    Morels draw mushroom fansto Michigan

    LANSING Morels are popping

up, attracting tourists who taste, hunt and participate in mushroomfestivals.

Morels grow in various areas buttheyre most plentiful in NorthernMichigan, said Phil Tedeschi,

resident of the MichiganMushroom Hunters Club in

    outheast Michigan.

They are found in the spring, hich is the major huntingeason, and everyone gets

nvolved, Tedeschi said.Restaurants offer recipes, ommunities plan festivals and itsgreat way to show off the states

    ocally grown food.

ccording to Tedeschi, manyeople come to Michigan to hunt

or the mushroom because ofts unique taste and ability toe combined in many preparedishes.

It has a distinct, delicate flavornd is a very easy mushroomo identify, Tedeschi said. Theolors of the mushroom changehroughout the season. They arelack and gray the majority of the

ime, but turn into yellow towardhe end.

he mushrooms grow better inamp, wooded areas. Safety isn important issue when hunting,nd the morels pose less riskince its easy to identify and there

re fewer species in the spring, edeschi said.

During the festivals, people huntorels, and there is an award forhoever finds the most. Local

estaurants set up stands to teacheople new dishes that include

he mushroom, Tedeschi said.Festivals also boost tourism in thetate.

We have about 150 membersn our club and also see a large

mount of Indiana and Ohioesidents at the hunts, Tedeschiaid. All these people travelingtay at hotels during the huntingeason.

Morels tend to grow in maplend aspen-filled woodlands and,

n good, moist growing years, round elm trees and abandoned

ruit orchards, said Jerry Lindquist, regional Michigan State

University Extension educatorased in Osceola County.

    he mushroom season runs

through May, with black morelsgrowing first, usually a few inchestall. White morels, on the otherhand, typically come in late May,

and are capable of growing asmuch as a foot high.

While, mushroom-related tourismisnt as abundant locally as it maybe farther north, theres still afollowing of tourists that pick themin Mecosta and Osceola counties.

Typically festivals keep theirattention on morels, which aresafe to eat. But because othertypes can be poisonous, Lindquistwarned amateur mushroomhunters to know what theyreplucking and eating before doingso.

Go with someone who isexperienced or get some goodreference materials, he said.

And even if youre sure themushroom is safe, its a good ideato consume only a little bit the firsttime.

Some have allergies or reactionsto mushrooms that are veryindividual to the person, headded. Not everybody reacts thesame to mushrooms, even thesafe ones.

The 51st annual Boyne City MorelMushroom Festival will take placeMay 13 through 15, accordingto Peter Fitzsimons, executivedirector of the Petoskey AreaVisitors Bureau.

Hundreds attend the festival toexperience the different activitiesinvolving morels, Fitzsimons said.

According to Fitzsimons, the eventincludes the Boyne Valley LionsNational Morel Mushroom Huntand the Taste of Morels, wherepeople search for mushrooms andlearn recipes.

People hunt in public land in thearea, like Chandler Hills, and arerewarded for how many they find,

Fitzsimons said. This season iscertainly helping the economybecause the festivals and huntsare getting bigger every year byoffering tasting tests, music andcooking ideas. It is really helpinglocal restaurants sell food andalso hotels book rooms.

Mike Norton, media relationsofficer of the Traverse CityConvention and Visitors Bureau, said the Traverse City area also isknown for its morels.

    The area has many wooded

slopes for hunting, and residentsrefer to the fungi as the truffle ofthe North, Norton said. Theycreate new dishes and feature

the tasty fungi in them. Some alsofeature wine from vineyards in OldMission and Leelanau peninsulasthat pair well with the mushroom.

Theres also an annual MesickMushroom Festival scheduled forthe area.

It has been going on for 52 yearsand is a three-day event May 6through 8 to celebrate the morelbloom, Norton said.

Sandy Sheine, of the MichiganMushroom Hunters Club, said theclub does more hunts than anyother club and it has membersfrom Michigan and out-of-state.

People have been hunting thesefor years, and with the worldbecoming more environmentallyconscious now, more people wantto get involved in fresh food,Sheine said. Especially now, younger people are interested in

locally grown food, and we seethem at more and more of thesetypes of activities.

Hybrid Cars: The PerformanceCars of the Future

(NewsUSA) - When most peoplethink of hybrid cars, they imaginepractical, mild-mannered vehicles. But could we someday see hybridracecars burning up the tracks?

In March of 2010, Porsche (www.

porsche.com/usa/) unveiledthree hybrids at the Geneva AutoShow: one for the road; one forthe race track; and one that is agenuine Porsche supercar. Theseinnovative new Porsches -- theCayenne S Hybrid, the 911 GT3R Hybrid and the 918 Spyder --show that hybrids can be sporty, fast and powerful.

The Cayenne S, Porsches firstproduction hybrid car, featuresa sophisticated parallel full

hybrid system with the combinedpower of a 380 horsepowerV6 combustion engine and anelectric motor. The car has thepotential to significantly enhancefuel economy at high speeds-- when the driver lifts off theaccelerator at cruising or highwayspeeds, the gasoline engine canbe switched off and disengagedfrom the drivetrain. This enablesthe vehicle to move withoutcombustion or electric power.

