well as materials and labor -- as

a way of cutting the citys energy costs.

To GAFs CEO, Bob Tafaro, that kind ofnimbleness is key. When you put customersfirst by ensuring that they get quality

products and service, and when you keepyour employees focused on innovation, youve got the formula for surviving longterm and throughout even the toughesteconomic times.

The companys commitment to serviceand innovation has actually produced anumber of firsts, including: the first ready-to-lay asphalt roofing, the first to use colorgranules in roofing materials, and the firstto offer a lifetime shingle warranty. And,oh yes, for those concerned about theoutsourcing of American jobs, everythingsmade in America. For more information, visit www.GAF.com.

A Bright Spot for YourRainy-Day Savings

(NewsUSA) - Ben Franklin once declared,A penny saved is a penny earned. Yet,equally enlightening are his thoughts onexpenses: Beware of little expenses. Asmall leak will sink a great ship.

And there are plenty of leaks that canscuttle an already-tight budget. For instance,a spouse idled by the sour economy, afender bender with the family car, or anunexpected hospitalization. Thats whyfinancial advisors recommend that youhave a rainy-day fund -- enough liquidassets to cover three to six months worthof emergency living expenses. In case of

financial emergency, access to additionalmoney will save you from relying on creditcards or loans that simply compound theproblem.

When starting an emergency fund, there area few key points to take into consideration:

    1. Determine what amount is best for you. Most experts agree that you should keepbetween three and six months worth of yourliving expenses set aside in your emergencyfund. Your specific situation -- whether youhave children, carry substantial debt andtypes of insurance coverage you have-- will determine what amount is best foryou. Examine your situation -- your incomeand your needs -- to decide how much you

    should save.

    2. Start small. Starting an emergencyfund can be as simple as depositing $100into your high-interest savings account. But before you begin, be sure that youremeeting your basic living expenses. Andas you build your emergency fund, be sureyoure also reducing your spending andavoiding debt.

    3. Stick to a schedule. Get into the habitof making regular deposits. Whether itis weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, create aschedule and stick to it. Once you makesaving automatic, you wont even have tothink about it.

    4. Consider an online savings account. Inmany cases, an online savings accountmay make more sense than an accountat a traditional, bricks-and-mortar bank.Thats because many traditional banks arenot currently offering a savings option withinterest rates high enough to meaningfullybeat inflation. In addition, an online savingsaccount is a reliable way to manage yourmoney.

AAA and Discover Bank partnered to bringmembers highly competitive rates on anonline savings account. The AAA OnlineSavings Account is a great option to beginbuilding a rainy-day fund:

    * Preferred member rates over five times

    the national savings average

    * $500 minimum opening deposit and no

    minimum balance required

    * FDIC insurance up to $250,000

To open your Online Savings Account, visit

    AAA.com/Deposits.

    Balancing Higher Educationas an Adult

(NewsUSA) - Parents and even grandparentare now doing homework alongside theichildren. According to the National Centefor Education Statistics (NCES), higheeducation enrollment of students age 25 andolder rose 43 percent between 2000 and2009. From 2010 to 2019, NCES projecta 23 percent rise in college enrollments ostudents age 25 and older.

Many adults are striving to find the balancebetween work, family and education;others feel they are too overwhelmed bresponsibilities to even consider pursuing ahigher degree.

However, options do exist. Online educationis a great solution for working adults seekingan advanced degree. Online programenable working adults to accommodatetheir busy schedules. However, despitethe schedule flexibility that online learningoffers, adult students still must prioritizetheir responsibilities and commitments inorder to complete assignments on time.

Parents arent the only ones who need tounderstand that going back to school is atime-consuming process -- everyone in thefamily should understand the commitment

as well, says Savitri Dixon-Saxon, Ph.D.,LPC, NCC, associate dean of WaldenUniversitys School of Counseling andSocial Service. Walden University offermore than 60 online doctoral, masters andbachelors degree programs.

Here are five tips from Dr. Dixon-Saxon foachieving balance:

    * Choose a focus or specialization thatyou truly care about. The juggling act will bemuch more challenging for you if you dontenjoy your field of study. Choose a focuarea you are passionate about.

    * Set aside time for your studies. Setspecific time frames for studying and

completing assignments. This requirediscipline and time management, but onceyou establish a routine, it can help keep youon track.

    * Find a place to do your studies. Iteasy to be distracted, so find a quiet placeto study away from excessive noise andinterruptions.

    * Ask for help. Make connections early onwith classmates and faculty members to setup online study groups and start the term ofright.

    * Renew your energy. Take time foyourself as part of your schedule. Spendtime with your family and friends to recharge

    your batteries.

    Refreshing CommunitiesThrough Outdoor Gardens

(NewsUSA) - Whether you live in anurban or rural area, enjoying the outdooris something many Americans have incommon, and we experience it in differentways -- both big and small -- from growingherbs on the back porch to perusing thecommunity farmers market in town.

