Power of water safetyThe Big Rapids Jaycees promote

importance of learning to swimduring River Safety Week

By Jonathan EppleyPioneer Staff Writer

IG RAPIDS — Wading along theanks of the Muskegon River or njoying an afternoon float down theapids are fun ways to relax with familynd friends in the summer.

he Big Rapids Jaycees want to makeure the people who enjoy the river lso “Respect the Power” of the Mightyuskegon.ince taking over the Muskegoniver Water Safety Project last year,

he Jaycees have introduced theommunity to its new mascot, “Sammyhe Salmon,” to help promote river afety, and have installed a seventhmergency tower along the Riverwalk.ith plans to create a website about

iver safety and install another mergency tower along Phase III of theiverwalk south of Hemlock Park thisummer, the nonprofit organization is

showing no signs of slowing down.“Our future focus is going to be river safety education and really getting

the word out there,” said Jaycee Tyler Schuberg. “One of the smartest thingsyou can do is have some kind of floatation device when playing in theriver. You can be the strongest swimmer

in the world, but if you get caught inan undertow and pulled under, youmay not know which way is up. Withthe (Muskegon) River, knowing howto swim is half the battle. Having theproper safety devices, and knowinghow to use them, is the other part.”To further encourage safe swimmingand teach children to “Respect thePower” of the Muskegon River, Sammythe Salmon and the Jaycees will makeseveral appearances starting Mondayduring River Safety Week. The week kicks off at the CharlesE. Fairman Community Pool, whereJaycees will talk to lesson swimmers

from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Monday aboutthe importance of learning how to swim.Sammy and the Jaycees will visit theBig Rapids Middle School from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday to pass outtemporary river safety tattoos, as wellas promote river safety.River Safety Week will conclude duringThe Whitfords performance from noonto 1 p.m. on Friday at Pocket Park.Jaycee Matt Yeoman will be on site toshoot and print photographs of childrenwith Sammy the Salmon at no cost.In hopes of creating water safetyawareness among a younger demographic, the Jaycees will be

hosting a coloring contest for childrenages 5 and younger, ages 6 to 10,and 11 and up. An entry form will beincluded in an upcoming edition of thePioneer. Prizes will be awarded for thetop three entries in each age group.Creating that awareness among ayounger crowd is one of the missionsof the organization, said Jaycee ErinDiehm.“It’s the most important thing for achild to know how to swim. If theyunderstand the basics, they’re muchbetter off,” Diehm said. “If they are inthe river and can do those basic things, then they can go out there, not bescared and feel a little less intimidated.”

In a Daily Slump? Tips to MakeSure You Get a Good Night’s

Sleep

(NewsUSA) - Do you find yourself

fatigued and yawning throughout theday? A mid-afternoon slump could reallybe trying to tell you something -- it’slikely you aren’t getting enough sleep!

The average adult needs seven tonine hours of sleep per day to functionproperly. However, in a 2005 healthsurvey, 30 percent of adults nationwidereported getting only about six hoursof sleep per day. For many adults, fatigue seems inevitable. In a 2002study conducted by the National SleepFoundation, 37 percent of adultsreported being so sleepy during theday that it interfered with their daily

activities. Much of that lost sleep can beattributed to background noises.

“Background noise is a problem for people when they are sleeping,” saidDr. Rafael Pelayo, associate professor at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinicat Stanford University School of Medicine.

A study by Consumer Reports foundthat sound machines are nearlyas effective as prescription sleepmedications, and more effective thanover-the-counter sleep medicationsor aids, without the side-effects. Dr.

Pelayo recommends the Sound+Sleep Adaptive Sound Therapy Machine(www.soundofsleep.com) as part of

a healthy sleep plan for people tryingto achieve a better night’s sleep withminimal use of drugs.

“There are a lot of ‘dumb’ sound

machines out there that just playconstant noise in an attempt to cover up these disruptions,” says Dr. Pelayo.“The new Sound+Sleep responds tosudden background disturbances byadjusting its sound output to better mask the noise. For some people, theimproved sound masking seems to helpthem sleep better.”

Other tips for better nighttime sleepinclude:

* Set a regular bed time and stick to it.

* Eliminate caffeine before bed.

* Sleep without the lights or TV on.

* Get plenty of exercise during theday.

Visit www.soundofsleep.com for moreinformation about how you can get abetter night’s sleep

Understanding Your Pet’sImmune System

(NewsUSA) - In my practice, I’vealways used probiotics in general -;as animals need probiotics just like

humans. Adding beneficial bacteriato a pet’s diet helps the digestivesystem combat intestinal parasites andimproves digestive function.

The gastrointestinal tract is such animportant foundation to pets’ immunesystems because the gut is an entrypoint for pathogens. If you’re usingprobiotics, the immune system issupported and strengthened to fightinfection quickly and aggressively.Probiotics also help stop the immunesystem from over-reacting and creatinginflammation.