The GT3 Rs innovative hybridtechnology has been developed

especially for racing. The frontaxle features two powerful electricmotors that supplement thecars 480 horsepower, naturally

aspirated four-liter flat-six thatdrives the rear wheels. Insteadof the heavy batteries found inhybrid road cars, an electricalflywheel power generator residesnext to the driver to deliver energyto the electric motors. The 911GT3 R Hybrid competed in the24 Hours on the Nordschleife ofNrburgring in May 2010, leadingfor eight hours before retiringafter 22 hours and 15 minutes formechanical reasons. In the 2010Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta itfinished 18th out of a starting fieldof 41 cars.

With the 918 Spyder high-performance mid-engine concepthybrid sports car, Porsche isdisplaying its expertise in thefield of highly efficient and low-emission drive technology. The918 Spyder prototype with plug-in hybrid technology combineshigh-tech performance featureswith electric mobility to produce

a fascinating range of qualities. It has an ultra-compact carsemission levels of 70 gramsof CO2 per kilometer, and itconsumes just three liters of fuelper 100 kilometers, but can gofrom 0 to 62 mph in just under 3.2seconds and reach a top trackspeed over 198 mph.

    Pest-Proof Your Home AgainstSummertime Critters

(NewsUSA) - In the heat of

summer, unwanted pests aremaking their way into coolerhomes, and they are more thanjust a nuisance. Pests pose risksto peoples health and property, soit is important for homeowners totake steps to prevent infestations. There are many ways in whichhomeowners can pest-proof theihomes as part of their summer-maintenance rout ine. Takingpreventive measures early in theseason is the best approach tokeeping pests at bay.

As the warmer weather bringsback numerous pests, earlysummer is the perfect time forhomeowners to thoroughlyinspect their homes as part ofseasonal maintenance, saysMissy Henriksen, vice president ofpublic affairs for the National PestManagement Association (NPMA).

Various insects such as ants, flies, termites and cockroaches arefrequent summer home intruders,

as are those of the stinging varietysuch as mosquitoes, wasps, bees

    and yellowjackets.

The NPMA recommends anumber of methods to keephousehold pests outside, where

    they belong.

    * Seal cracks and small openingsin the homes foundation, around

    indows and doors.

    Repair ripped window screens.

Cut tree branches and plantso that they do not reach too closeo the house.

Eliminate sources of moisturer standing water, including birdaths and in clogged gutters.

Inspect the outside of a homeor nests built by stinging insects- typically found in the eavesnder roofs.

Keep kitchen counters clean,nd store food like sugary cereals

    n sealed containers.

Empty garbage containersrequently and seal indoorontainers.

    Make sure pets food and

ishes are not left out for long

    periods of time.

Clearing away all things thatattract critters is one of the bestways to pest-proof a house

because it denies pests themeans of thriving in and aroundyour home.

If you find any signs of aninfestation after a thoroughinspection of your home, youshould call a pest professionalwho can help identify and treat theproblem.

    Cyberbullying and Your Teen

(NewsUSA) - According to theNational Council of JuvenileCourt Judges, each year nearly3.2 million students are victims ofonline bullying, a serious Internetsafety concern. To address theseissues, Boys & Girls Clubs of

America has partnered withSprint to promote online safetyresources for teens and parents.

Sprints 4NetSafety programaims to open the lines ofcommunication about Internet

    safety between young people

and the adults who care for them. The online resource offers freetools from experts that addressthe perils that young peoplecommonly encounter online and

    encourage positive dialogue aboutInternet safety.

Sprint is pleased to be enteringinto this partnership with Boys& Girls Clubs of America, saidDebby Ballard, Sprints directorof community affairs. Internetsafety is an area that is veryimportant to Sprint, as evidencedby our 4NetSafety program, andour partnership with BGCA allowsus to add to and raise additionalawareness about these valuableresources.

A recent survey of young peoplerevealed some startling statisticsabout how parents are supervisingtheir childrens online time. Morethan 53 percent say their parentsnever ask them about whom theyare talking to on the Internet, andover half say their parents neversurf the Internet with them.

The Internet can be a wonderfulresource, but it has always beenour goal to teach our youth howto navigate the Web safely and

    appropriately, said Dan Rauzi,

senior director of technologyservices and programs at BGCA.Sprint and BGCA teamed up toraise awareness about a primeconcern of ours -- the importance

of a healthy and safe virtual life forAmericas youth.

Sprint and Boys & Girls Clubs ofAmerica offers the following tipsto parents to help keep their teenssafer online.

    1. Remind your teen that whatthey post stays online forever.

    2. Ask to see their profile page.

    3. Tell your chid to only addfriends they know in real life.

    4. Have them use a nicknamethat doesnt identify their location, gender or age.

    5. Tell them not to post plans orwhereabouts on a site or page.

    6. If your or someone elseschild is harassed or bulliedonline, report it to your local law-enforcement agency or call theCyberTipline at 800-843-5678.