But why not take it a step further andtake action to make your community alittle greener? Creating an outdoor oasihelps preserve green space, beautifie

neighborhoods, and can also bring togetherthe community through a shared cause.

One way to do this is through The PepsiRefresh Project, which through the inputof people across the country, awardsgrants to projects, for both individualsand organizations, that do good for thecommunity. This month Pepsi is challenging

merica, asking How can you upgradeyour hometown with a new communitygarden? Go to www.refresheverything.comand give Pepsi your best answer, or clickthrough the hundreds of other entries tovote on your favorite ideas to help ensureworthy organizations receive the fundingthey deserve. Since last year, Americanshave chosen to award more than 20 milliondollars to community-supportive ideasthat receive the greatest number of votesthrough this landmark fundraising effort.

Take Central Elementary Gardens forexample, started by teacher ChristyCuthbert, who used the $25,000 PepsiRefresh Project grant to create an outdoorlearning center and garden for her school.

Students not only get their hands dirty inthe garden, but also learn skills to promoteand manage a community farmers market.Theres also the Brigits Bounty started by aColorado resident, Brandi-Lynn Greig. Sheused her $25,000 grant to provide fencing, seeds, trees, and educational programmingfor a community garden, which providesfresh vegetables to over 200 families inneed each month.

Other ways to get involved are to join analready established community gardenor farm in your area. From planting tomanaging sales, there are several ways youcan contribute.

Every action helps to create major impacton communities, whether you choose to

vote for your favorite idea or put your ownidea into action. Even as the summer daysstart to shorten and we head back to school,Pepsi will continue to challenge Americanswith the next question, asking, How wouldyou make learning fun? No matter theseason, ideas can always inspire change incommunities and the Pepsi Refresh Projectencourages just that.

    Keep Real Cooties at Bay

(NewsUSA) - The infectious disease knownto children as cooties may not really exist, but the idea of advancing germs jumpingfrom classmate to classmate isnt very faroff.

Despite all efforts to the contrary, schoolstend to be a receptacle for all kinds of badbacteria and germs. Most harmful bacteriaare absorbed through the mouth, which canlead to ear infections, sore throats, colds, even gum disease.

Kids will be kids, and sometimes itsimpossible to stop them from shoving every

little object into their mouths -- which iswhy germ-related illness, like cooties, canspread quickly.

While chants of circle circle, dot dot, nowyou have your cootie shot wont do muchto prevent germs in schools, a real solutionhas arrived from New Zealand.

Researchers at BLIS Technologies andOtago University in New Zealand recentlydiscovered a new type of probiotic that, inearly clinical trials, can help keep cootiesaway. Unlike current probiotics on grocerystore shelves meant for digestion, thisprobiotic is for the mouth. There, beneficialprobiotic bacteria can help defend kids andadults from germs that cause a variety ofunpleasant conditions -- sore throats, ear

    aches, persistent sniffles and more.

In the U.S. this new probiotic is now beingintroduced at

Walgreens stores under the TheraBreathlabel. TheraBreath Multi Symptom Oral CareProbiotics is the first product that effectivelytargets hostile bacteria in the oral cavity andthroat, where the majority of illness-causinggerms enter the body.

The probiotic also protects teeth frombacterial cavities and tooth decay as itreduces plaque and biofilm. The patentedstrain has been shown to break up thenatural glue that allows these substances tostick to tooth and gum tissue. As biofilm isremoved, teeth even regain a natural whiterluster. TheraBreath improves overall gumhealth and strengthens germ resistance. For more info about oral care, visit www.therabreath.com/probiotics.

(NewsUSA) - Mans best friend providesmore than mere companionship. Dogsencourage humans to exercise daily --come rain or shine.

The need to take a daily walk provides dogowners with a great form of exercise, saidLeila Mureebe, a member of the Societyfor Vascular Surgery. Exercise is good forthe bodys blood supply, for maintainingproper body weight and for controlling bloodpressure.

For persons with high blood pressure -- andthats one in three Americans over age 20,according to a 2010 Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention report -- Fidoscalming effect can be a life saver.

High blood pressure and stress contributto the fourth leading cause of death i

America: stroke. The National Vital StatisticReport indicated that 137,000 Americandied of stroke in 2010. The American Strok

Association estimated that Americans spen$73.7 billion for stroke-related medical costand disability in 2010.

Every 40 seconds, an American suffersstroke, said Dr. Mureebe. Strokes occusuddenly and without warning. Two milliobrain cells die every minute during a strokeEighty percent of strokes are preventablthrough risk factor management.

Thirty minutes of daily exercise, nosmoking, and proper nutrition are includein risk factor management. A United State

National Institutes of Health-funded studof 2,000 adults discovered that personwho regularly walked their dogs were morphysically active and less likely to be obesthan non-dog walkers.

Ive seen improvements in high bloopressure, high cholesterol, and diabetewhen patients enter into a routine of dailexercise, not smoking, and healthy eating, said Dr. Mureebe. A brisk 30-minute walwith your dog is good for both of you.