One common issue for pets is ear infection. I’ve observed that whether we used conventional or alternativetreatments, adding a probiotic productfor immune system support shortensthe length and reduces the severityof the infection. I usually see a better outcome by adding Del-Immune V(www.delimmune.com) to treatment, and generally don’t need to doadditional treatments, as is commonwith ear infections.

Another common issue with pets isskin problems, including mange. Ihave found that skin problems improve

quickly with a probiotic product, likeDel-Immune V. I use it for immunesystem support with all types of mange, including the problematicdemodectic mange. Some animalshave genetically inherited immuneweaknesses that allow mange-inducingmites to overgrow. Dogs can inherit themites from their parents. You will knowthe mites are out of control if mangebecomes a problem.

Probiotics help immensely bysupporting the immune system inmounting an appropriate response tothe mange mites. Traditional treatmentsfor mange can include strong antibioticsand dips in toxic medicines. But manydogs, if provided a good diet and Del-Immune V, can get over i t on their own

What Makes a Successful DietPlan?

(NewsUSA) - A low-calorie dietonsisting solely of grapefruit, cabbageoup or weight-loss milkshakes willost likely cause you to lose weight, if

trictly followed. But is it healthy? Not ahance.

lmost any diet plan will work for ahile, yet up to 95 percent of dietersho lose weight fail to keep that weightff after just one year. According to Dr.ike Moreno, author of the NY Times

estselling book “The 17 Day Diet,” thewo biggest obstacles that cause dietso fail are boredom and plateau. That’secause most mainstream diets are tooomplex or restrictive, making it nearly

mpossible to stick with them for a longeriod of time.

Instead, Moreno emphasizes thateight loss that results in even themallest changes in body compositionan pay off with life-changing benefits.e encourages participants to measure

heir success, not just in pounds, butlso by looking at the overall healthenefits to include cholesterol, healthier

blood sugar readings, and improvedblood pressure.

As the founding physician behindBistroMD, the provider of the meal planfor “The 17 Day Diet,” Dr. Caroline J.Cederquist, a bariatric physician andfamily practice physician, agrees thateven something as small as a 5 percentdecrease in weight loss is significantwith regards to lowering the health risksassociated with being overweight.

“In my medical practice, diabetic andoverweight patients who achieve 5percent weight loss often have lower blood sugar readings and also haveimprovements in their blood pressure,”says Dr. Cederquist.

Moreno’s “The 17 Day Diet” helpsyou lose weight with a cycled eatingplan that alters the amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and fatsyou eat every few days. “We call itmetabolic, or body, confusion,” Morenoexplains. Divided across four phases,

each is designed to accomplish adifferent objective: burning fat, resettingthe metabolism and teaching youproper portion control and hunger signs.

If you want to try The 17 Day Diet butdon’t want to cook, you can bring themeals from the popular book to your table by ordering The 17 Day DietMeal Plan by BistroMD. For moreinformation, visit www.The17DayDiet.com or call: (800) 464-1384.

(NewsUSA) - An engagement ringsymbolizes your promise to love andcherish your partner forever, and showsthe world your commitment to your fiancée. Many women dream abouttheir engagement ring their entire lives,so choosing the right style is of utmostimportance.

Here are some tips to ease thepressure of finding the ring andproposing:

It’s Not Only About the Diamond

A ring’s setting is as important asits diamond because the setting iswhat displays and secures the stone.Platinum provides an ideal setting as itis stronger than other precious metals, which means that you don’t have toworry about losing the center stonewith everyday wear. Also, platinum isa naturally white metal, allowing the

diamond to sparkle even brighter.

Did you know that a platinumengagement ring will last forever?Since platinum is so durable andloses little metal over time, the ringwill undoubtedly become a familyheirloom that can be passed down for generations to follow. And platinumengagement rings are surprisinglyaffordable. Contrary to popular belief, they are available in a wide range of price points, starting at around $1,000at BlueNile.com.

Know Her Style

Before you go to the jewelry store,

know your future fianceé’s style, personality and lifestyle since there is aring to suit her perfectly. For example,a woman with a hands-on job, likenursing, might prefer a simple bandwith a secure setting, while a womanwho has a less active job might wantsomething more intricate. A woman withclassic style will want a different banddesign than a trend-setting fashionista.

“A classic polished platinum band fromMichael Barin will suit a girl with moretraditional tastes, while a birth stone of colored diamonds on an embellishedband like one from Suna Bros. will lookbold and unique,” says jewelry andstyle expert Michael O’Connor. “Tofigure out her ring size, press one of your girlfriend’s rings in a bar of soapuntil it leaves a mark. You can also putone of her rings on your own hand, mark where it falls on your finger andhave the jeweler measure that area,”

suggests O’Connor.

How to Propose

Some women want a public proposalin front of friends and family, whileothers want something private andspecial. In either case, your fiancéewill remember the day for the rest of her life. Think about what your fiancéelikes, and where and how you met.For more tips on proposing marriageor choosing an engagement ring, visitwww.engagementguide.com or www.preciousplatinum.com.
