FORMER BIG RAPIDS MAN TO
RUN IN BOSTON
LEBANON, Kent. — CharleyEmmons admits he needs a carrotdangled in front of him when itcomes to running. While he enjoys running, therehas to be a purpose. That is howEmmons motivate himself to run amarathon. Now, he is using time to motivateshimself as he prepares for the 2011Boston Marathon, which takes placeMonday.“Just to go out and run and not havea goal, it is hard to get out the door,”Emmons said. “I need something to
work toward.”Emmons used to race motorcyclesas a way to stay in shape when helived in Big Rapids. But when hemoved to southeast Michigan, hesold his motorcycles and neededsomething to stay in shape.Enter running.“I just don’t like the feeling of beingout of shape,” he said. With his wife’s encouragement,Emmons ran a 5K. After getting thetaste of racing, he quickly increasedthe length of those races, goingto a 10K which was followed by a
half-marathon, even after moving toLebanon, Kent. The next step was the full marathon,26.2 miles of mental and physicalendurance that Emmons enjoys.“I’ve heard and read about runners’high,” he said. “I don’t know if that’swhat I experience, but I feel greatwhen I get done.”Emmons researched differentmarathons and picked Columbus(Ohio) based on the flatness of thecourse. He also knew that to run theBoston Marathon, a runner had tomeet a qualifying standard based
on age.So Emmons set the bar — to break3:45 for the 55 to 60 age division —and qualify for Boston.“I wanted to break the standardand qualify, but I never thoughtabout actually running in Boston,”Emmons said.Emmons reached the qualifyingstandard, completing the race in3:27. That time is good for twoyears and Emmons, who ranColumbus in 2009, was hoping hiscousin, Andy Snyder, would alsoualify so they could run together.
However, Snyder didn’t break thetandard.hrough the encouragement of
riend Rex Schuberg, Emmons willun Boston with the goal of breaking:20. Emmons has been trainingve days a week which includes one
ong run and one day of speed worko go along with three easy runs.In total, Emmons figures he runsbout 50 miles a week.
Emmons and Schuberg are to meetaturday and Emmons hopes to
ake a brief tour of the course to getn idea of what he is up against.
Emmons also has seen video of theourse.
The biggest challenge could comeat mile 20, with Heartbreak Hill, agradual half-mile climb that testsa runner’s physical and mental
capacities. That is where runningin the hills of Kentucky could provebeneficial.“There are a lot of hills in centralKentucky and I have done a lot of training on them, so I think I will beready,” Emmons said.Emmons has already started to sethis sights other events — such asultraraces, a distance that goesfrom 30 miles or longer.“I need something to work towardand I’m really thinking about doingultraraces,” he said.

NEW IPAD? DON’T FORGET
THE APPS
(NewsUSA) - In terms of technology, Apple’s iPad is thisyear’s gadget of choice. If you’replanning to purchase, or receive,an iPad this year, you’ll first wantsome applications (apps). Beforewarned, this can get addictive, and expensive.
Here are suggestions to get your initial fix -- enough to show-off without draining your bank account
just yet. All are downloadable fromthe iTunes App Store.
* Food. The beauty of the iPad isthat it can go anywhere with you, like the kitchen, and has a large-enough screen to make readingeasier, even with flour on your hands.
For the wannabe Julia Child,
consider Epicurious, a free appfrom Condé Nast, the publisher of Bon Appétit and Gourmet. It offerscolorful photos, a shopping listfunction and the ability to search bymain ingredient, cuisine and dietaryrestriction.
Martha Stewart has her ownapplication, by the way.
* Music. Set a mood with Pandora,a free Internet radio app that allowsyou to search by a particular artist, song or composer. When you do, itwill build an entire station populatedwith songs and artists that match.
You can also choose the genre of music from Bluegrass and Doo-Wopto Lullabye. The application displays
and plays the occasional ad, so anad-free experience will cost $36 per year.
* TV/Movies. If you love Netflixalready for catching up on moviesand seasons of your favoritetelevision shows, the company hasa free iPad app. To use it, you willneed an unlimited membership, starting at $8.99 per month.
* Geek. If you are the personeveryone comes to for tech help,or if someone in your family is,
LogMeIn Ignition for iPad allows youto remain on the couch when thephone rings.
The app, which costs $29.99, letsyou view and control all of your computers from the iPad. Use it tofix a friend’s PC or Mac miles away, access files on the computer youforgot in the office, or turn your newiPad into a lightweight laptop.
* Games. Most of the best gamesfor iPad and iPhone cost money. If you’re willing to invest, there aregreat ones, including classics likeTetris ($7.99), Scrabble ($9.99)and the top-grossing Angry Birds($4.99).

5 TIPS FOR IBS RELIEF
(NewsUSA) - As many as 50million Americans suffer from thecramping, bloating, constipationand diarrhea that go along with
Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Accordingto the International Foundationfor Functional GastrointestinalDisorders, the digestive disorder mainly targets women: Between60 and 65 percent of sufferers arefemale.
Despite the overwhelming number of Americans affected, there is nocure for IBS. But while no magicpill exists, the best way to treat IBSsymptoms is through tried-and-truemethods of healthy eating, exercise, and stress management. Hereare five simple ways to ease your
suffering:
Keep a food diary. Many peoplefind that their signs and symptomsworsen when they eat certain foods. For instance, chocolate, milk andalcohol might cause constipationor diarrhea. Keeping a food diaryfor a few weeks may be a goodway to find out if a food bothersyou. Record what you eat and whatyour symptoms are. If you notice apattern or think a food makes youfeel worse, don’t eat it.
Fiber up. Increasing fiber into your
diet may help improve how your intestines work. The key is to do itslowly: Some people feel bloatedand have gas if they increase their fiber intake too quickly. The bestway to increase your fiber intake is
to eat a wide variety of high-fiber foods like beans, oatmeal, popcornand whole-wheat bread.
Manage your stress. Many IBSsufferers feel that stress seems totrigger IBS episodes. Identify certainevents or situations that bring onsymptoms, and develop ways of dealing with these situations. Anactivity like yoga or hypnosis canprovide a break from stressfulsituations, and psychiatrists andpsychologists can provide additionalmethods for coping with stress.
Get moving. A recent reportin the American Journal of Gastroenterology found thatIBS sufferers who did moderateactivity three to five times per weekfor 20 to 30 minutes a sessionexperienced greater symptom relief.
Add a supplement. For mostpatients, the best therapy for IBSis the most simple. A recent studyin the British Medical Journalfound that peppermint oil was themost effective therapy for IBS,providing relief for 40 percent of patients. The dietary supplement
Complete Relief has harnessedthe power of peppermint, creatingsoftgels that effectively relievediscomfort. Complete Relief standsout from other peppermint productsbecause of its “controlled-release”
coating that ensures the full doseis not released until the softgel hasentered your digestive tract. This iswhere gas and bloating occur andwhere Complete Relief begins towork.

VEHICLE FEATURES THAT MAKE
MOM’S LIFE EASIER
(NewsUSA) - Parents have plentyto worry about when packing their kids in the car and heading out on
the road. Luckily, car manufacturershave been designing vehicles withparents in mind to make these tripsa little easier.
“Manufacturers are really embracingfamily-friendly features, and not
just in minivans,” says Jennifer Newman, editor at Cars.com.“Besides things like DVD playersand other entertainment options, parents need to consider step-inheight, latch connectors and other features that most people might nothave even known existed.
