Age Analysis of Chinese Students Studying Broad

Over the past decade, the number of Chinese students studying abroad has risen year by year and the trend of younger age is obvious. Among theyounger students studying abroad, especially the younger students studying in senior middle schools and below, the growth rate is significant.Compared with the weak proportion of young students ten years ago, the total proportion of students in primary, secondary and high schools hasincreased to 23.2% of all students studying abroad.

Major Distribution of Chinese Overseas Students

34.12% students prefer business major, which is still the first choice for Chinese students, but its popularity has declined significantly compared with years before. Growth of Both In-and-Out Student Numbers

In 2017, the number of Chinese studentsstudying abroad exceeded the 600,000 markfor the first time, reaching 608,400, anincrease of 11.74% over the same period ofthe previous year. In the same year, thenumber of returnees increased by 11.19%compared with the previous year, reaching489,900, of which 227,400 receivedpostgraduate degrees and postdoctoraldegrees, an increase of 14.90%. At present,the phenomenon of the double growth ofChinese students' studying abroad andreturning home is consistent with thenational strategy and the industry demand,and we will see that the development trendkeeps improving.

“Belt & Road" Countries Have Become New Growth Points

“Belt & Road”: An economic and TradeCooperation Initiative drawn from the ancient SilkRoad of China and linking with neighboringcountries. The area refers to the Silk RoadEconomic Belt and the maritime Silk Road intwenty-first Century. Along the way, from China toEurope, it links Central Asia, South Asia and NorthAfrica. It is mainly emerging economies withrelatively fast economic development. China hopesto strengthen cooperation with these countries.

The "belt and road" country is becoming a newgrowth point. This year, the number of studentsstudying along the "belt and road" state is 66,100,an increase of 15.7% over the previous year, whichis faster than that of the whole overseas studynumber. Among them, 3679 students were sent byChina governmental fund, involving 37 "belt androad“ countries along the line.

Younger-Age Study Trend

From the stage of study plan, the trend ofyounger students studying abroad continues.The growth of Postgraduates amonginternational students has stalled, while thatof undergraduates continues to growsteadily, with the fastest growth rate insenior high schools and below. On the onehand, the emergence of the phenomenon ofthe younger age of studying abroad benefitsfrom the improvement of parents‘ visionand economic ability; on the other hand, dueto the rise of the relevant educationindustries (such as international schools,overseas education service providers,training organizations etc.) and the increaseof the transparency of foreign educationalresources, it has also supported the youngerage to study abroad.

Policy Changes of Different Countries

For the choice of destination countries, Chinesestudents' families are largely influenced by thepolicy of studying abroad countries. Among them,visa, scholarship, immigration, languageexamination and other policy adjustments are themain factors. For example, the simplifiedapplication of T4 student visas by the BritishMinistry of the Interior, the introduction of"special education courses for foreigners" bysome Korean universities, and the tuition-freepolicy of Spanish public universities all havefacilitated the application stage, the developmentduring and after graduation of foreign studentsand stimulate the choice of Chinese students to acertain extent. At the same time, some countrieshave adopted tightening policies to strengthenthe auditing of overseas immigrants.
